    The opening riff to "Panic Attack" is cool but the riff John Myung plays during the solo at 4mins 45 is killer to play at full speed

      @@aspOLmeR Don't know if makes any diference because I'm not an expert, but 6 string vs 4 string in this case can make some difference

      @@adolfodias83 it doesn't tho I play on a 4 string and no major difference. the only thing is that you have to play most of the song one octave higher but that's it. also myung doesn't use the high string of that 6 string often

    Ryan Martinie from mudvayne is incredible. An amazing bassist. I have never seen a bassist get such a work out or use so much of the frett board.

      Agreed. Death blooms is a good complex line. Dig isn’t hard, the speed is the worst part. But death blooms is one that requires work out of me. Of course there are others, Ryan is one of my favorite bassists in general. The dude is crazy versatile

      Ryan Martinie was a huge influence on me playing the bass. L.D.5.0. is a masterpiece but it doesn't even stop there. Also, as a bass player, love to Matt McDonough!

    I still think "Heart of the Sunrise" is a pretty intense bass line, but then you have the chill bass solo after that's so good. "Roundabout" has a good bassline as well, but I feel like Squire's best stuff can be found on "The Fish," or "Tempus Fugit." Of course, he did some incredible work over his career, so there's certainly plenty to pick from.

    Don't forget, Geddy and Les are also singing overtop of their riffs. Definitely adds to the difficulty

      No, it doesn't add to the difficulty of the bass line. It just means they are skilled to be able to play and sing simultaneously. BUT, that doesn't just make the bass part harder.

      It makes a hard bass line even harder, though. Mad props to my singing bassists out there. Got to give it up to dudes like Chris Squier who could sing complicated harmonies and play foot pedal organ parts while playing tough bass lines.

      I've come to believe that WatchMojo is staffed with 18 year olds. They don't shit from shinola about music. They're all under the misconception that Rap and EDM are actualyl music.

      WatchMojo has its place in the ecosystem. Creatures will exist to feed on low effort benign view harvesting and inertia of the YT algorithm. At least the narrators have a tinge of ‘I really don’t care what I am saying’ to keep it real.

    Jaco’s playing on Joni Mitchell’s “Cotton Avenue” has always been my favorite “hardest riff”. Especially the line as Jaco opens the song after the “Overture”. Go to the one minute and forty five seconds mark.

      Agreed! But: do not go to the mark. Carefully listen from the beginning to gain the full wow- effect. And don't forget to turn your amp to 11.
      This album has such a brillant sound. At least the original vinyl.😊

    For me, two of the most difficult basslines to play are "Hit me with your rhythm stick"- Ian Dury & The Blockheads, and "Don Quixote"- Nik Kershaw, though I think the latter was keyboard sampled, it'd be awesome to see someone play it on bass. "Warheads"-Extreme is pretty tough to play, too.

    The bassline to Hysteria isn't too hard to play... once or twice. But to keep it going the whole time... whoof. There are many Muse basslines that really test your endurance, like New Born. Chris Wolstenholme has incredible stamina.

    You know what? The bad sound and "unplugged" noise from the room makes your playing sound much more "real" rather than the clean line compressed signal you usually have. Great video. Very much agree with your opinion.

    Last month I was lucky enough to stand 10 feet away from Chris Wolstenholm playing "Hysteria." He made it look effortless, but I can confirm that it is very difficult!

    Happy to see JPJ getting some love for Immigrant Song! I've always loved the bass line there. Achilles Last Stand is another iconic bass riff from JPJ.

    As a non-bassist, two that come to the top of my head that seem like simple riffs but I imagine would be hell to play are "A Fan's Mail" by Thundercat and "Tuesday Lover" by Broadcast. They are also both great bass riffs. RIFFS.

    When I first picked up the bass guitar to start learning I had four Gods. Steve Harris, John Entwistle, Geddy Lee and my number one Chris Squire from yes. Roundabout is the most amazing song and the endurance to make it all the way through from beginning to end is amazing and so are his riffs Rhythm changes just the whole song. I still get worn out after playing the first three and a half minutes LOL.
    I mostly use my fingers on bass but I also use a pic once in awhile and slap. Here's one of my songs as an example. Nowhere near the talent on here though.

    Many incredible basslines exist out there. Steve Di Giorgio's fretless bass in the record Individual Thought Patterns of the band Death is just insane. I particularly consider all the bass parts of the song Overactive Imagination to be difficult to follow in full speed.

      I'm currently going down the death rabbit hole and my fucking god that entire album.... Death is ALSO so fucking good for insane drummers, I mean ffs they've got 2 albums with gene hoglan?????? Although of the 2 i vastly prefer symbolic

      @@daveprice5911 What i like the most in Death is that you could see them evolving from one album to the next, outlining the genius of Chuck Schuldiner. As for the drummer thing, you can also check (if you haven't) Sean Reinert's drumming in Human album. He was only 19 at the time and was playing way ahead of his time. I'm between ITP and Symbolic. The first is more technical and the second is more easy to be heard IMO.

      @@user-un3wr9ri4l Yeah Human was next on my list, it's a friend of mines personal favourite death album and in her opinion it shits on the rest of their discog, which of course made me curious, then seeing hoglan himself saying how much inspiration he took from Sean's playing only amplified that.
      Before then I have been listening to Strapping young lad's city and my god that's some ear candy

    I’m thinking about two “bass grooves” (and riffs) that I like a lot:
    1. Jamiroquai: Paul Turner is a great bass dude, but the main riff in Runaway it’s completely CRAZY. It’d be nice to hear your “version” of this bass masterpiece
    2. Mohini Dey: I don’t know if it’s properly a song, but the first thing she played at SIT BOOTH at NAMM in 2019, to me, still remains a crazy and top bass moments, ever. The “theme” is such a perfect fusion of groove, musical taste and “variations”.
    In this case, too….it’be nice to have “your version” of this masterpiece.

    I'm surprised that Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face made it in this list. Is an epic bassline.
    As death metal goes, Death also have some epic basslines and Pull the Plug being has some good basslines.

    Alex Webster is an amazing metal bass player. One of my favorites. Check him out in a side project called “Blotted Science”. Even if your not a metal or a death metal fan you can’t deny the creativity and the finger speed of Alex Webster. Blotted science is an instrumental band.

    Clay Gober’s riff in the song “Real” by Unprocessed” is pretty amazing. His pick/slap/hybrid technique is so damn good (and not easy). His riffs in GOAT and ABC could also be up there.

    I’m not a bassist, but “Cupid’s Dead” by Extreme is pretty interesting bit of bass. The section where the bass doubles Nuno’s guitar is EPIC!!!

    There's a couple of _epic_ bass riffs on the recent Porcupine Tree album 'Closure / Continuation'. 'Harridan' for starters. And that's in 5/4. And the melodic bassline that appears twice in 'Chimera's Wreck'.

    Dude there is this bass riff in Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden which is so god damn cool. It's like a few bars before when the interlude hits. Man I would love to hear you do a whole video on Steve Harris. He really is super awesome if you really look into his style!

    Re: #9: Sounds a bit similar to the bass riff in "Another One Bites the Dust." I have to say it's the dollar store version of that one. One I always thought was a bit difficult but due to its obscurity nobody really mentions was the Kajagoogoo song "Frayo."

    There have been some amazing difficult bass riffs coming from recent bands. Not sure if you're into metal but if you are check out Archspire, the bassist in that band is absolutely unreal

      As a fellow Rush fan, your list is full of variety and I think it's great. I'd add Headlong Flight as #10, personally.
      Also, have you ever thought that the Driven Bassline sounds quite similar to the Panic Attack Bassline?

    It gets lost in their pop song hits, but Mark White of the Spin Doctors is a fav to listen to. I really like Shinbone Alley (the groove is awesome) and Sweet Widow (the bass solo in it.) Mark and the drummer Aaron Comess really groove.

    "Hyperactive" by Thomas Dolby - the recorded version is a programmed bass sample, but it WAS actually performed live by Thomas Dolby's touring bass player, Terry Jackson, on the "Aliens Ate My Buick" tour!

    I have always liked the riff from "Hero" by Kiyoshi. I´m not a bassist, so I don´t know difficult it is, but it sounds way hardest than several of the riffs on that WM list.

    Some of the hardest bass lines I've ever tried to figure out came from Tool- especially their most recent stuff. The Pot was particularly difficult for me. That said- I haven't even tried anything off Fear Inno. yet so- I assume it's even more difficult because Justin seems to have been finding his footing and I would say on 10,000 Days he really started to shine but you could tell he was evolving quickly- becoming even better.

    Don't know if it's the hardest, but "The Real Me" by John Entwistle on Quadrophenia was pretty epic. One of my favorites was Geezer Butler's intro to Black Sabbath's NIB. Just pentatonic scale, but cool

    Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse has a lot of insane bass lines, he is basically the quintessential extreme metal bass player, one of his riffs I like a lot is the intro riff from the song Mutation Of The Cadaver, check it out.

    Sam Wilkes needs to be more well known. Maybe some know who Louis Cole is, but his group Knower with Sam on bass in the Live Band Sesh version of "Overtime" deserves intense analysis from any bassist.

    One of the best bassists I know, or at least cuz nostalgia from my teenager days, is L'Arc~en~Ciel's Tetsu. Japanese J-Pop basist with a lot of dope riffs, solos and licks.
    Try: Blurry Eyes, New World, Driver's High, Daybreak's Bell, Honey and Spirit Dreams Inside as recommendations.

    How would you rate the difficulty of Too Shy by Kajagoogoo? That to me was a whatever catchy 80's song iv heard and not paid much attention to before, but once somebody told me that there is a killer bass riff in that I listen to it in a whole different way. Now its on my play list and if you pump the bass up its a killer banger!

      Nick Beggs is a monster. I loved his playing on that album, but lost track of him until I saw him playing bass for John Paul Jones (Zep) in 1995 opening for King Crimson.
      Recently he's been in Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree)'s band. Seems like a real sweetheart, too.

    My own person top 4 ( i call them the 4 basslines of my apocalypse) are: 1. Jerry Was Racecar Driver 2. Hysteria 3. Roundabout 4. Immigrant Song. Honorable mention for Young Lust - Pink Floyd because I tried learning it and half way through found out there is an incredibly difficult piece of it making it almost impossible for me to learn currently.
