These cases kill me. An underprivileged person/kid goes missing and there is a cover up because someone involved has a rich and/or influential family member. You always wonder what this person could have done with their life. I think you are completely on the right track Gabby. Especially the burning down of the lodge one week later...suspicious. Thank you for covering these vintage cases of stories that were never big in the news. You do the victims and the families a great service.😊

The police not all but most need either reform or put in jail for using there position in society as a weapon for there OWN advantage let's just say, that's putting it mildly. Flat out criminals themselves. A whole new level of criminology. The abuse of power in the police department is so prevalent, for all to see! thanks to the camera's for the public's safety it has slowed down a little, but the abuse of power omg! If a police officer takes a dislike to you, hell have no fury, or on many occasions, the ex partners of police officers suffer terribly as the get pulled over constantly, harassed, taken to court repeatedly for no reason other then, they are the ex of a cop. Abuse of power, cover ups, disgusting. But one by one we are exposing the ass holes. Stay safe hun, speak out, be proud but always record everything when speaking to a cop. They look after there own in such a way that you can't touch them unless taken down by many. But it only takes one to start the process of there demise. 🤗

I think federal warrants need to be issued to override the local authorities who are clearly covering up something. I am not knowledgeable on New York State law but I do know that there is such a thing as the freedom of information act I do not know if it applies to open cases but it would seem to me that someone should be able to get those case files. Unlike TV, in MOST states the Feds can't just "take over" a case, especially if no federal crime occurred. Since Joe's considered a local who is missing locally, it would be tough for the Feds to do anything.
Events of the recent past in New York suggest how much politics matter there. (To be fair, NY is not alone in that way.)
Honestly, the people of the village ARE NOT showing that much concern, and never were. The best way to get things moving is for the 5,000 residents, people of the county and the area to get loud!
      -Get a new sheriff,
      -Contact the state police
-Talk to reporters, ANY REPORTERS. Even the National Enquirer & the sleazy rags that claim Elvis retired on Mars.
      -DEMAND something be done.
Also, I'd bet 80% of the kids who partied at that spot knew EXACTLY what happened... Teens who are drinking/smoking weed CAN'T keep a secret.
TRUE STORY.... In the 1980s something BAD happened back where I'm from in southern Appalachia. Locals & family members told the sheriff, state police & judges, etc... "Everyone knows who did what"...(and they did.) "Y'all can lock'em up forever, or we'll handle it...and you know hell don't have visiting days." That's almost a direct quote... (DON'T ASK how I know this). The protected parties were soon arrested, convicted & sentenced to ~140 years each. They all died in prison.

Having spent 7 years as a teenaged boy, and having lived in an area with very cold winters in my late twenties, I can say with great shame that yes I can believe that a teenaged boy wearing high tops would walk 5 miles on a 20 degree night.
I did it on a snowy -20° night in my late twenties. And yes it was for "warm company".
That said, cases like this, along with personal experience having lived and worked in rural areas, are why I wouldn't live in a small town by choice.

Or maybe they drove some place completely different to hide the body. It is all small villages here and all not so far from eachother. They could have drove a county over in a half hour. There are just so many details I wonder about that I wish we had more clarity on to frame up his story better. They should have accounted for where the boys were for every second of the night. So many details that we don't know

Anytime I hear about a case where someone "decides to walk home" and isn't found it ends up to be foul play later. Like you said, if it was hypothermia, a car hit & run, or any of those things.."a more natural cause" they would've found him.

Joe is a part of my family my father told me he is my cousin. My family also told me stories about joe and him being missing. It sucks to hear stories about a family member being missing and being possibly murdered. I've heard from my family two different scenarios of what happened to him. It's a cold Case for sure but I would like some answers and for his remains to be found sincd he's family. The police definitely lacked in this investigation. Someone just doesn't dissappear especially when he left to get help he wouldn't just vanish and run off. When I get the chance I'm going to go back up there and search myself. Thank you for spreading awareness of his case 🙏

I don't understand why everybody that is commenting is either hitting on you or is overly bothered about him being erased from the yearbook. How about he was f****** murdered and it was covered up by a small town, and a judge, because that's how small towns work. I know this because I'm from one. This case should be taken to a higher level. All of those boys didn't murder him. One of them did, most likely the one connected to the judge. The other two were told to shut up by the judge. He probably scared them and said even though you didn't commit the murder you will still go away for being there and not helping etc.

Need a petition to get the case investigated by state police or the local fbi. He didn't leave the area and is probably still up there somewhere unless they drove him out of that area to dump him. This is ridiculous! He was murdered, maybe even accidentally killed by them going too far, but his remaining family need to know where he is and what really happened. Maybe the family can request assistance from the Cold Case Foundation.

NYS absolutely does & did nothing for this case. Unfortunately when you know people here, it's swept under the rug and made to disappear. I used to be friends with his niece, and they all firmly believe it was JP was absolutely 100% responsible and that Kelly & Wade are just as guilty, for not coming forward. It 100% was meant for the building to be destroyed as a last ditch effort to cover up his sons wrong doings. I wish someone outside of the case had followed the trucks the down everything was torn down & hauled out so that his remains could've been identified and them be charged. I hope and pray one day for them to find SOMETHING. But unfortunately now it seems very highly unlikely.

As someone who grew up in the Town of Wawarsing, I can tell you to this day, the Ellenville police department is no better now with its half-assed investigation tactics and rug-sweeping than it was then. I just hope someone will drag those boys (they will never be men) into a polygraph before they're dead. Joe went missing 2 months before I was born, and I've known his story since I was in 1st grade. Parents both died only months apart. 💔Last person to see her interviewed by the deputy who was his father etc etc. #CoverUp. And Joanie’s case is still being covered up nearly 40 years later. And not REALLY being investigatee although still open. But I hope Joe is found one day so his siblings and those who love him have answers. It’s the ambiguous grief that takes such a horrendous toll on those who love a missing person. 💔😰

Gabby, this is a very interesting and yet horrific case of a young man's disappearance. There's to many unanswered questions in this case for me, such as why Joe Helt didn't go to one of his friend's home for the night since the three friends lived close by. Why wasn't the friends questioned more especially the 21 year old adult. Why all of a sudden the burnt-out abandoned ski lodge was off limits to search and then torn down. I've read and heard about cases like this before over the years and I've found it is usually always someone who knows exactly what happened to the person who was murdered or disappeared, especially in a small town. Great investigating of this story, as you always do, an excellent job. Take care 🦋

Wow. I'm with you there. My guess is more than one person knows something. How awful to never know what happened to your family member. The not knowing is just extra cruel. I wonder if he ever left the burnt down lodge! I feel like he didn’t..hence it being tore down a week later! Maybe he wanted to leave because he had work...and JP got mad ...picked a fight ...and Joe took off walking...and maybe out of anger JP hit him with the vehicle. And it killed Joe so they had to hide him. JP would have been drinking and driving...and they made the story up of a tow truck just in case there were marks found on the vehicle or the road from the incident...and they thought that would explain them away. I do t think he left that party...and Those three guys are responsible...one maybe more than the other two...but the other two had to keep it secret because of who JP father was. He probably told them he would blame on them and that they would go to jail and he would get away with it if they told. It’s so sad...and so many possibilities could have happened...and his poor parents and family will never know unless one of those three guys come forward. I think pressure needs to be put on them at this point. Maybe one will break their silence

I'd really like to know... I want to see if the quote "Judge" father of one of the boys is still a sitting judge. Also, who is the new village Sherriff? Its been 34 years, that should be long enough for a lot of officers to retire, new sheriff voted in - that may allow some hood hearted young officer in the village to "take a look"... Also, by now a new DA is likely, too. Perhaps, it is time for people, starting with US - to petition the county, state and federal courts to evaluate the LE Office and its Officers, look into this case, someone dropped the ball. What he deserves is young, fresh eyes. Renewed interest and spirit. We should all join hands and push for answers, demand an internal affairs investigation...

It's a small enough town, I'm surprised some reporter/journalist hasn't poked around asking questions and filling some of these blanks in. The person who originally shared this case with you, was she connected to the case/town at all? Maybe she could poke around a little.
