Seriously, this is one of the best faux Disney movies ever made. I mean there wasn't that much competition, but this movie is really in the Great Tier. Although I think some of Dreamworks 2D movies from their competing with Disney era could be in the excellent tier.
Also due to Fox being acquired by Disney this means Fantasia gets to hang with her Disney cousins. I say cousins because anything by Don Bluth is technically a cousin of Disney.

The music slams, even if the animated movie not at all accurate. The play does tries to be more history accurate, even if it's still about one of the romanovs surviving what happened to them.

The necklace thing is just a theory of mine as it does reflect the real event because the Romanovs did sown in jewelry to hide it from their captors and it did deflect some of the bullets at first

i like to separate movies from the work they are based on. i mean, yes, all the horrible things that happened to Anastasia isn't worth making a movie about, but in the same vein as Pocahontas and how very loose the Disney movie is to the very uncomfortable true tale of the young girl of the same name: i can say that the movie is just a more fairytale take on the original story. i like both films not because of what history they are not going with but because of how good they are alone.

Or there could be a Jew who tells her about all the programs her father encouraged.
Full disclosure, I'm of Polish-Jewish heritage with ancestors who came to America at a time when Poland was under rule of the Tsars. While it's tragic what happened to the children, I'm not interested in mourning Nicholas II, or the Romanov dynasty. I remember being a kid, not knowing much about my background and only seeing this movie as pretty colors and one really nice song, and my sister and I were spending the night at my grandparents. We were allowed to bring a movie to watch, and I wanted to bring Anastasia, which we had borrowed from a friend. My mom informed me that my grandparents would probably not enjoy watching it. So I suggested An American Tial instead, which she said they would definitely like. I had no idea the two movies were made by the same person at the time. It's weird realizing that the dowager Empress from this movie is the wife of the Tsar driving out Fieval's family. Probably Spielberg's influence on AAT.
Long story short, this movie romanticizes the Romanovs, and it's just hard for me to get into a story that does that. One nice song (and the fact that I do like Sofie's design) doesn't make the rest worth it. I have to ask, WOULD we be better off culturally if more Disney-ripoffs glorified out-of-touch tyrants? I'm not sure people looking up the facts for themselves makes up for it. This will still be the first impression for a lot of kids, and its not as if making a movie that DIDN'T whitewash the Tsars wouldn't also serve as a historical gateway.

While yes, Marie is a family member, she was in fact not, at least by Russian standards, a Romanov. Marie Feordoronva was born in Denmark, to the royal house of Glückberg, and held the title Dagmar of Denmark until her marriage to Alexander III of Russia (Romanov). So, her being a foreigner makes more sense why Rasputin doesn’t go after her. Her family never betrayed him, but the romanov’s did.

Fun fact about Dowager Empress Marie. She actually constantly tried to warn her son and daughter-in-law against their many screw ups. Her own rule(alongside her husband obviously) is actually considered far better than that of her son's. So the beginning with Marie's narration about HER perspective of the past makes sense. She's talking about how things were at first. Granted I'm sure there's still some inaccuracies with it. But regardless Empress Marie is still remembered well as a ruler as far as I'm aware.

The reason Marie wasn't a target for Rasputin is obvious:
She's an old woman, ergo unable to have any more children. Anastasia is a young adult, she can still marry and have children. By killing her Rasputin is fulfilling the curse by bringing an end to the Romanov line forever.

I personally like this movie, I wouldn't consider it Don blue's best work because the writing is kind of weak, but it still offers some nice animation, some of the songs are okay, and likeable characters. Even it's direct to video sequel was entertaining, but that's probably because Don bluth actually came back to work on that one, unlike all of his other sequels that he had no real par in.

28:52-29:37 Please do not say this EVER again. The reason why they are almost similar to the originals is because is they fear on alienating their viewers on changing it so much to the point where it feels unrecognizable, (Hint-hint Godzilla 1998). Especially since most people in the general public probably don't take the time to look at the bonus features or read the books that they were based on. And how many times must I tell you people this, you can basically apply the same to describe every movie as a cash-grab, not just the remakes or sequels? And doesn't empty more describe people who don't like these films because they think the originals don't need to be remade because of the "If it's not broke don't fix it" excuse, and sometimes feel inconsiderate to the people who want to see these remade.
