and it took a year to make it instinct so-
Can you please upload your mom playing gu zheng. Im a beginner and there's a few vids of guzheng players out there and teaches this instrument particularly. Its kinda underrated but the sound is heavenly.
Brett's got the technique, Eddy's got the memory to remember the melody, and together, they make... THE AVERAGE OKEY STUDENT OF GUZHENG
This being their first time makes it impressive as fuck.
YES
Ling ling already master it
@@KRLS-Anknown It's not their first time playing an instrument though. Hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, sense of rhythm and understanding of music are transferable to certain extent, so people with musical background always have a head start when learning new instruments.
@@tiihtu2507 I'd say learning from scratch and learning another instrument are difficult in different ways. Trying to relearn and overwrite your habits and muscle memory is harder imo. Knew a guy that switched to cello and it took him a couple of years to stop using his violin techniques completely. I also tried playing a bit for fun and it just felt so strange and foreign. It's hard to ignore how wrong it felt to me. When you first start learning, it feels awkward and clumsy but that goes away with practice. With trying another instrument, your body can (not everyone ofc) physically reject the playing style and methods, especially on a similar instrument. If I had to say, it's like trying to play with your less dominant hand. It's difficult.

Quarter tones: im about to end this whole mans career

@@ttttg5302 No, not necessarily. It’s a gradient. There’s a specificity of recognition that varies by person. Perfect pitch isn’t defined as recognizing all pitches to any degree. Could they recognize an eighth tone? Sixteenth? The average person with perfect pitch probably couldn’t work with quarter notes unless somewhat trained, they’d just recognize it as an out-of-tune key most likely and not recognize its relation to the notes above and below.

I thought those were kotos at first! Kotos are Japanese, but they are nearly identical. Apparently the only major difference is the string material, with the Guzheng using metal strings while the koto uses silk, or a certain kind of plastic strings. Almost everything else, from the string length to the tuning method is the same, and the playing method seem to be the same as well, to the point where a Koto player could easily play a Guzheng and vice versa. The information I did find on the koto did say that it originated in China, so it seems to me like the Koto was a decendent of the Guzheng.
Ohhhh i thought it was koto too lol i was gonna ask it in the comments but i see yours, thankss haha
Rainier Arts it could also be mistaken for the Korean one too , it’s called Gayageum (가야금)
My understanding is that the guzheng was originally Chinese and the Vietnamese (dan tranh), Japanese (koto) and Korean (kayageum) ones are descendants of it.
The tunings/scales are a bit different, and playing techniques are also different because of the different types of finger picks.
As for tuning method, I've been told that you need trained masters to tune a koto because it's apparently complicated. Whereas with the guzheng and dan tranh you can do it yourself.
The kanji (chinese character) of koto is literally 箏, which is pronounced "zheng" in mandarin chinese. "Gu" means ancient/old. So yeah, koto is a decendent of the Guzheng.
Im a Guzheng player and no, koto is very different. While yes they are both zithers, koto has a completely different playing style, number of strings, and even the shape of the instrument is different. The most major thing is the Chinese music scale vs the Japanese music scale, which contain completely different notes. While yes, i would be able to pluck strings properly, even the finger picks are different in shape and i would still need a long time to learn, as it is intrinsically a different instrument altogether

It happens way more often than you think haha
Eddy’s nail pick: Y E E T
I picked up the guzheng after watching this video, look at where I am now guys! 🥹
After 2 years, I’m studying this song for my level 7 test. Yay me!
Super cool episode! Lemme think. It would be very iNtErEsTiNg to see TwoSet attempt to learn how to play the harp. That would be super awesome to see. Thanks for sharing this video. Special thanks to (Indra) Mary for her valuable time and generously sharing her wisdom of the Guzheng. And as always, thank you BAE (Brett and Eddy) for being so committed to sharing your experiences with the global classical music community that the two of you have created. Take care and stay healthy. Love y'all. (Smiles and big hugs)
I instantly knew that the teacher's from Singapore just by listening to her accent!
Yes
Me too! It's either a Singaporean or a Malaysian.
They're using their stay in Singapore well. 😊
.
When she says 'la' yu know shes used to it
(No offence Singaporeans)
YES
Brett & Eddy: Trying to play Guzheng
Brett & Eddy's nails: I must go my people need me
😂😂😂😂
It's like an horizontal harp! Beautiful! I like the sound!
That "You better, you nOoo"
Eddy has left the group 🤣
As a former guzheng player in secondary sch and having performed 战台风, this is very very relatable hahaha
here’s some tips:
1. to fix your ‘bad posture’, sit straight occupying 1/3 of the chair. you won’t be able to relax so you definitely won’t slouch or extend your feet (lol)
2. when your left hand is not in use, rest it on the un-pitched strings; you’ll be able to press it immediately for fa/ti
3. to prevent the ‘zzzt’ noise heard btwn notes (due to the pick), make sure your next pick movement is firm and swift like the coursing river 💪🏻 don’t hesitate. if you do, the ‘zzzt’ will be very obvious.
4. DONT WORRY ABOUT PICKS FLYING OFF OR YOUR HANDS GETTING STUCK IN THE STRINGS IT HAPPENS ALLLL THE TIME. happened to my friends, once, her pick flew out of the practice room. ikr.
5. WHAT SI THIS UNREALISTIC PRACTICE WE PRACTICE WITH THE MUSIC SCORE WHATISTHIS WHY IS THIS THR NO SHEET THR AINT EVEN THE 1235 STRIP AT THE SIDE ASDHSJSJD no wonder brett couldnt remember lmao
Also here’s a full vid of 战台风 at normal speed: th-cam.com/video/ORH7wi1tAbY/w-d-xo.html
EDIT: asfddjsk I JUST REALISED HER SURNAME IS CHEN NOWONDER SHE LOOK SO FAMILIAR 陈老师 js that u???
The posture one is what we did for flute too
I would love to see a funny video exaggerating things that happen during practice (such as picks flying off). Or like a ‘Just Guzheng Player things’ Video or something.
I firstly though that the "bad posture" thing is only because they are tall...
I love the advice here it’s great lol, but I couldn’t focus after the Mulan reference😂
Good tips, especially about the posture. I'm a real slouch!
I stick on the picks real tight, so have never had them fly off. They do get stuck in the strings on occasion though, especially the left hand ones!
i've been playing guzheng for 7 years and it feels wonderful to have my instrument be recognised on this channel. and also recognise the music being played, finally.
and yes i have zero motivation to practice because of those damn finger picks
@@meganwang7115 why is this so me hahahhaah
Hi Megan, here is music from my high school days being performed on a similar instrument. I like it very much. TH-cam video: The Doors- Riders On The Storm Gayageum ver. by Luna
@@meganwang7115 honestly me too bro 😳
me too! i learnt guzheng more than 10 years ago but i stopped for a couple of years before starting again 2 years ago. hence, i suck at it.
thank you for giving all your guzheng-playing viewers another opportunity to laugh at you 🥰 great video!
i love how she tries to help you guys when you had your solos.
