I feel her. My neighbors wants to know everything about me too because I'm introverted and I don't go out my house. I've noticed them trying to look inside my house. I don't like that, I feel unsafe when they do that and I suffer from severe major depression and anxiety...I don't know what they think of me, but I'll like them to imagine that I don't exist and leave me alone.

Rachel, I have the same problem. I moved from a good size home I had for 33 years to a very small condo.
I cherish my space and privacy and have always lived a peaceful, quiet life.
I thought that moving to a small 25 condo community, I would be ok. Unfortunately, i learned early on it's quite the opposite.
The coimmunity thinks I'm strange because I don't participate in activities, I don't talk to anyone. I don't share my personal life with anyone there. I keep to myself.
I work alot and I spend alot of my spare time gardening in my space on my days off.
      It's my sanctuary.
I had people there looking in my windows, ask me personal questions that are none of thier business..also alot of questions about why I don't go to the pool, why do I do this and not do that.
They have no boundaries and they find it strange that I don't communicate with anyone there.
It wasn't my choice to move to a condo setting. Can't get into details, but I've been miserable for 3 years.since moving there and looking forward to moving out as soon as I can, financially.
      Until then, I am stuck.
Just keep living the way you're living. Enjoy your life.
I've come to realize the less interaction I have with my neighbors and the "community" the happier I am. Don't let them or anyone else change who you are.
      Hope you are doing well.
🙂 It's been a long while since you posted.

It's always hard not to make assumptions on a person's mental health, especially when they have been dead for so long. But it's hard not to think that there was some truth in the gossip spread about her "strange behavior" being some kind of mental health issue. If she was funded by family, she probably did come from wealth. Even then, she was a rarity. Most people who suffered from any mental illness could have just as easily ended up in an institution for the rest of their lives. Phenomenal work as usual BC! Much love from the USA!

Even if the poor dear, had a good lawyer, and was found not guilty, I'm sure she would of been found guilty of something. It was really horrible time to be a single woman, without children and drank in a bar without an escort...Oh the scandal she caused.

*Plot twist* : Her wealthy father had murdered someone, so the family fled to hide out in a different state.
The "housekeeper" Henrietta lived with, was actually her Mother, and the "gardener" was her wealthy Father.
Henrietta displayed weird behaviour, so the townsfolk would always focus on her, therefore keeping attention away from her murderous father, hiding as her gardener.
Mr Flannigan (the shopkeeper across the road) had cottoned onto something somehow, and had to be murdered, because he was trying to extort money from Henrietta, in return for keeping the fact that the 3 of them were a family, from the police.
Henrietta wore the black veil in court so no one interstate recognized her (from her picture in the Newspaper) as the daughter of her wealthy father. Whose family had disappeared without a trace, after a local murder had occurred.

The damning facts, however, is the timing of her visit and her claim to have "found" sugar and already adding it to the glasses. Her lifestyle was definitely used to sensationalize and bolster these things.

It makes perfect sense that she was a member of a wealthy family, from which she was exiled for one reason or another. The governor's intervention seems to stand in favor this scenario. Who knows what she did to earn such a punishment, she was obviously an odd character, but a family of means would be able to provide her with the house and staff. It wouldn't be the first time a daughter or son had been 'put away' in such a manner. Interesting case, thanks again BC!! Stay safe :)

I think if we could have known what the backstory of Henrietta Robinson was we probably would have been able to solve or at least put together the puzzle of her life. She seems as though she had mental health issues but also personality issues, as well. I didn't understand how her maid didn't know more about her than she did because she was obviously in her presence alot. The fact that she kept to herself is a vital clue in that she didn't want anyone to know who she really was.

It sounds to me like something horrible was done to her when she was a child, and was probably done by a close family member! It would explain why she couldn’t trust people being around her, because if you can’t tfeel safe and trust a family member you can’t trust anyone! They most likely would’ve come to her at night to do their evil deeds, and she ran out in her sleep clothes trying to escape. After trying to drink the pain and memories away she would probably have terrible dreams and flashbacks, briefly revert back to the age she was hurt at. That would explain why she would be seen fleeing her house in her night gown, and why she was speaking like a child!

She's wary, has trust issues, has insomnia and sleepwalks, is mostly socially reclusive to avoid shame triggers and the draining effects of having to make small talk with strangers, and also feeling like you don't fit in with anyone else. She needed long-term trauma counselling and some antidepressants, poor woman. That's really interesting. I've had similar thoughts.
Harriet sounds like she has PTSD. The one person she feels comfortable with (apart from her gardener and maid) is Mr Lanagan. She buys her food and alcohol from him. She even sits in his bar and has a drink. She's invited for lunch with the Lanagans, and she returns later in the afternoon, but Mr L isn't well, and he tells her to go away. Mrs L seems strangely antagonistic towards Harriet, and said that Harriet had some paper in her hand at lunch, but it could have been anything.
      Mrs L didn't have a drink.
Harriet doesn't seem to have a motive for harming Mr L or Miss Lubee.
I think that she had found a friend, and was trying to have some social interaction.
PTSD is a very lonely thing to have, and a reclusive person doesn't let their guard down and spend time with others without a great deal of thought.
I don't see any reason for Harriet to poison anyone.
I suspect that people (Mrs L) were jealous of her beauty and independence. A vulnerable eccentric is an easy target.
What testimony did Harriet's staff give of her behaviour before and after the poisoning?
Was there arsenic at the Lanagan's house? Did they sell it downstairs in their shop? If so, how can they say that Harriet was responsible for the arsenic?
The 'found some sugar already' by the time Mrs L returned is strange and unclear. Where was it from? Where is the evidence of it? Miss Lubee was sitting at the lunch table while it was all done, what did she say before she died? Why didn't Mrs L ask Harriet "where did you get some sugar from?" and make her show her, afterall Harriet was a guest in her house.
Was there a film residue on the beer? Was it from soap residue? Does arsenic in beer leave a film?
There are too many unanswered questions. Not enough evidence. Where is Harriet's testimony? Her police statement of what happened?

I agree. Everyone just ran their mouths about what they thought they knew but had no first hand knowledge of. Even the poisoning; kinda strange it hits the husband and his sister in law, not anyone else, and who benefits? The wife who conveniently had to get back to work. I mean, if you think about it, having the town misfit sitting RIGHT THERE is an excellent chance to throw off suspicion and switch the blame to someone else. Someone who, by gossip and apparent fact, was wealthy and protected yet odd. Surely she wouldn't go down for the crime, but everyone would blame her for it.

cases like this really annoy me, why can't people keep to themselves? of course, this is in small town america, where even today, your business is everyone's business. trust me, it can get brutal in small towns. in the victorian era, and probably up to the 1920s, if you were different, in any way, especially a woman, you were going to be talked about. in the 1850s, for a woman to be her age, with her beauty and not married with children was looked at as *very* strange. i agree she probably was hiding from something, she possibly had children and a family somewhere, or she was sent away from a very rich household, on account of the way she was, and given a nice cottage, a sum of money every month, and a maid + gardener. she may have been slightly mentally ill, but not too noticeable, as she was still sociable, she just had a few obscure oddities, like sleepwalking for hours on end, and being on edge at all times. i dunno, it's just a shame, a lot of these older cases would never happen today, because of the extremely close-mindedness of society back then.

It still occurs in nice neighborhoods today. One couple will spread rumors about someone and it becomes the truth as people who don't know the person will spread the same story or embellish it that their children hear and also spread the same rubbish. It would be hilarious from hearing the falsehoods if wasn't so hateful which ruins an innocent person's reputation from someone who has never met the person and isn't likely to try and meet the person, who then becomes more isolated. Over the past 30+ years I have seen a neighborhood where people were friendly and helpful to their neighbors but as others move in, the dynamics have changed and people won't look at you or even raise their hand or nod to acknowledge your presence. One neighbor saw a fire truck and ambulance pass by to the end of our dead end road and wanted to know what I knew. Since we had already had an incident that involved a major police presence and a hazmat unit as well as a coroner at a different house several months before but wanted all the details to gossip about but wasn't offering help to the resident, I just don't participate in that situation. There's enough vicious rumors already that don't need to be added to. It is just as bad as a small town.

I was getting the witch from Hansel and Gretel vibes when he was talking about the cottage she lived in.

Clearly, there was some mental instability. Pulling out a gun on people who annoyed you in public is not something that would have been tolerated back then, and isn't nowadays either. How did she avoid going to jail? I think someone was greasing some palms. More likely, that of her victims to get them not to press charges. The servants and having her own place, with no means of income means she had either money, or again someone behind the scenes taking care of her expenses. I do think she killed. When she was arrested, her hidden benefactor may have decided she had gone too far. Perhaps choosing to no longer help her. Leaving her on her own.
