Ugh some of these comments. Not all dogs are the same. And no this isn't for convenience of the owner. My golden is 9 days into her first heat. I let her just be in her crate and blood got all down her legs and her tail. She would sometimes squat in kitchen and blood would come out because of urge and not making it outside. So diapers help with cleanliness and sanity. She drips on the floor at times. I don't think some of you have dealt with it to this degree. So please save your comments. Not everyone has the same situation.

BEST HEAT VIDEO I HAVE SEEN !!! i have been watching countless videos in preparation of our pup going into heat...this is by far the most helpful down to the diapers and pads you recommended (and the demos) i can't thank you enough for taking the time to do this.

I have to let my dog go through her heat cycle one to two times according to the vet so that her joints won't be bad as she ages. Until I can get her fixed, I have been cleaning up blood everywhere! I love these ideas. Thank you.

Don't get your dog fixed it's really unhealthy for them. Vets will tell you that it decreases the risk of 3 types cancer and while that's true what they don't tell you is that it increases the risk of 10 other types of cancers as well as brain tumors and accelerated brain aging particularly in female dogs.

Me too. I don't want to breed my dog and i don't want her whole life could threatened by pyometra as well. Closed Pyometra has high mortality rate because even if your dog survived at 24-48 hours critical phase, after the emergency surgery, the infection is still on going and could lead to septic bacteria infection - not to mention E. Coli as the main bacteria is not a joke whether its for human, dog, cat or other animals.

@Aluzky That is not necessarily true! The oldest females {Bitches} I have known have ALL been spayed.
the oldest, a Labrador, died at 19.
She was spayed after her first season.
Others, 15, 16. No illnesses whatsoever.
They too were spayed after their first season.
Spaying before a first season isn't advisable, but spaying definitely frees a bitch up from phantom pregnancies and Pyometra.

I have my girl currently going through her first heat, she is 8 months. I also have an intact male and they are getting along pretty well. They need constant supervision of course. As for right now he is only sniffing her and licking her but once she goes into the estrus phase I would keep them completely separated.
She hates the diaper, she licks herself all the time to keep clean so I haven’t notice any blood in the carpet or floors, she also doesn’t want to play much especially outside.

Thank you very much for this information. My female GSD is 8 1/2 months old, and i want to be as prepared as i can. This is my first female dog. Just to make it more challenging, we are living in our travel trailer in an rv park and we have another female dog, ( she is a mix and spayed already) We are going to have our German Shepherd spayed after a full cycle. I will take your advice and purchase the diapers right away to get her used to them. Plus, she is not a big fan of her crate and does not sleep in it at night.(She will nap in it from time to time though.) It is the airport carrier type, and she chews on it at the bottom by the door when we are away . We don't leave her for more than a few hours at a time a few times a week but i have been considering looking into the type of crate you showed in your video.i am wondering if she will be more comfortable and not try to chew inside. Anyway, Thank you again for putting out this video for all of us newbies. :)

My miss fancy pants went into heat for the first time this morning! She is just over 8 months old! So glad I got her “fancy pants” early 🤣. Actually, they just came from Amazon a week or so ago so I could have plenty of time to help her adjust. Well, that day never came! After putting the diaper on wrong, I did figure a few things out on my own. 🎉 the recommendation for her to be diaper less while in the crate is a great idea! Glad I kept those old towels. I got diapers and have been trying to find one that would fit a docked tail for my doberman. Well...before I found a diaper that fit I saw her vulva was suddenly very swollen. Crap! Still a very helpful video. I think I'll use the suitical I have and use a pad inside. What about house with good sturdy fence? We made sure our fence was very reliable because of having dobes. Got my 3 year old male neutered just in time. So far no leaking at all and no smell. My first female dobe had her first heat like this too. She had no drainage for first heat and we got her spayed before 2nd heat. This pup (only just turned 7 months) will never be spayed.

I have a French bulldog girl starting her 1st heat, and most Frenchies are unable to self clean, they can't reach their hind end. I feel bad she has to miss out on doing what a dog is supposed to do! I guess we will just have to help her do what she can't do herself? :-\

Great tips. My German Shepherd is in heat and only allowed the male to mate once. She is still bleeding and constantly backing up her rear to me with her tail curled as if she’s ready to mate again. Any suggestions?

This is usually 2-4weeks after the onset of her estrus cycle. The bleeding is the uterine lining shedding in preparation for the heat cycle and fertility. Humans do it once a month dogs about twice a year.

Took my girl in to get spayed and they said she was in heat already. 1 week later I havent seen any blood or any evidence other than a bit more panting and her being a bit more affectionate than usual. The vet had said they saw a bit of discharge and saw some other evidence during an exam. I haven't seen ANY discharge so really don't know what to think.

If she's in heat she's never off leash in public areas and I don't take her out in public much at all. We exercise only in our fenced back yard or go on walks in our neighborhood. There are no loose dogs in our neighborhood but I'm always very vigilant anytime I am out with her in case there is.

I taught my dog to sit between my feet before her first cycle so that there is no access if we meet a male dog (I change my route during cycle so as not to meet otter dogs but it ocasionally happens). Apart from the two three days she is fertile and I have to keep her a wat, she sits as asked.

Thanks for the very informative video! Any tips for leaving the dog home alone? I work 5 days a week and usually leave my dog alone in the yard, I don’t want to leave her in the yard during her heat cycle as I’ve heard males can jump the fence, but I am concerned about her needing to go potty if I leave her in the house? Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Males will definitely hop fences and females become escape artists too. I always crate my dogs when they are left alone. If they are over 8 months old, they can definitely hold it for at least 8 hours
