    It looks like it’s way way easy left meter as is then fix these strings. But any way very interesting mechanical system. I wish we can ask engineers how they come up with such design.

    Currently troubleshooting my OM-1 light meter.. So I quite happily watched this whole thing to get a better understanding of the camera's insides.
    Appreciate you even just taking the time to record it all in HD.

      Hello Liam
      I looked over your text and pictures in the email you sent, and I can't find anything you did wrong. The steps you took were the same things I would have done. I am a commercial camera repairman, and I would not spend more time trying to repair such a camera. Time is money to me, and I would probably replace the meter or return the camera to the customer. If you want to play with the camera, you could take the meter apart, but I don't think it would help fix it. If it were me, I would probably buy a non-working junker OM-1 and try swapping out parts, such as the meter or switch. Or I would buy a junker and try to fix it instead. There is more than one path to fixing a camera. Sometimes you much consider buying a second junker and try fixing it or using the parts to fix the first camera. This is what I often do. Learning how the camera works and having fun doing it is the goal. Camera service, or DIY, is supposed to be a hobby. A fun hobby. To me it sounds like a bad meter that needs to be replaced, but it's impossible for me to know with out having the camera on my desk to test. Best of luck. Sorry I could not help more.

      Thank you. Any camera can be repaired. It counts on if you think it's worth the cost. Many fathers send me their old SLR film cameras to have them restored so they can pass them on to their children. Many Vietnam vets send me their old SLR film cameras they purchased when in the service. Anyway, no camera is past saving unless it's worn and rusty.

    Hey, does anyone know how i can pop the latch to open the back of the OM2 without the film winder?

    • @FilmCamera_Vlog
      @FilmCamera_Vlog  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello JS
      If the winder head is off, but the shaft is still in place, you need to find a tool and pull up on the winder shaft. That will release the film door. But, if the shaft is missing or had been pushed down into the camera, you need to make a hooked tool and pull up on a tab located in the hole where the shaft was located. You may need a flashlight to see the tab because it can be hard to see if you don't know where it is. Normally, the rewind shaft pulls up on this tab if it is in place. The only other solution is to buy a non working OM2 on eBay, open the back, remove the leather over the latch slide and see how it is put together so you can understand how to take the latch apart on the locked up camera. You can always force the back off, but you will damage the latch and latch slide.
      This is the best I can describe how to fix your problem without seeing it myself. Good Luck.

    Somewhere there is a shutter speed ring ball bearing that clicks when you change speeds. Mine was broken. The string system was a pain to re align when the lense mount was off. Yes it was hours to reassemble.

    • @FilmCamera_Vlog
      @FilmCamera_Vlog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello danc
      That ball bearing can get lost real easy. I always put it somewhere safe in a tray so I will not lose it. You should always put a little grease on it when reassembling it so the speed ring will turn easier when changing speeds. Yes, the string system on this camera is a pain to reassemble even for me.

    Does your overhaul include modification to run the meter circuit on a silver oxide battery instead of mercury? I believe a small diode is typically added to drop the voltage from 1.55V (silver oxide) to 1.35V (mercury). Thanks.

    • @Mark-mj2ge
      @Mark-mj2ge 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Or maybe you can calibrate the OM-1 for the newer batteries without the need for a diode?

    • @FilmCamera_Vlog
      @FilmCamera_Vlog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mark-mj2ge
      Normally, I use the meter adjustment to set the OM-1 for whatever battery the customers want. Many customers send a battery with their camera and tell me to adjust the camera for the battery. I don't add diodes to cameras. I just use the camera's adjustments. The Canon F-1 meter is the only camera I ever worked on that needed a diode. Amazon sells different voltage button batteries for these older cameras, and battery holder converters. I never liked the idea of modifying a camera meter circuit, since I didn't feel it was necessary.

    This video was AWESOME!
    Small question. The lightmeter on my OM-1 recently started being erratic. It moves appropriately when turning shutterspeed/aperture, but it has suddenly started responding weirdly to light. When it's on, it will flicker up and down even when light is perfectly stable. Not always even responding to changes in light.... It's like it's seeing it's own world.
    Does this ring a bell for you? Where should I look first?
    I'm in Europe, so I'm not gonna send it overseas, but I'm pretty handy so I might attempt a fix myself.
    Thanks. I love your channel!!

      Yeah. Alright I will definitely try that. Thank you for taking the time to reply :) I'll also write if I manage to fix it.
      I also have an OM-4 that constantly wants to underexpose by 3 stops... I'm guessing that's more complicated 😂

  • @Meerchen2000

    Super helpful. I had an OM-1 whose needle was stuck at the bottom and not responding to changes in aperture/shutter speed. I followed your steps to 23:23 and was able to tension the string such that the needle became centered and free enough to bounce with movement of the camera. Do you have any advice on calibrating the needle to the correct native position for a given shutter speed? Say, for example, 1/1000.

    • @FilmCamera_Vlog
      @FilmCamera_Vlog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Meerchen
      I have exposure and shutter testers in my shop, but they are expensive to purchase. Plus, you need to know some information to correctly use them to calibrate the camera. I don't think I can help you with this problem. The only thing I can suggest is to use your camera's ASA adjustment and run tests by taking photos of the same scene at different ASA settings. Thisis what I would do if I had no test equipment. You could also buy a used hand held meter from eBay and use it. You could even compare the readings of the hand held meter with your camera's meter and figure out the correction factor between them. I hope this helps.

    Love the videos! I also bought an OM-1 back in the 70's because of the small size and light weight and the lenses that went with it. It was my first ILC and I have used Olympus cameras since. I have started doing minor repairs to (personal) cameras and lenses. Recently I picked up another OM-1md . The shutter and mirror operate properly from 1/30 to 1/1000, but from 1/15 to 1 second the mirror hangs up and needs to be returned by removing the lens and using the lever on the right side of the lever box (as you look at it). Do you think this will solve itself through using the camera, or is there a simple fix for this (somewhat minor) problem? Again, great videos! (they can help keep us out of trouble).

    • @FilmCamera_Vlog
      @FilmCamera_Vlog  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never encountered that problem with an OM-1. If I were working on it, I would probably tear it down, clean it, oil the shutter shafts, and reassemble it and test it after adjusting the curtain times. Often when I go into a camera I have no idea what is causing the problem, but I find it during a normal CLA because I'm checking to make sure all the parts are working properly.
      Or to put it another way, if I know what is causing the problem, I go straight to it, but if not, I take the camera completely apart and check all parts.
      I've been working on the OM-1 cameras since they were new and I know what goes wrong with thim over time, but when an OM-1 has a problem I have never encoundered before appears, I often suspect that someone has been inside the camera and damaged it while trying ot fix it. In a case like this, I have to check all parts inside a camera.

      @@FilmCamera_Vlog Thank you for the reply. I am still in the "Minor Repairs" stage of camera repair (cleaning lenses, freeing up stuck parts, etc.) so at this time I will probably leave things as is (the slow shutter speeds don't get used that often) . I really enjoy your videos and think they will contribute to the survival of many of the fine old under appreciated film cameras that otherwise would go to the landfill. Thanks again !

      Thanks. I did not realize there was so much interest in the Olympus OM-1 when I made the video. Most of my videos don't get many views. The DIY film crowd is smaller than I thought it would be when I started my channel. The photographic channels on TH-cam that get the highest subs, are the ones that just review film cameras, or explain how they operate, or explain how to photograph landscapes, etc. There is not much interest in DIY, which can be a dry and boring subject, except for a few photographers.

    Very interesting and useful video, it was important for me to understand the aperture mechanism. I have an OM-1 MD and the issue is: whenever I change the aperture on the lens (While its mounted on a camera) theres a lot of tension while going down (from F16 to F1.8), it still works and fires correctly I believe.. Wondering why it could be stiff

    • @FilmCamera_Vlog
      @FilmCamera_Vlog  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I were working on the camera I would check the lens (off the camera) f-stop first. If it was okay, I would next check the bottom plastic geared ring that engages the lens by pushing it clockwise with my finger tip to see how hard it was to move. If it was hard to move, it could be several things restricting the plastic ring. Then it gets into a repair situation that has to be fixed in a repair shop.

    That was a really good breakdown of the OM1, I always get nervous with string setups like that - the first camera I ever serviced was an SRT-101 and that string setup is something special.
    I'm no professional, but I know my way around the ones I know. Haven't done an OM1 yet but I've got a personal one of mine here that's not kicking the mirror back down after completing the shutter cycle so this has helped me visualize how to avoid disengaging the string. I'm glad they kept it all on the mirror box rather than looping into the body as well.
