    “I bet you're wondering what I would do to make it any stronger. Well... maybe you could shorten it, by an hour or two, and maybe some bright colors for a friendlier view, A more subtle actor might be anticipated, and hey, you know what else? Why not make it animated? Yes, those are the changes that I would insist. Oh, wait, we don't need to. IT F**KING EXISTS!”

    Let’s just say, the Chuck Jones animated short was faithful to the story.

    • @Fictionboy16
      @Fictionboy16 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While I do agree to that, you do realize the reason it's the most faithful is because it's a short, right? When adapting a story that can be read in five minutes to a movie, it's almost, if not, definitely guaranteed that there will be additional content, AKA, filler, to meet the minimum amount of time for the piece of media to qualify as a movie (usually at least an hour).

  • @ajmohawk2993
    @ajmohawk2993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I did love the backstory between Grinch and Martha, and they did a good job with those sections in the additional content, considering that the writers of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (one of my favorite movies) wrote this movie.

    Ron Howard did one day of shooting in the makeup and costume just to help Carrey cope, Carrey mistook him for a stunt double who looked nothing like him. Also you may notice that in most of the shots that Carrey's eyes were done with special effects contacts, apart from a few shots towards the end where they are digitial because Carrey felt a great deal of discomfort wearing the contacts (which isn't rare considering some people do have problems wearing contact lenses which aren't at all pleasant to try and I can understand that someone who has a phobia of 'things in your eyes' would have problems with it).

    I too enjoyed this movie as a child, but also like you, to sum up what you said in the beginning, "it didn't really age that well," I'll say that. This is still my favorite live-action Dr. Seuss film adaptation, and can see why there are a few people who says it's their favorite Seuss film adaptation overall. Jim Carrey is definitely the best actor for the Grinch, and Cindy is sweet, those are pros, and the cons are the unlikable Mayor as well as, yes, the filler to turn a short story into a feature film, like the plot to steal Christmas being at the final act rather than somewhere in the middle. Merry belated Christmas, and see you in 2021 in less than two days!

    @ajmohawk2993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2:13-4:16 = I agree with you on the middle act completely, Jambareeqi. Great valid points you made for this movie.
    I’ll be honest, while I did enjoy Jim Carrey’s fun performance as the Grinch (and Rick Baker’s makeup for him), Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who, as well as the beginning and ending parts of the movie (particularly the heist), and I always love James Horner’s musical score (May he Rest In Peace), I didn’t like the middle act of the film at all.
    Like you said, the middle act with the Grinch being humiliated in Whoville again was rubbing salt on the wound, and it’s really too much. To me, that whole sequence was pushing the motivation too much when it was already there to begin with. I also felt like some areas of the film felt filler.
    Don’t get me wrong, I love the ending with its heartwarming message about the true meaning of Christmas, Christine Baranski’s fine performance as Martha in this movie, the heist itself was fun, and the bond between Grinch and Cindy Lou is very strong and sweet, but this movie tried way too hard to squeeze more content in it, and it just didn’t work as I thought it would. I really wanted to like this movie, but the overlong middle act makes me think otherwise. And I feel sorry for the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who to have suffered through that.
    Great review on this movie, Jambareeqi. You managed to bring up a lot of valid points with this movie, and I hope you have a great and Happy New Year! 🎆🎊🎈

    I agree with you about this movie. I watched it a lot as a kid as well, but the older I got, the less I liked it. I’m kind of surprised if that it has become such a strong holiday classic for so many others, but I guess it’s kind of similar to how Home Alone 2 did; it’s kind of like a quintessential holiday guilty pleasure.
    (Haven’t seen the 2018 Illumination one, but I don’t have very high expectations if I’m ever in a situation where I have to sit down and watch it with a kid; but as mediocre as that one is, I’d certainly much rather expose my kids to that, than the crudeness and mean-spiritedness of this one.)
    Really though, nothing can ever top the original book or the 1966 Chuck Jones TV special! If you want an example of Dr. Seuss brought into live-action EFFECTIVELY, watch ‘Seussical the Musical’. If you want a consumable Seuss adaptation that takes the liberties needed to extend a story that was originally written for just a few pages (and have the end result justify it, WITHOUT just resorting to so much filler), watch Netflix’s ‘Green Eggs and Ham’.
    Anyways, see you in 2021, Jam!

    As someone who is literally the same age as the film, personally I think the film while flawed I will say out of all the theatrical Dr. Seuss adaptations this is one of the few that actually tries to stick close the book. The other one being Horton Hears a Who (which also stars Jim carrey as the title character). Yeah sure both movies had to stretch things but that kinda was something to be expected. Did both succed at it? No but they did handle it alot better than The Cat in the Hat and The lorax along with the 2018 Animated grinch movie. I will say there is one Dr. Seuss adaptation that actually did manage to do this right and that is the 2019 Animated netflix series Green Eggs and Ham. Some might be wondering how well part of that is really simple they treated as if the two main characters were taking a road trip and since show is tv series they have a bit more freedom.

    I do agree with some points you made about the film. I’m not a huge fan of Jim Carrey and he can be a little over the top in some scenes, but I feel like you couldn’t have gotten anyone better to play the Grinch. The biggest gripe I have with it is the mayor. The mean spirited attitude given towards the Grinch is not only just another way to get a jump on him, but it clearly shows how the citizens of Whoville are completely brainwashed and just go with the flow.
    But I do have to admit, while I think this movie is not entirely perfect, I needed to watch it more than ever this holiday. All throughout December, I was in such a state of depression that I just couldn’t get into the Christmas spirit, leading me to having one horrific night sleep. It almost felt like I was having an anxiety attack on top of a heart attack. And I just felt like I would be alone since hardly anyone talked about Christmas this year, no one was in the mood bc of COVID, and I kept feeling more sad. Then, seeing how Cindy and the Grinch both had their struggles hit somewhat close to home, I had to really look deep into both of their meanings and it actually helped me cope a little with how I felt this year. Turns out, I had a fantastic Christmas at the end of the day :) Again, while it’s not perfect, I do still have a soft spot for it. Loved the review and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for 2021! Cheerio Jam! ;)

      @@jswatch9270 What the heck is wrong with you?!?! Everything you just said is not only completely wrong, but I think I lost some brain cells from reading what you wrote because of how stupid it is.
      First off, Jim Carrey did a poor job as The Grinch. I hate it and it's my least favorite performance of his! Instead of being a cruel, intimidating, and heartless character who relishes how mean he is and has NO SENSE OF HUMOR, which makes the character of The Grinch a more evil and intimidating character, he's a loud, annoying, and unfunny character who's more of a comedic grump than a cruel and intimidating creature who relishes his meanness. Heck, he even ruins the scene where The Grinch's heart grows, WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE A HEARTFELT PART OF THE STORY AND JIM CARREY TURNED IT INTO AN UNFUNNY JOKE!!! Overall, he was bad and was the WORST performance in that movie.
      Second, the live-action adaptation is NOT the best adaptation of the source material. The 1966 cartoon is VERY clearly the BEST adaptation of the source material. That adaptation is not only fantastic, but it's charming, heartfelt, and can be funny due to the animation. The live-action adaptation is not only awful, but it's ugly/ugly-looking, mean-spirited, charmless, unfunny, cringey, off-putting, and has no heart to it. It sucks and you, and anyone else who likes it or *mistakes* it as good, should be ashamed of yourself!

      Jim Carrey did an awesome job as The Grinch and it's one of my favorite performances from him and you must know that Jim Carrey is like a living cartoon and he has a great amount of energy to play the character which is why I said that he stole the show as The Grinch.
      I enjoy both the 1966 animated special and the 2000 live action movie, you're going to have to think again because I say the the cat in the hat starring Mike Myers is the absolute worst live action movie adaptation of a Dr. Suess book.

      @@jswatch9270 You're still not getting what I'm saying! How the Grinch Stole Christmas is NOT a great movie. I know Jim Carrey is an actor generally known for being comedic and goofy, but that doesn't mean he could've done something different when it comes to playing The Grinch. I mean, before this blunder came out, he was in The Truman Show and that movie showed that he could do something that isn't super goofy. So there is NO EXCUSE FOR HIS PERFORMANCE AND HOW CARTOONY HE IS!!! I'm not saying that How the Grinch Stole Christmas is worse than The Cat in the Hat, but their both bad movies. Besides that, I honestly hate The Grinch (2000) more than The Cat in the Hat because at least not so many people are stupid and like The Cat in the Hat, as well as mistake that movie for good, whereas people do that for The Grinch (2000) and it pisses me off so much. Also, the live-action Grinch just pisses me off WAY more than the live-action Cat in the Hat. You're still wrong for liking it and calling it good when it ISN'T.

I also didn’t like the makeup it was creepy. I feel the reason why this is why Dr.Seuss movies shouldn’t be live action films. Also I agree the second half is mean spirited and sad. We’re watching this guy go through his abuse all over again and we don’t need extra reason why the Grinch gets the idea to steal Christmas.
