Are you using actual horsepower and torque numbers or the manufacturer "claimed" Horsepower torque? Because several manufacturers see numbers that just aren't there.
I always quote the manufacturers claimed figures where I can. I have looked at dyno numbers but I also see them vary from Dyno to Dyno. If there was one dyno shop that had tested every bike I need to cover then that is definitely the source I would use, but that shop doesn't exist. I know It's not ideal but for what I'm doing here it's perfectly fine. After all I'm not launching people into space. 😉
@@BikesILike Harley Davidson is notorious for claiming huge dyno numbers and every dyno I've seen on their models falls super short of "factory" claims . Thats all I'm saying.
@@johnlorenzo1413 But don't forget you should expect to see a discrepancy between manufacturers HP claims and rear wheel dyno measurements because all manufacturers measure HP at the crank of the engine not the rear wheel.
@@BikesILike go to cycle world dyno runs and you will see the numbers for harley Davidson are way off what they are quoting, The Japanese bikes are very close to their claims. You cannot compair crank numbers against rear wheel horsepower. Cycle world dyno runs will give You a good base line to check claims against as they use the same dyno.😉
@@johnlorenzo1413 nonsense, cycle world measures power at the rear wheel. Harley Davidson and most certainly other manufacturers measure power at the crankshaft.

This is amazing well done it's pretty rare that someone buys a stock bike these days could u possibly do the test with stage two performances upgrades from Harley/indian/ would be interesting to see any difference
Thank you for the funny video. I'm interested in sportsterS, Next time I would also like to see a comparison between Ducati's Diavel and XDiavel. Including cost performance.
If I was doing this comparison I would use mainly 4 metrics. Weight of the bike. I would keep the weight range between 450lbs to 550lbs. The displacement of the bike. Nothing smaller than 1000cc and nothing bigger than 1300cc. The category of the bike. So no sport bikes, or naked bikes, just a cruiser classification. Lastly, maybe include the type of drive the bike has. Chain vs Belt vs Shaft drive. I am guessing all of these HP/torque numbers are at the crank and not at the wheel, and from what I understand you loose more HP/torque from the various drives. Still a great review and I think Harley has a winner with this one.
Yes, manufacturers measure the HP of an engine on a bench. Meaning the specification engine is not in the bike when horsepower is measured. When you measure horsepower on a Dyno and from the rear wheel, losses occur from the gearbox, driveshafts, belts, chains and even rear wheel inertia. Which is why rear wheel Dyno HP is always lower. 👍
I think an equally important metric, though, is the price. Let's face it, for most regular real world guys, it's always a factor. The fastest bike does you no good if you can't afford it.
You may be right. I'm continuously refining my process and working towards greater accuracy. If I do discover that I'm way off the mark I will make another video. 👍
The Fat Bob will get pretty much the same result as the Street Bob, although being a little heavier it will be down a touch. I'm looking at the Diavel for the next one. 👍
@@akhiljohnforever Find a video of the Pan America and listen to the engine sound. It will sound the same as a Pan America. The VRod engine may have been a starting point for the new Revolution Max engine but Harley state the Rev Max is all new and shares no components with the VRod engine. The Pan America will give you a very good indication of the Sportster's engine sound potential.
I had a Sportster for about ten years. Every time I went into a dealership, I had the feeling I was second rate because I "only had a Sportster". If the dealer and salesmen don't start treating Sportster buyers with a little respect, no one is going to shell out 15K. The attitude is it's a girls bike and you will be back in here in less than a year to trade up to a "real bike" ie a bagger.
I guess I'm just used to it. Salesman told me that I would love the power of a lowrider compared to my sportster. The parts guy heard him and laughed. Salesman asked the parts guy what's so funny. He says that since they sold their vrod destroyer that my sportster was the quickest motorcycle on the lot.
That new Harley Davidson has potential 🤠 really looking forward to seeing one... still i have to agree with the majority the bike is to expensive 😕 but most every thing is...
I did consider the Xdiavel for the original Under 15K comparison but the price disqualified it on that occasion. I'd like to see how it compares too, I'll see if I can work it into the next one. At the rate the bike requests are coming in I might have to do a fourth video!
I mean unless you do Drag Racing for a living, what’s the point of these types of Comparisons? It’s a complete stupidity to be out and about riding at those speeds anyway… Geez
Your drag strip hypothetical is way off. The Scout is without a doubt quicker than the Chief and the StreetBob. The acceleration figures to verify this is easy to obtain, only the Sportser S is beating the Scout Bobber. For example, the Scout bobber has a recorded quarter mile time of 12.2 and the StreetBob has a recorded time of 13.0.
Thanks for your feedback I do value it. I'm always trying to improve my predictions and accuracy. Can you direct me to a good source of motorcycle drag times? Don't include a link, TH-cam will bin the comment. If you could point me in the direction of your source info I'd be much appreciated. 👍
The exhaust design of the Sportster s is the only biggest mistake/con , the heat generated from the exhaust wont make the ride pleasant for the rider , he's thighs/balls will be well done cooked 😅
@@BikesILike The heat shields look massive and should do a good job I believe the exhaust is a tribute to the xr750 but with the necessary large shields and mufflers it just doesn't look good.
The scrambler pipes are not well executed but the cartoon front tire takes the cake. Yeah I know, Harley has done it on quite a few bikes over the years. But it serves no good purpose as far as handling. You either like it or not.
Torque to weight ratio is a completely irrelevant data point and shouldn’t be factored into the “virtual drag-race” prediction. If you really want a metric using torque then maybe torque at the wheel in 1st gear vs weight (which would essentially show peak acceleration comparison). If you do it that way the Rebel is actually higher than the Chief and Streetbob. Example… Rebel 1100 - 1st gear overall reduction= 12.917 - weight w/ rider = 687lbs - 12.917*72ft-lbs= 930ft-lbs - 930ft-lbs/687lbs= 1.354 Streetbob 114 - 1st gear overall reduction= 9.311 - weight w/ rider= 859lbs - 9.311*119ft-lbs=1108ft-lbs - 1108ft-lbs/859lbs=1.29 1.35>1.29 This still really isn’t very relevant to a 1/4mi drag race as power and weight are the primary factors (especially when comparing bikes of similar geometry and aerodynamics). The Scout is verifiably faster than the Chief and Street Bob by a decent margin and be second (or maybe third behind the Rebel) on your comparison race.
Thanks for your feedback I do appreciate, consider and value what my viewers have to say. I'm always learning and trying to improve my methods and when it comes to the Scout I'm thinking you might be right. (I may have to revisit this one). Since this video I feel I've taken a step forward in accuracy and have developed new methods as you can see in my latest video. My VMax will smoke em all! Since the VMax is discontinued, I would buy a Diavel S and be done. I paid $16,500 OTD with a 5 year warranty, so the the price would directly compete with Harley and is actually cheaper. Harley owners have been begging for years for a performance motorcycle and Harley keeps disappointing. You can only get so much power out of a V-Twin and Harley would rather keep its iconic engine than new riders. This is why so many other companies have emerged. Harley and performance is an oxymoron.
I love it. Its amusing to me how much s h i t the new Sportster is getting from Boomers. But imho, its awesome! LOLOLOL This is 2021, not 1985, 1995, or 2010...

in fact prediction which bike win when we have small diffrenc in power to weight ratio like in this comaprision is lil more colmpicated because other factor like drag aero and pwoerlosesss from drive train matter to also how wideeeee is peak power on graph ! so its not very easy only be have such stats with such small diffrenc in power to weight ratio also you can do some misteake with number which also lead tpo other results :x diffrenc beewten 293 and 275 bhp/tonne can be anihilate be other drag aero and other wide of peak power and smaller power lossess in drive train ! but assuming everything else is the same and diffrenc is only inpower to weight ratio and bikes arent huge diffrenc in weight than yea race end like im write and never be such thing that bike with higher crank torque be first at first meteres because like im wirte lower torque bike comoensate this be higher rpm !!!!
This shows a fundamental lack of understanding of power delivery. There's a lot of variables that go into winning a drag race, not just horsepower. Torque does matter, or more specifically, the torque curve, as horsepower is nothing but a figure derived from torque and RPM. In general, a bike that is delivering more torque at an equal RPM is going to be accelerating more quickly. You're acting as if bikes with low peak torque figures and high winding motors can just immediately snap into their desired rev range and that isn't true. Gearing also matters quite a bit, as does tire size. If you're talking a race with a rolling start where you can be right on the cusp of the desired rev range, then sure, peak horsepower is going to be the determining factor most likely, but that isn't the case here. There's a reason a lot of people prefer riding bikes with high peak torque numbers at lower RPM ranges with flatter curves. Sure, they don't make for monsters up top in the rev range, but how often are you really winding your bike out to its peak? 99% of the time you're accelerating normally from a dig or a roll, and in that case, it's nice having that power immediately on tap.
Thank you. This is what I've learned from a lifetime of owning and riding bikes of all shapes and sizes. From my 170 HP BMW K1300S to my ZX-7R to my 1700cc V-Twin to my Boxer 1200 to my CBR1000F's to name a few, not to mention the many other bikes I've ridden CBR1000's, Daytona 675 and the list goes on. I've ridden high horsepower bikes and high torque bikes and I know where one has the advantage over the other. But the biggest lesson I've learned of the value of torque is owning and driving electric vehicles. I've owned three. 👍
Again, an inaccurate technical comparison. The Street Bob and the Polaris Chief Dark Horse are Big Twins. With this, it can be seen that style is useless for comparison. Heck, none of these are bobbers either. A bike can't be a bobber straight from the factory. It is supposed that a bobber or a chopper are customizations, it is supposed to cut or get rid off non essential components or parts, aiming at speed gain.
Finally a sportster worthy of its name. Should be an exciting ride!
Finally? The first 12 years of sportster production it was generally considered to be one of the quickest and most powerful motorcycles on the planet.
I don't see the handling of this bike being very sporty.
Sportsters are supposed to be affordable if someone has the money to drop 12k on a bike they’ll buy a softail

@@BikesILike go to cycle world dyno runs and you will see the numbers for harley Davidson are way off what they are quoting,
The Japanese bikes are very close to their claims.
You cannot compair crank numbers against rear wheel horsepower.
Cycle world dyno runs will give You a good base line to check claims against as they use the same dyno.😉
@@johnlorenzo1413 nonsense, cycle world measures power at the rear wheel. Harley Davidson and most certainly other manufacturers measure power at the crankshaft.

but,how about costs?

the race at the end was fun!
This is amazing well done it's pretty rare that someone buys a stock bike these days could u possibly do the test with stage two performances upgrades from Harley/indian/ would be interesting to see any difference

between Ducati's Diavel and XDiavel. Including cost performance.
You should do a "Power to Price Tag" comparison too....
Nice idea!
Excellent work! You delivered! lolThank you
Thank you too! 👍
Do the same with middleweight nakeds... 890R, MT-09..
Ok I'll add them to the list! 👍
0-100 acceleration numbers should show a fairly acurate race prediction
Great comparison!
Thank you! 👍
Suggestion to Part3: Forty Eight and Softail Slim
Man so many bikes. I think I'm going to have to do a part 4! 😁 I'll add them to the list, thanks for your recommendations! 👍
I did not expect that tq to weight ration on the Sportster S. HOLY SHIT
I think the second fastest bike is the Scout.
You may be right. I'm continuously refining my process and working towards greater accuracy. If I do discover that I'm way off the mark I will make another video. 👍
Wonderful
Please do with fatbob 114 and diavel
The Fat Bob will get pretty much the same result as the Street Bob, although being a little heavier it will be down a touch. I'm looking at the Diavel for the next one. 👍
Bikes I Like I am worried about the sound
Can they have vrod sound ?
Vrod do have liquid cooled engine
Isn’t it
@@akhiljohnforever Find a video of the Pan America and listen to the engine sound. It will sound the same as a Pan America. The VRod engine may have been a starting point for the new Revolution Max engine but Harley state the Rev Max is all new and shares no components with the VRod engine. The Pan America will give you a very good indication of the Sportster's engine sound potential.
Bikes I Like I am confused with fatbob and this bike
I like fatbob and planning to get it soon then this happened
What’s your thoughts on it
good one ,, i dont think your far out if at all;;;
I had a Sportster for about ten years.
I think that attitude's going to change with this new Sportster. 👍
"Mogorety"?? Did you mean to say "majority"? How did your Autocorrect miss THAT?

Would be interesting to see the Sportster against the Xdiavel.
I did consider the Xdiavel for the original Under 15K comparison but the price disqualified it on that occasion. I'd like to see how it compares too, I'll see if I can work it into the next one. At the rate the bike requests are coming in I might have to do a fourth video!

its a relatively inexpensive bike... but it doesn't shine in a drag race. Get in the twisties and this race would turn out a lot different.
Very nice
Cool
As usual, hd overpricing their bike!!
My sportster has hundreds of runs on the strip. Best run in the quarter is 11.63 @ 116 mph. Nothing hypothetical about it.
The exhaust design of the Sportster s is the only biggest mistake/con , the heat generated from the exhaust wont make the ride pleasant for the rider , he's thighs/balls will be well done cooked 😅
Yeah I'm worried about that too. I'm hoping Harley have done a lot of work to ensure the rider does not suffer from leg heat.
@@BikesILike The heat shields look massive and should do a good job I believe the exhaust is a tribute to the xr750 but with the necessary large shields and mufflers it just doesn't look good.
@@davidleonard8369 Ok cheers! I see the reference. They're typical Scrambler in their layout which I too have never been a fan of. 👍
According to reviewers who actually RODE the bike, that's not the case.
Example…
Rebel 1100
- 1st gear overall reduction= 12.917
- weight w/ rider = 687lbs
- 12.917*72ft-lbs= 930ft-lbs
- 930ft-lbs/687lbs= 1.354
Streetbob 114
- 1st gear overall reduction= 9.311
- weight w/ rider= 859lbs
- 9.311*119ft-lbs=1108ft-lbs
- 1108ft-lbs/859lbs=1.29
1.35>1.29
This still really isn’t very relevant to a 1/4mi drag race as power and weight are the primary factors (especially when comparing bikes of similar geometry and aerodynamics).
Part 3 of this series th-cam.com/video/W-FNRQuckxo/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for sharing, your input is helping to make this a better channel. 👍
I’d be very surprised if any but the the Sportster S can nose in front of my Scout in the 1/4 mile. Happy to try it
My VMax will smoke em all!
I did compare the VMax in this video. th-cam.com/video/ViEURSwjFYQ/w-d-xo.html 👍
I love it. Its amusing to me how much s h i t the new Sportster is getting from Boomers. But imho, its awesome! LOLOLOL This is 2021, not 1985, 1995, or 2010...
Piss on the boomers (and I'm ALMOST one myself), H-D makes tons of models for them. About time Milwaukee made something for the NON-wrinkled, NON-fur-faced, NON-tattoo'd, NON-black-clothes-only crowd. They'll all be dead in the next in the next 15 years!

heheh pall you do nice job but with thsi dragstrip good at least you say that you dont have physique formula for predict this preciselly with h-d sportster you are right it absolutely destroy other bike in this comaprision on quarter mille because it have 380 bhp/tonne second at finish line be scout bobber with scale at 293 bhp/tonne third rebel1100 with 275bhp/tonne four be street bob with 257 bhp/tonne and last cross finish line indianchieff with 241 bhp/tonne the only equation which matter is power to weight ratio from physique stand point of iew me friend ;) TORQUE AT CRANK IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVEANT FOR DRAG RACE !!!!!!!!!! why because bikes with lower torque compensate this be higher rpm !!!!!!! more torque and lower horsepower mean this bike be most likely work at diffrent working rpm range and nothing more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gretings and do more such nice video except take into consideration what im write really i know how this stuff go i can predict with 99,9% accuracy which bike win on quarter mille assuming on each bike be true pro quarter mille driver and not some nob ! :) .
in fact prediction which bike win when we have small diffrenc in power to weight ratio like in this comaprision is lil more colmpicated because other factor like drag aero and pwoerlosesss from drive train matter to also how wideeeee is peak power on graph ! so its not very easy only be have such stats with such small diffrenc in power to weight ratio also you can do some misteake with number which also lead tpo other results :x diffrenc beewten 293 and 275 bhp/tonne can be anihilate be other drag aero and other wide of peak power and smaller power lossess in drive train ! but assuming everything else is the same and diffrenc is only inpower to weight ratio and bikes arent huge diffrenc in weight than yea race end like im write and never be such thing that bike with higher crank torque be first at first meteres because like im wirte lower torque bike comoensate this be higher rpm !!!!
in results at first metres all bike can go only very similar what can do diffrenc is only weight distribution ! gretings ;) .
@@BikesILike electric vehicles are pretty wild. Immediate and constant acceleration and no shifting...it's something else, for sure.
The Sportster S is just so ugly. I wish they would have thought thru the design better
I find it very appealing. Part cruiser, part cafe racer, part "standard".
