i might have only made this video so i could hang out in a comments section full of people talking about Rhythm Heaven. please talk about Rhythm Heaven with me. i'm begging you
Nick i love rhythm heaven and i have nothing else to say except that im glad my pure unbridled passion for tapping a single button rhythmically for hours is shared by a man i dont know in california.
(Spoilers for Lockstep on Rhythm Heaven DS) I remember playing rhythm heaven on the DS and I had a very beautiful experience playing the minigame, Lockstep. I had been dying in school. My parents had been pushing down on me and there was some intense drama in my friend group that i was involved in. At night, I was kept up till 4 because of my anxiety. One of those restless nights I said, “screw it let’s play some rhythm heaven.” I popped open my DS and played the most recently unlocked minigame, Lockstep. I was playing through the minigame hitting those offbeats and onbeats real hard. As I continued to tap out the boys, I started to forget about the problems. I started to have a good time. It was mesmerizing and I was locked in step with these boys. It was incredible. I had not been able to escape my anxiety and problems for the longest time and here i could just enjoy myself. Then, it happened. The camera began to zoom out, showing more Lockstep boys. It was beautiful to see so many people come together on my screen to step out a groovy rhythm. It brought tears to my eyes to see my character amongst his fellow friends and family stepping along in peace and in such a happy, ethereal state. Then it completely zoomed out to reveal that they’re all in formation to create a picture of a dude. I have no idea who that dude is or what his deal is but it didn’t matter and it still doesn’t matter. Just the fact that the lockstep boys and the developers at nintendo have created this experience where i can feel happy with a gang and create art... it made me cry. I hadn’t cried since I was a little kid. I was taught not to cry by my parents but I just had to here. The lockstep boys had just struck such an emotional tone with me and I couldn’t hold in my feelings any longer. I just cried and cried and cried. In the end, i got an “Okay” rating. But that was okay. I was able to see my lockstep boys again and have a great time with them. That day, I learned the important of letting your emotions out and the importance of togetherness. Thank You Nintendo and Thank you Rhythm Heaven. I sincerely hope more of these games get developed so more people can have these experiences.
Nick Robinson Thanks so much for reading b!! Hope you live a good ole fruitul life and keep pumping out quality content so people can tell stories and have great convos!
This entire video could be edited to say “Mother 3” instead of “Rhythm Heaven” and it would still work perfectly. Mother 3 was the first fan-translation physical game I ever bought, and I think this is going to be the second! Thanks Nick!
I completely agree. The Mother 3 translation is a gem, and I genuinely wonder if I would like an official release as much, with how much love and care from fans went into it.
rhythm heaven saved my life tbh. i was extremely depressed and suicidal from school, the pandemic, and a recent breakup. i was planning on ending my life. i decided i wanted to play rhythm heaven fever at least once so i used dolphin (sorry i’m too broke to buy a wii and the game) and i had alot of fun. after completing fever i played ds, then megamix. i might play tengoku but idk. anyways rhythm heaven has made me really happy and i wanna live so i can hopefully see a new game release on switch. thank you tsunku, you’re a godsend.

I never knew that a good Rhythm Tengoku translation was even out there, I just bumbled my way through in Japanese originally. My thoughts on this sort of thing is that people will go through what they need to go through to have things that aren't supported/supplied to people readily. Part of this coming from how pro archival i'm becoming as more and more things disappear off of the internet, especially videogames, from companies just not going out of their way to preserve them. So much XBLA that's just lost to time. With fan translations, to me if the publishers aren't ready to put one out i'm not opposed to fans getting involved. As long as people still go out of their way to do stuff like you mentioned and import the games when they get the chance. It's a tough balancing act of being anti-piracy but also pro archival and making sure people get a chance to play these games that would otherwise fly right past them because of english release.
yeah, agreed! one of my favorite details in Rhythm Heaven Silver is the part (it's at 8:35 in the video) where they included a list of ways players could support the series in America. they clearly care about supporting the series as much as anyone!
Dude, you honestly brought me back to the first time I played Rhythm Heaven for the DS and falling in love with the series. I love this series so much.
Nick i didnt think you could make me love you more, but this is it. one of my favorite game series as well. spread the love that this series desperately needs.
I feel like the general rule with repro carts, fan translations, and importing is that the older the game is the more valid the decision. Basically, even buying a legit cartridge of a gba game now won't get the original company a dime, so if a version of a very rare or outright unavailable game exists for far cheaper and you just wanna play the game it was meant to be played then there shouldn't be an issue morally. Especially if you support the game/series when it does become available officially.
Yeah I emulated silver, gold, and fever, and it was a stroke of luck I got a physical copy of megamix. I couldn't get fever without spending my life savings, i didn't have a GBA, I have a DS but it has black bits on the screen and in general I wanted the emulator version. I should really emulate nsmb ds considering it's the only game I really have played on my ds recently.
Okay, now you pretty much _have to_ play Pokémon My Ass. It’s what I can only describe as a once-in-a-lifetime experience of the highest quality. It is majestic.
Dude. I haven't thought of Rhythm Heaven since Megamix got a US port three years ago. Thanks for reminding me how little attention this series gets from the big N.
I love Rhythm Heaven and I can't agree more that real hardware is the best way to play the games. I played Silver on my phone and it was a horrible pain. I'd recommend 3DS VC if you have a modded 3DS. That way you'll also be able to play 3/4 of the games on the same console which feels really good
Afaic, as long as the people who made the patch are okay with it, I think it's fine that people are selling these fan translations as long as the price is fair.
god i love rhythm heaven so much, it was actually you that put me on rhythm heaven (specifically megamix) at about 3 am on my 13th birthday, after watching your video involving rhmm, when i convinced mom to buy it for me ! i played it literally every single night for hours until i lost my 3ds ! thanks nick for introducing me to my new fave game franchise (other than sonic and nights) !!!
Honestly, this is by now my favourite video game series ever. I was never that much interested in Rhythm games before, I thought they all were the same, just pressing buttons that come flying at you (you know, a la Guitar Hero or DDR) but this series completely changed my mind on the genre. I found out about the games pretty much by coincidence, like most people here. I was just watching random meme TH-cam videos one afternoon and the recommended bar suggested me a video of Rhythm Heaven Repainted, I watched it, and luckily enough a regular gameplay was among the Repainted video's recommended. I was blown away, I was like "Is this really a rhythm game?" So I felt tempted to try em, through emulation. (Luckily I didn't stump with any glitches or Input lag!) and totally felt in love with the games. They're simple, easy to pick up, but really hard to dominate! I really hope we get a new game soon. I'd actually have a reason to buy a Switch too!
I actually managed to import a complete Japanese copy of this game with the game, box, manual, club Nintendo codes, and stickers for about $20 a few years back. It's the favorite piece in my collection.
I remember seeing a copy of the original Rhythm Tengoku at a Superpotato when I went to Japan. Was really tempted to buy it just for the Cool Factor but went with Pokémon Green instead. Fan translators like this are truly doing God’s work.
Fellow Rhythm Tengoku fan here!. The glee club is my nemesis XD I’m glad you are showing a different side to flash carts. They’re not only for piracy, they allow you to play fan translated games as homebrew games.
The best way I think the series can go on the switch at this point is as "Rhythm Heaven Maker", featuring a single player collection of all the games, as well as making your own levels with songs. I just want to see more rhythm heaven please.
Bought Zelda BS for my SNES. It feels a bit like piracy, but at the same time I wouldn't have experienced this game any other way. In a way, people who sell these fan translations are helping to propogate a piece of videogame history that might be lost to time otherwise. I wish that the people who originally put in the work to translate it and patch it together could get their fair share, but Im more glad stuff like this exists than I am upset about that.
Rhythm Heaven is by far one of my favourite Nintendo Franchise. As far as I can remember, Rhythm Heaven Megamix for the 3DS was the first and only game I've ever bought on launch day.
This was probably the video that made me interested in the series (along with RTGame’s video). Now a few months after first watching it, I have Rhythm Heaven Megamix AND Rhythm Heaven Fever. And they’re both AMAZING. Edit: A few days ago I got the DS game.
I feel very similarly on the topic of Smash Bros mods. Back before Smash4, when Brawl was the last game in the series, I was in a weird situation where I considered Smash Bros to be my favorite series of all video games, but I didn't actually like any of the individual games all that much, as they all had massive, game-breaking issues. Brawl in particular had lots of cool new features, but was also incredibly unbalanced and busted. Then, people made amazing mods for it, and for a time, my favorite entries in the series were those mods, which didn't "officially exist" at all. Of course, Nintendo was super against such mods, which made me feel very conflicted, since I loved them so much.
Bro, I lOVE Rhythm Heaven!! My old roommates introduced me to it on the Wii. We're all musicians, and somehow all had quite a hard time with it (especially the rap level). In fact, the rhythms in the rap level got me so hung up, that I obsessed over them for a solid day before I internalized it. I was gifted the DS version shortly after, but then I lost my DS and case. I have since bought a new DS, but never had another Rhythm Heaven game. God, I miss it. Thank you for this wonderful content!
I think Rhythm Heaven is my favorite Nintendo/video game series ever. The day that this video was uploaded I ordered a copy of Rhythm Tengoku on Ebay. I also was looking at the same seller's translation cart. I only saw this video today and it startled me.
Im so glad to have a channel with high quality videos relating to rhythm games, bemani, and all kinds of things. I have to ask, outside of the two obvious ones, (being rhythm heaven and DDR), what would be your favorite rhythm game?
YESSSSS thank you for making this video i want an rh switch so baaaaad tsunku actually asked how much people would want it last month on twitter so i hope we get a new one!
oh also for people who want to play RH Silver without input lag i recommend modding your 3ds and using gba virtual console rom injection. very nice way to play it without buying an actual custom cart.
I just recently bought rhythm heaven silver as well as the mother 1/2 and 3 cartridges from ebay. these are both some of my all time favorite game series and I've been having a blast playing through mother 1 so far :) I can't wait for rhythm heaven silver to arrive in the mail. I didn't even know it was a thing until I watched your video!
Nintendo is already rich and abuses its power punishing the little guy for making FREE fan games. I could not care less if they get mad about people buying from people.
I spent a good long while the other day just listening to the Rhythm Heaven soundtrack and appreciating how much I love these games. They’re all so weird and off the wall, but there’s something so wholesome and touching about them too. It really feels like the developers want you to enjoy the game as much as they do and you can tell that they enjoy what they’ve created. That’s not something that can be said about the games industry as often as one might hope.
totally! for some reason, all the Rhythm Heaven games feel extremely personal. i feel like i smile way more while playing Rhythm heaven than with any other series. (nice user icon btw!)
I totally agree, it’s difficult for me not to get goosebumps listening to some of the songs in the game, even if some of the lyrics are pretty cheesy, but that just adds to its charm, I think. (And thanks so much!! Always repping some Rhythm Heaven love)
Front Mission Gun Hazzard is one of the best mech-suit games ever made, but it's only on japanese. The fan translation that it has mades it possible for people outside of japan to play the game.
It has a translation?! Wow, I remember emulating it almost a decade ago in japanese, sure brings back memories, I should patch it one day and play it again, I remember loving it! And as a side note, is always heartwarming watching someone react so wholesome at experiencing good and succesful fan-translation projects. I served as a translator (1 of 10-15) in a fan-translation project for a few years for that exact reason, giving something to the fans, as other groups had given to me before.
didn't know this exists, my only experience with rhythm tengoku was trying to get into the minigames by trial and error (but still having tons of fun with them). thanks a lot nick, will check this out
I once lost a case containing several of my old DS games. Platinum and a bunch of other great ds games were in there. But what bummed me out the most was losing my copy of rythym heaven. That was the only game I considered rebuying
"I modded my Wii in secret" I would actually do that as well but my dad back in the day allowed us to mod my family's Wii just for Club Penguin... And he never knew the possibilities of modding
Finally someone says something about Rhythm Heaven Also something really minor but “Rhythm Tengoku Gold is the DS game Minna No Rhythm Tengoku is Rhythm Heaven Fever”
Rhythm Heaven is one of those games I never get tired of. I especially loved those "endless games" on the ds version - the glass tapping one and the samurai one.
Rhythm Paradise as it's known in the UK here, makes me cry. I spent 5 hours awake when I was young playing it on my ds, spending all that time trying to beat Remix 6. It made me happy, I actually got my sense of rhythm just from this game and now LOVE any music with a nice, deliberate beat. I cry hearing Rockers and Remix 10 on that, I remember FINALLY beating Remix 6 and seeing the drag thing go in all 4 directions. The Wii one never got me too excited other than the endless modes and Shrimp Shuffle. Played through the GBA one, love it. The 3DS one got me in a lot of ways. The final remix of that feels like a very FINAL note to the series where I keep HOPING EVERY NINTENDO DIRECT to see Rhythm Heaven on Switch. I still cry. I still live in the beat. Thanks.
This is a perfect example of why the modding community in video games is so great. Modding consoles isn't about piracy. That aspect of it is a major draw for some people, especially chinese cart makers who only care about profiting off of the work that the initial modders did, but people who do the initial work do it because they care about making hardware you own truly yours, allowing for customization, homebrew, etc. I own many physical Japanese titles across my various consoles and handhelds, and the rare occasions where a title gets a working english translation fan mod (eg Maplestory: Girl of Destiny for 3ds), I make use of it through that. On top of that I'm able to do neat things, like stream my computer games to my Nintendo Switch and play with the joycons, or used my original xbox classic as a media server. The possibilities are endless, because these are essentially computers. Rather than buying a home media server, I could repurpose hardware I already have, and still use them to play games I own copies of, and that's the primary reason why the modding communities for video game consoles exist. Piracy comes after, and is usually an after-thought advertised by people profiting off of selling an easy solution (r4 cart, sxos, etc).
In case you find it morally murky, think of it like this: You are paying for - a physical "empty" repro GBA cartridge - someone putting the rom to this - the ability to play the patched rom on the original hardware Which patched rom it is, doesn't even matter. Imagine you are buying a flash card and the work of someone customizing it for you.
Its so rare to find people on youtube that actively love this game series enough to make a fairly long video about it. Ive seen the tengoku arcade in your videos and im so jealous dude! I have a plush from when tengoku first launched.
These kinds of translation projects floor me with how much effort some of them put in, however that seller is sketchy as hell. I would look into whether or not they even get permission from the original romhackers to resell their stuff.
i can almost guarantee they don't have permission from the creators of the mods. and i agree, it's definitely sketchy, but when it's BY FAR the easiest and best way to play a hack that's already in murky legal territory... i don't know! it's a murky situation
Man, I have so many good memories of Rhythm Heaven. I remember when I was about ten years old, I came across a demo in GameStop and immediately fell in love. It was at the top of my Christmas list that year, and I played the shit out of it. When I actually started playing it, I really struggled to get into “the flow”. I kept failing or barely passing the games. But then something clicked for me in Lockstep-my first superb, and my first perfect medal. I don’t know what exactly it was, but that game was a turning point for me in Rhythm Heaven, and I still go back to it regularly.
Rhythm heaven fever is without a doubt my favorite 3DS game. Got the DS game years ago on a road trip to keep me me quiet in the car, and I've loved the series ever since. Tengoku is the only Japanese GBA game I've gone out of my way to import a complete in box copy of.
It works perfectly on a modded 3DS with thr GBA Virtual Console injector, since it really doesn't use emulation, the game is running on 3DS hardware, with no input lag or glitches whatsoever!!!!
Wow someone I watch on twitch played rhythm heaven fever and all the goddamn songs have been stuck in my head since I walk around my house singing the shrimp shuffle song then you upload this video lmao. One day I'm gonna get my 3DS fixed and buy megamix

I was blown away, I was like "Is this really a rhythm game?"
So I felt tempted to try em, through emulation. (Luckily I didn't stump with any glitches or Input lag!) and totally felt in love with the games. They're simple, easy to pick up, but really hard to dominate!
I really hope we get a new game soon. I'd actually have a reason to buy a Switch too!
I've actually perfected all the Rhythm Heaven games in less than a year, really one of my favourite franchises.
I actually managed to import a complete Japanese copy of this game with the game, box, manual, club Nintendo codes, and stickers for about $20 a few years back. It's the favorite piece in my collection.
stickers??? ahhh i’m jealous
I really hope Rhythm Heaven gets all the attention it deserves in the possible Switch game
I remember seeing a copy of the original Rhythm Tengoku at a Superpotato when I went to Japan. Was really tempted to buy it just for the Cool Factor but went with Pokémon Green instead. Fan translators like this are truly doing God’s work.
I respected this channel after seeing a few videos but now I see this guy is a rhythm heaven fan? A true man of culture
Fellow Rhythm Tengoku fan here!. The glee club is my nemesis XD
I’m glad you are showing a different side to flash carts.
5:15 "Looking good."
Instant like bro!! I love the rhythm heaven franchise!!!
It’s great to see a TH-camr with more than 3,000 subs talking about this series without being a custom remix
Waiting for that playthrough of Pokemon My Ass
Bro, I lOVE Rhythm Heaven!! My old roommates introduced me to it on the Wii. We're all musicians, and somehow all had quite a hard time with it (especially the rap level). In fact, the rhythms in the rap level got me so hung up, that I obsessed over them for a solid day before I internalized it.
I was gifted the DS version shortly after, but then I lost my DS and case. I have since bought a new DS, but never had another Rhythm Heaven game. God, I miss it. Thank you for this wonderful content!
do you have a 3DS? if so, you should check out Rhythm Heaven Megamix - it's almost all of the Rhythm Heaven minigames packed into one game!
@@babylonian I do have a 3DS...... Guess I know where the next 6 months of my life are going!!
Best music video games series.
You can't change my mind.
“Remember, this was way before Rhythm Heaven Mega Mix”
Ah yes, of course, I do indeed know about that game and when it came out
I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys this series so much. I always make it a routine to play and beat all the Rhythm Heaven games every year!
I have to ask, outside of the two obvious ones, (being rhythm heaven and DDR), what would be your favorite rhythm game?
probably Sound Voltex! the knob mechanic is so fun, and the fact that it's 4 lanes means my DDR / Stepmania instincts carry over for sightreading :3
For some reason I loved the MLP video of Rhythm heaven and never knew it's based of this game. I want to play it now.
I didn't even know it was a thing until I watched your video!
oh my god that emulator glitch compilation is a classic
The fan translation that it has mades it possible for people outside of japan to play the game.
fun fact: the word silver on the fabricated case is actually the silver logo for a tv channel by the same name
what the, okay
so thankful to be alive at the same time as rhythm heaven so thankful that someone else feels as strongly about this game
I only know of this game through the questionable variant...
Those who know KNOW
It was advertised in Pokemon My Ass?
Oh boy i know, was it minus8 that did that?
@@batatinhacomlepra6899 yep
It has a translation?! Wow, I remember emulating it almost a decade ago in japanese, sure brings back memories, I should patch it one day and play it again, I remember loving it!
And as a side note, is always heartwarming watching someone react so wholesome at experiencing good and succesful fan-translation projects.
I served as a translator (1 of 10-15) in a fan-translation project for a few years for that exact reason, giving something to the fans, as other groups had given to me before.
“And pose, And pose, let’s sit down, pu-pu-pu-PUNCH!”
didn't know this exists, my only experience with rhythm tengoku was trying to get into the minigames by trial and error (but still having tons of fun with them). thanks a lot nick, will check this out
I once lost a case containing several of my old DS games. Platinum and a bunch of other great ds games were in there. But what bummed me out the most was losing my copy of rythym heaven. That was the only game I considered rebuying
"I modded my Wii in secret"
I would actually do that as well but my dad back in the day allowed us to mod my family's Wii just for Club Penguin... And he never knew the possibilities of modding
hey now, this is my song.
for you, yeah that’s right.
Drink a beer and watchin so much nick youtube videos on computer. The ideal
Finally someone says something about Rhythm Heaven
Also something really minor but “Rhythm Tengoku Gold is the DS game
Minna No Rhythm Tengoku is Rhythm Heaven Fever”
Thanks.
:’)
Been playing Rhythm Heaven Silver on my Everdrive and it's such a great game, a labor of love and I'm so thankful the patch was created.
In case you find it morally murky, think of it like this:
You are paying for
- a physical "empty" repro GBA cartridge
- someone putting the rom to this
- the ability to play the patched rom on the original hardware
Which patched rom it is, doesn't even matter. Imagine you are buying a flash card and the work of someone customizing it for you.
Where can I pick this up? I really enjoyed Megamix, and I would love to try out these exclusive minigames.
aliexpress
Mod your 3ds then download the rom and patch then use GBA vc injection
Its so rare to find people on youtube that actively love this game series enough to make a fairly long video about it. Ive seen the tengoku arcade in your videos and im so jealous dude! I have a plush from when tengoku first launched.
YOU OWN A WHAT????????
Actually, Rhythm Tengoku Gold is the Japanese name of the DS game; the Wii game's Japanese name is Minna no Rhythm Tengoku.
crap, you're right! i did this video all in one go with no script, so i was bound to screw something up :P
I really like this sorta off the top of your head way you talk about things, y'know like a real conversation. Thanks Nick.
I don’t know what exactly it was, but that game was a turning point for me in Rhythm Heaven, and I still go back to it regularly.
this has been one of my favorite games for years. i thought i was the only one who had it tbh! i’m so glad you love it as much as i do!
Rhythm heaven fever is without a doubt my favorite 3DS game. Got the DS game years ago on a road trip to keep me me quiet in the car, and I've loved the series ever since. Tengoku is the only Japanese GBA game I've gone out of my way to import a complete in box copy of.
i didn't even know this game existed
Poonda this is a fan translation of the rhythm heaven for GBA released in Japan only, I've been paying attention to this project since 2014.
Once I played this game, I was addicted like I was never addicted to Pokemon Emerald.
It works perfectly on a modded 3DS with thr GBA Virtual Console injector, since it really doesn't use emulation, the game is running on 3DS hardware, with no input lag or glitches whatsoever!!!!
Bon odori is a great track! Glad you're giving this game exposure
Bon Odori slaps
I love your content man
Rhythm heaven is epico
Wow someone I watch on twitch played rhythm heaven fever and all the goddamn songs have been stuck in my head since I walk around my house singing the shrimp shuffle song then you upload this video lmao.
One day I'm gonna get my 3DS fixed and buy megamix
I have 3 favourite DS games.
1. Chibi Robo - Park Patrol
2. Rhythm Heaven
3. Warioware D.I.Y
you have amazing taste - based on this comment, i now feel like i should play Park Patrol hahah
What about SM64 DS?
You don't know "Pokémon: My A**"? Bless your pure heart.
rhythm heaven is very fun
I found out about rhythm heaven when I was downloading DS games and I just downloaded Rhythm Heaven.
I played it and I found it very fun
Man, I feel like we had the same experience but I wasnt at good time in life and missed a physical version of RHF. now its $150! I'll get it one day.
I'm so lucky to have bought it before all the normies came in. We should have gatekept harder.
