Muslim Coins with Shiva's Bull: The World of the Hindu Turk Shahs

From the 7th to 10th centuries, a group of dynasties called the Kabul Shahs dominated much of Afghanistan. Their name might seem like that of an Islamic dynasty, but in reality, the Kabul Shahs confound our binary expectations of the medieval world. Most Kabul Shahs were Buddhist or “Hindu” and descended from ethnic groups based in present-day Pakistan and portions of Central Asia. Anirudh Kanisetti explains their forgotten history.

how does it matter, how liberal or conservative all these rulers were. today, hindus, buddhists, sikhs and others are extinct in Afghanistan and less than 2 percent in Pakistan. Besides all those monuments of past no longer exist. even the ones which was hard to destroy in the past, like Bamiyan Buddha were destroyed 20 years ago. I guess, what is the point of all this when end result is what we see today ? I guess it only matters to left leaning historians, media to present a different narrative.

    1) Idk why the idea of turkic and central asian Shaivas is surprising. Shiva was worshiped as far north as present day Uzbekistan and possibly Xinjiang. They existed and some of their descendants exists amongst us today.
    2) Yes communities existed with shared practices, Muslims too would pray and worship at hindu and buddhist shrines. Till about a 100 years ago Muslims and Christians used to worship at the shrines of the same saints in the the levant but not so today. In the context of the subcontinent, Islam changed, largely due to the spread of madrasa education of what the ashrafi elite saw islam as.
3)The Odi Shahis did not vanish. The last Odi Shahi princes migrated to Kashmir over the last century of the Shahi dynasty and merged with the nobility of Kashmir. The clan who remained in the region likely merging into the Punjabi and Pashtun communities around them.
    4) Abu Ali Lawik may have been a brother in law to the shahis and muslim. But the Lawiks converted to islam for political reasons a century and a half earlier. The Lawiks most likely had a close relations with the Shahi both Turkic and Odi Shahis for centuries.
    5) The Saffarid capture of Kabul in 9th century may have been temporary. The Saffarids controlled the citadel of Kabul sure but the city of Kabul below still a majority hindu and buddhist town with a sizeable jewish minority. Many Shahi kings after this date were still coronated in Kabul by paying the saffarids in the citadel. As a Shahi king would only have legitimacy if he was crowned in Kabul.

I like the conceit of Kani. As usual he brings his squint vision to bear of Abu Lawik a vassal of the Hindu Shahis & in all probability a distant relative of them whose forefathers were forced to convert after losing repeatedly to the Saffarids.
The Kabul Shahis lamented the conversion to the Arab's faith & asked this forefather of Abu Lawik to revert back to Hinduism. There's no record of the Kabul Shahis maintaining marital relations with the Lawiks after their conversion.
Apparently when this ancestor of Abu Lawik converted to Izzlam he placed two conditions - he would not partake of beef & he wouldn't be expected to have carnal relations with boys. Yes , you read it right.
Trust Kani to reveal all that here . Poor chap would die of haemorrhaging in his hemorrhoids or maybe this is thev" fluidity " he was referring to .
