There are some out there, though! I’m proud to say that I am in a similar youth orchestra with the same age range that sounds like this (and I say this because we played the same exact piece and I know how to compare lol). We have fewer members, but a good conductor and instructor makes a huge difference too.
I think philharmonic youth is supposed to be one of the best youth orchestra in the county

It is so interesting how the orchestra starts to feel unconfident when the conductor is unconfident. ;) Very interesting that you can hear it in the music. And this is what conducting is about. Giving the orchestra confidence, bringing the feeling to them of the piece ... so interesting.
Literally you get everything from the conductor. I had a band director who brought it all to our band practices for marching band, and by doing so you feel compelled to also give it your all. I remember the first time this particular conductor conducted our piece and afterwards everyone was exhausted and I swear the room had the after echo of how loud it was. It was so good!😊 on the other hand I've been in a room with a conductor who was pretty weak, for lack of a better way to say it, and people got lost, came in on the wrong parts, no dynamics. To an audience member it may seem like the person is just waving their hands but their job is so important! I admire conductors that can get their all from their musicians.
Yeah It's true! Most people don't actually recognise the differences that different conductors do to a band or orchestra. I had a band director one time and he was a really old conductor, but really funny and joking, so we played really well with all the lighthearted pieces. My other conductor was also a fun guy (again really old), but was a brass player (a euphonium and a trombone so he was a bit of a bully but a fun bully that everyone liked) so we played passionate pieces really well. We usually play the same pieces sort of as a throwback and even with the same piece we could see a huge difference!

If I'm not wrong (please correct me if otherwise), the conductor is the glue of the orchestra. Keeps things together. And if that glue is weak, the orchestra is also weak? Is it like this usually?
Right, my band director from day 1 told us she didn’t want to be there. So the band sounded terrible. We’ve actually regressed as she’s continued her rant on her dislike of directing.
The conductor of this orchestra is FANTASTIC. I say this as a conductor myself: he communicates well with the kids in the orchestra, his gesture is effective, and his pedagogy of conducting to Brett and Eddy was amazing - just what they needed at the time, and not overwhelming. What an amazing educator on multiple levels!! Kudos to Brett and Eddy for being vulnerable and trying out something new in the music world. I love this channel so much!!!
I have a question for you : do you find it more difficult to conduct with a mask on ?
For example, does it impair your peripheral vision, or do you have to use your hands and/or your whole body more than before to convey what you want, since the musicians can't see your facial expressions ?

@@yanlim18 Lots of theory work and good understanding. It takes a long time to memorise and plan out to conduct a piece...in fact the conductor in this video would spend hours analysing the full score even on the plane until he falls asleep

Oh my god, this is my (former) youth orchestra. I was surprised to see my violin teacher Luo Wei here! I joined them in my teens when they first started out and its nice to see how well the youth orchestra has grown since :)

You have to learn an instrument when you're studying to become a conductor. At the very least you need to play the piano because you have to work through scores.

This is not related to the vid but I just want to thank Eddy & Brett for giving me a free online music course lol. Earlier we had an exam & a part of that exam contains classical music questions that are 91.96353% not known by non-musical students (especially that I study science) and I'm so sure I aced it through my twoset knowledge. Don't mind me, I'm just flexing the fact that I'm part of TwoSet Academy.

New violinist here... what grade are your second violins? I’m wondering what to aim for to join my local youth orchestra
Something between grade 3 and 5 I think, but I guess that differs from orchestra to orchestra. Give it a try though, when I (cellist) joined my orchestra I learned a lot just by giving my best and trying as hard as I could and I made huge progress!

In my orchestra, ppl are usually like 14-17, so I guess it’s fine. But I’m 12 :P
I’m a bit smaller and the teens are so tall, they block my view of the conductor :P

I felt the pressure when I conducted because Club president was late for rehearsal.
And we were playing wood wind instruments ~ Palchabel Canon D. I know it's lame but when 99% of us are sports athletes, we gotta do with what we have.
With the amount of goofy videos these make, I sometimes forget how talented they actually are!
Eddie's first moments conducting actually made me cry. He had such a connection with the emotion of the piece, and conveyed that to the players.
I so agree. He has more ease with his emotions, it seems… to “go there” not just with his violin but with words, body, etc. He would make a great conductor actually!! He’s so passionate about the music and is, like the actual conductor, good with words. He would do quite well. When I was watching him in the background when Brett was conducting, I could already tell he was going to do great with it

The kids philharmonic is decided into three orchestras. Seed, junior and senior. Brett and Eddy here are with the senior orchestra and I must admit that today kids look older than they are.
No one in the orchestra is above 15 actually lmao
there's some adults there in the "kids" group.
@@Karmeleon118 Those are the instructors...since most people there are actually kids, it can be hard on the conductor to manage everyone if there aren't any instructors helping out with a specific section. It helps with sectionals as well. But none of them are actual "members"

What I like about Brett and Eddy is that they go out of their way to experience different aspects of music careers: music store workers, conductors, trying out different instruments, etc. When they go and learn, they humble themselves and have fun instead of being like, "I know more about music, so you guys need to follow me!"

@@deedit4666 They don't necessarily have to tell him he sucks. The important part is that he goes to different places, be humble, and learn how to do the unique dishes, which is what he did before the pandemic.
Although they r violinists and part of the string family, I feel like they should experience some more of the other families. Don’t get me wrong, I like that they experience many different things within the string family, but I wish they would do more brass and percussion stuff like marching band or drumline. It’ll be interesting to hear a classical musicians perspective on them.

Everybody is complimenting the kid next to Brett- not only for looking like young him, but also for playing good. I feel kinda bad for the one in between Brett and Eddy!!! He, too, played amazing and failed to choke under pressure. Beautiful performance(s). :)
The kids from the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra are all so talented!!!! And Brett and Eddy really grew a larger appreciation for conductors, and even learned how to conduct properly!!!!!

Eddy's first attempt I thought was his best. He went with his instincts and emotions and didn't start second-guessing everything. It seemed to actually go downhill from there and he was too much in his head. Eddy has natural conducting skills. I've noticed it in other vids.

@@Noone-ue6xo no. Conducting is about rhythm and dynamics, and directing a group of people to play that rhythm and those dynamics on your cue. More or less anyway...

No one as the other comment said, pitch isn’t that important when live conducting if the members already know their notes and you aren’t the everyday teacher helping them with ensemble intonation. To be ‘natural’ it’s more important to have great familiarity with the piece and know where you want to take it. The gestures will follow.

the actual conductor of this orchestra (which sounds AMAAAAAAAAAZZZZIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGG!!!!) is really good with kids, really patient and a great comunicator. The way he explained to Brett and Eddy all the things that were needed, very didactic... And the final four playing together...wow! that sounded sooo good!
really shines a light on how difficult being a conductor really is. you decide what the orchestra sounds and feels like, and you have to communicate it in a way that anybody can understand.
and bravo to that youth orchestra. bra-fricking-vo. i could not take my focus off of this video just because their playing was so good. very talented and hard working youths that deserve great praise

I’m sure no one will read this, but- Musical instruments are basically unusual in my home town and let me tell you why. So, I brought my violin to school today(which is an ordinary school(i’m in my last year)) to compare my violin with a Youth Fusion violin from school. During lunch, i went on a school bus and i noticed all the younger kids eyes were on me, i heard most of them mentioning “guitar” and one of the kids even asked me if i could buy them a gun. Then i sat next to a curious kid who kept asking me if it’s a guitar until i got out! Lol. It was sacrilegious, annoying and wild.

It's not that sacriligeous. For example, the kids I work with have no idea about what the number of strings for a standard guitar is. Not even for violins. Let's face it, the fact about music today is that you have to have someone in your family that's musically educated in order to get an approximate idea about instruments in general. I play bass clarinet in a community band. We are all adults ranging from 18-70+ years old. We did this concert once where we played for people with mental disabilities. And this one boy wanted to be a conductor. He was 18. He played a video game where you could conduct a band. It was his dream to conduct a band. We were playing Christmas music and we picked an easy song that if things went south we could play without being conducted. He did pretty good ✌🏻 He was so excited and so happy that he got to conduct a band and if felt good to make his dream come true.

It is! But extremely nerve racking because you always think you’re the worst(which i am in my orchestra) but it’s really fun, and you play a lot of fun pieces :)
When they started playing the final movement, I really felt like I was a parent watching their children play. Proud and Happy. It was so good.
As conductors, we always have to anticipate, be at least a beat or more ahead of the orchestra. Otherwise you are not giving information that the musicians can use, you are sort of vibing with them
You make a good point but 'a beat or more' isn't always necessary. It can also come down to the individual conductor; I've played with some who are many beats ahead and some who are hardly ahead at all, and it usually doesn't determine the quality of their conducting
@@Max-jf5vu of course, the quality is determined by soo many factors. Specially cause a lot if not most of a conductor’s work happens in rehearsal and if everything is well set up, then a professional orchestra may not need that much information on the go at the concert ;)
It also may depend on how fast each person can process the conducting, if they need a heads up a measure before, or 3 measures before, depends on each section. Conducting seems complicated.
@@applepeachbirdduckmaster801 As a conductor I can confirm, yes it is complicated 🥴. But I recently made a video about conducting where I make the point that I don’t think being a conductor is harder than say being a surgeon; it’s all relative :)
It is a completely different mindset. I played in a small orchestra and we were rehearsing an arrangement I had written myself, the conductor had to leave for a while and asked me to conduct. So, I knew the score perfectly well, it was entertainment music (much easier) and I still screwed up completely. Just the thing with keeping the pulse with one hand and signalling (cue, hush, louder..) with the other was enough to overwhelm me.

Honestly I feel like both Brett and Eddy would make great conductors! Eddy would be the kind of conductor to be openly passionate about it with great flourishing gestures, where he has his eyes closed but can still call specific people out on their playing, and Brett would be the kind where he's very focused on the piece while keeping the tempo, and let's it get slightly too far past when multiple people have messed up so that you can play longer without the conductor interrupting, but then when everyone does eventually get lost, he can go through each mistake and discuss what they could have done better!

I appreciate that the real conductor is both really amused and patient/serious. Like, he's having fun, making it fun and also makes sure that they actually learn how to do it.
I haven't played in an orchestra. I always knew that conducting is harder than it looks but I found it really interesting to see how much work and effort and experience it actually takes. Made me respect conductors even more ^-^

I've never played in an orchestra either it's mostly solos and private concerts since I take lessons with a private teacher and I know that pianos aren't really always included in orchestras unless they're the leading instrument so that really bums me out... And watching people like Brett and Eddy who put so much emotion and effort into their instruments makes me feel so happy to see fellow musicians that are so in touch and connected with their community and instrument
He has memorized the score and can see it clearly in his mind's eye, every instrument's part flowing in near perfect synchronization with the tempo that comes out of him. Thus, he has the mental bandwidth and processing power to use gestures and command his physical body to display what he suggests the orchestra do during the performance. This memorization of the entire musical score liberates him to become a teacher and instructor and conductor. He's a fine conductor.
They did a good job for their first times! Reading a score, keeping track of all the parts, making eye contact with all of the right sections and the proper people in those sections, trying to anticipate beats, it's so difficult. And they took constructive criticism well and did what they could to try and learn and get better. Awesome video guys!
I just admire how Brett surfs through out-of-his-confort-zone challenges. He's always really cool about it, kind and funny, even if he's really nervous about it. And how Eddy is extra because he goes big, he plays (and conducts) wholeheartedly. I really like these boys.

The Vivaldi at the end actually made me tear up - it was so powerful and vibrant, all orange and gold. I love their playing so much, and the other two soloists were brilliant as well! I rarely get chills/tear up during music, but this piece just hit me. Way to go!

Wow. This conductor is amazing. After years of playing (but before college), no music teacher I've had has ever explained the signals of a conductor and we were just made to primarily play alone with our scores.
I just realized how much difference the conductor makes on an orchestra especially when Eddy was conducting it sounded so different from their own conductor

@@Noone-ue6xo you can actually notice when eddy conducts and the conductor asks him “is this what you want?” and eddy says “its not what i had in mind” you can actually hear the difference with Eddy it was much slower and the cellos and double basses entered very slowly it sounded reluctant and it was slightly dragging it was really because of his gestures while the Conductor was more snappy and everyone entered at the right time (this is no shade on Eddy he did amazing)

The moral of the video: Respect the conductors, this is a hard job. I can relate to strict conductors because my conductors are strict af, but we still have to respect them. Being a conductor isn’t easy, so practice and make your conductors proud.

This was super eye opening, I never thought too hard about the nuances of what makes a good conductor. Also now I understand why my conductors would often launch into lecture mode for 20 minutes to talk about the history and story behind the piece 😂
