34 years ago My first home was a $1000 mobile home. We parked it for free on my parents property. Part of the floor had to be replaced. Had no heat or air. Had to use space heaters. The toilet and tub was falling through the floor and had to be fixed. The carpet had to be ripped out. It stunk. Bought cheap rugs to walk on. Had so many blankets on the bed I could not move. The washing machine was rusted on the bottom and walked across the room everytime it was on. Had an old plastic couch that came with it and a coffee table. Had no other furniture. It was rough. Lived in it for a year. If I could go back I would not change a thing. It helped make me who I am. Made me appreciate everything I have. 👍🏼

I remember when I was living on my own at 19 years old, I lived in a washroom that I rented. Once I was so hungry and I had no food in the house that I started eating a jar of Tums antacids that were sweet. This were hard times let me tell you. But I made it out of there and now have my own home and family. Patience is a virtue 🙏

Same here. I thought I was poor and then I took a train ride through the country. America has a lot of shit holes but traveling on the Texas/Mexico border was LITTERED with extreme poverty. People were living next door to oil refineries in the US but in Mexico, everyone was living in huts without water, electricity or roads. I never felt poor again.

I'm so sad I had a great landlord and loved the place but the condo board kicked us out cuz we had an iguana and a really old bearded dragon, they were never out the cages ( yes we had an adequate cage for our iggies size at the time) they claimed they were snakes and we're gonna get in the plumbing and ruin the building.... Sigh... We also got numerous complaints cuz our patio furniture had some fun colors and they took pictures thinking they were Christmas lights.... Even showed one chick it the cushions and still got notices... Never living with an HOA or condo board ever again!!!

I live in an old house with no central air, no appliances, basement that floods in the summer, and the main street is unpaved next to main street in my town. I had to buy my own appliances too.
People say I got ripped off but the cheapest place in town costs 1500 for a studio apartment.
I pay 375... And it is 2 bedrooms, full bathroom, large yard, and I am allowed to have up to 3 dogs or cats no extra charge. I'll deal with the annoyances for those reasons. 😆

If so then it can be listed as a full bathroom. My cousin has a toilet and sink in one room then a shower downstairs because our town has old buildings. I mean before the town had plumbing old.
That means showers and tubs were in basements near the water pumps. Toilets were outhouses.

Gaaah! This reminds me of trying to find an apartment near the University of Washington in Seattle. The apartment advertised was an upstairs bedroom closed off from the rest of the house by a screen door ONLY and the kitchen was an electric frying pan. I don't remember anything else since that was when I saw her kids were hanging off the screen, staring at everything we were doing -- and left.

My first "apartment " was just off pioneer and advertised a view of the the water ha! My only view was literally a brick wall if I stuck my head out and really stretched and squinted you could maybe make out a little blue of the sound. It was called a studio and basically was a room the size of a large closet with a half bathroom the size of a broom closet. The kitchen was just part of the room sectioned off by a counter top and had little more than room for a mini fridge and microwave. My rent was nearly 1200! This was back in 2003 and that would be a welcome price these days. Now everyone living in western Washington unfortunate enough to rent is looking at that price minimum and I'm talking for the suburbs, federal way, Renton, Tacoma. Don't even get me started on how much rent will run you inside the city limits.

@@3frenchhens818 tell me about it before COVID Walmarts, for example were almost all 24 hours now 11 is as late as you'll find one open. Now I don't know if COVID is the only reason for this or if the timing is just coincidental, or a bit of both but it doesn't seem like they have any future plans of going back to their old hours which for someone like me is very disappointing, I'm a night person always have been and I'm much more comfortable being in smaller crowds. And besides casinos gas stations and WinCo nowhere else around here is 24 hours. Your right it is a bit strange for such large, heavily populated cities to collectively turn their lights off after dark similar to the way a small town middle of the country type place where the population is less than an eighth of one of these cities where it makes sense to shut down since no one is out after a certain time but here your talking tens of thousands of people work nights or just are out or up at night and I think the end result will sadly be that a lot more people are going to become gamblers because that's the only place anyone can go any time and that undoubtedly will lead to so many addictions and all that comes with it. I have first hand experience with this as my mom has since my step father passed away 4 years ago , she has slowly begun to gamble more and more to where she used to go maybe twice a year is now stopping in 3 to 4 days a week, this started for her purely out of boredom. and it right now has me wondering just how many others there possibly could be who are falling into the same trap. Anyways A bit long winded of me I know. Have a good night and take care

One time some squatters got into one apartment and on the tiny balcony was a tiny storage closet.
They had jammed it locked. It smelled so bad.
We stalled opening it cause I seriously was scared there would be a dead body in there. ....but we had to remove the entire door. . So these squatters had made themselves a make shift outhouse.
It was a bucket of..... Like I mean.... Then there was the unit where we were doing a run through of a recently vacated apartment. And the entire bathroom sink was gone.

I lived in Japan. Yes, Tokyo is notorious for cramp spaces, & Shinjuku arguably has more cheaper rooms/apartments to rent compared to other parts of Tokyo. To have that kind of Shinjuku room at ¥99 is worth it (usual charges = USD470/monthly & above)...but I know there's a catch. Upfront costs such as security deposit + brokerage with landlord fees + guarantor fees (for non-Japanese residents), etc. before moving in must be worth a fortune. In total, I won't be surprised the total price you pay for that "IKEA fully-furnished room" rent + deposit is ~USD800/monthly still.

Finally, someone called out the fact that he forgot to add those “coffin homes” in this video. I’ve seen multiple images in google and watched a handful of short documentary videos about those tiny apartments in hong kong.
Many people live in metal cage stacked in top of each other and some live in wooden compartments in walls. There are others living in tiny subdivided flats made illegally from large rooms, which only fit a bunk bed and a small table; they also share a small kitchen and a toilet (sometimes two toilets). What’s worse is that these apartments are rather expensive for their size, like a couple hundred dollars per month in those small apartments. Probably worse than those in new york
I’m not a hong kong resident but I just know this from the media I watch or read.

I don’t understand the diss on IKEA. I’ve had IKEA furniture since I was 6 years old, back in the 80’s. The price is great, it’s easy as hell to put together, it lasts ages and if it breaks they replace it or refund it. And the best part is that it is modular and you can create your own combination to suit what you need when you need it.
I can even go and buy new doors or whatever to add on to pieces I bought 10 years ago.
A few times we have thought to go “high end” and get much more expensive furniture from other stores. None of it lasts as long as IKEA with such great warranties.
Now I don’t even bother and I just go straight to IKEA. And I get a good laugh at a friend who paid $5000 for a bookcase that broke in 3 years (warranty only covered manufacturers defects), while all my wood furniture cost less than half that and is more than 10 years old.

Places like the 'tree house' are not too common here in the UK but they do exist. And as for 8 people 'choosing' to live there, the state of the UK's housing at the moment, not to mention the price, doesn't give people the choice to live in these hell holes. It's a choice between being on the street or having a roof over your head, even in these dire conditions. This country and government allows it so the longer it will continue. Sad but very true.

My husband and I rented a 10' x 12' sleeping room with a 5' x 10' walk-in closet that doubled as a kitchen. The room came furnished with a double bed and a dresser, and a second dresser in the closet, which doubled as a kitchen counter, and held our cooking appliances food and dishes. We brought our own wing-back chair (where I sleep) and a cooler that doubled as both a fridge and a footstool. That was in early 2008 and cost us $65 a week. All 5 upstairs sleeping rooms shared the same bathroom. We lived there for about 4 months until the guys across the hall moved out of the large room.
We then switched rooms to the large room for $75 a week. It was 12' x 16' and had a non-functional fireplace. Unfortunately it ALSO had a much smaller 2' x 4' closet. This room had a twin bed (which made it seem much larger), 2 dressers (again one was our kitchen), a computer desk, my wing-back chair, and my cooler/footstool. Our cooking facilities consisted of a George Foreman grill, a toaster, a crockpot, and a drip coffee maker. We lived THERE for 2 years, until I finely got my SSI after I had open-heart surgery.

I lived in the infamous "Machete Murder House" in Fort Smith, Arkansas with my kids in 2014. The murder took place almost exactly a year before in moved in, and I wasn't notified by my landlord about what happened there before I signed the lease. It was a disgusting, roach filled stink pot, and while I was cleaning it the days after I signed the lease (and before I moved my kids in), the neighbor across the street came over and said, "So, did the owner tell you what happened here last year?" Nope, he sure didn't. Not until the next day, of course. He came over to install a fridge (which was filled with maggot stink that I was never able to remove), and said, "So, I probably should have mentioned to you the other day..." I said, "Yeah, I know now. The neighbor across the street told me."
Since I was newly divorced and had little income at the time, my choices were slim. Otherwise, I would have moved immediately...especially after the evening when my kids and I got home for the day, and there was a news crew outside my front door, taping an update on the trial as my kids and I walked in the front door.
Needless to say, we survived, and are all living comfortably in our own home in a different city and state. But, my kids and I will always appreciate what we have, now, having gone through that dreadful 6 months.

Decades ago in this country the US government made it against the law for apartments to charge large amounts of money for rent. When my ex-husband and I got married we found an apartment for about $350.00 a month and that included all bills. The apartments are no longer there because the owners of the apartments decided to sell it. We need the government to step in and make the landlords lower the rent, and to keep the apartments fixed up. Rent control and really, really decent apartments, and even homes shouldn't be allowed to have crappy places to live in. I know if I owned apartments or homes, I wouldn't be charging outrageous rent, and I would have them fixed up.

I know what it is to live in a rental place, I spent my childhood living there, and there are 2 sides to this story, at the good side, the place gave me beautiful memories, the house was spacious, and we even had a swing in our living room, but on the bad side, we had no privacy, there were like 2 spiders per bathroom, insects everywhere, one time I picked up a worm accidentally and I never slept right from that day onwards....
Tbf, The house was not bad, but it was also not perfect.
I had not visited the house since I moved out, so I really wanna go there....

There are a couple things that most people clearly do not know. At least, in America, there are laws protecting tenants from all sorts of things, from massive rent hikes to uninhabitable living to eviction without cause. But if tenants do not report their landlords to the state's Public Housing Authority, the landlords will just go on doing what they're doing, mostly taking advantage of tenants' ignorance. In fact, counting on it. As an authority figure, most people assume landlords are always right. WRONG! In fact, many corporations have been "investing" in rental properties without the least idea of what being a landlord means. They think they can do as they please-- They cannot. Not without risking heavy fines and severe penalties.
Tenants have rights. The specific laws and Public Housing Authorities (PHA) vary by state. Generally PHA is the branch of government that helps people stand up to their landlords. But do a search for "tenant's rights for 'my state' " and, once you scroll passed all the ads, you'll find state agencies to help you and a list of laws and responsibilities for both tenants AND landlords. (Look for a ".gov" suffix on the URL; then you know it is actually a government site.) Landlords may not care, but most states do NOT want people going homeless, or suffering at the hands of a slum lord.

My first place when I left home was a caravan. In Winter the pipes froze so for quick water in the morning, I kept some in the fridge 😂 The curtains would freeze to the windows but would have unthawed by the time I got back from work and my landlords idea of the annual service for the gas heater was to blast it with a hoover! The door wasn't very secure so I blocked it nightly with the chest of drawers but it was my home. And then the landlords cat, Motherfuss moved in with me and she made it perfect ❤️

I'm on Section 42 housing, rent is based on income. There are 3 other properties owned by the same real estate company. The first on I looked at was so small I'd have barely been able to put my desk in. They offered to build me a Murfey bed. The perks were a washer/dryer in the full-sized bath, and full-size appliances. On my income it would have cost about $400 a month. I said no.
The one I'm in now is over 600 square feet, separate bedroom, and all the perks of the mini. I moved in for $388 a month. It's very well maintained, with a secure garage and a secure building. I had to wait 4 years to get it, calling faithfully every month to make sure they knew I was very interested.
A lot of these places on this list should be shut down by the cities they're in. Serious health hazards that are actually illegal in most places.

A number of years ago while I was looking at houses there was a shocker that had all kinds of issues. There was a cord dangling dangerously low across the hallway and a couple of other dodgy things. I got the call from the Real Estate mob telling me I was the successful applicant. When I asked what they were going to do about the dangerous stuff, I got the response of "what's the problem". I kept saying the stuff was unsafe and needed to be fixed but she didn't see any issue. In the end it got quite heated and she literally screamed at me "DO YOU WANT IT OR NOT" to which I screamed back "NO!" and slammed the phone down. I thought if they were going to ignore such problems prior to moving in then as landlords they'd be pure hell. No thanks!!! Wound up renting a nice place that I'm still at years later with a nice landlord.

Don't even talk about those big rats those were there and they laid kids in our bags kept in a shelf near roof

My friend Jim and I rented a small house on a handshake and the landlord's promise that the kitchen floor would be replaced by time we moved in. A month later, we were given the key. We walked in to find no kitchen floor. I mean, NO kitchen floor. The subfloor had been torn out in the middle. Bare earth. So you'd walk down the hall and the doorway had a milk crate we could step on to "go down a level". The cabinets still had floor under them. The appliances were on the ground. We had to move the milk crate to access it all, and we put the electric stove and fridge in the living room. We were punk back then. "fuck it." I dragged in potting soil and we planted some tomatoes and herbs under the window. Meanwhile, the landlord had gone to prison so we couldn't get our damn money back. We finally went to the city to complain. They condemned the structure, so now we had no money and were out on the street. "Fuck it." We worked at the same yuppie coffee house so, once the doors were locked for the night, we'd go into the cellar and sleep. It had a shower area. That's one thing about the 80s that I don't miss.
