Harley Davidson’s brand new iteration of their long loved sporty motorcycle, the Sportster S. Up against the very attractive and popular offering from Indian, the Scout Bobber. If you’re in the market for a sporty cruiser you will no doubt be drawn to these beautiful bikes, and while they are similar in a lot of ways, once we dig a bit deeper we can see just how different these two are.

Today we are putting both bikes under the magnifying glass to have a detailed specs comparison and see just what the differences are between these two muscle cruisers. We’ll be analysing the styling, claimed Engine & power specs, exhaust notes, Weight, Suspension & brakes, Fuel economy, features & price to see where they stack up. And while it may seem that one has got the edge, you’ll see at the end that this a tougher choice than you may expect. It's sad to see how Harley will no longer will have entry level affordable motorcycles... I'd definitely go for the scout.

@@guamazolopez6456about 20k+ after dealerships. And compared to every other motorcycle manufacturer. 16k is far from entry/ adorable. Most other manufacturers have great starter bikes under 6k MSRP and even some like honda with the navi at 2k MSRP.

I'll definitely choose the Indian. Its just beautiful and I can't take my eyes off it.
The Indian scout line is one of the most beautiful lineups I have ever seen. And I love the analog tach that is now an option on the 2022 model. I don't need a lot of tech for my cruiser. It just needs to be a nice ride that I am proud to be seen on. I hate the looks of the HD headlamps.
@Buddy Sunday rider? Like a Sunday driver? I likely will take it easy for the first 6 months at least. First bike and all. But this is going to be my main vehicle. My brother wrecked my car on Christmas. So I don't have another anyways.

I have to agree that front lamp is horrible, the only thing I like about the Harley is the power, so will Indian make one as powerful ??
I think I couldn’t disagree more. I think that front lamp is beautiful. It’s one of the reasons I have a fat bob. I’m loving that Harley is bringing more technology to their bikes. Evolution and progress will never be a bad thing. But they are also still keeping their classic options, so now they can have people with different preferences happy 😊
@Marcos Junior and that is based on your opinion and how you like the looks. As for me, I don't like the harley look.
Also, as for the power that indian is putting out, Fortnine released a video talking specifically how they do it. He also released a video talking about the most authentically pleasing motorcycle (turns out it is in the Indian lineup) and he goes through the reasons why.

The technology you talk about, which I agree with you about, is more about future proofing it for other markets where some of the safety tech is set to become a requirement. I believe we even got new requirements for all new bikes sold from November 2021 (or perhaps imported and complied) where ABS must be dual channel on all bikes.
Love them both for different reasons but I chose the Sportster S price does not matter to me when I'm wasting my money on toys. The mid controls are a must in my opinion however and that did add another $700 US plus labor...ouch. I truly have no prejudices when looking at bikes I can see the beauty in all of them in their own unique ways. I've owned many of each manufacturer over my 62-year life span and could not name a favorite. This new Sportster S does appeal to me for some reason even though a lot of people my age prefer the air cooled v-twin stuff. Thanks for the great review.
Iv rode harleys my complet life have 2 now and am buying the indian bobber over the sportster s. I am 70 years old but don't ride like an old man

I concur on the simplicity of the Scout; i own the 2016 standard Scout 69ci; not one problem at 28k miles. Given the performance and tech installed on the Sportster, I wonder if the Indian FTR would have been a closer comparison. Sportster S looks pretty sweet too; love the high level of torque at a lower weight bike (between these two.)
Yes, the FTR S would be the comparison to the Sportster S. And I think the FTR S actually beats out the Sportster S in performance.
If Indian would put a fuel gauge. Update suspension and seat and come stock with an LED headlight, as well as better brakes it would crush the sportster S.
They did. 2022 scouts can get LED headlights and adjustable rear shocks. But the FTR 1200 S or Carbon are a more appropriate comparison and do crush the Sportster S.
I’m a “sporty” guy but the Fat Bob was always kinda daunting in size for my smaller stature. The sportster s gives everything I always wanted in a more approachable package. All day long I’m taking the sportster

Maybe try a Fatboy. They sit a bit lower than the Fat Bob.

Bought the sportser S beautiful bike packed full of features, gifted to the girlfriend as a reliable safe bike but with that sportser performance.. she owned a sports bike before the harley, 07 honda cbr600rr,. She is loving the torque and Rain mode is mint... and the seating position is better aswell.
I LOVE the full swept fenders of the regular scout and hate the weird headlight cover fairing thing of the bobber

I think both bikes look incredibly beautiful. I love the dark and badass look of the bobber just as much as the modern look of the sportster. If I could I would have both. I do enjoy the fact that Harley is putting ,ore technology on their bikes, it’s good to have options. They got bikes with a more classic look and experience and also modern ones now, so everyone can be happy
I ride a 2021 Scout Bobber... I initially was going to go Harley. Even took my MSF course at HArley and learned to ride on a Harley. What pushed me to Indian? Price, styling and "customer culture". Indian is very no frills and no fanfare to buy from which is more my key along with the lack of rabid nature of Harley culture where I am from... it was a no brainer for me personally.

I like the overall look of both bikes. I agree the stock exhaust would have to go on both bikes for me. I have always admired the all Black Bobber with two into one performance exhaust. I also applaud HD for the Sportster S. I have a stripped down solo seat 2007 Sportster 1200 w/ stainless 2 into 1 exhaust, flat tracker handlebars. For now it fullfills my need for short jaunts on our twisty country roads. It also cost me 2700 three years ago. That being said I would probably buy an All black Indian Bobber based as much as its looks as is nechanical assets. I also own a 2022 Pan America. Love it

Good video, solid information. I would like to say that HD needs to be making changes like this because younger riders like me are terribly underwhelmed by almost all of HDs product. Personally, I love Indian, and I am not defending HD but they did a good thing here.
I was looking at both and chose the Sportster S. Main reason is that I have a Harley touring bike, so I wanted to stay with the dealership I was familiar with. When looking between Harley models, the choice was between Sportster S or the Fatbob. The Fatbob, like the scout, is more traditional with less tech. However, I'm a techie by trade, so the right choice was the Sportster S. I will say the 3.1 gal tank does suck. Feels like I'm always filling up the tank. On a side note, some of your comments align with people's traditional thoughts about Harley. Why are they trying to change? It's simply cause they have to. The EVO Sportsters attracted younger consumers, but they were failing in today's world of shiny sports bikes. Harley needed to change the entry point within their lineup. The Nightster, Sportster S, and Pan America are amazing bikes targeted to the younger generation. Of course, with that being said, I'm 49 and love riding my Sportster S.
i think these cruisers are perfect the way they are right now in terms of aesthetics. people love harley and indian for the comfort and the history and culture behind them. why try to change it now? engine upgrades and new technology is always welcome but changing how they look and taking away that classic raw cruiser style just to make it look like some kind of cyberpunk bike isn't the answer.
They are definitely not targeting the younger generations with how much even their cheapest bike out the door will cost.
I think a better comparison for the new sportster S would be the Indian FTR, same price point. With the price of the sportster that high it is no longer an entry level bike. A better comparison for the scout is the 883 or 48 sportsters.

Good review bro, I enjoy riding both bikes but I enjoy the style and the handling of the Indian scout bobber. I feel that in this review the Indian scout is at a disadvantage from the start. I think the sportster s vs the FTR would be a better comparison. Blessings 🙏

I own a 23 s and came from a Aprillia sport bike. I love the bike. It’s pretty fast and light for a cruiser. I may not be able to catch a gsxr but no issues blowing by cars in traffic. Personally love how it looks and only gripe is the heat on the exhaust. Love the tech and it’s the closest thing to a sport bike a cruiser can be.

Awesome comparison. In our garage as 1 of our 4 motorcycles is a 2021 Indian Scout Bobber and I was actually looking at a 2023 Harley Sportster S to add to our collection. I am actually pretty impressed with Harley on the engine numbers, Color TFT Display and tech on this motorcycle and I have never been a harley fan.
Just fyi, the new 2025 Indian Scout with the tech package has almost the same TFT display options as the 2023 Harley Sportster S.

Both are great bikes. HD is priced too high for this to be a comparison.

As much as I'm not on team Harley and think the looks/style of the Scout is slightly better....I'll take the performance of the Sportster and even the technology. The styling of the Sportster can be adjusted in the aftermarket especially the exhaust. Every bike I buy...the heavy restrictive OEM exhaust is one the first things to be done. I would change the seat on both bikes. I like a passenger seat on my bikes. Not only does it serve as a place to put things like an extra helmet....but often...I enjoy the, "I've never ridden on a motorcycle.." from a PYT...The heavier weight of the Scout is something I don't like as well.

I have a 2019 Indian Scout Bobber, even though I like the Sportster S, I would still buy the Bobber (I may have a bias). I like the fact that the bike is more analogue, I really don't see the need in any tech on the bike. As for gas mileage if I drive more spirited (Usually my way of driving) I'll get around 100 mile per fill up, if I drive more normal, I can get around 130 miles.
I have a scout and love it, having said that it's pretty hard riding on a trip and I'd love a few of the driving aids of the Harley.
Hmm, this could take me a while. I hope you like reading. I chose the Sportster S (not hypothetical, it should be on a boat in the Pacific). I was looking for a year. The Scout was absolutely on my radar to begin with. The problem was the justification for the price when you compare it to the overall Australian market. The Honda Rebel 1100 got released early 2021 and if you compare the Scout to it it is a no brainer. For $19,000 you can get the Rebel with almost everything the Sportster S comes with except the TFT display/connectivity and the lean angle gimbal. The Rebel is a much better value bike than the Scout standard that starts at $21,000 and only has ABS. By July 12th I had decided that I was going with the Honda. Then two days before I put my money down, HD makes the release announcement for the Sportster S. On the Friday I was in the Harley dealership putting my deposit on a bike I have never even seen in person. So why? I had the Scout and Rebel in front of me to compare. Why would I choose the Sportster S. Keep reading below.
So if you really look closely at the Scout you are simply getting an American made/style cruiser that is well overpriced for the comparable market to that bike. It has a nice engine but all bikes have a nice engine except the air cooled Harley's that run a 30 year old engine in a brand new frame (I truely did not have HD on my radar). I didn't buy the Sportster S over the Scout. I bought it over the Rebel. I was never going to be 100% satisfied with the Rebel even though it is a better bike than the Scout. The thing is, I wanted an American cruiser and the Japanese made one in that style well, but it wasn't "really" an American cruiser. But for an outlay of $19,000 in silly money, is it really what you want? Consider a car. You can still buy a Japanese car with European stying for half the price and not regret it because it is a practical choice. The second you decide to put 20K on a motorbike you are not making a practical choice. You are making a personal choice that is hell impractical when the first storm front crosses the coast. So the choice is now only between the Rebel and the Sportster S.
So the differences. I was not 100% happy with the Rebel seat and after 6 months being released I could only find one aftermarket option. I own a Triumph America and although the seat felt comfortable in the showroom, 200km on the road changed my mind. So I need a bike that I will be able to customise to adjust my riding position. A sport bike is uncomfortable by nature so such a minor thing as an extra centimetre in seat position is nothing but on a bike built for comfort and style it is everything. The Rebel is ECU limited to 160kph. I live in Perth and the trucks on our highways pull triples (about 45 meters). I really don't want to find myself trying to clear that and having my ECU decide that the oncoming head-on with a car is less of a threat than my speed. Sure I might only do that once in my lifetime but I really don't want my Honda ECU to make that "once in a lifetime" a certainty. You get a feel for your bike but that ECU cutout just kicks in to limit the torque and HP, not ideal. My Triumph won't even get to 160 and I know that so I base my decisions upon what I know about my bike, I don't need to be surprised by my machine making that decision for me. I told you it would be long, there is more.
If you were to up spec the Rebel to close that gap with the Sportster S where would the price on it be? So I have already established it is much better value than the Scout, how does it compare in price to the Sportster S? Well if you were to up-spec the engine to meet the power of the Sportster S you are adding about 180 CC, even a Japanese company will throw on an extra $2000 for that. Change out the LCD display for a mapping TFT display and add another $1,000 and then add another $1500 to add the lean angle gimbal. So the Rebel now comes in at $23,500 if you were to up-spec it to meet the Sportster S on apples for apples comparison. So it doesn't put the Sportster S that far off the mark and I have customisability.
One last thing. You should go and test ride the Indian FTR Carbon. More your style I think and a better comparison to the Sportster S. Exactly the same onboard tech and pretty much the same price. Like I say, silly money if you looked at it but if it suits you and you were going to spent 20k on something else that you didn't love as much, it would not be an easy choice.
I bought the first Harley coming to U.K., the suspension is fine if you open it all the way up, and seats and etc will come soon, currently at the dealership being fitted with mid mounts! Will have it tomorrow 29th of October 2021
@@hamidking78 Lucky bastard. I ordered mine two days after the announcement and I am watching US videos of people test riding it and saying theirs will be there in a week. I don't think there is one in Australia yet. I work export logistics and it is about 55 days in transit before it lands a container. The ships have to stop in Singapore, Hong Kong and Jakarta before hitting Sydney harbour. You just get a straight Atlantic run. They tell me mid November but I know logistics enough to know it will likely be 1st week of December. On the other hand mine should be here as we enter summer and you can admire yours in the garage for 5 month before riding season while I am going in for my 10,000km service before you get a great run at it. Ahh, the petty satisfactions that are bred from disappointment.

First off great video! I love these comparisons between US brands. However I feel like the Sportster S main competition form Indian is the FTR. The Scout is an entry level bike designed to be the jack of all trades (appealing to both amateur and expert riders). The FTR was designed as a flat track sport bike and actually has some better specs than the Sportster S (which as far as I know is Harley’s main sport racing model). Once again I’m not criticizing just debating. Love the video and hope to see more like it!

Seeing that I am a 100% weekend rider, I would lean to the Sportster S. Saves me time doing math with trip reset and constantly checking fuel levels. A more 1-to-1 comparison would be the chief dark horse vs the sportster S imo.
Comparing a large torquey air-cooled v-twin against a smaller liquid cooled high revving sport engine with variable valve timing is pretty horrible. Especially since the Sportster S is 500lb range, and the chief is more than 100lbs heavier. Both the Scout and Sportster S are sport cruisers, where the Chief is a traditional cruiser and is better compared with the Harley Softail lineup
The Sportster has far more available upgrades. You can build one without using any actual HD parts. So many more upgrades available and the bikes are everywhere so finding OEM parts is gonna be easier overall. Good video.
All that goes out the window with the new sportster. It's different in every way from the previous model. If parts availability is a concern the scout would definitely be the winner here at least for now

I chose Scout Bobber, immediately i wanted to try it out although it was a mild rain. what i found out to be a weird flaw of this that the rear fender doesnt work at all and my whole back and event helmet was covered in mud after 20min drive. surprisingly there is a hardly even a mention about this fact which i find really annoying cause whats the point of the fender in that case? did noone test it? am i the only one with this experience? i did some silvertaping magic for now as a chinese fender is coming soon. but it doesnt look pretty.

Enjoyed you're review. I have a 2015 fist run Scout. I've put over 35K miles on her....with not a singe issue. I have not ridden the new Harley yet so I can't compare. I can tell you that the Scout is an awesome bike all around. I have done things like pipes, Ohlins shocks, and tires are a must. Two up is no problem with better shocks too. Nothing to complain about. 125 miles on a tank around town... 150 miles on the highway. And after 150 miles, you're ready to get off anyway. I'll have to go test ride the Harley but honestly it would have to be a lot better in every way to get me to switch. Cheers!
Nice review. I’ve owned both (well, the old Sportster) and the Scout was better in every regard. You nailed it on the range. Both are pathetic. The Scout was slightly better, but has a six speed.
I like the features of the new Sportster but is doesn’t look like one anymore. The old one was such a beautiful bike and with pipes, there isn’t a better sounding bike.
Indian got me with the Scout and then kept me with the Challenger. I sincerely wish HD would start listening to its customers instead of chasing millennials who don’t have jobs, can’t ride or drive and don’t buy motorcycles. But it’s their funeral.
Indian does listen. I agree the Scout is due for a change and am looking forward to seeing it. They make a much better motorcycle right out of the box.

i ciriticised harley for not to have a cornering abs on their bigger (and expensive bikes). this is a must have in my opinion in this type and price range harley is in. now they have it (if now only in the new sportster, but at least in this new model) and someone is critizising it. ok its expensive, but it is a powerfull bike and it should have it.
H-D iron for the win.
I ride a 2019 Iron 883 that's had the 1200 kit put in so she has some grunt. I bought it second hand for $16,990 but it only had 1,300km on the clock and had a ton of extra work done to it, like stage 2 exhaust and 2 up seat.
End of the day I got a bike that was obnoxiously loud and fun to ride for well under 20k.

Both are great bikes. I’d say you choose an Indian with a blue collar wallet, and the Sportster S if you have an upper management wallet.
Well, wrong bike compared. The FTR 1200 S would have been more appropriate as that is the Indian Sportbike.
There's a 4,000 difference in MSRP, that's practically negligible to differentiate blue collar vs. upper management. What you're describing is like going from a Honda to a BMW.
You look at the indian chieftain and harley sg there all over priced and even there used bikes are way too high
@@briangebert8927 HD is definitely overpriced. The chieftain is the luxury build and not meant to be cheap. But that type is not my style.

I’m a Harley guy I currently have a 21 broking special and I love the air cool bikes feel and sound I would never go for the sports dress but in saying that and answering your question out of those two bikes I’d go for the Indian

Wrong bike compared. It should have been the Indian FTR 1200 S compared to the Sportster S. Both are the respective companies' sportbikes. Look at the FTR and you will see that it has that beefy look while maintaining Indian's beautiful classical looks.

Hi. Thanks for the review and comparison. I think 3 major points which should've been compared in addition are. 1. The adjustable suspension on the HD and the difference in tyres and sizes, HD having fat cool looking modern tyres. If you want a fat rear tyre look, the HD wins. And lastly, if you want a stock option for a pillion, then the Indian for the win. $6000 difference is huge and a pillion option and exhausts for the HD, probably becomes $10000 difference. At this moment I can't decide to be honest. I'm sure different things will be more important to every individual. Oh and, HD exhaust is so dysfunctional and dangerous for burns. Harley should've designed like either the Fat Boy and/or Bob. Regards.

I don't understand this comparison, as I believe the scout is intended to compete with the iron 883, with both being entry level models with similar price points, with the iron 883 still costing more than the base scout (in the US)
I just bought a 2024 Sportster S and put a TBR exhaust on it and it sounds like a Harley now and I absolutely love that bike One of the big selling points was all the digital features so I could link everything that I wanted to the bike. I love both of the bikes but hands down the Harley is better to me.
I have a smoke jade 21 scout bobber. I could have gotten the sportster, and the bike looks awesome, but when does a bike become something more than what I really want? My bike is not my daily driver. I want style, and as much as a 120hp sounds sexy, when am I ever really going to use that? Simply was not worth the extra 6k that I could pour into my customizations. My scout gets comments every time I take it out (not that I am looking for them it just happens). And man when I am walking to my bike, parked next to other bikes, I still say to myself "Can't believe that one is mine..." As for the missing tech, I have that in my helmet and gloves (where I think it kinda belongs anyway, rear camera, heads up display etc).
Harley is not trying to attract the 40+ year-old regular customer with this, a new breed and generation, that is tech savvy and appreciates these options, this is the second In a whole new Harley Davidson lineup, and if they kept it like the Indian, it would be "more of the same"...and defeat the whole purpose.
Watch the next gen Indian be alot like this Sporster S, this is showing HD is getting ahead of the curve, slowly putting Indian in need of a revamp already..

I really like both bikes and depending on what I was looking for I could go either way the Sportster is definitely millennial driven technology speed I mean everything about it whereas the scout is really set to be a bike for anybody not too flashy but the looks are incredible obviously but I like both

I was leaning towards a HD. But it is the Indian that has definitely got my attention. Style and the way it looks.

The harley Sportster S is a cool bike and probably a very fun ride. Sadly it's priced out of it's own segment. Isnt the cheapest bike in Harley's line up the softail standard now?

As a kid I was a huge Harley fan. Nightrod was my dream bike. Last year however I saw Indian scout for the first time and I fell in love. I love cruiser style bikes and Indian Scout is one hell of a beauty.

Both are great bikes i rode both of them but i like the sportster S more ‘ one of my friend has sportster S he installed a Tbr exhaust on it sounds amazing very loud like ducati or moto gp exhausts kind

I'm going to sign the paperwork on my (new to me) 2016 Scout Sixty in two days. It's going to suck having to wait a couple of months to ride it. I'll probably just sit there, looking at it longingly. Lol

You definitely touched on the most important differences between these two bikes.I own a 19 indian scout bobber. It's not perfect sometimes I wish it had more rear suspension. The stock pipes always look to long for the bike. I do love my bike. The HD exhaust sounds alittle to much like a sport bike. The price is definitely to high. I feel like harley was trying to out do indian. Because they were selling well. I enjoy watching the rivalry between Indian and Harley to see what's next.
I have a 17 Sixty. I don't care for the pipe's looks, too fat - though I like the sound. But I want no more LOUD bikes and all the after market stuff that looks better is too loud. So, no change. Not a big deal. I love my Scout also. Plus I had plenty of budget to personalize it (as everyone does). The Scout has been a remarkably reliable bike for the 40,000 miles I have put on it in 3 years. I'd be interested in seeing how the S does in that regard after similar age and miles. Even if I wanted the S, I'd not buy it until it's been out several years. I like to see a service and reliability track record. The Scout is just a damn fun bike to ride. That's what matters.

I bought the harley and I'd do it again. More harley dealers than Indian so if I need maintenance or broke down its a better option for me personally. My first bike didn't have tech and I wanted my second bike to have plenty. I also love my headlight I like that it's square. I've had the old I want the new. I don't need the same/similar rendendition of the same bike I already have.
The Indian without a doubt, sounds great, heavier solid bike and Looks Amazing!
As a bobber owner I'm considering the Sporster S as a sportier scout replacement, having a lil more HP / Torque and mostly for the lean angle.
As for the aesthetics though... I'm not into it, though swapping lights, exhaust and plate mount would solve quite a bit imo.
Also about fuel consumption : 250km range for the scout sounds like a lot to me (low gas warning light turns on around 170 / 180 km on average), I guess you should cut by 20% if you're enjoying your ride and not focused on saving fuel.

Have to disagree with you with respect to the Harley electronic features especially the cornering ABS. Most of us are not GP riders and have mediocre skills. So any electronic assist will improve safety and avoid accidents.
Recently I had an accident on A BMW GS through a corner precisely due to lack of ABS. I front braked through a sharp corner with some gravel in a split second decision ( error on my part) and the resulting lock up sent the bike in a wobble that could not be recovered. Luckily no serious damage to my body or the bike but here is a situation that cornering ABS could have averted a potential disaster.
I guess my safety is worth the extra 4K USD.
I would go with the Indian Scout Bobber 20. Personally I think it looks way better and sounds better as well.
I would choose the Harley. And all the things that you are talking about it can do, is one of the reason i like it. And it look better in my eys, and i like that is not so noisy like other Harley. :-)
