Yeah he is. Had dinner with him in Sonoma once about 6 years ago. He has a winery out there so met up through that industry when I was a winemaker. And holy shit while I’m typing this the part of the video of hiring his winemaker because he was a bass player kinda kills me. I was too intimidated to even mention I played bass (like for a job for six years). Anyway good dude. But my wine is better than his lol
Les is truly a wonder. He’s able to be so different and weird but he’s able to make it work so well. We all need a little more Les Claypool in our lives.
I once saw someone compare Les Claypool to a praying mantis cursed with eternal knowledge. I don’t know what they meant, or what they were on when they wrote that, but I want to agree
He seems to perfectly capture that feeling of eeriness, like looking at liminal spaces. He put that into both music and video production to make you question life. That's art.
I have seen hundreds of bands live, from PinkFloyd to Metallica and everything in between. Without a doubt Primus was the best all around performance I’d ever seen in a small venue. All three guys are so talented at what they did. Amazing. PinkFloyd was amazing but it was a stadium concert and I wasn’t close enough to be involved in the antics, I was just watching from hundreds of feet away in the nose-bleeds.
People underestimate how hard it is to play dissonant nonsense. It's like trying to pee your pants. It requires a surprising amount of effort. Larry Lalonde deserves a ton of credit for working well with Les.
Primus and RUSH are the tightest bands I’ve seen live. They sound better live than they do on their records. I must also give Sevendust a shout out. EXTREMELY tight band, especially for how their sound is so damned percussive. Staying in unison like that is way harder than most ppl think
My cousin was at a Primus concert one time, and he told me Les said something during the set along the lines of "Women who smoke cigarettes have pu**ies that taste like beef jerky." If anyone knows of footage where Les says this, please let me know.
I’m not sure if you’ve heard of their stuff together, but definitely check out The Claypool Lennon Delirium! They have some cool stuff they’ve made together. Kinda like a Primus feel with some Beatles-esque vocals.
“Well Les was too good…That was total bullshit, he was being nice, he thought I was a weirdo.” The most relatable thing I’ve ever heard a famous Rockstar say.
Love this video! I had the Blind Illusion album in high school and started following Primus shortly after that. Musically gifted and a great dude in general.
I met Les behind the Newport in Columbus Ohio. Very nice guy and he happily signed everything. Except a bootleg t shirt the guy pretended not to know was bootleg. Lol.
Still one of the best live performances of Wynona ever captured and they fucked up the audio feed, I still can't believe it. What we're hearing is actually Ler's monitor mix, that's what he's hearing in his fold-back monitors. It got routed to the broadcast in place of the master stereo, that's why we're hearing mostly guitar.
I was just talking to some guy in Chicago who use to tour with primus when they just had one record with four songs on it and would give it out for free out their van.
🤯 I haven't ever seen this until JUST NOW yet I asked about their favorite shoes at last year's Vegas show!! And in answer to the question at the end.... Yes make a 2nd
Whatever that tv show is at 9:30, I’ve seen the full clip before and it’s a travesty. What little bass you can hear is an amazing performance, but I guess they didn’t sound check and/or the engineer hadn’t heard of Primus. It’s too quiet even for a normal band, really
My reaction to Les has always been the same as my parents' reaction to the jazz greats: I have no idea what the fuck he's doing, but he is clearly the best at it.
I know Les played on Tom Waits big early 90s comeback album, Bone Machine, and later on other albums, but I don’t know if that was before or after the Tommy The Cat video… I know it was all in the early 90s, 91/92 though..
From interviews I've read, in the middle of creating the seas of cheese album, he told his record company managers, 'i need someone with a raspy, old, cool voice for this song" and they looked at eachother and said 'bring him in' Para-quoting of course lol
Les is Weird Al's younger brother that did a lot of mushrooms and learned bass instead of accordion.
How do you know he doesn't play an accordion, Hmm? LOL I digs srooms too.
Still does just like we do
Al and Les are my favorites, along with Tom waits.

except maybe jerma
