I just bought the Sklz rope for my nephew from Dicks to introduce him to jumping rope. (Time stamp 7:12). Super pleased with it for a beginner's rope...easy to adjust (the handle unscrews and there is a rope adjustment inside, snip what excess you don't need and screw it back on) plus nice feedback being a bit weighted. Good price for buying a rope to take a chance on!!

I started with the Ethos- 6 weeks later the rope disconnected from the crappy ball bearing
Sklz rope- rope cut itself at the handle because there’s no bearing
Ethos with better aluminum handles- lasted literally 3 workouts and then rope cut itself at the handle AGAIN!
Finally I ordered a Crossrope, should be here today
Would have been a lot cheaper to just start with the Crossrope.

The sum of all knowledge on any subject in a little black rectangle in our pocket. Thanks so much for sharing this and for making this effort to help beginners. Question I have is whether or not each of these cheap ropes are gonna last more than a month or two of heavy jumping...meaning 30 minutes a day 4-5 days a week. Many things seem great when brand new. Would not buy any of these ropes unless I saw a 2-month follow up video after you beat it up a bit. What do you think?

I got the orange and blue rope ones from Dick's. I agree that weighted handles does nothing. I'm looking at getting a Cross Rope system and eventually buying the entire line of weighted ropes and a mat. I'm looking at dropping 50lbs. I'm currently at 228, and want to get back to around 175. I have already started to lean out a bit, but not losing weight yet. My arms look more defined, my upper abdomen area is leaning out as well as my chest. I love jumping rope; it's easy, fun and it burns to much. The best part is I can do it for 30 minutes about 3-4 days a week, and throw in weight lifting. I can go up flights of stairs without getting tired at all, and I feel so energized. I found out about the Crossrope from another Sailor in my deployment zone and he got me hooked on trying out jump rope. Found you guys by researching jump rope workouts. You guys are awesome, and I can't wait to DO THE THING

I've got a cheapy leather rope from our UK equivalent of Dicks (got my JRD V set on order though!) and it makes sense what you say about the heavy handles but light rope.... I'm only a beginner so thought it was me but I keep losing track of the rope ... zero feedback and because it doesn't spin in the handle cleanly, the rope twists up after about a minute of jumping. Also, after a while those steel weights start to shunt back and forth in the handle once it compresses the little sponge disc which throws me off too. It's ok for what it is but I guess if I didn't know there was better ropes out there, I'd probably be thinking skipping wasn't for me by now so if any other newbies are feeling disheartened, it might be your rope!

I had lower back, hip pain, and sciatica nerve damage from the military and jumping has strengthened everything in me. Start of jumping for like 5 minutes a day and build up because too much at first is a lot on foot muscles and ankles and knees which is usually where lower back pain comes from

Most ropes you find are really junk. I recently bought the Crossrope for Get Lean. I had a decent one that was a heavy non kink plastic and it was fine. Cost me 9.99 but the Crossfitters at My gym asked me to borrow it which I stupidly did and someone stole it. Ah then to find another one. I bought a 29.00 cable rope with revolving handles and it was on sale at TJ Max and I’ve used it for 3 years. I’ve bought a couple more and they all have added up to way more than if I had just bought a good rope. The new Cross Rope is unbelievably nice and I feel so special.
Gyms supply ropes but they are cheap and everyone makes them too short. I taught a Middle School class a Jump Fitness for a Wellness Day. The kids LOVED it but they don’t really exercise in gym.

Great stuff. I went to Dick's picked up a speed rope with vented handles(love it, outside of the wind tunnel sound the handles make. The problem with manufacturers, they do not always put the length on the outside of the packaging. I am 6'2" and I like the ropes at 9'5"-ish so, I got lucky with the speed rope I bought. The one I bought has that adjustment around the top of the handles. I did not like it at first but, ropes like that MAKE you have perfect form. Just my opinion. I wish they all put the length on the outside of the packaging because it is fun trying new ropes. #dothething / do.the.thing(Brandon) I also have the 1lbs crossrope.

The problem with the weighted handle ropes is you step on the rope, the handle jerks out of your handle, and hits the ground. The handle shatters and the weights wont go back in. I've had like 5 of these which have ended that way. (jump ropes arent typically made for tall people it seems.
