When I was a kid in the mid late 80's in Oregon some people taught me how to build one of these crawfish traps. Now its 2024 and i was thinking of making the same basic cylindrical trap and here you are doing the same basic trap, amazing. thanks for the step by step refresh. Now I'm in California this is great and i am sure there are some restriction like everything for having fun. thanks again.
Thanks for posting this. I spent 30 minutes out in the garage trying to make a "perfect" cone. Thanks to your video I know now how to do it right. Thanks JOE!
Ill let you know I have built ten of these traps. my 5 and my wife thought it was a blast so I built her 5 units also. we are slaying the mudbugs up here in the Pacific Northwest. This is a simple yet extremely effective design! great video.
Used your excellent instructional video to build a couple of these out of 1/2" galvanized hardware cloth and have caught many crawfish up in the Sierra lakes with them. Best baits for me have been fish varieties of cat food - tuna, salmon, etc. and a fish carcass if I have one. Am going to build two more using 1/4" mesh galvanized hardware cloth but with small 1" openings in the cones to use strictly as Minnow traps for fishing live bait for Crappie & Catfish. Thanks Joe & Zach!
Thanks for the video. Watching you catch crawfish inspired me to build some traps and try it myself. Built 4 over the weekend then got them in the water for a 20 hour soak. Caught 27 on the maiden voyage, not too bad. Good luck the rest of the season!
pay attention to your area regulations on wire size..in my area it is 1 inch wire mesh and a certain regulation for the opening...great video guys god bless you and yours
When I was a kid I went crawdad hunting with my grandpa and my brother. We would catch tons of them by hand. I have never heard or even thought about using a trap to catch them until I saw your first video in this series. Thank you so much for sharing how to make one. I think me and my cousins may just have to make some of these and try them out. Of course, we will still catch some by hand with the kids....just to much fun to skip out on. lol
I made these and pulled quite a catch! What surprised me is that California doesn't have a limit on how many you can use. I called the fish and game office and they confirmed that, so I made four of them. Thanks for the awesome video!

I made 10 more of these traps for the 2015 season, they work great and are very sturdy.. can't wait till spring here in Iowa, mouth is already watering :)
might i suggest that instead of a wire to keep the lid shut that you have to constantly undo and rethread through the holes.. take an old ball ppoint pen and take the spring off the ink tube inside... attach one end to the center of the edge of the door where your wire is currently at.. then on other end of spring attach an old fish hook with barb cut off. you can then stretch the spring and hook the hook in a hole for quick and easy opening and closing.
I just got to Baton Rouge a week ago and I will be here for a while. I am so interested in catching crawdads! Course I can go to any restaurant but nothing like catching a fresh dinner. Thanks for your videos I'm exited to put what I have learned to use. Thank you.
Im down here in Louisiana right now myself about a half hour from Baton Rouge. Talking with people it sounds like they are still catching the crawdads like crazy. Sounds like all you have to do is get the traps set and you should be catching some fresh dinner. Thank you. Joe

You're the first person in Minnesota Ive seen on youtube crawfishing. Great job on the catch i'm fixing to try after I build my traps. Another good tip is to have the openings of the mesh at least half inch according to dnr. Also have name and address tags.
Great video guys and good directions You got a like from me. I sent the 3 part series for the video response. Hope everyone likes them as much as I like your video, enjoy...
Hey thanks for the great videos. Here in North Carolina we had a overly soaked spring and summer didn't need a trap because they were all over the yard. Of course the yard was under about six to eight inches of water for a good portion of time. Your videos and the Crayfish infestation I had have caused me to get out my rabbit hutch wire (which just happens to be exactly the same as you are using) and pop a few off now.) Still finding the little morsels around too. Dropping Traps this weekend.
Cool vid, but a good tip is next time you make another trap, try to use zipties to connect everything. its alot easier and it saves alot of time. and thanks for making awesome videos, i watch you channel every day, hoping to find more cool vids
I like to use items that are hanging around the house. Cheap thin split rings like Master Lock keys come on work well as rope attachment points on the cage. Every household has dozens of chrome plated paper clips just laying around. Straightened out and wrapped around the shaft of a #2 Phillips screwdriver to make a "spring" looking thing can be cut down one side with a pair of side cutters making lots of connection rings to tie your cage and cones together. Survival means making do with less.
Great tutorial, built the traps like your video but changed 1 thing. Put the door at one of the ends instead of the middle. A lot easier to get the crayfish out so you don't have to shake the trap so much to get your crayfish. Also went way aster with zip ties.
That really cool joe... i may have to try and make one and see if I can catch so crawfish....I got to make more rabbit cages so may just have to make some traps too....hope all is well up north and that the fishing is good...... Greetings from NC......Tim

OK, Funny thing, I made your traps... and it was FUN.. but I'm not very handy so combined they took me 5 hours.. Your video was excellent and if i followed it exactly I'm sure I would have saved an hour or so... If I went to work earning 20$ per hour... I could have bought traps online for 40$-50$...... Just food for thought.. I'll try your smoker next!! BTW I cant wait to start catching with your traps!!

Just made a couple of these last night Joe! I got into trapping crawdads last year after I started watching your videos. Another thing I got into last year was jug lining for snapping turtles. Ever thought of doing that? It's fun and they taste good. Would love to see some videos of that!
I made 3 traps from a 10' roll. I set them up in 3 different places, 2 of which I've caught them by hand. My only question is do you think the recent river floods could have anything to do with why I only caught one small cray?
nice looking trap there joe, but what do you put the bate in?you know the livers will flot to the top ,tell me if i am wrong, maybe i will see you load the bate on the next one, thanks for the video,

Joseph Jackson Crayfish, Crawfish, Mudbugs, Crawdads,Yabbies. Many names and they all taste awesome. Good luck with your catfishing. I have videos on me catching them down in Louisiana. YUM!!
Add a strip of high stick tape across at the mid-point edge so it is easier to measure as cutting. I made 4 using J clips and pliers for them= rectangular profiles 2 different entry profiles. Watch out for the cut wires as they will POKE you fast. Really heavy duty Duct type ACE tape will form around the edges and keep fingers a lot safer. The door can be solid 19 gauge stainless steel or even lighter; the crawfish will not care. Hinges of wire or J clips. Dimensions on that Cone jig?
Got my wire & wire ties -planning to use cage clips to fasten most of it, since I already have about 5 lbs of cage clips. Still have to look up the formula for the cone (will cut a test cone from waste paper or something disposable since I'm po'). Need some line for hauling in the traps and some water resistant tags (traps in this state must be clearly marked with owner's ALS#) and I'm in business.
I cut a 30 inch square of rabbit wire, fitted it in the end of my trap then cut the excess off the top of the cone. Then made a smaller cone/port fitting into the holes of the cone, worked great.
hey joe i was just wondering if there is crayfish/crawfish in mississippi river and are they safe to eat never ate crayfish before i would really appreciate your help and thanks again for teaching
@@JoeandZachSurvival " you have no clue. I should look that up." Go back and watch your own video. A 9 inch stencil will give you a 4 1/2 inch cone a 18 inch stencil will make a ???.
Making one and gonna try it tonight. Bought a store bought one and didn't seem like the hole was actually big enough for some to get in. Some of these signal's we got in WA are huge.
DelusionalProductions read your regulations, most states limit what size you can have for that openeing. Also remember that they can crawl back out if its too big. Good luck and thank you. Joe
Thank you for making this video. My son and I built one from this video. I have noticed you are using pillow traps in Louisiana. Out of the two types what do you think works best?
+joshs kids 100% hands down the cylinder type with the 1/2 inch mesh. They are not legal in Louisiana but if they were I would be getting high numbers. If you made the trap like in this video and get a spot where there are crayfish you will have no problem catching them. Please let me know how you do and what state your in etc. I find this very interesting. Good luck to you and your Son. Thank you. Joe
+JoeandZachSurvival We are in Northeast Alabama. I put it out in a creek and it was stolen in under 5 hours. So we threw some of the pillow traps together today after Church and put them out. If the traps don't get stolen and there are crawfish in them I will build more barrel types, but they are much tougher to make than the plastic pillow traps. I will let you know how it goes.
Very good video I have started building my first one. I have constructed hundreds of cages over many years so I have cage clips and the tool to use them. You might visit your local farm store to check them out, for those of you making several.
This is completely off the top of my head here, Have you ever used a similar ½" mesh but in a plastic like you might see in a garden? Might be easier to work with, not so sharp, all depends whether the fish will cut through it or not?
Also, I'm kinda broke. But, I have a lot of chicken wire in my barn would that work as well? That's what I've been using to make my crawdad traps. I'm nervous that the craw will get out through the open wire. Please comment! Thanks Joe.
Okay, I was also wondering how long do you leave your traps out? I have left mine out for about 34 hours now. There is plenty of food in there for them to munch on. I've used clams, bacon and smelly sardines. What's a bait you recommend?
I've noticed that when I put my store bought traps in, a lot of crawfish get out. I know they're eating the bait, but I think the hole is too big. What do you think of store bought traps? I'm thinking about making my own trap. What do you think?
***** You are correct. The legal size in Louisiana is a 3/4 inch by 11/16 inch mesh size. This allows for the smaller ones to get out. Here in MN the legal size is 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch mesh size so you get more in the traps. making your own (or if your state does not have a size limitation) using minnow traps to catch them will produce higher yields. I just put my traps out for the first time this year here in MN this morning. Good luck. Joe
Hey Joe! I'm making your trap this weekend. When you made the cone, did you overlap the long edges when forming the cone? Or did you just but the long sides together? I read on a trapper's website that the silver mesh looks almost transparent to the craws and that makes them feel vulnerable to predators so I may try painting my traps. If nothing else it may make it harder for people to stumble on my traps and mess with them. Keep sharing your adventures with us!

Thank you. Joe

We are in Northeast Alabama.
I made one of these traps and the hardest part for me was the cone.I didn't cut a perfect half circle
Is that the rum river? I'm gonna make one of these and hit the St. Croix.
Very good video I have started building my first one. I have constructed hundreds of cages over many years so I have cage clips and the tool to use them. You might visit your local farm store to check them out, for those of you making several.
I think it would work better i your using the size of the squares because once u catch minows u get free bait :D
Back in NM we call them crawdads
Great video thanks!
How do you take the measurements for the cone??
Good luck. Joe
Canned cat food, just pop it open and close it back, enough for the juices to escape. That is the best!
