      There was a guy in Germany who did that in the 1920s. He had the cheapest meat in town and always plenty of it. He was killing and butchering homeless people for their meat. There were a lot of homeless in Germany in the 1920s. One lady took a piece to the police and told them she suspected it was human. The cops inspected it and then cooked and ate it. They thought it was pork, and told her it was pork. Then one time a homeless guy he hit over the head didn't lose consciousness and fought with him and escaped. He went to the police, but the police didn't believe him at first. Eventually the cops took the guy in for questioning with the intent on searching his house. He committed suicide in his cell before the cops searched his house. It's at that point the cops realized the people were right. Then they searched his house and they found parts of people.

      What I didnt quite understand though, was if the factory was no longer tunning, why were there workers there? Why did some see the caustic ash when he bought it? They said factory closed in Feb of 1897 and that he bought the ash in early 1897. Was that before or after the factory closed? Why did he bother employing a night watchman, (one that he can put to work to boot.) the one he had told to put the pot ash into the boiler room?That part wasn't really explained.

    About his gift of storytelling - if interested - (Sidenote: He used to tell prison guards his wife was haunting him even though he was innocent.) -- Adolph had a very terrifying gift - to convince people to believe the unbelievable. Sure, it didn't work on everyone - but the ones that fell under his spell also had their lives completely destroyed. His own lawyer had suffered so much so he ended up passing away completely broke - all alone - in a mental institution years later..... After dedicating his entire life to proving this man's innocence. His lawyer believed he was totally innocent and the wife was still alive...he gave up his own career and spent hundreds of dollars chasing this theory - which started simply from conversations he had with Adolph. It drove him mad - whilst also driving away his entire family.... Eventually he had to be committed - as i mentioned - where he died still proclamation the innocence of Adolph Luetgert right up until his final days.
    Adolph ruined many other lives as well... Clearly his wife and children - but many friends and business associates had been deeply effected by the man and most honestly wanted to believe he was in fact an innocent man...even with clear evidence - many had trouble accepting he could do something so heinus.
    That alone bothers me deeply as these same people had been witnesses to many arguments and fights as Adolph seemed to put little to no effort into hiding the fact that he was abusive to his wife. He made no effort to conceal the screaming and banging that was heard by all the neighbors over the months leading up to the crime. They had even noticed an increase in the frequency as well as the brutality before the murder as well......
    And yet... They speak of him almost as if he was a model husband and the thought he could murder her was so foreign to them. I can only explain this as his way of charming them into believing he was the good one and his wife was the instigator - the real abuser. Given her size.... No one with a sane mind could ever believe that story. She was incredibly short and very slender.... Compared to this beast - she could almost pass for another child in family photos.
    Even though he only murdered one - he remains one of the most chilling cases of that era - for me anyway - given the amount of people who believed the incredible nonsense he skewed. Even the jury had trouble with the case resulting in the first hung jury and many difficulties with the second. What seals the deal for me is the barrels he purchase and didn't need - that was clearly the largest piece of evidence as much of the rest could have been exaggerated or even fabricated.... Who knows. But that purchase just seals it for me. I just can't imagine anyone thinking his reasons where true - it was so disproven it left no doubt in my mind at all yet hundreds still believed he was telling the truth.
    It leads me to wonder - how many Adolph's have we had - or do have now - that are literally getting away with murder simply because they became experts at convincing others to believe the unbelievable.

      @amandaroman3471 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it's so long I rambled on too often. I did much research into this case and several more for a paper I did called Believing the Unbelievable
      Given the time span much is from other stories that can't be 100% proven or disproven so keep this in mind that it may not be totally accurate but you will still get the idea I'm trying to make either way. :) As far as I know though it's all true. X
