    interesting fact is that it between Rome in around 100 AD and London in the late 1890s, no other city managed to obtain 1 million residents

      Alexandria was the first city to ever achieve a population of 1 million, 100 years before Rome.

      Not true at all. Luoyang, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou all reached above a population of 1 million during that timespan. And Xi’an likely had that number even before Rome.

      Not to mention that most of it is built with immigrant laborers who live in poverty and are poorly treated with few legal protections, that it has laws that most first world countries would hate (such as if a women is at a hotel and a co-worker or staff assaults you, there is a decent chance the woman reporting will end up in jail for “enticing it” or just for having sex outside of marriage, which has happened), or many stories of corrupt business deals that take advantage of the Dubai’s law favoring citizens over non-citizens, no matter how clear the citizen is at fault (see 60 minute story of some poor UK professional who took a job there and ended up in jail having done nothing), and that although they could put the money into timeless infrastructure but instead spend it on gimmicks that won’t age well, with the veneer of wealth (the Burj doesn’t even have enough bathrooms with actual plumbing, and has to drain septic tanks each week).

    It's incredible just how much cities expand over many years. Just seeing old photos of my smaller city compared to now shocks me, which is why I don't understand why we still have such poor communities in 3rd world countries. With all this money, I wish the people in those places could be helped more

    • @hendrikwilfriedlaporte5755
      @hendrikwilfriedlaporte5755 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because those places have nothing to offer so they aren't worth developing for the big developers. Also the reason why Rio de janeiro might be 'spectacular' but is actually rotten from inside: the city isn't developing better houses for their population; they're demolishing the favelas to put modern houses in their place that none of the poor people living in the favelas can pay for, literally reducing them to illegal homeless in their own city!!

    Just as an FYI, the silly names given to the newer buildings in London aren't actually official. The British are notorious for giving nicknames to people and things. If a person is given one, it's usually because they're really popular among their friends (though if you're a horrible person, you'll probably get a rather vicious nickname with no humour in it). Many buildings around the country have had nicknames for centuries! So any odd-looking new building anywhere in the country is basically asking for one 😂
