I made a basket that came out beautifully using corrugated cardboard on the sides. It worked so well, I am going to grow potatoes in a laundry hamper, and layer my potatoes to come out the sides but keep the compost in with the corrugated board, which I wet first and it shapes beautifully, composts quickly and is inexpensive.
Created 4 pots this Spring using your video for instructions, WOW! The pots turned out beautiful, now we are into September, they are so full & still blooming profusely. Thank You for your simple timely instructions. I may never plant an ordinary hanging pot again. Was looking to see if I could send photo, but do not see that option. Thanks for sharing! 💜
Thank you for being so detailed and explaining why you put certain plants where you did. I now feel more confident about making replanting my hanging basket.
After watching this I don’t think you charge enough for this basket! 😊 this was so helpful. Thank you very much for taking such pains to record and share this with us! Really appreciate it. ❤
I agree... the whole job is carefully thought out for maximum color & showiness, the container is planned for successful results should the purchaser not forget to water it. The result will be Outstanding !! You could definitely charge more !! I loved this video... THANKS !! 😃
my question is after summer do I pull the flowers out? they're not good for next year? but I can reuse the soil and moss? Or reduce the hole basket with everything new thank you for all your help I'm new to gardening and I just love this video and I think I can do this I just so excited I've never even thought I could do something this beautiful ❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩🤩 thank you from the bottom of my gardening heart ❤️❤️
Your voice is so pleasing to the ear, kept my attention without being loud. I never knew this much work and thought went into a basket. But it soooo worth it. You've inspired me to try or at least more appreciative when I buy one. Lovely!
In my youth I worked in a greenhouse making hanging baskets for the early and late season sales. Every time I was given a wire basket by a customer, I used to dread it. Had I seen this vlog I would have done a better job. A lining of Pro-Mix or Garden Compost bale is a brilliant idea! Now the 3 wire baskets I was given at my retirement will be filled with Proven Winner plugs this summer! Thanks for this tutorial!
I appreciate you showing your technique for doing a hanging basket. You put a lot of variety in your baskets. The picture of a basket in full bloom is beautiful.
The hanging baskets i buy here in Australia, have coconut fibre inside the basket. I line that with a plastic bag, with small holes to prevent dry winds from going straight through the coconut fibre, and drying the soil out quickly. It works as a barrier. Some of our winds here are very hot and dry.
Tim, you succeeded in getting me to have a go from scratch without any gardening skills. I’m looking after my 91 year old mum and thought I’d brighten up the place for her. Thanks to your how-to video I’ve only gone and made not 1, not 2, but count ‘em 8 14 inch hanging baskets! 6 weeks in now and I’m frankly astonished at the results they just keep on giving more and more. I modified the traditional method you use here because the sphagnum moss around here wouldn’t hold together very well and was expensive for the modest pack so I used my conifer hedge clippings instead (free) together with half of a wool/moss basket liner (cheaper). Could only find lobelia plant plugs (clearance £1 tray of 6, so snapped up 6 trays of mixed lobelia) and used them in the second layer together with standard garden centre 4cm pots, 6 or 7 per basket. First basket took me 6 hours learning the ropes, the rest under 2 hours each. Once again many thanks for the ‘you can do it’ inspiration.
I really appreciate this lesson and the three layers,I am preparing to do my hanging baskets and now that I know to layer will make a huge difference.Thanking you kindly.
What a great demo! Small details shared can make or break a creation. One suggestion is to provide a printed list of plants used. Many are not available in plugs locally, so names will allow seed shopping.
Very good Tim. Well done. I will continue to buy hanging baskets as usual from you , which are amazing. They are filling my garden with great look. I will leave it you do for me. Thank you. Vish
Wonderful, thank you so much for the list of plants used in the layers! I would love to see the full grown update - I will check out your other videos and look for one. :) Great work!
🎉This is beautiful!! Thank you! I can appreciate the care it took to create this so perfectly...I want one!! The photo of the 'end of summer' hanger is magnificent!!❤❤❤
That is a very good price for the time, effort and care you have put into that basket! Thank you for the tips on the moss and how to arrange it. I always worry that its all just going to fall through the holes.
Thank you, your video will change the way I prepare my baskets this spring. Unfortunately we are just comming into winter in southern Australia so I will have to be patient
You are smashing that purple shirt! Now I have to go hunt up some baskets that are flat on the bottom. Thanks ever so for all the information, I can't wait to try out your method in the next couple weeks.
Thank you for the detailed video. Love to have a few of these planters around my yard. Also, thank you for providing the names of the plants you used. You did such a wonderful job with it.
@@timstopgardentips9634 ahhh awesome...a lot of us folks, like to see the end result..helps to motivate us further. After i saw your video, i started planting flower's n veggies.

I was just thinking, this week, about what plants to put in my hanging baskets. Thank you so much for sharing your technique and plant list! I am so excited to making some for my porch and patio. ❤
Watched to the very end, I pretty much know how to do all that you showed, but wanted to see the end result after they have bloomed. Disappointed you didn't show that. Maybe you have another video showing the result. I will look.
Excellent! I don’t know how long ago this was made ? Because ours are in the 100 hundreds to buy now - that was before Covid. So I can imagine how much they are now. This video is invaluable now days . I will be making my own! Thanks again 😊👍
Thanks Rhonda. We try to keep the baskets affordable, especially in the current climate. The video was made in 2022, but we have kept our prices the same for the last 10 years. Probably why we drive such old cars :D
Beautiful, Tim. I must confess I only stumbled onto your video, and with no intention of making my own hanging basket. But I was captivated and am now inspired to give it a go. What also helped hold my attention -- and I know how you Brits just luuuuv it when we Yanks fetishize your accent 🙄 -- was listening to you speak. If only you could provide the voice-over for all the corporate lectures I have to sit through, my retention rate would skyrocket. What say you? 🤞
WOW very impressive!!! Certainly makes me appreciate the price of these. Uses lots & lots of plants, compost & moss...does seem like a bargain once you see this!
wonderful video showing how to create a beautiful hanging basket! would you show your viewers please, how to set up a watering system to keep the planters getting the right amount? would you also show how to attach the baskets to the wall to keep stable in the event of wind and or stormy weather. Thank you Tim!
Wow! Great ideas for next year, since all my baskets are planted this year. Should have watched your video first for ideas. For water retention, instead of putting in the crystals, I buy a small bag of baby diapers, cut off all the useless parts that don't absorb water, then lay what's left in the bottom of the basket. It expands with moisture when I water it and then if I have to miss a day or two, it slowly releases the moisture into the pot. Some July and August days get really hot and dry here in Wisconsin USA, and if I'm away from home it saves my plants. It's also a ton cheaper than the crystals.
Great to watch you make the hanging baskets. I noticed that you use small plug plants to fill the basket. When bought from a nursery the root area is much larger making it far more difficult to get so many plants in the top.
Yes, that's true. I'd probably use around 7 or 8 9cm potted plants if making them that way. Also, shaking off the compost from the pot and even trimming the roots down can help fit them in, especially when planting them in the side. Next year we will make a "How to make your hanging baskets at home" video using larger plants, thanks for the suggestion :)
I did mine yesterday lol not quite like yours but I didn't have enough sphagnum moss I put string to hold it in around the outside after the plants grow you won't be able to see it . I put lots in so let's see how it looks hoping like your beautiful thank you for showing your way of doing a flower basket
Im sure yours will be lovely. Sometimes, if the moss is poor, straggly or too stringy we will put a layer of fine net just to hold it, or if the baskets have larger, non-standard holes etc.
I was hoping to see some after pictures. Just a suggestion to take photos of your baskets once they fill out so we can see what they look like with the flower choices you made

All the action was in frame. This was perfect to watch on my phone
