Finally! A quick-moving fishing video that doesn't feature a shot of some guy standing and talking. Slowly. Droning on and on and on... Very well done.
@@93tjfresh It pre-maturely kills the crawfish and it serves no purpose. You do not need salt to purge/clean them. All you need is a big kiddie pool or a big cooler. I prefer the kiddie pool because the crawfish will not stack up on each other as much, the weight of the crawfish stacking up on each other kills the ones on bottom plus it displaces oxygen. Just get yourself a bi kiddie pool and fill it up with some tap water. Let soak for and hour and drain the water... Do this 2-3X and they will be clean!
Used to catch em using a bucket and a stick.....put the bucket behind a rock turn rock over and stab the stick into the ground on the opposite site and they will swim right into the bucket
Wow soo many that's a really good example of a healthy fishery in your own back yard ! I wish I was a kid growing up in your part of the world I'd love it .
Wow this was the best video I’ve seen on here... I love learning and seeing how things are done and this was perfect. My one question is... when you go through the process of cleaning them for that long does that kill off more of them?
amazing stuff keep up the good work brother I've seen a lot of people frying right out of the creek it's good to know a way to clean them up like that, very good stuff man.
Excellent video! I ordered a trap on Amazon. When I was a boy, I would get barefoot, walk through the creek in my neighborhood and hurt grab crayfish with my bare hands. I could have the bottom of a bucket covered in an hour, but a trap is going to save me a lot of walking. I am going to get a pet cat and I love sardines. So, I think the first baits I will try in my Crawdad trap are semi- moist cat food (that comes in a pouch) and sardines in oil. I want the crayfish for a "natural" fish tank that I am creating that will not have the typical "tropical fish," but fish representative of the lakes around me, here in Northern Illinois. In college, I caught a small bluegill on a rod and reel and kept it in a 10 gal. tank in my apt. for years. This tank will have a pea gravel bottom, rocks from the beaches of Lake Michigan, live freshwater plants, crayfish, plecostomus, Google eyed goldfish and minnows. I am interested in eating some of the larger Crawdads that I catch. I'm assuming that you only eat the tail. Could you post your favorite recipe. We have a New Orleans style restaurant here in Chicago land called "Crawdaddy Bayou." I had the crowded tails in white sauce with cheese over linguine and it was fantastic. That with some garlic bread and a panettone Ribbon beer = heaven! 😉
Wow thanks brother. Just stumbled on this video. I've been dying to try crawfish. Didnt realize the amount of stuff that comes off and out of them. Thanks for the great tip. I'm heading out tomorrow. Folks from canada / southern Ontario say thank you.
@@livefreefishmore1008 well we went out with my 7yr old and caught about 25 in about 2 hrs. Not bad for a first run. We used 4 gal water jugs and 1 gal
Can they live in that water in the ice chest? You have to treat it is that just water hose water there’s no problem with a little bit of chlorine. Just curious.
Liza small ones taste better and you can catch a bunch relatively easy just go for a body of water with mostly small ones and then you have bait and tasty food
Thanks for this awesome video! I have a few questions that maybe a pro like you can answer. I just purchased three traps and I placed them overnight a couple times with chicken tided in his bait. It's super oily so I know which should be a good bait. I live in Upstate NY and catching hasn't been good so far. I noticed you talked about temp changing their behavior a little. What air temp is a good one to look out for for setting trap? It's been a bit chilly this year and it's only May. Is there a month that they're better to catch in? Also, I have tanks to keep them in before Ive gathered enough for a boil, how long do they last in a well aerated tank? Is there a point that I should feed them while waiting for a large enough batch, like a week?
It's still a little early for them up here. June and July it really starts to turn up. I usually don't lose any for 3 days or so with just clean cold water in a cooler (with aeration). After 3 days you can start to lose them if your water gets to warm.
Thanks for a great broadcast I'm in upstate NY I'm a new bee to survival. Do you need to have to coolers in a cold spot if you are leaving the crawfish in there for 48 hrs???
I usually just grab them out of the creek, i have some diy traps i use when i need a bunch of them, i use raw bacon. suspend the bait in the middle of the trap.
Is there a law that prevents making the hole in the trap larger (in order to catch larger crayfish)? I personally have no patience in eating this kind of tiny crayfish. On a bad year, I dump back everything under 10cm (4 inches), and on a good year everything under 11cm.
Really good video. I want to see how well they do for trout. The infor on cleaning your catch was very interesting. I would never have considered that on my own.
With air filtration does that also have a filter to clean out the dirty water or do you change the water and add new water just adding air to the water? Does that make sense? Hopefully. Subscribed!!
If you are one of the people responsible for the glorious supply of crawfish at my local store here in NY, I just want to say god bless you sir! I never really ate them because my entire family in Arkansas couldn't get over their bug like appearance. Despite that, I just kept hearing people say they tasted so good! So after trying some "Long John Silvers" and finding out that I absolutely LOVE shrimp, and also finding out that I love sushi, I figured I may like crawfish too. I must admit that I was originally put off by their look just like the rest of my family, but after I tore into my first few (very messy with no sense of technique) WOW the feast I was missing all that time. I regularly purchase these things now from my local store and even include them in my weight gain diet. They are absolutely superb!
Well made informative film, thx. That's quite a bit of good fish yr using to catch something that doesn't give you as much food in return without a lot of work. Does it make sense in terms of money?
I was planning on stocking my pond with crawfish this summer for the bass. It’s a rocky pond. I was wondering how often you pull up invasive craws because rusty craws are invasive in Michigan. Thanks for the video
Hi Matt. I may be wrong but it looks as though your snap has been replaced with a snap from another trap? It looks longer than my Gee's G-40 snap. Let me know. If you have replaced any snaps with imported snaps please let me know and I will replace them for you. The imported snaps are not the same wire thickness and the hook bends are inconsistent causing the snap to be faulty.
Joseph Moreno yes. Anything we catch down here (I live in Baton Rouge but am from Shreveport) you can catch up there. Most crawfish farmers have rice fields down here for commercial/large scale selling. But you can catch them anywhere. Red river, cross lake, Toledo Bend, Wallace lake etc...
How me and my family do it with is we grab a fishing rod, take the hook off because we don't want it to grab into something under the water. After that, we tie some food to the end of the rod. The most common here in fish heads, salami, snails, and really any kind of meat the crawfish can grab onto. And we also put a small rock or something heavy to weigh the food down. After we see that thing that in on top of the water and is colourful ( I forgot the name of it) move, we let it stay a bit longer and then we pull the rod slowly out and to the edge. We keep the crawfish just under the water untill we put a rod with a either a sack or an opened cage attached under the crawfish and lift it out. And we just put them in a bucked. You don't really need a fishing rod, you can use a long branch with string attached and tie the food and rock to the end of that.
I put a wire loop on the top of my southbend trap so that a little tension on the rope makes the trap land right side up. Good channel btw I plan on watching all of your vids.
