I wouldn't be surprised it survived because they most likely used some form of plastic to bind the oled pixels to. LCDs are almost universally built on glass so had it been a LCD it would not have survived that. Even though the oled panel this monitor used might not have been intended to be flexible it might still have a bit of flex room without damage due to the non glass material it was likely manufactured on. Not that there isn't OLEDs that use glass substrate too but I bet more and more of them are starting to use more flexible materials as the whole curved monitor/flexible flip phone type stuff becomes more common.
Thanks for all the information. That’s very interesting. Yeah no LCD would have survived. They can be wildly fragile. It’s cool that OLEDs flexibility (If it’s not on glass as you mentioned) leads to some extra durability.

Crazy how new tech still has some of the issues old tech had. I remember old CRT TVs & early plasma screens having the 'burn in' issues over time. Granted the process took longer but you'd think companies would have a solution to prevent that kind of damage.
Honestly the shipping company should be held responsible and pay back every penny for any damaged goods. Maybe then they would fucking learn not to hire idiots that throw everything because they are some lazy useless twats that hate their job. If you can be careful with fragile boxes then you have to business running a shipping company.
if you get a damaged/fake product and the shipper doesn't reply or refuses to refund the money you can just get eBay to refund your money. for example u see a good deal on a graphics card and you purchase it. after a few days you get a brick shipped to your house in a gpu box. the shipper doesn't reply to your msg and ghosts you completely. you can call up the eBay customer support and ask for an refund. if you report them in eligible time (like a week or so) you can get your money back. thats why its recommended to not do your payment off ebay even if 'the seller is saying ebay will take a cut and he doesnt want to pay the cut' its most likely a scam and he will ghost you.
If the seller is unwilling to help you, you can report it to eBay as the product did not arrive in the condition it was sold to you in. I've had pretty good experiences with the eBay team in the past, but typically a reputable seller will be willing to help you out in some way.
I buy/sell on ebay sometimes. Yes, if something gets damaged in shipping, the seller is the one liable and you can get a return, and in any case where the seller is at fault, they also pay the return shipping cost. Sometimes the seller will simply give you a refund if the return shipping cost would be too high, or in some cases they will try to negotiate a partial refund if the item is still usable. That said, haggling the buyer for a partial refund is a tactic that often gets abused by sleazy sellers even when the damage/mistake is entirely on them, and you are within your right to hold your ground and either wait for a return or a full refund. In general, ebay's return policy is reasonably good in my experience, though.
I knew it would work, as foldable OLED phones exist. I would lay it flat and carefully apply pressure from my palms and try to remove some of the bend that way. It wont hurt it much as OLED is flexible and shouldn't have any repercussions.
I mean, that's a pretty good price for what was originally only a scratch. It seemed the seller also did really try his best to make sure he packed the monitor well despite not having the original packaging anymore. The panel bending just looks like typical US/Canada shipping experiences/shenanigans to me.
Despite the damage suffered during transit, at least the seller was communicative and willing to work with you on it. Hopefully they'll do a better job at packing stuff up next time... this is also a reason to keep the box for these sorts of things... monitors, tvs... my wife thinks I'm crazy for doing these things, but it makes moving or shipping things WAY easier
Fo such a massive discount I would choose the one with the dents and the scratch over the new one, people above mentioned prices over 1k (Yes my current display is also used and has a scratch down right, but I just forgot its existence xD)
OLED is pretty resilient to bending. There's even that one monitor with "adjustable curvature" - it uses a regular or close to a regular OLED element, just sandwiched between bendable sheets of plastic instead of stiff, AFAIK.
Okay, well since you can actually buy monitors that allow you to customise how curved they are, I think then that that's totally what you should do. Rig up some sort of frame that gently and evenly clamps around the outside of the display, and then slide it, twist it, ratchet, tweak that tuning peg until it cries out in a minor key etc.
You should review the HP Elitebook 840 g1 or the g2. They both have a dedicated AMD gpu and a massive glory hole. You don't even need to undo a single screw to change out the RAM and everything is visible once you open it up. The glory hole is literally the entire bottom of the laptop. I'm pretty sure you would love that!
You notice white scratches because they are on a black screen, just put car wax on it and it should go dark. You really need to get some MDF board that is bigger than the display and tape it to that, ie, the MDF takes the impacts instead of the monitor.
One of OLED's og selling points was being flexible, so knew the bending damage wouldn't have hurt it. Doesn't stop other things from being broken though. 😅
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why you always save your monitor boxes. There's no better packaging for shipping a monitor than the packaging it came in.
Best burn in test is to run a TV streaming app, disable display sleep in PC and monitor, and find a channel that has a continuous lower-third ticker. Let run for a week!!!
Apparently you can treat scratches with either toothpaste or fat cream (like the ones you use when you have dry skin). I personally tried the fat cream. If you do it a few times, the scratch gets lets visible. Toothpaste apparently works like a polishing agent and removes the upper layer off the panel. Kind of like on faded headlights on old cars. Maybe worth trying.
LED panels these days are built using the same displays, whether they're curved or flat, it is just a matter of how bendy they are and what maximum radius they can achieve. The fact that it's a bit bent and dented is probably fine considering this fact, just bend it back on that corner if it bothers you i guess xD
I'm torn between wanting to see Dawid Does VR Stuff, and wanting it to become a running gag that "next video is the VR video, swear to god you guys fr this time, just a few more videos in the can then it's definitely the VR video, it's literally coming out next month I promise, etc."
G'day Dawid, 😱😱😱😱😱The reason I keep my PC Component Packaging when I buy new stuff, especially Monitors. Would have been a really nice buy if not for the Transport Damage, I couldn't live with that.
I'm hesitant to buy monitors off ebay because of the likelihood of being damaged in shipping but I've gotten some great deals on monitors at the local thrift store before. I got an LG Ultrafine 24 inch monitor for like 10 bucks recently, and they sell for like 500 dollars on ebay lol. Only downside is they're meant to be used with Apple and not a pc so you have to work some cable wizardry to get them to work with a regular windows pc.
I took a chance on an open-box display model Samsung G8 34" OLED for a little under half price. 3440x1440p @ 175hz, but it looks better than any of the 4k monitors I've used so far. "Sharper" images can't compare to actual color-blending done well; I can't wait for 4k OLED prices to drop a little more.
Nice I just bought a KTC mini-led for $330 that's was pretty over saturated with heavy haloing out of the box. Once I tuned the black equalizer and stuff it's been great for a true HDR 10 bit mini led. I don't know If I would have chosen this half curved oled instead... but it's nice that it works!
I’ve always thought the postal service (any of them) are kinda a scam. Not only do you pay them to ship your item but it you want guarantee that it’ll arrive in good condition you have to buy “insurance” on your package. Why do I have to pay more (sometimes a ridiculous amount more) just to ensure they carry out the service properly?
Hi Dawid, strip the monitor down and bend the case back into shape, you might marr the finish slightly but otherwise it's not really a difficult job to strip a monitor. Best Wishes
I only ever tryed vr once on ps4 and man let me tell you having glasses is definetly a living hell for that lol it's cool that zenni makes those perscription plug in lenses tho never seen those before and it's a good idea!
is it possible to somehow repair that very noticeable dent that the monitor sustained during transit?Would it involve replacing the entire display panel?
Ive got an alienware oled, purchased brand new, and I've later noticed some scratches on the screen coating. I don't know where they came from, but in actual usage it's impossible to tell they exist.
The oled panel by itself is bendable, is it not? That’s why LG has TVs that are able to roll up with their high end models. You might be able to bend it back to a straight-ish position, but I think the metal chassis will have a higher risk of shearing apart from bend stress.

Fo such a massive discount I would choose the one with the dents and the scratch over the new one, people above mentioned prices over 1k (Yes my current display is also used and has a scratch down right, but I just forgot its existence xD)
Impressive it survived for sure! When you first took it out I just thought it was supposed to be a curved monitor
You got a free curved upgrade during shipping. Nice!
I can't stand people who don't know how to package a monitor for shipping.
I love your comments Dawid, they always make me laugh
You notice white scratches because they are on a black screen, just put car wax on it and it should go dark.
You really need to get some MDF board that is bigger than the display and tape it to that, ie, the MDF takes the impacts instead of the monitor.
What’d the total end up being after the refund?
Everyone: At Computex
Dawid: Used OLED from ebay!
Never change!
Still a lot, I ended up getting the Alienware 34 inch ultra wide QDOLED for 400 on sale from Dell
One of OLED's og selling points was being flexible, so knew the bending damage wouldn't have hurt it. Doesn't stop other things from being broken though. 😅
how fitting as I was just looking at OLEDs this morning. As I want to move away from my msi VA panel.
Thanks for the awesome video as always Dawid 🙂
The AC/DC power adapters of the 2nd hand monitor always have problems...
Dawid, I'd love to see a video where you try to straighten out the monitor!
Some monitors you have to pay extra to get curved. You got a DIY curve at a slight discount (if he does adjust it)
Holy crap that screen bent shatters my heart.
G'day Dawid,
😱😱😱😱😱The reason I keep my PC Component Packaging when I buy new stuff, especially Monitors.
Only downside is they're meant to be used with Apple and not a pc so you have to work some cable wizardry to get them to work with a regular windows pc.
can you please review rtx 4000 ada?
it's a 70w card that has similar perfomence to rtx 3070
How is the new office working out? I hope we get a follow up video about it.
Bend those corners right on back
Oled is surprising flexible
Glad the Nvidia G-Sync sticker is still on, that 10% sticker FPS boost is vital.
Wouldn't be a Dawid video without complications 😂
Now this isn't tech stuff, it's journalism!
Me dumpster diving in college and pulling out a 15" CRT:
"Even with the scratch, this is something I'd be able to live with"
A lil more time shipping and it would be a fully curved display, UPGRADE!!!
You could probably heat the bent areas from the back and try to straighten it up a bit.
I kind of wish you did this, but with the cheapest actually brand new OLED monitor.
Ive got an alienware oled, purchased brand new, and I've later noticed some scratches on the screen coating. I don't know where they came from, but in actual usage it's impossible to tell they exist.
What is the laptop you used ?
U should carefully bend back the the metal displays frame, but have a backup in case:)
Looks like being a Oled saved this monitor. Looks like this a flexible Oled panel to me that saved it from cracking.
What software do you use with your spyderX? I dont see all those graph options in my suite
The oled panel by itself is bendable, is it not? That’s why LG has TVs that are able to roll up with their high end models. You might be able to bend it back to a straight-ish position, but I think the metal chassis will have a higher risk of shearing apart from bend stress.
