  • This is another video in my series “ New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the village of Burley (as well as nearby Burley Street) which is located 4 miles to the South East of Ringwood in Hampshire.
    My 5 mile circular route starts at the car park next to the Queen Head pub (although I actually leave my car at the Forestry Commission car park at the Burley Cricket pitch to the South of the village.
    After a quick wander through the village, I initially head North past the Fire Station to the entrance of Burley Hill House at which point I take a public footpath uphill through woods to Castle Hill. At the top I get to enjoy some stunning views to the West before exploring the remains of the Iron Age Hill Fort.
    I then make my way down the hill, along a grass track that soon becomes a sunken lane, to the small settlement of Burley Street. My walk continues along Forest road to Burley Moor - a huge expanse of open heathland. After meeting some pigs (it was pannage season in the New Forest), I passed by the edge of the South Oakley Inclosure to a pony pen.
    I then walk down Mill Lane, being careful not to miss a footpath sign on my right, which takes me along a track that crosses the Mill Lawn Brook and brings me back to the outskirts of Burley via a pretty meadow.
    I pass the old chapel (now a residential property) on my way to my final destination - the St John the Baptist Church which has some amazing stained glass windows and some carved wooden mice to find!
    The walk finishes with light refreshment at the Queens Head pub in the village.

    So great to have discovered this video. I lived in Blackbush cottages at Castle Hill in 1952-53, at the tender age of 3-4. It was a long walk down to the bus stop in Burley Street - we had no car then. My father was a teacher at a school in Brockenhurst and rode his bicycle to and from there each day. Before he left each morning he would sit me on the seat of his bike and wheel me around in a circle where the gate still is. One morning he stopped, and calmly allowed an adder to cross the road and under the bike. I have been back to the place since and did the walk you are describing but in reverse coming out of the gate onto the road into the village. Next time I'm in England I'll do it again. David, Devonport, Tasmania.

    I like Burley. Have played golf there once or twice. Every time I see blackberries,I always think of good old Logan. Lots of beautiful houses and that owl carving too. Great video in your usual style .

    Lovely video Dave. Thanks for pointing out those well hidden public footpath entrances. I would never have known they were there and although I've been to Burley many times, it opens up new possibilities for walks.

      Thanks Angela. It is a delightful walk down that footpath by "Stavegate" - under the shade of some conifers, over a stream & through a meadow back to the outskirts of the village.

      Thanks Craig. Fiver is coming on well - now 7 months old! He has already passed his Kennel Club Good Citizens Obedience Bronze Test & indeed has qualified to compete at Crufts 2022 in the show ring. He should make a guest appearance in one of the video walks some time soon!

    Lovely walk. But we noticed that the path by Stave cottage will be shut in October 21 at some point. To repair the missing planks on the bridge we assumed as could not see any other hazards on the route . I have tried to find the notice of this work on line to no avail. The map attached to the notice said there was no alternative route.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the update Carol. I remember seeing the damage to the wooden bridge so as you say, that may be the reason. Hopefully it will be something that can be repaired quickly.

    Hi Dave
    We really enjoy your channel.
    On this walk it looks like the route you took didn't follow your yellow outline on the OS map at the start of the video. Isn't the pony pound in the South Oakley Enclosure and not on the Forest Road?
    On a broader note, it quite difficult to follow your routes on my OS maps, in fact we went off your route when we tried to follow the Basingstoke canal walk! Do you have anywhere we can download your route maps?

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Mike. I have just viewed the video and I can confirm that I followed the route as shown on the OS map on screen. I started my walk at the FC car park at Burley Cricket pitch (red star on map) .... as seen at about 1 min 19 secs into the video. I filmed the "introduction scene" - at the start of the video - from the top of Castle Hill for the simple reason that there was no passing traffic there! The pony pound is located on the South Eastern side of the South Oakley Inclosure. At about 14 mins 39 secs into the video, I explain that I am on the edge of the South Oakley Inclosure and as I start walking Eastwards, you can see the pony pound in the distance as I move towards it. (The film is over a year old now so they may have moved it slightly of course!). When I publish a walk on TH-cam, I always also put up a post on my Facebook page "Dave's Countryside Walks" which includes a number of photos from the walk including a picture of the OS route. If you go to that Facebook page and type in "Burley" in the search option, it should take you to the original post & then you can scroll through the photos until you come across the route map. Alas I do not have the technical ability or knowledge to have or use Apps etc! I hope that helps! Thanks for watching. Dave.

      @@DaveFord I think we'll have to do this walk - I'll let you know how we get on.
      The other half has Facebook so I'll ask here to download the route images. Keep up the good work!
