Your Yoga Teacher Might Be Wrong ❌ Learn Facts About Shoulder Girdle and Biomechanics

  • Having a degree in physiotherapy, I realized that all yoga teachers that I had so far, will often say to lift our hand above our head but draw the shoulder blade down.
➡️ I spoke to different therapists and researched different peer reviews about biomechanics of our shoulders and compiled the most important information.
In this video, I am going to explain why your yoga teacher is wrong to tell you to draw your shoulder down.
When you move your shoulder blades down the whole time, it will tamper with your shoulder’s delicate parts.
➡️ Not every yoga teacher knows this and it is important to learn the specifics of your shoulder girdle to protect yourself and prevent injury in the long run.
With my medical background, I will teach you some basic anatomy that you need to know while doing yoga.
If you love learning about your body then I have made two anatomy freebies for you. One is a full-hour workshop on knee pain. As a bonus, if you sign up you'll also receive a free bootie building class.

Amazing content! I’ve always said “when you change a lightbulb above your head, you don’t pull your shoulder down” 🤦🏾‍♂️

Wow! This has been an unanswered question for me until today! I am a yoga student and I have been told to "stabilize" my shoulders all the time and I was feeling that my body was telling me that wasn't the better idea, now everything is SO CLEAR! Thanks a lot for the explanation!

Hi. Thanks for the video. You confirm that my belief - that shoulders are not meant to be kept down in various poses - is correct. Even when we think of simple human actions - like when we giggle - lifting shoulders up a bit is a natural thing to do.

hi celest! you are my ultimate everday inspiration. thats not the first time I leave a comment here. I would like to ask you to make a video about the most effective ways to improve stretching because I can see that I hit plateau in my practice and don't know what to do anymore

This is very interesting! I'm an instructor and I've been told time and time again (in various environments) to "draw the shoulders down". I even do it in my own home practice. This sheds a whole new light on this situation. Thank you so much for bringing this forward! I will definitely research myself, but it makes total sense. Thanks for sharing Celest! Much love! Namaste!

Would you say the same thinking holds true in a down dog? As we "push the mat away", I tell my students "wrap the armpits toward each other". That's not so much pull down as it is engaging/ wrapping, but thought I'd ask your opinion! =^)

Fantastic. Great this information is being understood and shared in the yoga community. Please could you make a similar video on biomechanics of lumbar spine and SI joint in relation to back bends and twists. Thanks Celest.

Celeste, thank you so much for another amazing video - you explain something really quite technical and complex super clearly and helpfully; you're one of very few yoga teachers who understands the physiology as well as the physicality and spirituality of practice.. Very useful to know and apply (I always curve my back up in plank now and can feel the benefit / strengthening effect). Your class on Thursday was the last class I did in chronic butt pain; after 2.5 years tomorrow I have cortisone injections in my f*cked up piriformis.. So hopefully next time I see you, I'll be a new woman! Thank you for all your guidance and insight. Big love to you lovely ❤️🙏
