  • I continue my series of "New Forest Walks", accompanied by my Whippet, with a visit to Setley Pond. We undertake a 3 mile circular route starting & finishing at Setley Pond itself. Along the way we come across two pubs, a Nature Reserve, an old disused Claypit and get to explore the site of an area that was once a Prisoner of War Camp in WW2. As well as the usual new Forest Ponies, we also stumble across a couple of cute Alpacas. Finally, we end up back at Setley Pond & enjoy the spectacle of a radio control model yacht race!
I believe that the foundations of the building that I came across in Roydon Woods (at 11 mins 22 secs) may in fact have related to WW2. The remains of several WW2 building platforms can be found in the Hampshire Wildlife Reserve in the Roydon Woods. The variety of building platforms, concentrated in the north of the woods, show evidence of a camp, possibly the same one identified as Marshalling Camp B.8 (B8, B-8), on an Area B Overlord Administrative Map.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7 Black Action Camera together with a Canon SX 400IS.
Start at Setley Pond FC Car Park. Take the path to the right of the pond, bear around to the let, and cross a gravel road. Bear left again at Pinecroft and continue for 100 yrds on a grassy track. Look out for a stile tucked away to your right (right of Pony Pound) and follow narrow path between hedges & young oak until you reach the A337 opposite The Hobler Pub.
Cross the road, turn left and just beyond the pub turn right through a metal kissing gate. This path takes you over 2 stiles and through a couple of fields. Go over another stile & a footbridge over a stream to start a moderate slope. Path cross 2 roads to a kissing gate entrance to Roydon Woods Nature Reserve.
Keep straight on to 4 way signpost & go into woods, through 5 bar gate. Brideleway drops to a T junction with a gravel track. Turn left & follow track - all the way past The Lodge as it climbs gently to a fork. Keep left here (disused clay pit on right) & carry on out of Reserve to A337 (The Filly Inn is on your right).
Cross over road and continue on turning to Sway. By pass cattle grid & turn let on to path that runs parallel to A337. After 200 yrds, it will lead you on to grazed area (old POW site) & cross heath until you meet a road. Setley Pond car park entrance is just over the road.

Thanks Nigel. Just about managing to keep up with one video a week - a challenge with some of the recent "low light" conditions. Roll on the Spring!

Thank you. I must admit that I was fascinated by how serious the folk were doing the model yacht racing... surprising what people get up to in their spare time! They were enjoying it though & I believe they get a fair few watching them in the Summer.

Beautiful walk Dave! Logan looked toasty in his coat!!!❤🐕 Still think you & Cynthia need to do collab - I want to see the Whippets meet!😄
I'm amazed how many Richard (Bald Explorer) has inspired to start their own channels! It really exciting to see!!!😁👍

Thank you. Yes.. that was Logan's "really thick" coat, reserved for the very cold days! Logan and Echo (Cynthia's Whippet) met on a BE Group walk last year & loved being out together - they are roughly the same age.

Thank you. Looking forward to the Spring, when Logan doesn't need his coat!
