For me, there is no question on "preference" for quilting. I will do it myself, on a domestic machine, because I would not be able to afford to do it any other way. My great grandmother did the quilting by hand....and she made a LOT of quilts. No whining allowed from me when I have so much more at my disposal than she ever did.
That's amazing I just put up my old quilting frames. I'm going to see if I can do more by hand. Since I retired $200 a quilt is minimal and I can't afford it. Hand quilting it is.
My grandmother, g-gma, great aunts etc did hand cutting, piecing, quilting, and sewing. My grandfather made a quilting frame that I remember having saw horses on each end. It was a family affair. I remember MomMom teaching me a little bit of each and explaining different processes😊. Fond memories.. No treasured... memories 🤍 Later in life she did use the sewing machine some-why not? Quick tip. If you start at center of quilt and work in a quadrant, then go back to center, do next quadrant, then repeat for the other two quadrants. So don’t have to struggle with the quilt as much and you never have a lot of bulk under the machine.
This video is so encouraging. I have the Juki machine I use for straight-line sewing. I am very intimidated by free-motion quilting. I cannot afford to send my quilts out for long arm quilting. I have always quilted with curved pins and straight lines on my Singer Confidence Quilter machine. I am definitely going to give this a try on my Juki...gloves and all. Thank you for an amazingly encouraging video. I will likely be referring back to it. Right now, I am going to check out your binding video. I have always wrapped the backing around, folded it over, and sewed it down for the binding.
When I put the 'sandwich' together, I strip my spare queen bed down to the silky top mattress. That is what I use to lay it out and I use HUGE safety pins every 5-6". This works for me and I'm able to pin easily and I don't like the spray. But whatever works for you. I enjoy your videos.

I decided to use a table runner last week that I pieced from a clearance charm pack of Christmas fabrics and learned lots from that project. I haven't yet tried cheater fabric but have pieced 4 patch and 9 patch blocks for practicing fmq.
Great video. I also prefer to quilt my own. I’m a new quilter and I would rather put my money into the fabric. Someday, if I my a King size quilt for my bed, I would love to send that quilt out, though.

I feel that if you piece the top of your quilt only and have someone else quilt it, you are a “piecer”, not a quilter. It means so much more when YOU make the quilt from start to finish.
Yes it is toxic and you should only use it outside or in a very well ventilated area. I think many also wear at least a mask if not a respirator. If you do all your quilts with this spray baste indoors you're risking respiratory problems over time.
First time free motion quilting and it is fun however even though using a silicon mat I had trouble moving the quilt smoothly. Felt heavy. Any hints appreciated.
Anything yiu can do to support the weight of your quilt will help. J keep most of it on the table and I open the drawers next to me to support anything hanging to the left. But mostly I hold it up off my lap. I've seen contraptions to hold the weight even above the label, but I've never used one. You might ask at your local quilt shop. -Kelly

Excellent tutorial!! (I’d like to know how you got your light strip on your machine to stay in place. I bought one, as with age my eyes don’t see as well as they used to, but my light strip just wouldn’t stick 🙄
Mine was very easy to install. I don't remember 100% but probably cleaned the "sticker" location with rubbing alcohol 1st, but nothing else special. I think it was a cheap one on Amazon. Maybe try a different brand. I bet it's lost it's sticky. Maybe some Double-sided tape?
This was very helpful! Do you not use a screwdriver to tighten the foot on your machine? I would be afraid that mine would loosen and I would break a needle!?!?
I dont always use the driver for the foot, I check it pretty frequently but with "quilting" its probably best to use the driver because of all the vibrations- you are right! I do for the needle :) -Kelly

When the feed dogs are dropped your hands are driving the speed of the movement and the length of the stitch. Ive heard of people dropping the length to 0 but your dogs shouldn't be moving unless your machine doesn't really have a free-motion function. So drop to zero cant hurt, but mine was at 2.5 for this whole video but the feed dogs were down. Hope that helps! -Kelly

I have a Juki as well. How low did you lower the speed?

If you cut a fingertip and thumb tip out of one of the gloves you can put them both in all of the time and take care of the loose threads
And I use my Juki and hand quilt. Both are relaxing in a different way.

Its roughly 45x80. I love it too! Sew much room. But be cautioned - tons of room to stack things too! LOL.

It's roughly 80x 44 I think. I love it!! I just have to work to not stak too much on it all the time:)
@@pickinstitches Thank you. I’m working on a 54x38x38 and as projects get bigger I need more space. I also find 38 is a little too high for my 5’2 frame.
