Can I Turn These Small Petunia Baskets Into Showpieces?

  • Picked up some petunias at local box stores (Walmart, Home Depot, and Meijer) with the hope of turning them into great hanging baskets. The varieties of plants include: Wave petunias, SuperCal petchoas, Bees Knees petunia (likely), Headliner Enchanted Sky petunia (likely), and two mystery petunias.
I planted them with a bit of time-release osmocote fertilizer and then used a water-soluable MiracleGro with Bloom Booster (normally, I'd fertilize weekly).

I'm a clearance rack junkie ! 😁 I had gotten so many plants off there, that had no identifier, no clue what it is. Take it home, water, fertilize, after repotting and within 2 days I fall in love. ❤ if they have new growth, or enough to propagate, ill buy it !. Prices are reduced and most just need some TLC !

I bought (at half price) a rose off the 'hospice shelf' at my local box store at the end of summer. When I got it down from the relatively high shelf, I saw it was sicker than I had thought, but I couldn't just say 'go back and die', so I took it/her home & did what I could. Then I was unexpectedly away for 3 months & assumed I'd find it had 19:26 died in my absence. Not so, & I just trimmed her & left her under cover for the rest of the winter. Come spring, she was putting out healthy, lively growth; I planted her in a well-amended hole in full sun, and she (now named 'hospice Rose') produced lovely red blooms and looks ready to do so again this summer. Now I look regularly at the orphans' & hospice shelves there for my next Dickensian garden chapter. Never underestimate the recovery power of neglected plants. (I don't take in animals!)

Roses are much heartier than a lot of people realize! Which is part of the reason I've been growing them the last 15 years, partially. They're so gorgeous, there are so many varieties and I have several of them. Something that's been incredibly interesting is how some come back in completely different colors some years or even in mixed colors. I made sure to plant the white ones especially far away from the colored ones. It also said knockout when I bought them, and looked like knockouts. They're red, pink, white and climbing this year! I'm having to tie them up, way up. I'll cut them back drastically next January or February. I'm not afraid to barber a rose lol. They come back better than ever. These caught me by surprise this year. Flowers are such wonderful, beautiful things to plant, watch grow and fill my yard with as much gorgeousness as I can ❤❤❤❤

You're brilliant and pack a lot of information into a fairly short period of time. This is only my second year to grow petunias, although they've been a huge favorite for years. I was afraid to try, honestly. I'm a roses 🌹 person, usually. My husband did the re-potting 2 years ago. Sadly, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away March 1st. The ones he did were actually spectacular. I decided in his honor, I'd plant petunias as well as this year. You've been so much help. Some other people didn't give enough information. I don't need anybody to skip a single step right now!!! I'm preparing to re-pot my petunias. You have another video im returning to for this. Wish me luck! This is a very informanational video. I love it simply because of the difference of these plants. Glad you tried it for us

I love your channel so much I had to subscribe. You are a master teacher of Petunias. I love how you took us from beginning to end (months of growing) and the outcome is amazing i always dead headed my Petunias and they never looked like yours. I did not know they come back the following year. I need to get fertilizer for the plants i just repotted. Thank you so much. I live in PA. Donna xoxo

I’ve never had a petunia come back in Michigan… this video is over a few months, not a winter. Start with a premium petunia and you’ll be pleased with the results.

Great refresher video on petunias. I, too, am a plant saver. If there is some green on the plant, it will grow! Thanks!

The basket I was gifted from Lowes was crammed with plants and I repotted them. I added two more, but probably could have done a third. They're thriving now in our mild Florida spring, zone 10b, and I'm looking forward to seeing how far into summer they survive. Thanks for your ideas!

I couldn’t watch the cutting back of the petunias! It’s as if I am cutting myself. Just can’t do it! However I really enjoyed the rest of the video. It gave me an incentive to get started! Thank you for the information.

I have never been able to grow petunias they always look like crap and never do much. But thanks to you. I’m going to try it again this year and see if I have success.

Maybe try a Supertunia or Easy Wave petunia -- those are consistently good performers.

My goodness, i think I saw a replay of Morticia Lololol!! Just had to put that in my comment Lol!! I so love petunias and I love the old-fashioned purple ones because they are so fragrant. Superbells are really bright and beautiful but no fragrance. Wish they could do a new mutation to include fragrance in them. Mutation is probably the wrong word, but you will know what I mean. Enjoy your beautiful flowers this season!!

Great video! Everyone loves petunias, especially super-petunias or waves. It’s almost time to make a few big pots of petunias & something? For the front porch which gets full sun all day except for the evening. Please do some more of these videos showing how you potted these and the stuff we would need to do it. Thanks.

Love your video. I always have trouble with my baskets. I thought it was because they were just grown out. But now I know that I need to transplant them for them to preform longer. I too live in Michigan.

    • @UpNorthGardenMI

Transplanting can make a big difference. I’ve seen people keep those smaller baskets looking pretty good for a long time, but they are very good at watering and fertilize a lot.

Wonderful experiment. And comparisons. Taking longer to hide the spent blooms is definitely something we can choose when selecting modern plants. I would be interested in seeing some coneflower comparisons... there are just so many varieties now, are they all the same in regards to needing deheading for continual blooming? Are there more improvements as opposed to just visual differences (and similarities), like earlier blooming thus longer season?

Will self watering pot impede root growth? I have a self watering pot and I wonder if doing drop irrigation would be a better option for them.
