You know, a lot of developers would look at this beta and go, "Wow, this is pretty good, let's release it now!" I'm glad that Insomniac went the extra mile and made sure that the game was extra polished!
Well these videos were epic! Thanks for making them, its nice to see spyro fans always looking for new stuff even 14-15 years later =) These were really interesting, you need to make more! Even if they're only short, I miss your videos! =D
Aw, well, thanks for watching them. => I wish I could make more videos, but there's so much going on IRL it's hard to keep up with that alone...but needless to say, if another Spyro beta were to come along, there's no way I'd turn down the chance to do this again!
So I've just watched this for the second time xD And once again, wow thank you for taking the time to make them it must have taken so much work D: It's probably pretty sad how much I love watching stuff like this but Spyro has been a huge part of my life for the last 13 (D:) years and I love seeing that the fans are still active and still finding new things even though the games have been out for 17 years! Watching these again has officially rekindled my obsession (which ultimately led to about 20 deaths in Tree Tops, but let's not mention that...) so yeah. Keep being awesome =D
Spyrobaby9 Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my videos! =) Having everyone watching and commenting made it fun at times it was hard--plus it gave me the chance to share some of the things I know! I still love Spyro too--while I'm not really much a part of the community, there's probably going to be a bit of Spyro in everything I make in the future. => I'm sure there's more to be discovered out there; while I'm not discovering much these days, I reckon there are fans out there who will! Also yes Tree Tops is a murdrous monster. e.g., My Tree Tops run video is only 10 minutes. That time length....is a filthy lie =P
Yay I'm thinking of going back and watching all your videos there's some really cool looking stuff that you've found xD Haha yeah anyone who can complete Tree Tops in 10 minutes is lying =P Haunted Towers used to be harder for me though D= in that level today and I lost one. Bloody. Gem. And it took me 20 minutes to find xD people who say Spyro is 'too easy' have never played Spyro xD
Spyrobaby9 Sure, feel free to enjoy the show again! ;D Boy this game did have its hard moments, not sure if any of them go quite into Spyro 2 Alchemist territoryAAARRRGHTHATSTUPIDALCHEMIST--but I had a heck of a tough time recording full footage of the later level pairs with zero deaths*. I agree, Tree Tops was always hard, but Misty Bog was out to kill me the most, them frogs. D= Missing 1 gem and spending forever finding it is the worst thing that could happen in a Spyro game and we all have childhood horror experiences with it. I kind of miss that part of the game though--except... hmm.... nah, actually maybe not. XP *Okay, this miiight be a lie too... I actually did separate recordings of each level and edited each pair together... because I could only take so much pain =P Anyways, hope you enjoy the now-archive series for the second time if you do watch it again! =3
LXShadow Oh my days Spyro 2 was just painful D: lovely level designs, some horrible challenges in there D= The one in Skelos Badlands with the dinosaurs and saving the cavemen people stands out as one that almost made me break my TV xD oh wow the frogs in Misty Bog were lethal, I can just about handle the trees but I almost always fall victim to a sneak attack from the frogs =c I'm sure I will enjoy it! =D
Spyrobaby9 Terrifying times. =< I also love Spyro 2's atmosphere and designs but the challenges...much pain, so much painnnnnn.... (to that one bird: YES I *DID* HAVE TROUBLE WITH YOUR STUPID TROLLEY) Well on a last note, random trivia! The best way to be safe from those frogs is not to look at them. That'll always save you a few lives; it sure as heck did for me ;)
Thanks a lot for doing this series :DDD. It was great watching all this and finding all of the differences. I'm hoping that I find this beta someday. You made this pretty entertaining with your commentary and stories about what you'd found in the other games codes (ETD). It seriously sucks this is over though. I hope there's a Beta of Spyro 2 and 3 hiding somewhere :D. I look forward to seeing more of your videos in the future :). Once again, thanks!
Awesome find, man! Since the Dark Hollow music is my favorite music in the series, I have no problem with it standing (though temporarily) in place of the Gnasty's Loot music
Very cool LP, I'm glad you did the whole thing as I wished in the first part. =) Also I always thought (before this LP already) something like ''wow, how cool videos, this guy's the true thing'' mainly because you have such great hacking skills so you can show people amazing things. :D But I totally salute you for this LP and I sure did hope during Gnasty's Room that you will find more betas. =)
You're the first one to have thanked me. =) It was a lot of fun, and thanks for watching! This beta isn't on the Internet, but others might be in the future, if luck will have it. I have already started looking for leads on a Spyro 2 beta, but haven't a response yet; I'd need to be really lucky, so let's keep our hopes tame for now. =)
At 0:30 if one looks closely, the life chest on the left is floating in mid air. When Spyro flies the white "smoke" isn't coming out of his wings. Also the sky in Gnasty's Loot, has less moons/planets.
Well, it's a real shame that the series has finally come to an end. Both the series and your unique commentator skills have entertained us all, I have thoroughly enjoyed what you've uploaded so far, and I really hope you either find another Beta of a game to make videos of, or you begin regularly releasing videos of other things (like LPs of non-beta games).
Thanks. =) Sadly I don't have any other betas (besides the virtually identical The Eternal Night one), although I really wish I did! But if I do manage to get another beta at some point, you guys will be amongst the first to know. =)
If I manage to get another beta at some point in the future, then that'll be the next game I'll tackle! I wish I knew what and when, but I don't know yet. All I do know is that they're out there somewhere!
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the series. =) The main concern wasn't so much about Insomniac (or Activision and Sony today), but the owner of the beta. Before sharing a copy, he asked that I keep the beta off the Internet. Our share was something of a trade service, too, so it wasn't given to me specifically for no reason. =) I understand why you're disappointed at that (who wouldn't be?), but that's how it is for now. I'm just glad I got permission to share this much - and in such a fun way too!
Haha fair enough :P. I saw this video for hidden music in Spyro, it said it was for a level called Haunted Speedway. It's sucks that there aren't any of those levels left in by accident, like the impossible tower was in Spyro 3 :(. I always thought, that if Insomniac bought Spyro back, that they should make a 4th one, basing it off the levels that were cut out of the first three.Obviously, Spyro games can't be made forever, but if it's going to stop, I would want Insomniac finishing the series.
It's awesome to see differences still being found even almost a year after the series ended. =) I used a shiny silver PS2 controller - it hasn't failed me once! (Well, except for every time I die, which is inherently the controller's fault of course =P)
Hey LXShadow! This series has always been one of my favorite things on youtube, but it looks like somewhere along the way your commentary for the videos got broken for some reason. I was wondering if it was possible to restore the commentary on these since it was the best part about it.
Thanks; I'm glad you enjoyed it (and didn't send a knife my way with the annotations). =P I'm not sure what's coming up, I guess it depends on time and luck. Or maybe a bit of hacking!
I used a free program called 'Debut Video Capture', or something much like that. It's not optimised for games, but it's free and did the job! I used DivX on the high-performance settings as the codec. It's the only one that gave recorded in HD at full frame rate on my PC. =)
Hey, will you do the Ratchet and Clank : Up your Arsenal beta? 1108? It can be found on the iso zone, and it's not a torrent! But it's split into two parts, and you can't open one part with winRar, you have to merge the files together. :D
Hi, I used Debut Video Capture for this video when it was freeware. However, I think it's gone shareware since then, so now I'd recommend Open Broadcaster Software. =) I used fullscreen mode in 720p for this video.
Hey, couple questions if you are able to answer them. - Have you datamined this build for any unused worlds, textures, sounds, models, etc? - Are there any more beta builds we don't know about? - Do you know of any Spyro 2 or 3 Betas? - Any clue when this could be released?
No problem Cabbage! - yes, back in the day I scanned through it thoroughly although I didn't get as far as models since SpyroEdit wasn't as well-developed at the time. - probably! Unfortunately I also do not know about them :p there was a TH-camr named something like GamerZero I believe who had partial betas of Spyro 3 and maybe 2 or 1, but similarly not released. There was also a later Spyro 1 beta, with videos put up by a tomb raider fan whose name escapes me, and he said he would release it sometime - but no word on that in the past few years. This is the only one I have and likely the only one I ever will as I'm no longer hunting down this kind of thing ^^ - same as above :) - as I haven't been able to get permission to release it, there are no plans. .
Hi, not a problem. =) I can say that the owner had involvement with Insomniac before the game was released, so he's actually the original owner of this build. So don't worry - it wasn't stolen from Insomniac's archives or anything =P
- 0:44 The sky lacks a clean gradient between the purple and green sections. - 4:15 The thief isn't "waiting" for you. It seems as though he started flying as soon as he heard the door opened, lol. - 8:00 There is no final cutscene that plays after completing the level, is that what the error was about? Well really this level is actually really complete, just that the textures and visuals are out of whack. Thanks for sharing this Beta with us! Hopefully this isn't the last we see of your vids!
I just now noticed, I said this at Cliff town and Ice Cavern, but you said they don't appear yet. There are no eggs next to the worlds with eggs in the inventory
Holy dang! It's been almost 5 years already since this video came out. Maaan! I feel old... And just when I remember commenting on these and pointing out the differences. Good times! Yep! Good times! Kinda like this game! :D Although, my english back then suuu..uuucked! LMAO XD
Darn it really has been that long. We're all old now :P Yeah it was fun! Bet your shoe tasted delicious. ;D Also your English was fine and totally readable but hey it's improved anyway :)
Thanks hehe. Yeah that "bet" didn't turned out all that well for me. HAHA! I really figured back then, that the last level wouldn't be developed at all. It happens sometimes with those early "full" demo's. :D Kinda like Crash Bash and Oxide Ride Part 1 and 2. You've found any other particularly rare and elusive early demo discs like that one?! It would be nice to dig in such a tasty delicious treat once again. ;D PS. You were very lucky to enjoy a trip of this demo. ;D I envy you haha! (I love beta versions of the old games so much)
Yeah I was surprised when I found it as well. That said I think I did a sneak peek of levels before I went through the whole game, so I did know it was there to begin with :P Oh and some random trivia, but it's fun to know: According to Steward Copeland in a recent interview, much of his music was actually used in the wrong levels in the final version of the Spyro games. Meaning my music theory back in Ice Cavern may have had some merit after all! :3 Sadly I haven't found any more full demos or betas :( I've been out of that business a while, the problem is that collectors won't give them away without a price tag (and in fact many of them won't bother looking through their insanely massive collections without a good deal to justify the effort), and the original owners don't want to ruin their working reputation, which is the main reason I can't release the beta (which I am indeed very lucky to have played through :) ) I hope some of them will unveil themselves though. Actually more exciting would be if Insomniac remade the Spyro games (somewhere in a distant plane of reality maybe... :( ) and added the stuff they cut. Which probably won't happen, but as Ted Price said in his own words never say never. Oh, on second thought there is another Spyro beta up on TH-cam. It's similar to this one, just slightly later, and I'm pretty sure the owner has said he's planning to release it, but that was a while ago and you'd probably need to ask him. It'd be awesome if he can! Can't quite remember his name on TH-cam but a search for Spyro Beta will probably bring it up?
Wow! Really?! Is that so?! Although I think the music suit well for the chosen levels. :) I might look it up sometime. Thanks for letting me know though. I know those rare betas are especially elusive and difficult to obtain. But hey, Crash is getting the remake, maybe, just maybe, Spyro might get one too in couple of years. However, the thing I'm keen on at the moment, if the sales of crash remastered will be high, there will maybe a chance for Crash Team Racing HD Remake. IMAGINE THAT!!!!! Playable Oxide, no graphical limitations, more playable character like Brio, multiplayer and many more!!! All we can do, is wait.... .... .. .wait... PS. If you find some delicious beta's, I sure will be there to check'em out. Alright, see yas! ;)
The interview is here, it's a pretty good read in general www.gamestm.co.uk/interviews/katsuhiro-harada-on-the-next-generation-of-tekken/ I'm with you in hoping that maybe just maybe Spyro gets his own remake. And yesss I wanna see CTR too. I bet they'll make the latter eventually! Duly noted. Seeya around :D
...Wow. =P Only thing I'd ask is whether the lives were in front of the portal or just put on the island after the portal was removed, but what the heck!
Hey there, dunno if you still have access to this proto, but while hacking away at some retail and demo spyros, I had a thought. I'd been playing around with the Level Value for each game and demo hoping to come across unused rooms much like the area in Dino Mines, but sadly insomniac seem to keep their public releases very tidy. The closest thing I came across is Level 99 in spyro 3, which is titled simply 'Empty' and as the name implied, has nothing in it.. So I was wondering, since this isn't exactly a public release, could there be unused levels in this proto? Have you done any additional research on stuff like that? Sorry if I'm bothering, I was just curious :p. You've already given the spyro hacking and research community, small as it is, so much, so thanks :D
Hey, yeah I had a look through the WAD files and models etc, didn't find anything though. Was hoping to find a trace of the famous 'Thigh Masters' but alas :)
I'll probably make more hacking videos, but at the moment I'm handling other productive-like stuff. There aren't any inaccessible levels in the Insomniac Spyro games, unfortunately. =( I think the only other game that had one was The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, but I never managed to completely enter it. I think it was just a grid-textured room with random objects in it, but one can't observe much as they fall through the floor to their inevitable doom. =P
Aw, I'll still be here, just not necessarily posting full walkthroughs for the time being. =) You're right about the flying by the way. I actually couldn't even flap my wings with the X button! It's really odd.
It sucks that its not on the internet, but hey, at least I got to see it :). If there was a full beta of this, then I'd definately expect that there is a full one of Spyro 2, I guess it just depends whether or not its going to ever really be available. Oh well, time will tell in the future :). Also, do you intend to do more hacking? I saw your other videos of the test levels in a Heroes Tail which were pretty awesome :D. Is there any of that in the other Spyro games, or a way to access them?
Hi; don't worry, my channel's not dead! =D Thanks for the support. =) I was always terrible at uploading videos regularly (if 'regularly' is anything more than twice a year =P), and it's kind of gotten worse since I started college. Don't worry - I still have lots of little hacks that I haven't shown yet, and I'm still actively asking around about betas - but it'll probably take a while!
Hey LX, on that question i asked, if you knew about the R&C 3 Beta, i just got an idea; What about a blog? For small things from betas that you have :D
I've actually thought of this, but need some more time. Maybe during the Summer if not too much stuff is going on. =) Most of the things I've found are more textual than video...o..rial so it's probably a good idea! ...Plus I really want to get some Ratchet stuff out! Been scared to do that on this channel because most people are probably expecting Spyro by now =P
2:04 metal door i guess it looks different than in final but its good to check that 2:07 oh yea they have no keyhole in them 3:32 there are parts of this level that are different (this is good example, look grass) 3:51 flying thief was going different path and he was flying slower i guess 4:32 wait wait two flying thiefs ?? O_o 4:36 lava seems to be different (both texture and color) 6:46 everything is much brighter than in final version especially this passage and room
Wow, I'd never thought of that. I don't think it's official but it's pretty interesting. About the different voices- that might mean that Insomniac had recorded the voices with the intention of making unique Machinist models for the dragons, but had run out of time before they started animating them. In other words, maybe the actors were told to play Machinist roles, but Insomniac changed their minds and re-used old models/names instead?
Oh, okay okay! Now the better question is.... how did he get a copy?! :o Hahahaha! (And thank you for your previous response and answering it so nicely! After I posted it, I was afraid that you might take it in an offensive way, which is not how it was intended! I thoroughly enjoyed watching!) :)
I'd imagine they'd have bent the story process a little bit sometime in early production. Something along the lines of adding insult to injury by clearing out all of Gnasty's Enemies AND taking all his loot before putting the final nail in his coffin. Plus, early in production they could have possibly not had a plan to urge players to complete the game 100% and thought that a level with such a huge amount of treasure to take would be a good reason. xD But your reason sounds better.
Hi Hybrid! Yeah, I'm totally into Spyro. What can I say? Long live the dragons! =D Uh, a few people have asked me that, but I'm a quiet person...this video might not have been filled with annotations otherwise. =) I'm not planning to get a mic at the moment, but maybe in the future, I don't know yet...
Wow - I've just seen it now; that's awesome! =D They even mentioned Hacc too. => It's too bad they didn't mention who discovered Stormy Ascent though, since he did that too. =P
6:51 painting with gnasty gnorc is gone O_o 7:15 i think they meant to explode altogether not seperatly but that could be me :P 7:42 well 2000/2000 congrats! :D 8:03 awwwwwww.... hahahahaha :P 8:24 well and dragon is missing you know 1/2 :) 9:25 i have a question. what is the next game you will tackle? perhaps another beta?
So, if Gnasty Gnorc boss level was called "Gnasty Place" and Gnasty's Loot was called "Boss" does that indicate a possibility that they made it it to where you'd go to Gnasty's Loot before going to fight him at some point in early production?
I'd like to see some more hacking stuff. At the moment, a group of people are translating Spyro 3 into other languages and they are also adding other things to the game, including a way to get to the distant pillar in Midnight Mountains. If that can be done, perhaps we can see some cool Spyro hacks in the future that involve changing large parts of the game, like adding ways to get to the secret rooms in Dino Mines and Fireworks Factory, or perhaps using the unused audio in Evening Lake?
Yup, there's actually an NTSC one and a PAL one. I bought both - even the NTSC one - eight years ago before I realised that my PS2 couldn't play NTSC discs. =P I did finally get the chance to play the NTSC one though!... six years later =P
Okay, basically, special circumstances (i.e. mostly luck =P) enabled me to have a digital copy of what is actually a beta/early prototype of the game. I had to keep it a secret, but eventually got permission to record it. I can't share the actual data, but the game's all recorded in video on my channel. =) I made the series because the differences between the beta and the final versoin are interesting. For example, in Part 8 (Crystal Flight/Blowhard), Blowhard's dragon is in a completely different place and it explains the meaning of the strange bridge-to-nowhere in the final game. There were a lot of other fun moments in the series so I might do a montage at some point too =)
Sorry. =( But if it's any help (...well, maybe not =P), it looks like that video is actually an even earlier beta, judging by the shade on the tents in Peace Keepers. I wouldn't know what kind of build it was though- whether it was a preview build or a testers' build. Either way, there's no guarantee it exists anymore. =( Rest assured, if I ever somehow obtained a Spyro beta that didn't have any issues with release, I'd definitely do it. =) Sharing the secrets is the best part of finding them!
Hi, I've actually already got it (and it's awesome =D), but my TH-cam policy is really to show things that haven't been shown before, so I'm afraid the beta as a whole doesn't really count since it's been released for a long time. That said though, there are a few small things I found on the beta that can't normally be seen. It's not really video material (more like screenshots), but I can definitely show it somewhere. Nothing important; just something funny that the programmers left in =P
excuse part of my last comment it's only in the NTSC version of the game that the bulls have blood on their horns very great series by the way i wish the other betas would show up
Ah, you had a demo disc. If you search around TH-cam for things like 'Spyro demo' you'll be able to find those differences you mentioned. Actually, the 'THIS IS IMPORTANT' thing was actually in this version as well; I didn't show it though since I figured the demo videos on TH-cam would show it off better. =)
Sorry, but it's a secret. If it weren't I would have just released it in the first place. =) But it's unreleased, so you won't find it on the Internet.
when u were naming the best parts of the series u said that there was blood on the horns of the bulls in town square, but that's in the final version too
Haunted Speedway is a hoax? That sucks, it would have been cool to see that :(. One could only hope Insomniac do, even if they dont :P. They should think about the money XD. Spyro must've been a huge money maker for them. And they're probably the only people that could really make a decent Spyro game, apart from Activision. Skylanders was kinda annoying to me. I have only really enjoyed A Heroes Tail and A New Beginning since the first 3. You have the Heroes Tail beta right? Is that a full one?
My theory is that BETA was only used for marketing. Like, for trailers and stuffs. Because Ive seen a trailer where some levelss were exactly like this BETA. Like, Night Flight has the opening theme song and the timer always 'bips'. The ice cavern has the dark hollow theme. So, just jst my theory.
well after further analysing you ended up with 14000 gems like in final version however stage that tends to be called *Gnasty's Cove* gave you only 381 gems which could mean that this beta perhaps was meant to be kinda a full preview i think and you will NEVER know what is in the last JAW, as a secret till final release. Making a note that they split the gems around in final version, good example is GNASTY'S PLACE which gave you 1000 GEMS. It is interesting though that Gnasty's loot had all gems
Huh, I was going to reply to your comment as soon as I got in my e-mail but it said it was deleted. Now it's here again. x.x Sorry. Either way, you're not going to like my answer. =P The recording of this video must have started at around the time the Peace Keepers music loops. In Part 3 you'll hear the same thing as the music loops. It's the same - sorry. =P
I wish somebody would find Crash 3 demo based like this one. Fully completed but far from the retail version for such things as little changes in details and etc. It was nice to see those differences again. Oh and by the way im feeling better after when I lost that Gnasty's Loot bet :P You win some you lose some they say heh.
I just watched the last few videos of this series a few days ago. The (one-year) nostalgia! =) Really wish we could do something like this again - but now betas are in higher demand and lower supply than they were a year or two ago. Spyro 3 or Spyro 2 - that's what I'd want to see the most! Glad to see you'e still doing alright, despite walking bare-foot for the last year. =P
LXShadow No bother :P By the way, it would be nice to see the roots of the spyro 3 as well. You know maybe perhaps that "beta" would contain the old midnight moutain layout and breakable cavern in fireworks factory. I less believe in that portal in dino mines since it wasn't finished, however it leaves me with guessing that you wouldn't be able to complete the game 100%. Just think, it was like with other games including this one. Gnorc Cove (which was twilight harbor normally) simply couldn't be completed without hacking or cheating device or Crash 1 and 2. In crash 1 we had level that "crashes" (no pun intended :P) which is believed that castle machinery is that vexious level. In addition, crash 2 has a level called Piston It Away which Locks-up for some bizzare reason right near the gem on the death routh, how suspicious. One thing's for sure, it's good to see the roots of "your" fav classic games. Be sure to have a look out for the other 2 games of this amazing spyro trilogy, because it would be great to acknowledge the differences within my fav games on PS1 :D. By the way, I haven't played Spyro 2 as much as Spyro 1 and 3, so I hope there is any late beta for "that" one :P PS. I think Spyro 3 would be tough to find if there is, because of that anti-piracy coding, which it made me never play that game till' I got a Real one. Stupid Paradox version made me replay the levels 50+ times and kill my save file once I confronted the Sorceress. Cheating b***h. :P I saw many videos about the "glitches" of them but I believe not ALL ... well. . yet. LOL I tell ya, dino mines with green sparx and kid's skill I was thrashed. Did ya played that phony copy as well??
eeeeooooops.... that is 0:01 to 0:23 where starts t ave a melody istead of that march feeling in the music :P By the way to check if its different check your Peace keepers world video and listen to the song (mainly the beggining) is a lot shorter i case if you didn't noticed::D
well actually that's not BAD it is something interesting so when part was meant to be longer later not at the beggining but then insomniac for some reason decided to put same length at the beggining as well. Well you learn something new every day :P Thanks for reply anyways ahaha :D
To be honest, I like the final more because it's not as evil-hard. =P But I think a mixture of the two would have been best. e.g, I liked the beta Tree Tops, and I found the beta Gnasty Gnorc to be more fun than the final! (Knocking all those enemies out like pawns while I chased him was satisfying!) To be honest, I think the final version would be more successful if it were released like that. It's more polished and refined, and when a game's well-polished, you know it's a good one. =)
Hi; boy I wish I could! I don't have any Spyro 2 or Spyro 3 betas, but I'm on the lookout. About the Dino Mines thing; I'm afraid that's a false rumour. I have no idea where it started, but it's not real: there aren't any Japanese versions or ISOs out there. I have a feeling the Dino Mines boss was never even created, due to time contraints. =(
Hello, first off I would like to say thank you for posting these videos and I really enjoyed watching them! But one thing I find ridiculous is that you refuse to give out information about how you got this version. If it truly is unreleased like you say, then you don't have to worry about other people getting a copy as well. This game is already 14 years old, and Insomniac games doesn't even have ownership anymore. Or is the reason you're not telling because you got it illegally or something?
Well, Insomniac is working mainly with Sony, and on very successful franchises too. Activision owns Spyro, and they're not just going to let go of him. It's already been 12 years since Insomniac made a Spyro game, too, and many of the original developers left long ago. It's no use. =( About AHT - er, I only have demo discs of it, unfortunately. This Spyro beta is the only one especially rare one I have access to. =X
Hi, yeah; whenever I get or make something that I think I could post. =P I'm always slow with TH-cam but never completely stop; so don't worry about it. =) Thanks for watching by the way!
Yeah, I can see that being true within the Sonic Hacking community as well- Some hackers have the capability to make extreme changes to the games, meaning that their hacks tend to be very popular. Well, let's hope that you somehow find another Spyro Beta, and that any leftover Betas haven't been lost internally by Insomniac, like SEGA did to the Sonic the Hedgehog Beta that they previously owned :P
I had a strange glitch in Spyro 3. I was trying to defeat the second boss and for no reason the music changed. I record the rest of the gameplay as a proof so nobody is telling me that i'm talking bullshit. Could you tell me that the fuck just happened? :D
Yep! While I don't know the cause(s), sometimes the game's music doesn't loop when it's supposed to and instead continues. Since the music tracks are stored back-to-back in the game data, this results in the next track starting. It's much the same thing that happens with Spyro 1's 'alternate themes'. =) This happens to me a lot while running Spyro 3 specifically in PCSX actually, and I'm not really sure why!
You know, a lot of developers would look at this beta and go, "Wow, this is pretty good, let's release it now!"
I'm glad that Insomniac went the extra mile and made sure that the game was extra polished!
+SebastianTheGreat Agreed! Fast dev speed and that extra polish has always been Insomniac's best qualities and it really showed in the Spyro series =)
That history run as the gem count rose was awesome.
I really enjoyed watching these! The differences are so interesting- great job!
A very very very enjoyable series. Loved the commentary and the suggested annotations. Well done. Hope to see another one of these
Well these videos were epic!
XP
*Okay, this miiight be a lie too... I actually did separate recordings of each level and edited each pair together... because I could only take so much pain =P
Anyways, hope you enjoy the now-archive series for the second time if you do watch it again!
(to that one bird: YES I *DID* HAVE TROUBLE WITH YOUR STUPID TROLLEY)
Well on a last note, random trivia! The best way to be safe from those frogs is not to look at them. That'll always save you a few lives; it sure as heck did for me ;)
My my! That was quite fun! I know it's weird to say, but I like you. You're funny. o3o
Thank you for uploading!
Awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. =) I know I had a lot of fun making them!
8:01 *I think Spyro caused a computer virus 😂*
alright i hope you will find beta spyro 2 or 3 :D
also i forgot shoot thanks for uploading these awesome spyro 1 beta videos :D
Thanks. That means a lot, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! =) Here's hoping we'll see something new in the future!
I loved the countdown to Spyro 3 near the end :P
awww its over D: haha it was fun, have a nice time at college and hope to see a vid soon :P
If I manage to get another beta at some point in the future, then that'll be the next game I'll tackle! I wish I knew what and when, but I don't know yet. All I do know is that they're out there somewhere!
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the series. =)
The main concern wasn't so much about Insomniac (or Activision and Sony today), but the owner of the beta. Before sharing a copy, he asked that I keep the beta off the Internet. Our share was something of a trade service, too, so it wasn't given to me specifically for no reason. =)
I understand why you're disappointed at that (who wouldn't be?), but that's how it is for now. I'm just glad I got permission to share this much - and in such a fun way too!
The rockets around 5:10 are standing straight-up. They're tilted in the final version like normal rockets.
I'm surprised that this beta version is still not documented in The Cutting Room Floor; they only have the tabloid demo documented!
I was wondering is there is a chance for you to receive the next 2 Spyro ps1 games and do a beta gameplay of them?
Hey LXShadow! I got a bit if a surprise today as you were mentioned in the new didyouknowgaming video, congratulations dood! xD
I'm glad you enjoyed it! =D Thanks for watching too!
Or maybe a bit of hacking!
what is that small pink square on the key at 2:27 ?
What differences were there in the Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night beta?
I used a free program called 'Debut Video Capture', or something much like that. It's not optimised for games, but it's free and did the job!
I used DivX on the high-performance settings as the codec. It's the only one that gave recorded in HD at full frame rate on my PC. =)
Hey, will you do the Ratchet and Clank : Up your Arsenal beta? 1108? It can be found on the iso zone, and it's not a torrent! But it's split into two parts, and you can't open one part with winRar, you have to merge the files together. :D
I have a question: what program do you use to record? and are you doing it on Fullscreen or windows mode?
Hi, I used Debut Video Capture for this video when it was freeware. However, I think it's gone shareware since then, so now I'd recommend Open Broadcaster Software. =) I used fullscreen mode in 720p for this video.
Did you use a joystick or the keyboard to play this? (Or did you find a way to hook up one of the ol' PS1 controllers?)
This is the only one I have and likely the only one I ever will as I'm no longer hunting down this kind of thing ^^
- same as above :)
- as I haven't been able to get permission to release it, there are no plans.
.
Thanks for the quick reply! I really appreciate it! Do you ever plan to go back and datamine this more thoroughly?
@@yiris10001 No immediate plans so far, but I'll probably get round it to sometime :) if I find anything therell be a video about it!
It doesn't show the eggs next to the levels in the Inventory!
Although, my english back then suuu..uuucked! LMAO XD
Darn it really has been that long. We're all old now :P
Yeah it was fun!
Kinda like Crash Bash and Oxide Ride Part 1 and 2.
You've found any other particularly rare and elusive early demo discs like that one?! It would be nice to dig in such a tasty delicious treat once again. ;D
PS. You were very lucky to enjoy a trip of this demo. ;D
I envy you haha! (I love beta versions of the old games so much)
Yeah I was surprised when I found it as well. That said I think I did a sneak peek of levels before I went through the whole game, so I did know it was there to begin with :P
Oh and some random trivia, but it's fun to know: According to Steward Copeland in a recent interview, much of his music was actually used in the wrong levels in the final version of the Spyro games. Meaning my music theory back in Ice Cavern may have had some merit after all! :3
Sadly I haven't found any more full demos or betas :( I've been out of that business a while, the problem is that collectors won't give them away without a price tag (and in fact many of them won't bother looking through their insanely massive collections without a good deal to justify the effort), and the original owners don't want to ruin their working reputation, which is the main reason I can't release the beta (which I am indeed very lucky to have played through :) )
I hope some of them will unveil themselves though.
I might look it up sometime.
Alright, see yas! ;)
The interview is here, it's a pretty good read in general www.gamestm.co.uk/interviews/katsuhiro-harada-on-the-next-generation-of-tekken/
I'm with you in hoping that maybe just maybe Spyro gets his own remake. And yesss I wanna see CTR too. I bet they'll make the latter eventually!
Duly noted. Seeya around :D
...Wow. =P
Only thing I'd ask is whether the lives were in front of the portal or just put on the island after the portal was removed, but what the heck!
@@LXShadowsplosion Ah that's a shame, but thanks for replying! That's one less thing to wonder about :p
You're right about the flying by the way.
How would one obtain the beta version of Spyro the Dragon.
e bay
I actually found out that you can't, and that he got it from someone that he had to get permission to post it on TH-cam.
Well, if you want to do Ratchet & Clank stuff on this channel, either announce it, or just do it! :)
Could you do the Crash Bandicoot Beta now?
2:04 metal door i guess it looks different than in final but its good to check that
2:07 oh yea they have no keyhole in them
3:32 there are parts of this level that are different (this is good example, look grass)
3:51 flying thief was going different path and he was flying slower i guess
4:32 wait wait two flying thiefs ?? O_o
4:36 lava seems to be different (both texture and color)
6:46 everything is much brighter than in final version especially this passage and room
Uh, a few people have asked me that, but I'm a quiet person...this video might not have been filled with annotations otherwise. =) I'm not planning to get a mic at the moment, but maybe in the future, I don't know yet...
guy who ate his shoe better have brought ketchup!
Wow - I've just seen it now; that's awesome! =D They even mentioned Hacc too. => It's too bad they didn't mention who discovered Stormy Ascent though, since he did that too. =P
6:51 painting with gnasty gnorc is gone O_o
7:15 i think they meant to explode altogether not seperatly but that could be me :P
7:42 well 2000/2000 congrats! :D
8:03 awwwwwww.... hahahahaha :P
8:24 well and dragon is missing you know 1/2 :)
9:25 i have a question. what is the next game you will tackle? perhaps another beta?
Oh also, how did you get the beta version of Spyro the dragon? O.o?
Ah, I knew I saw the blood in other videos; but yeah, it's definitely not in the PAL version.
As for other betas, maybe in the future. =)
So, if Gnasty Gnorc boss level was called "Gnasty Place" and Gnasty's Loot was called "Boss" does that indicate a possibility that they made it it to where you'd go to Gnasty's Loot before going to fight him at some point in early production?
Where’s the credits?
I'd like to see some more hacking stuff. At the moment, a group of people are translating Spyro 3 into other languages and they are also adding other things to the game, including a way to get to the distant pillar in Midnight Mountains. If that can be done, perhaps we can see some cool Spyro hacks in the future that involve changing large parts of the game, like adding ways to get to the secret rooms in Dino Mines and Fireworks Factory, or perhaps using the unused audio in Evening Lake?
So, you had 12000 gems at level start, did you find missing 19 gems from Gnorc Cove?
+MrChaomen IIRC, that was the hack I used to open the door to the level. ;)
7:35
Thats exactly what I was thinking while playing at this part. XD
RIP TH-cam annotations.
What are you going to do next LX?
I don't know - but well-spotted!
Yup, there's actually an NTSC one and a PAL one. I bought both - even the NTSC one - eight years ago before I realised that my PS2 couldn't play NTSC discs. =P
I did finally get the chance to play the NTSC one though!... six years later =P
I've just clicked on this and I am puzzled at it's purpose. Not hating, I mean, I just don't get what's going on? Beta?
Okay, basically, special circumstances (i.e. mostly luck =P) enabled me to have a digital copy of what is actually a beta/early prototype of the game. I had to keep it a secret, but eventually got permission to record it. I can't share the actual data, but the game's all recorded in video on my channel. =)
I made the series because the differences between the beta and the final versoin are interesting.
Rest assured, if I ever somehow obtained a Spyro beta that didn't have any issues with release, I'd definitely do it.
Nothing important; just something funny that the programmers left in =P
excuse part of my last comment it's only in the NTSC version of the game that the bulls have blood on their horns very great series by the way i wish the other betas would show up
Amazing series :)
I'm not sure yet. Looking for betas; maybe posting hacks on occasion in the meantime? Don't know really!
when u were naming the best parts of the series u said that there was blood on the horns of the bulls in town square, but that's in the final version too
Haunted Speedway is a hoax?
So, just jst my theory.
yayy I hope you'll put other videos =3
That's awesome.
To bad they didn't make Spyro fly like that in Gnasty's Loot in the game we have now...
well after further analysing you ended up with 14000 gems like in final version however stage that tends to be called *Gnasty's Cove* gave you only 381 gems which could mean that this beta perhaps was meant to be kinda a full preview i think and you will NEVER know what is in the last JAW, as a secret till final release.
Lol! I'm sure Insomniac would have done that, had they known that some random 4-year-old in England would reap the loot 14 years in the future! =P
I wish somebody would find Crash 3 demo based like this one. Fully completed but far from the retail version for such things as little changes in details and etc.
It was nice to see those differences again.
Oh and by the way im feeling better after when I lost that Gnasty's Loot bet :P
You win some you lose some they say heh.
LXShadow
No bother :P
By the way, it would be nice to see the roots of the spyro 3 as well.
By the way, I haven't played Spyro 2 as much as Spyro 1 and 3, so I hope there is any late beta for "that" one :P
PS. I think Spyro 3 would be tough to find if there is, because of that anti-piracy coding, which it made me never play that game till' I got a Real one.
Stupid Paradox version made me replay the levels 50+ times and kill my save file once I confronted the Sorceress. Cheating b***h. :P
I saw many videos about the "glitches" of them but I believe not ALL ... well. . yet. LOL I tell ya, dino mines with green sparx and kid's skill I was thrashed.
Did ya played that phony copy as well??
eeeeooooops.... that is 0:01 to 0:23 where starts t ave a melody istead of that march
feeling in the music :P By the way to check if its different check your Peace keepers world video and listen to the song (mainly the beggining) is a lot shorter i case if you didn't noticed::D
well actually that's not BAD it is something interesting so when part was meant to be longer later not at the beggining but then insomniac for some reason decided to put same length at the beggining as well.
Well you learn something new every day :P
Thanks for reply anyways ahaha :D

Wall texture is also different.
(Compare it to final)
To be honest, I like the final more because it's not as evil-hard. =P But I think a mixture of the two would have been best. e.g, I liked the beta Tree Tops, and I found the beta Gnasty Gnorc to be more fun than the final! (Knocking all those enemies out like pawns while I chased him was satisfying!)
To be honest, I think the final version would be more successful if it were released like that.
About AHT - er, I only have demo discs of it, unfortunately. This Spyro beta is the only one especially rare one I have access to. =X
Hi, yeah; whenever I get or make something that I think I could post. =P I'm always slow with TH-cam but never completely stop; so don't worry about it. =)
Thanks for watching by the way!
thx for at least showing us the proto instead of completely vanishing with it like collectors often do
Ok! But it would be more cool if you made a let's play of the beta :D
This happens to me a lot while running Spyro 3 specifically in PCSX actually, and I'm not really sure why!
There should be more treasure in the final room.
atleast the music is the best one in this game imo :)
