So I went to rewatch the scenes where to see if I was remembering things correctly and I was. So sorry you're a bit of a patchy watcher.
I agree with a lot of your opinions on this, but the reason that the Rory said ‘thank you’ is because the Doctor did what Rory told him to, to keep her safe from her own eagerness for danger, after she was put in the school. Hence why the Doctor went out of character because of Rory’s commands. But apart from that this episode is a great big meh, and your review as always was accurate and had solid points
agreed... This episode is very meh, I'd even say personally its one of my least favourite in the shows history (excluding dr 13) but Rory and the Dr butting heads was one of the highlights in the episode regardless whether it could have been done better or not... The fact he missed the point of the doctor going out of character to support Rory when I'm pretty sure i understood his reasons when i was like 12 is pretty mind boggling, dont know what upset him about this episode but he sure went after it like john wick did after his dog died...
The only real sin of the episode for me is the resolution. They just had no idea how to conclude, so they do it by the doctor climbing a tower and turning off the plot.
I believe the reason the Doctor went all shouty and out of character towards Amy is that The Doctor wanted to make Amy disillusioned with wanting a romantic interest in him and abandoning Rory. Rory says "Thank you" as he recognises that he is trying to help him and succeeds. The rest of the episode is far from strong writing but id put it into a 3 or 4/10 personally.
Toby Whithouse has already stated the original script he submitted for this episode was better than the version we saw on screen. His unseen version was so good in fact, Neil Gaiman read it & upon being impressed by its quality, kept in touch so they could work together in the future. That's also why Neil brought Toby on board to helm the upcoming adaptation of Gormenghast as showrunner. Unfortunately, it sounds as though this installment went through production hell.

Definitely fell off after that though, and I'd never say it was "peak" who. I'm not sure what I'd say the peak is, probably either S3 or S4 finale, but also, S1 is the only flawless season IMO.
I do believe I enjoyed the first half of season 6 very much, until the reveal of river song. I dunno, matt smiths era is such a mixed bag for me. I consider s1 to have the most consistent theming and quality, and s4 by default ranks very highly for being consistently emotional and epic, as well as the culmination of everything RTD established coming together
Man, Rorys plight is so sad and does nothing for Amy’s character one bit. She tries to seduce the doctor the night before her wedding, leading to the doctor admitting to kissing her in front of story and his friends, could you imagine how he felt with that? Don’t get me started on how Rory waited 2000 years protecting Amy and his reward was for her to want a snog with the Doctor on the day of her wedding. Look how they massacred my boy
This is why I dislike Amy as a character. She has amazing moments but Moffat doesn't know how to write someone who has a journey or arc that works well to mAke the bad moments mean something. Donna had that. Rose had that too. Even Martha.

@@xPanda25 Nonononono, Rose was never serious with Mickey and they were just casually dating. This is made 100% clear even in the very first episode when she doesn't notice he is plastic and solidified at the end of the episode when Mickey's fear turns her right off and she says goodbye to him. Both characters understand that she is basically dumping him. A huge part of Mickey's character arc is him learning to not be a coward (infact becoming quite brave and heroic) and Rose learning to really respect him, perhaps for the first time. Rose could flirt with anyone she wanted, especially since her season 1 stuff with the Doctor didnt have any romantic hints unlike season 2. Amy was one day away from marrying Rory, so its way way different. She wasnt single and just ran away from Rory. Don't get me wrong, she oozed sex appeal and as a teenager I remember her strutting towards to Doctor demanding he kiss her as a real turn on, but shes not a great person when it comes to Rory nor is their relationship remotely healthy. Its kinda like she gives into his attempts rather than grows to respect him. I think its like in the Hunger Games where Katniss basically just resigns herself to being with Peeta despite never having strong feelings for him, like both Amy and Katniss love their respective men for making huge sacrifices for them but never respect or love them as people, just the deeds they do. So as per, Rose is the best, story, character, looks etc, the girl tops it all (Amy might be on paper prettier, but Billie Pipers charisma and charm push her over the top).

Oh come on Harry the episode is NOT a 1/10. It's a 5/10 at best. It's a cheesy episode on purpose. It's bloody vampires.... In Venice! With a title like that it's clearly intended to be cheese, even if there are some major problems. Some of the jokes actually had me laughing, and I honestly don't hate watching this episode especially because the main villain lady is fantastic at trying with the script.
You might be right - maybe I was being too harsh. As I was editing I realised I had actually mentioned a few parts that I liked, including McCrory's performance. However I firmly believe that for every good thing in this episode, there are 9 bad things. The score represents my aversion to this episode, in that I don't think I will ever want to watch it again. As someone who's favorite season is season 5, this is a pretty silly episode. It has the setup for a decent episode, and then it's like "oh,,, theyre fish people." and thats it nothing else
I liked the episode for setting up the "main plot" of the season affecting not just childhood Amy. hearing a scary alien be afraid of something we have already seen always gets me. also fun "deconstruction" of the vampire mythos
It's the first time "the Silence" are mentioned. In Prisoner Zero's prediction, "silence" refers to the Doctor's own silence at Trenzalore in response to the question asked by the Timelords ("Doctor Who?").
My theory - The god complex SHOULD have been this episode as the next one (Amy's Choice) where the Doctor, Amy and Rory are in a dream state in a world where Amy is pregnant and one where they re freezing in the tardis and they have to find it out. I think they made the ending how it is, because they ment for amy to still be shaken up and to believe the doctor would abandon them yet again, where she would realise that the truth is she wouldnt let him run away again, reoccurring in the season finale where sh w is locked in the pandorica to get to the doctor, but this was scrapped when this filled was added in.
They really did Rory dirty this season. Thank GOD the next season develops his character a lot more, because I don't see the point of him being in this episode. He brings absolutely nothing to the table, and he feels more like an inconvenience than a companion, which really sucks because he ends up being one of my favourite companions of new-who! They could have done so much more with Rory, Arthur Darvill is a great actor, but they gave him fuck all to work with script-wise this entire season. Poor lad was ecstatic to be a part of Dr Who, only to be given this shite.
We all do. I blame the current state of the show on both Moffatt and Chibnall. Moffatt started off good, but really lost his way by the Capaldi years, and Chibnall just can't write, even when he's given good plot ideas, actors and other writers (The woman that wrote Haunting of Villa Diodati, I literally have no other examples.)
I don't get why rorys confrontation was while sneaking into somewhere to save his fiancee instead of after the doctor shouts at her. Like that's not budgetary or scheduling that's just crap writing
because the reason the doctor shouts at her is because of the reality check Rory gives him in their confrontation ...? That it the reason Rory thanks the doctor because they both know amy needed to calm the F down and know her limits... I don't know how any vigilant adult doesn't see this...
It really feels like you went into this review looking for problems. The nitpickiness of this video is like a parody of cinemasins At the halfway point you go "jesus this episode is appalling" and it genuinely surprised me. Like at that point you had literally only pointed out one flaw that was of any importance
All i remember from this episode was the Magazine. My auntie bought me one every time i would see her and in that one issue was a pair of fake Vampire teeth... they were fucking awesome
The bit where the doctor tells Amy to fuck off. I think you misunderstood. He's deliberately doing that out of character because he wants to appease Rory and keep Amy out of harms way for him. Rory sees this and hence says thank you
I knew, before your review began, that your verdict would be: "it's shit", (not just because VAMPIRES OF VENICE *was*, in fact, shit...but) because the ad that played beforehand was for adult diapers. "That's an accurate algorithm", I thought. Thank you for restoring my sense of reality, because another WHO Reviewer whom I enjoy actually LIKES this episode, and I couldn't quite process that.
I really like this episode as a fun romp, the location work is gorgeous and the hammer horror imagery with Vampires is brilliant! Not a fan of the fish people but it's fun for a Saturday night!
I love your reviews but it does feel like confirmation bias slipped in here. You outright attack a lot of stuff that otherwise give a pass to during the RTD era. You can't criticise the admittedly poor quality CGI monsters in this but then remark on how brilliant the Father's Day episode ones are. Don't get me wrong, this episode is poor, but Helen McCrory clearly having a lot of fun filming her role alone has to guarantee it more than a one.
Well, The Ghost Monument (ep. 2) in series 11 got 2/10, which will make that a better story than this. I personally think this story is a hundred times better. I agree it's not the best story, but I like it.
Why haven't you done Victory of The Daleks yet Harry, I know it's bad but I can't have been that bad? Edit: If it's on your Patreon, does that mean it'll be coming to TH-cam?
@@sageyt4808 Well. considering I hated this episode more than any series 11/12 episode (even though series 5 as a whole is WAY better than either of those series), I sadly find it hard to say i disagree.
This is the episode that had me quit watching doctor who, i was still adjusting to the new characters and this episode being so bad just killed any interest i had left.
I think that was seriously unfair picking on the number of friends Rory had. Talk about nit-picking. So you think Leadworth is too small for him to have that many friends? The guy works in a flipping hospital! They're probably all friends from work, plus maybe a couple of school friends. Its not that hard to work something like that out. As for why none of them say anything - they're extras, not actors! There's no need to waste money on paying them for speaking parts where speaking really wouldn't add anything. That's not legitimate criticism, its just looking for things to nitpick over when a modicum of common sense is enough to dismiss any concerns.
Who hurt you this episode harry... Damn i know this episode is a huge MEH but jesus havent seen anything this brutal since Negan poped an eye out with a baseball bat...

If anyone's interested, I'm also reviewing all the Doctor Who stories on my channel, with me already done the first 3 Doctors. No pressure, of course, just might be worth checking out! :)
"She has nothing to say?" Sometimes you can't be bothered.
This wasn’t the first time the Silence was mentioned, or else Prisoner Zero would never have said, and I quote “Silence, Doctor. Silence will fall.”
It's the first time "the Silence" are mentioned. In Prisoner Zero's prediction, "silence" refers to the Doctor's own silence at Trenzalore in response to the question asked by the Timelords ("Doctor Who?").
5:48 made me laugh
would have been funnier if it was Nigel because he's the king of Europe
My theory - The god complex SHOULD have been this episode as the next one (Amy's Choice) where the Doctor, Amy and Rory are in a dream state in a world where Amy is pregnant and one where they re freezing in the tardis and they have to find it out. I think they made the ending how it is, because they ment for amy to still be shaken up and to believe the doctor would abandon them yet again, where she would realise that the truth is she wouldnt let him run away again, reoccurring in the season finale where sh w is locked in the pandorica to get to the doctor, but this was scrapped when this filled was added in.
I just feel bad for Rory
... and not just because we share a name, I promise
*Sigh....I Miss Russell T Davis...
The nitpickiness of this video is like a parody of cinemasins
At the halfway point you go "jesus this episode is appalling" and it genuinely surprised me. Like at that point you had literally only pointed out one flaw that was of any importance
"Our patron, Signora Boris Johnson"
😂😂😂😂😂
I find it funny, how in every shot Rory looks like he's just on the verge of crying.
i just realized you haven't done victory of the daleks :(
He said it's a Patreon exclusive
All i remember from this episode was the Magazine. My auntie bought me one every time i would see her and in that one issue was a pair of fake Vampire teeth... they were fucking awesome
Sounds interesting
I wish the vampire aliens got to be the returning Great Vampires
Those vampire teeth. If they were supposed to inspire terror and fear they did quite the opposite.
Yup. Bad. _Reaaaaaaal_ bad. My boy Toby let himself down.
as a croatian the way you said trogir made me burst out laughing XD
Fucking hell surfshark must be confident with you to give them a 83% discount
When the doctor tried to open the wooden door he touched the metal hinge plate things
"Did it *suck* ?"
*Cheeky smile
The Silence was actually first mentioned in The Eleventh Hour.
It's a 9 out of 10 for me!
yeeehh I like series 5 and it’s a good season but this episode isn’t very good ahaha
Season 5 is one of my favorites but this is the worst episode 100%
Oh yeah season 5 is great,Not a fan of the hungry Earth/cold blood but apart from thar its solid
I think it's clear for everyone this was a transitional period for everyone in Who, new doctor new director, new show runner.
Are we not gonna talk about how people randomly start panicking because it starts raining?
The title 'did it suck?' is rather appropriate for this episode.
Makes my day when one of these come out
Second time silence was mentioned...first time in 11th hour
Nah I fel like htis episode is fine and you forget it is for children primarily. I think its fun and relitivley unnoteworthy though not awful
I find it funny how 2it's for kids" is a valid excuse for a bad product when it comes to media, when you wouldn't say the same about food for example.
Of course it sucked. Vampires don’t scrape and lick
How did this episode hurt you bro 😂😂 it’s so much fun I don’t get why you so mad
People say the same thing about the transformers films and the point is just as invalid as when the transformers movies were popular
Poor Rory
Did it SUCK?
Coz they are vampires. I get it. I see what you did there.
"You can be my brother." - Said the wife
.......What.
I wouldn’t say it’s a master piece but I do like this episode 6/10
Yes! I love this episode!
Rory is my favorite companion and this was one of my favorite episodes, lol
No. It IS cause its a good episode1
I’m sure you don’t really watch the episodes, Rory says thank you because he asked the doctor not to place Amy in any danger! for fuck’s sake
Smooth sponsor integration nice 👍
Can I ask? Are you ever going to review Big Bang Theory?
So what happened to all her sons that where left alive at the end
Love your vids so great 😄
Why haven't you done Victory of The Daleks yet Harry, I know it's bad but I can't have been that bad?
Edit: If it's on your Patreon, does that mean it'll be coming to TH-cam?
It's on his patreon.
its on patreon sadly
@@timeofthewhoviansunited1504 Do you know what he gave it?
As much as I've disagreed with you in the past, I agree totally with you on this.
Wow......... you should ahev said you disagreed cause this episode is good
@@sageyt4808 Well. considering I hated this episode more than any series 11/12 episode (even though series 5 as a whole is WAY better than either of those series), I sadly find it hard to say i disagree.
I do think this episode is pretty bad... but I wouldn't say it's as bad as a 1/10. I'd personally give it a 3 or 4.
It’s not a good episode but I wouldn’t give it a 1...
1 out of 10?? Fucking generous.
Meh i liked this episode, it was simple and fun - something lacking with moffat series
Really?
All good points, still love this episode
I agree with most of your points, but I like this episode a lot. So silly.
I somehow never realised how terrible this episode was until this review 🤣
This is the episode that had me quit watching doctor who, i was still adjusting to the new characters and this episode being so bad just killed any interest i had left.
I'd give this episode 99/10
Rory might have gone to Uni with them? He is a nurse so might have some medical education?
i never realised how cringy this episode was i think i loved it when i was younger for the vampires and hogwarts esque theme
I somehow missed this episode first time around, rewatched it, and....I really don't remember anything from it
😒 1/10
what is wrong with you
I'd rather you didn't even touch the moffat era since you're too biased to review it
Agreed, he clearly dislikes this era, this episode is perfectly acceptable for Doctor Who
just because you don't agree with his opinion doesn't mean he shouldn't review this era
So he's not allowed to have an opinion? If you don't like his videos then don't watch them
@@TheProceduralTraveller he gave Vincent less than a 5/10. That's proof enough
I didn't think it was THAT bad.
This is my sisters favourite episode..... fml
Is this a bruh moment?
how dare she like things
11:34
This was actually the first episode I watched
I think that was seriously unfair picking on the number of friends Rory had. Talk about nit-picking. So you think Leadworth is too small for him to have that many friends? The guy works in a flipping hospital! They're probably all friends from work, plus maybe a couple of school friends. Its not that hard to work something like that out. As for why none of them say anything - they're extras, not actors! There's no need to waste money on paying them for speaking parts where speaking really wouldn't add anything. That's not legitimate criticism, its just looking for things to nitpick over when a modicum of common sense is enough to dismiss any concerns.
I loved this episode when I was younger lol
Ok I agree it wasn’t great. But you gave it the same score as love and monsters? And just one score better than orphan 55! That’s harsh.
One of the few episodes I’ve only seen once.
A 1/10? Really? It's not "Return of Doctor Mysterio" bad. I'd give it a 4.
Yeah, it's probably the worst episode in Series 5.
Who hurt you this episode harry... Damn i know this episode is a huge MEH but jesus havent seen anything this brutal since Negan poped an eye out with a baseball bat...
3:44 The WORST Doctor Who scene ever to hit the screen. Turnes my stomach every time. Today i just fast forward
i fast forward though the whole episode
i knew there was a reason (or several) why my most recent doctor who rewatch ended here
Can he review a good man goes to war
Goones is acctaly a great film
Just what i needed xd
This episode was, for lack of better words, just a bit shit.
Just one question tho. Victory of the Daleks when????
Hogwarts hahaha.
This episodie is indeed bad. Totally agree with your review.
Harry the bias is showing
