    Part 4 - Building a Bait Box - • How to Build a Crayfis...
    Part 5 - How to Use the Trap - • How to Build a Crayfis...
    Hey everyone, today we'll be building a crayfish trap. This is my favorite style of trap so far, keep in mind that this is my first year of building traps and using them. The material for one trap plus a bait box should cost $5 or less from most hardware stores.
    In this first part, we'll go over the basic design of the trap, materials, and start cutting out most of the pieces. The trap itself is made of plastic hardware cloth with a 1/2” mesh. One full roll of 3'x15' mesh should yield six normal sized traps. The basic finished trap will be around 9”x17”.
    Materials:
    Plastic hardware cloth - www.homedepot.c...
    Waterproof twine, coated wire, or heavy synthetic thread for stitching
    Scissors or snips for cutting
    Cardboard or poster board, etc. for laying out cone template
    Rubberbands and wire for securing the trap and bait box
    Below are a couple of sites that really helped me out when learning about crayfish traps. I'm not affiliated with either site and am not personally endorsing the traps for sale from either site. Both are packed with information that will help you build your own traps and do your own trapping, no matter what your goals are.
    www.terrybullar...
    Terry Bullard's site is a wealth of information regarding crayfish traps. He makes his own traps and has done commercial crayfish trapping as well. His traps are well designed, though they are hard to get a hold of and usually not available for sale. His articles on crayfish bait and how crayfish think are very interesting and are really helpful for building your own traps.
    www.trapperarne...
    Trapper Arne's site is a great place to find articles on different aspects of crayfish. He sells several traps of different styles. Most are based on traditional Swedish trap styles and are mostly imported from Sweden.
    Please make sure to check all local laws and regulations regarding catching crayfish. There may be seasons, catch limits, and even restrictions on they type of traps you can use. Some places limit what a trap can be made of, so this trap may not be legal in all areas. Please be responsible and check your traps often and leave the places where you trap better than when you arrived.
    Do not put crayfish in a bucket of water, they use a lot of oxygen and will drown once all the oxygen is gone. Crayfish can survive for long periods as long as their gills stay moist.

    Howdy! I built your trap today. Thanks for sharing this with us. Seems like all the commercial traps are sized for the smaller fish found in the south. So I was really happy to find a 'local neighbor' who has this all figured out for us to copy. The only thing I did differently is instead of using the nylon thread to whip-stitch I went with black zip-ties. Now I can't wait for the season to open in the Spring. This will be my first time trying crayfish trapping. I'll be working the Pend Oreille River near Ione, WA. Thanks again.

    Great vid. I liked it. I just watched part 1 so maybe you said this in other parts, but I'll remind watchers and readers to know state and local regulations on crayfish trapping. Not only are season, tagging, and buoy regulations common, but size restrictions on length, outer radius, and inner radius differ from state to state as I have trapped crayfish in 3 different states and had to buy and use different traps to adhere to local regs.

      His door is 'way too much work. I just cut 3 sides of the door and leave the 4th attached. Bend out of the way to access the inside. Use 3 bread bag wire ties to fasten the door shut.

    • @brandonjohnson8635
      @brandonjohnson8635 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kenhulme181 Zip ties will be more durable and work much better than twisty ties. I'm in the middle of this build using small thin zip ties. You want to use ones that are made for outdoor use though as they will hold up better to uv exposure and whatnot.

    • @davidzerga7527
      @davidzerga7527 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mesh is often referred to as chicken fencing as is is used to build chicken pens. You can purchase it at any of the big box and farm supply stores. I have found it at Lowe's and Orchard Supply. A 3x25 foot roll is about $20.

    $5 bucks - yea right! The plastic mesh alone cost anywhere from $20 - $40 (cheapest I managed to find is on Amazon) - then shipping ontop of that - This trap would set me back $60 or more just for the plastic - Love the concept though and wish there were someone out there that could make them to order

    • @thirtypthulse582
      @thirtypthulse582 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      $60 maybe, but I built 6 from a 15' roll, and I still have a bunch left, so my cost is about $3.50ea.

    • @wonhungloe8326
      @wonhungloe8326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My local Wal-mart has the mesh for $12.94 but it is 1 inch and you could use it as well. Lowes home improvement has the mesh fo $25 a roll. Now either roll you get is 3'x15 of 25 or what ever you want to buy. If "you" make just one trap then sit back and say "how much did i spend" you sound dumb. Plain and simple. But sit and make 6 out of a rool and do the math. Don't troll people helping others. Makes you look bad. As in not too bright or smart.

    It says how to make one for under $5 but the mesh alone in the home depot link in the description costs $15!!! How is that less than $5?

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Joseph Soto It's less than $5 for one trap. You can make about six traps plus some extra pieces from one roll of mesh. I've also found this mesh cheap or free at garage sales.

    • @josephsoto7262
      @josephsoto7262 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BackyardBowyer so what would you say the smallest size of mesh I can buy and still have enough to make this trap would be? What is the amount of mesh used for one trap?

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joseph Soto 28.5 inches of a 3 foot wide roll will make one trap. If you have slightly less, the trap can be scaled down a little, as the trap we're building here is considered a medium sized trap by most standards.
