I had so many teachers crying when they saw me again. I had pretty bad dyslexia as a kid and also horrible adhd. I'm a sophomore in high school now and I feel bad for them. I knew they wanted to help so bad but they just couldn't! I go to an art school now and I love creative writing! I wish my teachers had this resource. thanks for this Ted talk! All my love!
You sound like the kind of kid I would have really enjoyed. I'm so glad that you have found a place in the educational world that is working for you. Creative people rock! Keep on creating. All the love right back at you!
From someone that is passioned about many topics and wants to learn the best way to aproach new students (I hope to become a professor), this is exactly what I needed to listen to. Incredible speech.
Thank you for your kind words. I have found that most teachers are truly loving and caring (although I've met a few that make me wonder why they went into teaching). The good teachers need permission and support to teach this way - to take the time to get to know their students and teach in the way that works for them - rather than blindly following a curriculum guide, or the 'latest greatest' program!
Thank you for the word you did choose - that means so much to me. I feel that making connections with my students has been one of the greatest tools in helping my students learn and thrive. And those same connections have been such a blessing to me too. I'm proud of you for being so honest and for saying you will do your best. That is all any of us can do.
Agreed! Let's keep speaking out about how to make changes that serve our students well. Let's build momentum. I was grateful for this opportunity to speak out. Let's all speak out in whatever ways we can.
So glad you enjoyed it. I want to motivate those going into teaching and those who are already teaching but feeling discouraged. I also hope to inspire instructional leaders to allow teachers to teach this way - to make it rigorous, but also engaging and fun - for everyone - including the teachers! Best of luck to you Natasha!

This is one of the most underrated speech I have ever watch ,great !
A wonderful teacher, kind and respectful, and your words are very beautiful. May God bless you. If they used this method with us in schools, we would be good and we love studying. In my country, a failed study, and a teacher beats the child and also scolds him with bad words. He leaves school. The child is the reason for this method. Until Jed thinks about the reason for the aggressive style with a teacher and his student, and he has pressure from his family, his teacher, and the child’s teacher. What should he do?
Thank you for your kind words. I truly hope things change in your country. We all deserve respect. We all deserve to learn in the way that works for us. I am grateful to have this opportunity to speak for all students and teachers.
I’ve railed for many years- since my son was in grade school- about the constant testing and what people call “teaching to the test.” I firmly believe that the rigid standards may be a serious detriment to creative learning and ruin spontaneous teachable moments
Good video, she has experience and great recommendations. How to teach the better way and not to folllow the curriculum step by step. Have the right approach with students will go a long way. Mind you I have met students who were simply not interested. I am a French tutor.
I agree, some students lack motivation, or are disinterested. I would, however, say it’s our job to figure out why. Talk with them and honor - truly listen and try not to judge - about why they are disinterested, and what would make it more interesting to them. Try a different approach that reflects what they say. Of course, you have to have a positive relationship for them to be honest with you and trust you. But I have turned things around for many kids by doing that. I’m a stubborn teacher - and I’m stubborn about finding out what WILL make things work for them.
Thank you for watching my TED talk. This approach fits under many titles that have come and gone over the years. I hadn't really looked at Phenomenon-Based Learning before reading your comment, but I see how what I've described fits within the framework. Awesome! Let's keep looking for all the best ways to reach our students!
Thank you Ma'am. I am currently teach as student-teacher. In my experience, students raise their hand nonstop if the question or activity is all about expressing themselves. for example: describe yourself in oneword, what song describe your feelings at this moment. if you going to learned musical instrument what instrument would you select?
Thanks for the support. I thought about going into administration - but what I really love is working directly with the students. I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to share my thoughts with a wider audience through TED.
Ms. Freitag taught my son in fourth grade - amazing! Changed the trajectory of his life!. Thank You for your continuous hard work.
Thank you Angel! I remember him very fondly! Please give him a hug for me!

Oh and I totally agree with her. Great talk!!
@@carlenedean8382 Thank you. You are right - we miss so many teachable moments because we are so worried about getting to the next standard or skill.
