- Did you choose your career, or did someone else do it for you? Adult developmental psychologist and career counselor Sharon Belden Castonguay unpacks how personal identities intersect with cultural influences to unconsciously affect our choice of work-and how self-awareness will be the key to success in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Sharon Belden Castonguay, EdD, is an adult developmental psychologist and career counselor with twenty years of experience working with professionals at all levels of their careers. She is the Director of Wesleyan University's Gordon Career Center and the host of two podcasts, Careers by Design: The Interviews and First Year Out. Prior to joining Wesleyan's team she was the Director of the Graduate Career Management Center at Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business. She has also served as a career counselor at Harvard University and at Boston University's Questrom School of Business. Through her career consulting practice she has worked with many other top universities, and has been an invited speaker at Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard Medical School, The New York Academy of Sciences, and Princeton, among others. She received her doctorate in human development from Harvard. She also holds an MA in Education from the University of Michigan and a BA in Government from Smith College. What I got from this is that I should take a chance and pursue what I want to do for my life even if it might possibly be a bust. If i succeed, I'm happy with my career and If all else fails at least I know I tried and can move onto the next thing with no regrets.

I love that she focused on self-awareness because this is an area that I think a lot of people forget about in regard to influences on career decisions, ESPECIALLY with the college population!

I took away from it that align career with who you are, not blindly chasing the one thing you're passionate about, but 1. understanding who you are and what works for how you're wired is important and 2. Professional orientation should be a subject at school as mathematics and chemistry are. We should start our journey of looking what we like and want do all our life as early as possible.
I have a big issue with this notion of career identity. What happens if our career identity is one that is a dead end? What if society and the market do not value the talent and uniqueness we bring? In a perfect world, what she says is correct. But the disturbing truth is that many of us will not have the opportunity to live out our identity. You can be anything you want to be, as long as it is banker, tech entrepreneur, or programmer. The rest of us may just have to make do…
An excellent question, that unfortunately has an obvious negative solution. The current world we live in is competitive and ever changing, like fashion trends. So the best solution is to have multiple skills that can be useful in landing a job and helps one be the best in whatever field they are in.
I think if there's a passion that you've discovered through understanding yourself, you just to try to make it happen. Just try and see what happens. If you fail, congrats, you tried very hard to achieve something that is very important to you, look at the man/women you've become, look at the journey you went through and the challenges that you've faced but thought at first that are too hard for you but you still overcame them. That's it really.
Everything needs time, even recognizing ourselves. Most people don't have that patience. But we can't blame them either for maybe they have loans to pay and don't even think that their passion is important and those time we reflect on ourselves won't pay any of our paychecks. But to those who have the priviledge to know their passion, and can follow it, I hope they have patience to endure anything that happen because I always remember this phrase "with a great power comes great responsibility", so it will never be easy. This is well-informed and sheds light on how impactful it is to become aware of the systems in which we live and have learned to identify ourselves within! Identity absolutely matters, and this is because of the way our society works today and the system of values and hierarchies that are so deeply ingrained. To learn about the world is to learn how we've ended up exactly where we are..
Passion is overrated. We should focus on internal liking and disliking. Allowing yourself to make mistakes.

I have been blessed to have had long lasting jobs that I loved. Now that I have relocated I need to find a new career in my new chapter of life. This video encouraged me to seek that next enjoyable and fulfilling job/career and not settle for anything else.

Great point that most people don't take the time to figure out who they are before making a decision of what they want to be. Unfortunately I see this quite a bit with those I coach.
Its a very ironic time we live in. We want nice things, we want a well functioning society we want order, but then it’s hard for us to accept it. Some of the most boring jobs are vital to a good society. I agree with people, I myself struggle with the same thing, I hate boring jobs. So it’s a struggle and battle. If we all went and made a lot of money or everyone chased their dream it would be hard on a well functioning society. But at the same time the we all want freedom and creativity. Paradoxical time period we live in. Also, as we further our economy and technology things are becoming easier to consume on a large basis, not to long ago a small house with a few basic items we’re a blessing, now having so many nice things are normal. Again I am on both sides, I love technology and traveling and living a fun life, but at the same time it makes it harder to enjoy a simple life
But there are no boring jobs, hard yeah but not boring. Careers that you think are boring are prolly someones else's dream jobs. For me being a teacher or a lawyer or a nurse is very boring but I know a lot of people that love these things.

What an amazing talk! I found listening to inspiring people very helpful when looking to make important decisions in my life. I also find that free guides on TH-cam were helpful as well as a course I found online called the Career Enhancement Network. It was quite cheap and I had access to many webinars and guides that helped me as well. I always like to keep my options open when looking for career advice and there is no such things as too much information! I hope everyone finds what they are looking for in life!

This has been a very nice Ted Talk, in my opinion.
I have been a cop since I graduated college in 2019. I was super successful and was voted Officer of the year twice and also promoted to Corporal and then sergeant as one of the youngest officers in the department. However, I was always feeling like I wasn’t satisfied with what I was doing. I always have been fascinated with aviation since I was a young kid and decided to follow that path. I halted my policing career and took out a large loan to pursue flight training. But now I find myself questioning if I was following my heart or just needed a break from what I was doing. The thing is that I can see myself doing both. They both take time away from the family in different ways that make me second guess myself sometimes. However, I really think it’s like marriage. When you realize there is no “the one” person for you and it’s really about you deciding to make them “the one”. It’s not always going to be fun and will definitely have its fair share of bad days. But I think you just need to realize that everything no matter what it is will be like that sometimes. You have to be the one to decide and understand that you started down that path for a reason.

Most people's passion is also influenced. Status and money does influence us but we should be able to control them and not let them control us. What people require is fulfilment.
Thank you very much for this inspirational talk, graduated last year and landed on a job , but last month I chose to quit for the well known “lack of passion/not for me” reason, the job wasn’t directly related to my major and for what I know, most of my friends went to phds , which is the popular option…… I should be booking appointments for career / mental health consultations … Sometimes It’s just really hard to figure things out myself , no matter how rational you think you are… often you’re not.

This is a well structured invitation for self reflection. However, if you're looking for a quick fix with immediate career solution, something that involves a list of things to follow. This is NOT it.
The video is quite resourceful if you're looking to truly self reflect about the state of 'you' that best matches your social/outside world. Draw an understanding of where your idea of 'self' is, in the social context of life. Following which deciding on a social identity that you feel best corresponds with the 'truest' idea of self-personification. Then comes the job longevity/security... its well worth watching the first 12:26 of it :P

I’m struggling with making the decision right now. I’ve just started a full-time job a month ago. Before that, I do coaching kids badminton the evening. That’s why i was looking for a routine job at a daytime. Now, I got it. I got what i thought it would fit for me. Unfortunately, i feel so confused. I didn’t enjoy my full time job. Not happy at all. Here is a method I use to choose a career---used it young and now middle age and it worked both times. A few weeks ago I told my subscribers how to know if it is time to change careers or just a venue in the one you have. So now you know you have to change careers completely. What do you do? How do you decide? In a nutshell I advised to first list all sectors of work fields. IE Medical, social work, law enforcement, business, technology, trades. That gives you the general interest of where you want to be. For example--all business for me is out. BUT, you may love the art of the deal. Then you list the jobs in that sector. IE trades ---electrician plumber mechanic. Business--marketing, finance, stockbroker. Medical--nurse, doctor, physical therapist. This seems simple but it works. You just narrow down sector then narrow down all jobs in that sector. Then you make your plan how to get there. Most people when they want to change careers just go into panic mode. The formula above makes it simple and stress free to see what you want to do next for forty hours a week. Hope this helps---Charles

I want to be a vet tech and since then I’ve finished my first semester of college but I also have a lot of ideas for books and comics so in my second semester I’m going to take an art class but more recently I’ve started looking into marine biology so I don’t know how to decide between three interesting fields because if I commit the rest of my life to one I’ll have to let the other one’s die and I can’t do that.

Not necessarily you’ll have to commit to one of them to the rest of your life! If I understood you, you like ‘vet tech’ and marine biology, idk if I’m right, but does vet tech has to do with veterinary? Well, if it has, than marine biology and vet tech can deff be connected, you can do a minor, or even double major and work w both intthe future. About your art root, you can totally have that as a side hustle, you can take art calsses to perfection your tecnic and start posting you comics on the internet. Also, you have to have a lot of self-knowledge to see if one of those passions are hobbies or careers, sometimes when you transform smt that you liked and was your hobbie in a career, it can ‘take out the glow of it’, bc yk, when working w smt, even though you’re passionate abt it, it can be stressful sometimes.
So yeah, that’s my advice, but do what’s best for you :) (also, srry for the long text and maybe for my English too, I consider myself fluent -eng is not my native language-, but idk, sometimes I make some mistakes lol)

My problem is that my decision of future career isn't social. I don't have any friends, my parents don't care who am as long as I'm happy and I don't have any biases. Heck, I would love to wash the floor for the rest of my life if it was paid well. But it's not.
And there's nothing I'm good at that I'm passionate about. I love math, but I struggle with basic examples like subtraction or division (dunno why, I guess I'm just a dummy). I love drawing, but I can't draw, I made zero progress over the years despite me being mesmerized by the process. I love studying, but there's no such profession.
And I'm really good at learning languages. But I will never make it into job, because there's nothing more easy and boring for me than translating. I'd rather go and tinker with my equations.
And so, I think I've been cursed.

One VERY important message missing: Employers do NOT support the "Design Thinking" model. They want someone who has been in the same job for 5/10/15+ years.

I have no idea what to do. I’ve been trying to decide what career path to follow for the past 2-3 years and I’m literally stuck. I’m 24 living at home making enough money to pay rent but that’s it, I feel like I’ve just been waiting and constantly researching careers and trying to figure out what type of person I am but it’s not clear yet. I don’t want to start something until I know that there’s a good chance it’ll be for me. I feel like there’s choice anxiety because of all of the options there are out there. I don’t want to pick something just to find that it’s not for me. Debating on hiring a career counselor now 😅

@@MR-yv5vu I hope you find yours too 😩 it’s so confusing bc I’m constantly like “maybe I should just pick something that contributes to society that I could make my livelihood so I could just start doing something and making more money” but on the other hand I also think to myself “I have the option to live at home with my parents until I figure out and it seems like a lot of other people are living at home and figuring themselves out in their mid twenties so should I just continue doing online research until I figure out a career path that I really wanna pursue?”
The hardest thing to think about for me is thinking about how much time I’m going to spend in the career that I choose. 8 hours a day 5 days a week is a lot with only 2 weeks or so a year of vacation time to see other countries so I want to make sure whatever I’m spending my time doing is something that could allow me to learn a variety of things. I tried community college when I was 20-22 and I changed my major 3x in that short time period so I just stopped going until I could figure it out. It doesn’t help that my parents both have advanced degrees, my dad having a phd and being retired sometimes tries to persuade me to get my bachelors but I don’t want to go into debt when I feel like if I keep looking I could sort through all of the careers out there and find a path where I could make a decent living and teach myself enough about something without a degree. Like Sharon said in her talk, it sucks having everyone around you trying to influence you to take a certain path in life. I don’t know what to do but at this point I’m ready to pick something random and hate my job and my life like everyone else lol
