As someone who's been behind the tills when this happens, the tills often decline them at a period set by the company, say 2 years, and there's no override on our end to make it accept it, because it's the company that does this, not the store, you'd legally have to take it up with the company, or call a useless customer support line, and they know by that point you'll probably just accept its more effort than its worth, same with if you remove a warranty void sticker, legally you still have a warranty, but try getting into that legal battle.
To clarify I'm not on their side, but the companies know workarounds to shaft you.
Sounds like you’re in the UK, this would only be applicable in the US and as this law was created awhile ago all tills in the US have been coded to accept them.

When I was a cashier, it would decline if it's expired, we couldn't just, override that
I need some help. Background info the student as been going out of there way to annoy my friend and I. We try to stop the by telling the principal but they keep using the excuse that they have a hard family life because there dad die. The student openly jokes about his dad’s death. One of the student in my class hit me many times with a ruler and it is on video but the school keep using the excuse that I said in the background info. Can I do any to stop it/get “justice”. He also says that he has mental issues and uses it as an excuse. If it makes a difference I also have a mental disability. Please help if you can we have been try to get something done and all we have gotten is the teacher to Monitor him more.

I Have over dozen panera bread gift cards that has only one month to use it. And they're expired. I wish someone could sue them and I could benefit from that too

What you’re supposed to say is “I’ll get my manager/supervisor” then eventually it’ll go to the manager of the store and they’ll have to say no or whatever they want to say. Most gift cards don’t even have expiration dates anymore.

While you can sometimes get a refund for any late fees on an expired gift card, the federal laws govern them, so they often last for 1 year as on the 13th month they get a katw fee reducing the dollar amount until they hit zero.

I guess it's different at other stores, but where I worked it wasn't US that accepted or declined cards, it was the machine. If the card showed up "Expired" on our screen, there was nothing we could do about it.

Be careful for viewers outside the US: it does not always work that way.
For exemple in France, it is illegal to put an expiration date on gift vouchers and cards issued by the shop BUT if it's a multi-shop voucher (like Chèques Vacances, Multi-branded vouchers for malls etc) it is still legal to put an expiration date on it and to enforce it.
Dude, it ain't even about the cashier or the gift card, it's the computer/register.
If you swipe or scan any card at a register and the register ain't having it, there ain't fuck-all a cashier can do about it. They don't even allow most cashier's to enter debit card numbers manually anymore because too many of them fell for phone scams and corpo's just took that ability away from them. Cashier's only exist to keep most customers paying honestly.
No cashier is gonna say "No we don't accept this card"
Even if they think the card you're using ain't gonna work, theyll just humor you and let you slide any card anyway. It's the register that decides what they take.
Even if by some fucky miracle, that you slide a Subway card at a Walmart, and the Walmart register recognizes the transaction as paid, the cashier ain't gonna go "Sorry you still can't have this milk"

E.g. I have a credit card with the Post Exchange for military business. They give me a gift card after I acquire enough points. It only lasts six months. From the date they mail it to me.

There's this new wave of "given up professionals" who just see nuanced problems of the world and, instead of using their knowledge and wisdom in tandem, just spout the knowledge and walk into the sunset.
And younger kids growing up with youtubers as their role models, seeing as how their parents stuck them in front of a screen instead of being parents, they'll be too naive and just believe that's all there is to it without knowing they needed wisdom.
Don't just do the easy part, spewing out what you learned in school and read in a book, teach the thinks only a lawyer could, a proper blend of smart moves and the right way to do them

I use gift cards almost daily and never once have they even checked for an expiration date, maybe it’s an Illinois thing but here it’s common sense that gift card don’t expire
Even if it’s a legality, lots (most) of stores have their own store policies that they can abide by. And 99.9% of this includes not accepting expired coupons,gift cards,or online savings links. The register will literally make it impossible to use even when it is swiped
I used a Walmart gift card on their website in 2013 and I finally spent the last dollar and change last year, it had been just sitting there that whole time unbeknownst to me 😆
Extra knowledge nugget. A ton of different stores have a workaround for this, by making the money on old gift cards slowly go away overtime without using it. So do keep that in mind. That 3 yr old $50 gift card may be empty.
I honestly never understood the value of gift cards. Like, why ever buy or give someone a certain amount of money in a specific store, restaurant, etc.? At that point just give people cash if you're incredibly unsure what to give. 😴

I've seen a couple of comments about karens discovering this, as though all hell might break loose in such event. As a retail cashier, I'd like to address that concern. For the record, if a karen comes to my register for help, I'm going to treat her like gold. If a misogynist comes to me, I'll extend him the same courtesy. That's my job, and if they're trying to use their gift card(s) within the legal time frame, I am duty-bound to honor those cards. Wanting one's legally defined due is not the same as having an entitlement attitude.

gift cards are a horrible idea, you’re essentially hoping that the person you give it to actually uses it, otherwise it’s wasted money, it just sits in their wallet or purse till they remember it’s there. Also why do they have expiration dates? You gave money for something that should be the equivalent value, but it expires??? You’re essentially giving the company free money.
This is probably the reason they drain your cards now when you don’t use them. Also points for rewards programs. Pizza Hut just emptied all my points for no reason at all and won’t give them back even tho I’ve used the points once a month like I was supposed to to keep my account in good standing
Yeah that's strange I always wondered about that because if you have to pay cash for a gift card they're honestly should really be no expiration date that you have to use it for. Some states is actually expiration days that's crazy. God bless 🙏👌☺️
