I was in the army and spent 18 months in S. Korea and the border of N. Korea. One of the big things (for us at least) was the yellow dust and pollution that would drift over from China. Sometimes we weren’t allowed outside because the air was so dangerous.
When I was on the DMZ I somehow managed to get a picture (I always had a camera with a good zoom on me) of a N. Korean soldier. When you zoomed in you could see that his uniform was way too big for him and he was extremely malnourished. You could also see huge calluses on his knuckles.
Wow that is just horribly sad..I seriously don’t get how they don’t see right through the brainwashing because there country is so bad that I feel like the whole entire country would kill kim jong un
Thank you for your service on the frontline of freedom brother. I’m a former Paratrooper 11B2P, I was stationed in Panama for 2 years, then 82nd, Grenada, ETS. In 90 volunteered out of the IRR for Desert Storm. I found that young Marines comment very moving.

They are taught from a very young age, that North Korea is THE shining beacon of wealth and beauty of the entire planet. And that the rest of the world envies THEM! It's all about brainwashing.

A North Korean man who defected now lives in the US had trouble finding a job but wanted to save money so he only ate potatoes for three months straight. That's how accustomed he was at eating ONLY potatoes for long periods. It was so natural for him that he had no trouble feeling sick from eating the same food over and over again. It wasn't a potato soup or a potato based dish. It was literally just potatoes steamed until cooked. Three months! That was the only thing he ate and he was content with it and it didn't even bother him at all.
Fun fact potatoes and butter actually contain all the nutrients needed to survive so maybe that's why

I'm not North Korean but I've survived on roasted sunflower seeds and energy drinks for almost a year and one sandwich 2 or 3 times every month during that same year! From 65kg I came back home 52kg young man looking like female photo model. My parents were very scared they though I got some illness. Why this happened? I was working agriculture in another country and drinking one or two energy drinks in the morning at 6am before work was enough. When I finished work at around 2pm, back home, shower and then movies, TV shows, football (soccer), chatting with my family, watching videoclips, all that literally the rest of the day until midnight - every day. The sunflower seeds were sustaining me as I ate like 6-7 very large packs a day while watching movies and TV shows. Its like I couldn't find time to go to the kitchen and cook something. I did not have much inside it anyways as I don't like cooking. I considered cooking and even properly eating as a waste of time... Yeah I know, don't say it. I know I was wrong and stupid. I'm not torturing myself like that anymore though.
Being born in North Korea is the definition of life not being fair
It's crazy how one man can rule over millions into misery, but the millions do not have the guts to overthrow the one person responsible for their misery.
You need to remember that 1) the people have been and are programmed like robots and NEVER veer from it. 2) Nobody trusts anyone, even their own family members inc. offspring,so there is no dissent, no real chance of escape or defection. If for example a son does try to escape, commits one of the million offences like stealing a potato but evades capture, punishment passes in absentia to his parents, siblings and grandparents. 3) People who are "lucky" enough to have an old Black&White TV can only watch what the Kim Regime "pipes" through, the same as ALL computers. 4) If you get seriously ill, start preparing to meet your maker because there is NO Health Service, free or otherwise, NO Surgeons and very few doctors who have only the level of a Good First Aider but has NO drugs, antiseptics, painkillers, dressings etc. I'd need a toilet roll to list ALL the problems.
Because it's not "One", it's the military complex itself (The four and three star generals, the higher Korean Worker Party memebers, the higher State Officials... the Kims are just actors, in the end. Never read "The Bog Brother"?). Moreover, how are you supposed to rebel, if you barely can stand? The North Korean Government has been told to make life condition for their citizens WORSE than how they should be only for the Nation's economic condition ON PURPOSE, because half-famined people don't have the phisical strenght to rebel... at all.
Moreover, defector said that, when revolts starts in one province (because they starts, sometimes) special unit from the army, the only ones actually armed, trained to use firearms and well feeded, comes and killes everybody (usually other soldiers) who have revolted. Since in North Korean internal mobility isn't allowed (you need a special permit from the Government to go outside of your little village, even in the same province) and since national tv and newspaper never talk about this local revolts, other citizen knows NOTHING of what happens, making national coordinates revolts impossible to happen.

I'm in the US Army and was stationed in South Korea twice(I chose to do so and loved it). I worked along KATUSAs and made a friend with one of them that I still talk to. If I'm correct, ROK soldiers (who are also drafted) have to do 2yrs of service and afterward return for a couple of weeks of training every year until reaching a certain age. But even in the ROK Army, they don't get paid well. As KATUSA soldiers, I believe my friend told me they get paid only $2mo! And this was back in 2004!
forced military service like that is a discrimination, free cannon fodder for the politians' agendas, look at the mandatory military service in Eritrea, look how long it lasts.
I am escapee from the old Soviet Union, it was mandatory for every men over 18 to serve for 8 years and you got no pay at all. The only thing you got is your uniform, a barrack to stay and sleep in and some food to eat. Not a penny payment ever. I was lucky enough to escape before I reached 18.

I'm sure those with money would bribe their way out, but what about civil service? Like Jehovah witnesses are forbidden from serving in the military due to their religion and many countries like South Korea and Finland don't make them serve, but for decades they went to jail. I wonder what Jehovah witnesses men did in the Soviet Union, and pacifists and what not...I guess it's jail or get shot for not serving? Nothing less than inhumane slavery.

The height requirement for joining the army for North Korea is so ridiculous that it’s like the average height for 10-12 year old boys in where I live. This just shows how little food they are given, and that’s really sad

I'm Taiwanese and after watching this all I have is gratitude for my own country. We do have to serve but we are in MUCH BETTER conditions than whatever the fuck NK soldiers are going up against. God bless them and maybe one day they will revolutionize...

@@davidgordon702 hey David :) thanks for your kind words and thoughtful question. Well, i think that n and s koreas should be united. But i agree with you that there would be some problems especially financially. But for the sake of north koreans i wish we will be united. And also for practical matter, reunion isnt only that bad because north korea has lots of mineral contents and since south korea can only be travelled via airplanes atm, reunion will finally allow for transportation via motor vehicles to russia china mongol and more!! Though first few years would be extremely chaotic and problematic after the reunion, I’m hopeful that it would also be not only beneficial but also humane :)

Yes an knowing it's caused by US sanctions on your nation. USA blocks shipments of fuel needed to process food. One year the usa blocked fuel during harvest causing over a million to die in famine the usa caused.

It certainly is True, North Korea has one of the largest militaries in the world. I believe that it is the fourth largest one. But, one of the major problems is, most of their military members are incredibly under nourished. And are ill prepared for combat. There fore, it is more than likely, that in the event of any confrontation with them, Kim Jung Un would more than likely resort to using some ( or all ) of their nuclear weapons. We can only hope that like most other things in that country, the weapons of mass destruction that they do possess, are in operational, and do not properly work. Maybe a missile that they do launch into the atmosphere, at us. Would double back, and strike them, instead. lol
@@davidgordon702 modern anti air weapons are very advanced, maybe they can destroy kim missile before enter japan and south korea airspace. And dont worry about nuke explode and destroy cities. Nuclear explosion will only happen if trigger at right moment and condition that only a very accurate bomb timer can achive so it wont blow up as a nuke when being shot by missile, only as a normal bomb.

When I was in the U.S. Army (Ft. Polk), I was given a room, a small refrigerator, a microwave oven, a bed, a dresser, and a clothing locker. I shared a bathroom with a next-door neighbor. I had two phone lines available, and I paid for internet service. It was a pretty good set up compared to the North Korean barracks.

Thank you for your service. I’m a former US Army Airborne Infantryman. I jumped into Camp Blanding, Mississippi a couple times from Panama. One of my best friends was a Vietnam vet who said if you saw a squad of grunts slogging through the bush and one of them was standing straight up, shoulders back, his weapon at port arms and looked happy to be there, that guy had been stationed at Fort Polk. The 5th Mech (M113’s) was stationed there when I was in.

I understand that it's difficult for the people to organize a rebellion; they can't trust anyone. A neighbor might turn them in to authorities. They're trapped and starving to death.
Moreover, North Korean Government is being told to malnourishes citizens and low rank soldier ON PURPOSE, to make them unrealistic to rebel... how do you fight, if you can't stand because of malnourishment?
Despite North Korea’s “military first” policy, I now see the soldiers go through absolute hell, and it’s no better than what ordinary citizens have to suffer through.

After watching this video I realized that I am so blessed with what I have. I thought my life was difficult with lots of school work and extracurricular activities but I was incredibly wrong.

She escaped from North Korea, and in her childhood (basically in kindergarden) they were given candy, treats, and every good thing in the name of the" great leader" and all of them were taught to love him. @@imkotable This is a grave overstatement (though what's been done to Palestine over the years is certainly repellent to me and seems out of all proportion to the attacks that Palestinian extremists launch every so often at Israel). There are many groups out there doing whatever they can and are allowed to. Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) is just one example.
As the video itself showed, you're right not to believe that. There are humanitarian groups that have tried, and I expect continue to try. But if Kim won't even let them in, that rather stops their efforts right there. It's as if he dedicates himself to a certain number of crimes every day.
I don't know what happens to anything or anybody flying over North Korea. Russian MiGs? Ground to air missiles (easier to afford them when you don't bother feeding your people, nor give them any electricity, nor ... )? Whatever it is, it seems a safe bet that any group flying over to drop humanitarian aid will be shot down.
With China sharing such a long border with them, and apparently having something closer to agreement with them than practically the whole rest of the world, you have to wonder what part China has in this. I guess we should know, but I for one do not. Same for Russia, with the very short distance between the Russian and North Korean coasts.

Ummm. . . . there are plenty of Korean War veterans that would absolutely disagree with this statement.
I grew up starving despite living in North America, my parents just didn't buy me food, and because I was very afraid of them, I didn't tell on them. People outside this area of understanding often ask "Why do they comply?", and I did grow up also feeling some sense of guilt and embarrassment, but that was all internal only. Outwardly I would never dare to risk getting in trouble which would not only affect me, but the rest of my family members.
The word "brainwashing" isn't taken very seriously, probably because of how silly the words sound together, but it should be taken extremely seriously. It's not something to be embarrassed of or something that only happens to stupid people. You only need to be broken down and susceptible to it which can happen for a variety of reasons. Starving and eating the same foods for every meal plays no small part in being unable to act for yourself. It drives you insane. I used to cry often, secretly, because I was so hungry and it was driving me mad. I felt uncontrollably unnerved. I didn't know that I could have told someone about my problems, I had no concept or idea of what it would be to trust anyone, I had no idea. So I don't question how it happens to others.

That's truly devastating to read this. I am so sorry you went through such a horrible childhood. No child should ever have to suffer. Maybe you use all that you went through as a way to be an ambassador for other children who are starving. You deserved better and so do all children.

I tell people as much as I can how to recognize when something like this is happening. There have been some cases where people suspected something was off (like with their acquaintance's kids), but only after I really talked about it with them did they start to realize how serious the situation was. People are scared to get involved, but I know that if someone had reached out to/for me when I needed it, I would have been eternally grateful.
My grandfather fought in the Korean War and he said it was trench warfare but freezing cold. He was drafted but loved it and wished he volunteered for Vietnam like my dad did. He also mentioned that Chinese troops were shooting at them just like the Koreans. He is tough as nails to endure all that during the war 🇺🇲

I have been to South Korea twice. The first time in 1967, it was TDY from Taiwan. I didn't make it to the full 90-day tour. The N. Koreans came across towards Seoul. I believe only one survived and was captured. The second time was in 1985 and I was there for a regular 1-year tour. I had the opportunity to go to the DMZ. It was a very eye-opening trip. Being a photographer I normally had my equipment close at hand. I was taking pictures from the pagoda we were on facing north. I pointed my camera toward the guard on the other side and the guard became very agitated. The military guide turned and looked at me and said that I had made him angry because my camera and lens combo was bigger than his equipment. I just smiled and waved to him, move to another location, and continued with my photography. Back then we knew the condition in the north was bad, but not to the extent we can see now. And as another person has commented their uniforms were always too big. I felt the heaviness that was coming from the north. It is sad how people can reverence one person and put them above human decency blows my mind. I spent 22 years in the military and I respect the office, rank, or grade of the individuals over me. But I will never put any one person above God or the dignity of a human being.

In 1967 I was only in SK for just under 90 days for my TDY tour. I was in Seoul at the 8th Army area. The area outside of the military installation was very primitive. None of the upscale modern buildings as I saw when I went back in 1985. Right outside of the installation, I can only remember seeing one traffic light hanging very loosely and swinging back and forth. Pass that light there were lots of rice fields. The scariest part of being there then was the constant threat of NK coming across. That did happen in my last month there and I was able to leave early and go back to Taiwan. I can't really say that I enjoyed that short tour there because I did not get out and involve myself in the real culture. My second time was different, in the middle, Camp Humphreys, I learned a lot about what surviving was all about. I know today SK has just jumped in change and it is still growing.
If I could I would give that Soldier food secretly and just be on my way. It would show that there are people out there who cares.

A guy from my unit went on leave to North Korea (he had family there), while there Kim Jong-il passed away. Someone posted on his facebook: "mission accomplished!"

I saw a video made by a Russian journalist, who successfully entered NK and managed to film there. If you are entering the country they take your electronics, especially smart phones and laptops. And though they claim otherwise, they do their best to try and access info from those devices, so the idea that a Facebook post is a very real concern.
N.korea (bad Korea) is one of the worst places to live - starving in the dark while a Baby Huey looking , chopped haircut sociopath eats excessive extravagant feasts. A massive army of conscripts that can walk in sync, but never trained with firearms .

The thing that just makes this even more sad is this will probably happen for hundreds, if not, thousands of years until someone finally realizes this isn't right.

A flawed comparison. The "west" has many more features than the N Korean army. What is the problem?
Throughout thousands of years of human history, most likely there were empires similar to N. Korea. Many times they collapsed due to the food situation or war. We all just know about N. I'm South Korean and in Seoul. Unfortunately we have family that we cannot get out of North Korea who have been stuck since the war. My great aunt has lost her son who died from starvation and exhaustion in one of these barracks. They would not allow them to bring his body home until 3 months later! He sister has had both of her daughters taken from her and have been taken into the pleasure squad. She can never see her daughters again the only way for her daughters to get out of the squad is to be married off to high ranking officials who basically purchase them once they're of no use to him on the pleasure squad.
That is so horrible. I don't know what to say. I am so sorry for them.

I wish I could just break into North Korea and take some soldiers with me to countries with more freedom and less torture such as Canada, South Korea, Japan, Australia and the USA. No one deserves this kind of treatment. Edit: Some are saying these countries soldiers go through similar training, I’m saying I want to give them more free lives where they can be who they want to be and live with a normal life with friends, pets and family.
If the US actually went to war with North Korea ( presuming that China stays outta it) , that war would be barely a skirmish because 90% of the Korean Peoples' Army Soldiers and 70 % of the Officers would come over to the US's Side and say " Hey ,wanna help Us get rid of that Baby Huey of a Leader of North Korea and then North Korea can reunite with South Korea and then We'll be Friends?"

I served for 6 years in the US Army and hearing all of this just blows me away. Ever since I got out in 2012 the VA takes care of their own, with some incredible health care.

I remember learning that rampant malnutrition was a key factor in who lost the Civil War & WW1. Another losing factor was being behind in technological advancements. I think that North Korea's strategy of just having large numbers of starving soldiers would go over in a war about as well as putting kids in a weight loss camp into a military training course.

I’m currently in the US military and I already finished my basic training and now I’m training on my mos ( Military occupational specialty ). But anyways, I actually enjoyed joining the military and the basic training staying away from my family for more than 2 months and finally meeting them on my graduation. We were given our phones for 15-20 mins every Sunday only. We had to train everyday except Sunday. But our living condition was very nice. We had warm showers, washers and dryers on our floor for free, we were given a wall locker which was quite big and even had another locker inside it with 3 drawers for personal stuff. Our beds were somewhat nice, we were given 2 blanket and 2 sheets and a pillow. We were given meals 3 times a day and it wasn’t that bad. We had desserts, fruits and veggies and condiments.
But over here in AIT ( advanced individual training ), it’s much much nicer. We have a nice room with 3 of us living in one room. One bunk bed and a single bed, 2 night stands with drawers for each of us and 2 lamps. Also, we have 3 desks for us and 3 personal drawers on each desk with a comfy chair and a lamp on each desk. 3 lockers with cubbies inside. 1 toilet in each room and a sink. It’s quite comfortable here compared to North Korea
Yeah I went through basic too and being in basic in the US army is probably better than being in the regular army there. Being in their army is probably like being in a really tough boot camp the whole time. This makes me happy to be in the USA

There’s actually no minimum height requirement for the US army, though there is a minimum and maximum weight limit for each height. The chart stops at 4’8, if your height is lower than 4’8, your weight requirement will still be for 4’8, which is pretty hard to maintain if you’re too short, meaning you’re more than likely to always hitting the below minimum weight limit. There’s even a minimum and maximum body fat percentage. Going below the body fat percentage labels you as malnourished and will be forced to be placed on double portions consisting of very high calories and workouts to build up muscle to drastically increase weight, depending on how severe you can be placed on a medically cleared steroid to boost rapid strength building. This practically the same for over the body fat percentage, you’ll be labeled as overweight and will reduce your calorie intake and workouts focused on cardio and calorie burning exercises, severe body fat percentage can allow the military to give a steroid metabolism booster to help you itch rapid weight gain. I speak from experience when I enlisted in the military right after high school with the weight of 113 at 5’6. The minimum for my age and height was 115, so I was labeled as malnourished and placed on double portions in basic and was forced to jello after every double portion meal. I was also smoked more than the other guys focusing on upper body smoke sessions. I graduated basic with weight of 145, but I had to then maintain my new diet because my metabolism turned to shit because of my new diet.

The height thing is also a tactic I saw in SK at the JSA when I was stationed there. SK soldiers who were taller than average were stationed at the JSA as an intimidation tactic on the north. I saw this first hand.

My dad was a POW Guard during the Korean War. He said the North Koreans and Chinese were so brain washed that it blew his mind. He could not make them see sense.

Imagine the US army and marines going out through the world in terrible shape and devastating hungry. I'm a Marine Veteran. Boot camp and continuous training was rough for me. I'm not the ideal physical Marine; however, I volunteered and I had heart to thrive. It's both a honor and privilege to serve the USA. I had my share of faulty leadership. However, I never wanted anything different. When I meet any military personnel, I thank them for their service to their respective country. I never met anyone from North Korea; however, South Korea is a wonderful country to visit! Just not familiar with their living conditions...

Got to see a batch of soldiers during trip to NK in 2018 for their national day. We got to go to the Victorious War Museum (where the USS Pueblo is), and we aren't allow to wonder the place on our own we were led by a female soldier that looks almost exactly like the one standing besides the tourist in the video. I think they specially chose female soldiers as guides as there are a batch of them there leading other groups to the museum. But it was mostly man when we were at the DMZ. The one that led us was friendly and allow us to take photos with him, smiling all the way through. Though I must say he is kinda thin...
