    Never really needed a block heater here in the UK but always thought they were a genius idea.
    In my brain I thought they would be really complex expensive units.
    Thanks for sharing this, it is just the same as an immersion heater in a hot water tank! I know how to fit one of those and I have done core plugs so I may fit one.
    Lot's of other useful information as usual. Preventative measures are worth there weight in gold.

      I have a video for the weekend of me starting the S1 and my old forklift at -20c
      The forklift has a block heater and struck up after an hour with no problems - the hydraulics were another matter!...

    For 220V areas, you could always fit two heaters wired in series. 2Kw would heat the engine twice as fast and run quite happily on a 13 amp socket.

    Forgot to add, I remember my dad had an old Ford Thames van back in the seventies, in the winter he had a little paraffin heater which he would light and put under the oil pan/ oil sump on cold mornings, oh yes, and the spark plugs would be warmed on the gas cooker if it was really cold.
    Block heaters would have been his dream.

    would be very grateful if you come up with a fix for doing this on a TD5, like yourself we have had a very cold spell here in Ontario this winter. Still managed to start but lots of wear and tear im sure which id love to avoid.

      I just had a look at t aTd5 block online, and I do not think you can fit a
      block heater to a Td5 as the core plugs in the block are in line with the
      cylinders and the heaters would be too long and foul the cylinder, and beside
      the plugs are 28 mm, far too small for a block heater I know of.Same problem withthe head plugs
      You can buy a remote heater with a pump installed which you could put into one of the heater hoses which will help. Think you can get them at CTire
      My friend Jeremy did this with his Td5, but he has an issue bleeding out the
      air which he since sorted.

      I have a Defa block heater on my TD5 and it's broken. I've just ordered a new one, part nr D411111. I know Calix have one too.

    Hi m8ke after I've watched a lot of your uploads this so much so that I subscribe to you but I must like with this vid you could really do with showing people more in-depth as not every one knows how remove say half this side parts of the engine to get to the get to the core plugs then all so not every one knows how to remove & refite them even though explained people could still do it wrong or do damage it would of just made for better viewing by showing viewers step by step from start to Finnish. Keep up the good work.

    Its a couple of years since the video.....any leads on a 220v version? Have a 200tdi in Sweden I wouldn't mind fitting a block heater to

    May i suggest to put an inverter on the car that will run of the battery. That way you will be able to use the heater even if you are off grid.

      Hmm,
      It is a good idea, but at 1,000 watts for the heater for a couple of hours+, it could drain the battery to a point it will not crank over
      It would be an interesting experiment
      Not too hot on inverters, but I have one to fit on Monday so I may get time to play with it!

      Britannica Restorations i was thinking that many people go on trips with their land rover on winters to. So maybee a dedicated batery for the block heater would not be a bad idea.
      Another thing that i was thinking is to place a heater in the oil pan. So to bring the oil up in temp to reduce his gelish viscosity in extreme cold. And an oil temp gauge will be nice. That way the engine should not suffer for poor lubrication on cold starts.

      We have a variety of heaters for vehicles, however in Canada we have a pathetic 110 volts which limits how many Watts can be used - about 1500 W practically
      A Webasto or Espar Diesel powered engine coolant heater is the best option for remote areas
      As for oil heating, engine oils have come on in leaps and bounds and in winter I used to run my 300Tdi on Rotella T6 0w40 - used to start easy with no block heater.
      As you state, as long as the motor can turn freely to get enough speed, it will compress and fire up

    Curious as to the part number for the zerostart tempo block heater that you used in the install?
