There's a scene where the Grinch pulls a tablecloth off a table comedy style, where all the stuff on it stays in the table, then the Grinch goes back and knocks everything off on purpose. This was actually improvised by Jim Carrey. The joke was supposed to be he pulls it off, and everything goes flying, but Jim kept doing it perfectly every time, he improvised going back and knocking everything off, and they kept it.
I fucking adored this movie as a kid. Jim Carrey was cool at playing the Grinch, he is so menacing yet it blended with Carrey's humor very well. The remade songs are good as well. I also liked the backstory of the Grinch, even if I understand that it padded out the story. The adult jokes, I also understand why its a bit too much but I at least don't mind them. Still, its a nice guilty pleasure for Christmas time. I hope that the Illumination version is good as this film, or at least a good film as its own.
20:40 I don't think Cindy Lou's been fooled. She's never shown to be stupid or naive, and she's known the Grinch long enough to recognize him. I think it's more that she's so given up on Christmas at this point that she decided not to stop the Grinch from stealing it.
I always love watching this every year. Almost every scene with Jim Carrey makes me laugh and laugh hard. And some of the things they did to pad out the time were cleverly done like making Cindy Lou a central character and giving backstory to the Grinch. Giving him a love interest seemed like a bit much though and admittedly, Dr. Seuss would probably not like some of the things that are seen in this movie (I'm looking at you, mistletoe butt and mayor kissing dog's butt). The resolution at the end is pretty rushed and it also gives the Grinch's realization a little less meaning. But despite that, I still love this movie. Both this and the animated version are classics.
Great review! Yeah, this movie I think has definitely aged well. I enjoyed it as a kid and I still enjoy it today and Jim Carrey was the best guy they could have chosen to portray The Grinch.
My personal favorite Jim Carrey movie, I used to be kind of afraid of the Grinch but that was mainly due to the advertisements. In addition to this, the makeup effects are perfect especially the ones they did for Carrey...and it was definitely worth it. Especially considering the process wasn't entirely pleasant for him (you can look it up on the trivia page on IMDB) and also they make me wish that Rick Baker (the Oscar-winning makeup artist who was responsible for the makeup in this) wasn't supposedly retiring.

I had this on VHS as a child but one time I saw it playing on TV during a Christmas party with a relative and saw the deleted scene with the Christmas Light contest. For years I was so confused it wasn't on my copy so I assumed I dreamt it.
I love the Grinch both the 1966 Animated Special by Chuck Jones and the movie starring Jim Carrey! by the way Anthony Hopkins aka Hannibal Lector is the narrator of this film!
This film is so nostalgic for me, my most vivid memory of this movie is watching it on Christmas morning with my brothers waiting for our parents to wake up. There are moments I love in this movie and moments I hate (mistletoe scene and the mayor and dog moment mostly) but it’s still one of my favourite Christmas films, and I watch it every year leading up to Christmas. Also I think I’m one of the few people who actually like the slightly muted colours in this film, it kind of gives that olden feel. But this is certainly better than the Cat in the Hat. Oh god the Cat in the Hat movie was awful. Only good thing in my opinion was the song played at the beginning of the credits.
When it comes to this movie people either love or hate it which is understandable. I really enjoy it but I can understand why people wouldn't considering how different it is from the original source material.
Some people forget that the Grinch adaptations are *completely separate* from the television special. 2000s Grinch is its own thing. 2018 Grinch is its own thing.
Cindy Lou's age ("who was no more than 2" in the original book & the Chuck Jones cartoon as opposed to being 6-8 in the 2000 & 2018 adaptations) AND the different origin stories of the 2000 & 2018 versions of The Grinch (being adopted by the two elderly Who sisters, getting bullied by the younger Agustus May-Who during his school years, and his budding romance with Martha Mae in the 2000 live-action version & being a lonely child orphan with nobody to love him, the addition of reindeer Fred & his family, and basically becoming a surrogate father to Cindy Lou & her younger twin brothers since their mother was single in the 2018 CGI version, meanwhile Cindy Who's only wish in the 2018 version was for her mother to be happy & have someone to share that happiness with) ARE definitive proof of that.
G'day mate, thanks for another great review merry christmas well sorta, if ya take requests I have one and its a film that makes so proud to be Australian its a film I watch every ANZAC Day and is very dear to my heart as it tells the story of chocos, volunteer ANZACs sent to Papua New Guinea to do menial tasks and they drove the Japanese away from a potential invasion of Australia. And that is why I want someone to do a review of this great film but many reviewers I know of aren't Aussie so finding the film in a country that is not Australia I can imagine is hard, but if you ever find this film I highly suggest you watch it merry christmas and a happy new year

That is a getting crap past the radar kind of joke: the "holiday party" there is a probably a Swingers/Key Party, hence why keys are going into that bowl. To quote Urban dictionary's entry on Key Parties: "A couples party where all of the men put their car keys into a bowl or bag and at the end of the party, the women blindly select a set of keys to determine who she goes home with for the rest of the evening for sexual gratification." Granted, you could be just messing with us when you made this or again, your mind is cleaner than originally thought, but this is definitely a getting crap past the radar/censors adult joke considering what type of party it was supposed to be. Thought I'd leave this for clarification.

The biggest problems of these Seuss movies are what they add to the stories to pad it out to feature length. They should make an ANTHOLOGY movie with several stories.
Most of the animated versions existed as anthologies (ex: the 3 Grinch cartoons were often lumped together, _The Sneetches_ , _The Zax_ , & _The Lorax_ were often put together, _Green Eggs and Ham_ & _The Cat in the Hat_ were often paired, likewise for _Fox in Socks_ & _Red Fish, Blue Fish_ , etc.) but were also released separately (examples beyond re-releases of the more common favorites include _The Butter Battle Book_ , _Daisy-Head Maisey_ , _Dr. Suess' ABC_ , etc.).
Also. I agree that it was the Mayor who ruined Christmas for the grinch. Which started when they were all kids then. N i like how Cindy lu who became the voice of reason in this. To all the whos and how she tried to talk and help the grinch to like Christmas again. N She did in the end. So like i said b4 a good adaptation of the Sues cartoon.But i still think the Mayor is a big jerk for what he did to the grinch. Both then N now. What a creep. N a meany. Technically, isn't it the same Whoville regardless? As in, the Whoville near which The Grinch resides (atop of Mount Crump-it) is the same Whoville found on that dust speck atop the flower Horton is carrying?
I'm a little upset because people want you to rent or buy the full movie hear's an idea, for the people who say rent or buy why don't you put yourself in the position of the people look forward every year to seeing full block buster movies home alone, how the Grinch stole Christmas twas the night before Christmas, why do we have to suffer? My point is Christmas movies should be free (all of them)
