Emma is not your typical 16 year old girl. As you stated, her stage presence is extraordinary. Whenever Emma takes the stage, the attention of everyone is on her, and it doesn't faze her in the slightest. She carries herself with a natural grace and poise that seems almost otherworldly; as if her being is of divine origin; as if she really is dancing on the stars.
When she sings the line 'it's good to be alive' the tears begin to flow. It's so beyond my comprehension that, knowing what she goes through everyday of her life merely to survive, she can sing that line with such composure and equanimity.
This performance was every bit as epic as 'Voila'. I appreciate your reaction so much. You were not the only one brought to tears.
    Thanks again. All the best.

Yes that got me too. Hearing the words "It's good to be alive" is always nice, but hearing it from a singer who has so many challenges just to stay alive herself? That gives those words a much deeper meaning. I mean: vocally Emma is very, very strong. But her body isn't, due to her life long tube feeding since she was 9 month old. In addition to that she is a short person as well (about 150 centimeters is not much for a 16 year old). When she performed last May somewhere in the Netherlands (not in a theater) with an orchestra they had to bring something in where Emma could stand on, because the audience simply could not see her. And the organisation apparently was not aware of that. I can't even imagine how that must feel.... But.. she laughed, asked "can you see me now?", and delivered an awesome performance.

I’ve worked with kids who have the toughest illnesses, including cancer, spinal bifida, gastro paresis etc. these young people (I won’t call them kids again), are the warmest, mature, kindest, funniest people I’ve ever encountered. It’s like they’ve looked the worst possible devil straight in the eye but they know themselves. There’s a tremendous strength. Adults have many facets but younger people excel in the face adversity. Emma Kok exemplifies this. And oh, is she so talented! She has my utmost respect and she moves me. May she sing for many years! 💜
Edit: And I believe she has no nerves because of the other adversity she’s overcome. She’s already been through the worst-and this is her dream, what she holds onto.

They finally diagnosed her problem when she was 9 months old. She has never known anything else. I have seen other gastroparesis sufferers for whom it came at 16 years - hard to know which is worse. To have had a normal life and lost it - hopefully temporarily - or never known anything else.

    • @stevecgarry
      @stevecgarry 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@ChrisDart4232 I may have confused things a little, she was put on pumps at 9 Months, but didn't get fully and properly diagnosed until she was 10 YEARS old, and in the meantime, she underwent a lot of procedures that in some cases made things worse, one that we know about was when they messed up her gag reflex, which means she now cannot vomit, and that was not helpful, as there are times when gastroparesis does cause problems with vomiting, and Emma never talks openly about pain issues, but they are almost certainly there, simply because of the problems of her stomach not working as it should, the more I see of her in action, at events beyond her huge involvement with Andre, the more she impresses me, her drive and determination to live as full a life as she can is only incredible.
Despite the huge social impact of her disease, she's clearly never been able to eat normally, and that goes so much beyond nutrition, the social impact of exclusion from sharing meals with friends is huge, it's clear she has no intention of letting life get her down, and with what she's doing with Andre and others, she is destined for great things, unless her health issues get in the way, I just have to hope that her foundation is able to make progress on finding a cure, or if nothing else, better treatments to free her from the tie of her feeding pumps, it would be so good if she were to become more able to perform free from the restrictions and limitations they impose on her.
Glad you enjoyed 'Part of your world', it is so easy to visualise her singing more of that type of song, and yes, she's incredibly good at them, who knows what she's going to come out with going forward.

I'm sorry, but you seem to be forgetting one thing. Emma did not write/compose this piece of music. Emma only performs it, in a way that many singers can only dream of. The silent force behind this piece is composer Tjeerd Oosterhuis who had this composition in a drawer for years, waiting for that singer who would do it justice. And Emma was that singer. From the moment Emma heard this composition, she knew for sure, “I have to do this one.” As I write this, my thoughts go back to the year 1983, the year when a 19-year-old Whitney Houston was discovered by Clive Davis, and we all know the success that ensued. Long story short, I see a similar pattern developping here; Emma with mentor, Andre Rieu. I hope, many well-known songwriters/composers will have similar ideas to take Emma's wonderful voice around the world.

  • @stevecgarry
    @stevecgarry 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

So much of that reaction didn't need words, it was written on your face, in your eyes, and in your emotions, Emma so beautifully did to you the same as she does to me, and millions more, it's one of the reasons why this song has reached almost 2 million views in less than a week, and why it will probably go on to have more views than Voila, which is still climbing the numbers, now in excess of 62 million in less than 12 months, Emma's natural ability to reach so deep into her audience, to speak so wonderfully, and to deliver incredible songs like this one, they are the reason for her popularity.
I still struggle to work out how she delivered those top notes with so much power, and for so long, and then that one line, 'It's good to be alive', she so much knows what that means because of her own situation.
She is a very determined and dedicated young woman, and being under Andre's wings is the perfect place for her at the moment, her singing style and ability suits the environment of a big orchestra, she's done a number of performances with other orchestras over the last while, and delivered stunning performances on every occasion.
Emma was honoured to be asked to perform as part of the annual commemoration events in May of this year to remember the huge number of lives lost liberating the Netherlands from German occupation in WWII, she sang at several events across the country, the most prominent being a duet with April Darby, singing ' When you believe'
    th-cam.com/video/YG8WV1GFt_c/w-d-xo.html
This concert was in Amsterdam, in the presence of the Dutch Royal family, and a significant number of high ranking politicians, and she absolutely nailed the performance.
For me, her strongest performance of this series was in the Hague, a Demi Levato cover of a technically challening song, 'Father', and she absolutely excelled in this one, an incredible performance.
    th-cam.com/video/zXWBj7-edWU/w-d-xo.html
From the same concert, another cover, 'Hero',
    th-cam.com/video/rohP0V3ECRY/w-d-xo.html
From the same series of concerts, 'You raise me up',
    th-cam.com/video/NIXB7TbeMvw/w-d-xo.html
In recent days, she sang the Dutch National Anthem at the Moto GP event at Assen, with the same military band who have been her backing in the recent commemoration concerts, she has ice in her veins, 110,000 people at the event, and a worldwide audience in the multiple hundreds of millions, and again she absolutely nailed the performance, and was also wearing beautiful attire, very classic, very much in keeping with her image.
    th-cam.com/video/qhsIj-iwKtE/w-d-xo.html
A complete change, just to give you a flavour of where she's come from, this next video was a part of a much longer concert arranged by her brother Enzo, Part of the Enzo concert in June 2020, so she was 12 at the time, and a tiny 12, 'Opportunity'
    th-cam.com/video/oMyqCs6zZP4/w-d-xo.html
I love the way she ends it with a spoken, 'I guarantee', and that beautiful smile that says she absolutely meant it, and at the same time knew she's just nailed that performance, it happens a lot, that cute smile at the end of a significant performance, it was the same with Voila, she turned to Andre, arms wide, with a smile, no words, but it was clear what she meant, 'How was that?', and Andre's response said it all, one word, 'Fantatstic', the embrace and bringing her back for more of the standing ovation, a wonderful moment.
A beautiful home video recorded several years ago during Covid, A Disney film cover, 'Part Of Your World' - @halle (The little mermaid)
    th-cam.com/video/itxs-aNyRJY/w-d-xo.html
Another song that is special to Emma because of her health situation, a Miley Cyrus cover, 'The Climb', recorded for Tube feeding week.
    th-cam.com/video/dOhzlDEuCBg/w-d-xo.html
I could put more up, but this is plenty for a starter, and gives you a feel for where Emma has come from, and more importantly, where she's going, there is no doubt that as long as her health situation doesn't change, she will be making bigger and better waves for a long time to come, and it's clear that she is very happy and comfortable working with Andre and his orchestra at the moment, I am hoping that will continue beyond the end of the 2024 tour season, while it's also good that she can and does do other work outside of the significant demands of the world tour with Andre.
I will close with my normal appeal to everyone reading or listening to this channel.
Emma's situation hasn't changed since that first appearance with Andre last July, she is still tied to her two external feeding pumps for 22 hours a day, and I know from recent social media posts, she finds that hard to cope with at times, despite that she's loving the singing with Andre, and that came clear only last week, when her normal 30 minute procedure to change her feeding tubes didn't go according to plan, and she had to endure more than an hour of intense pain while they sorted out the problems, and this was only just before the final rehearsals and then the first live weekend of shows in Maastricht, it was very evident from the rehearsal videos that Emma was feeling the cold, she was wearing a thick winter coat and scarf, and for the rehearsals, she stays connected to the ever present feeding tubes, it's become a part of who she is, and at last, she's not as troubled by being seen on camera with them connected.
I make no apologies for adding this, Emma deserves all the support she can be given, as her foundation works to help find better treatments, or even possibly a cure for this awful disease.
Emma's foundation is almost unique in terms of the work they are doing, there's been very little research into a devastating illness, the effects on the sufferers are huge.
Emma's foundation can be found at gastrostars.nl
Please, if at all possible, join me in making a (regular) contribution to her foundation, to enable them to help patients like Emma, and research this awful disease that has affected her from birth, and requires her to be tied to the pumps and feeding tubes since she was 9 MONTHS old, for 22 hours a day, hopefully, the work of her foundation will find a cure.
One of their main people is a surgeon who has a lot of experience in dealing with gastroparesis, and she is not only a surgeon, but also suffers from the same disease herself, to the extent that as a result of her condition worsening, she's had to leave her role in the hospital, and she is now dedicated to the foundation, and working to help find possible new treatments, or even better the cure that will free people like Emma to live a more normal life, rather than be tied to the feeding pumps for so many hours every day.
It will be so good if the work of Emma's foundation can lead to a better treatment, or even a cure, which will free her to do more singing, and it may be people here who make that possible.

    really appreciate your response.
Emma and Andre are currently in their native city where they are giving 12 concerts for 12,000 visitors per concert
To think that a week before this video was recorded, she had to undergo a procedure in the hospital that has to be repeated every 5 months.
Normally this procedure is done under anesthesia, but she does not want that because of the tubes in her throat and deterioration of her voice...
This time things went wrong and that had dire consequences so that she had to wear winter clothes during the rehearsal of the song.
These and other decisions she makes show her as a strong, courageous, young woman who knows what she wants.
The world tour will soon continue with a visit to South America.

Wow, to see you so moved.... Are you ok now? I have never see you so touched ever before. Shall we call this "The Emma effect"? She is so, how do I say it, into the song that she performs. Last May Emma performed a song called "Father" during a Liberation festival (at which the victims of WWII are remembered in the Netherlands in the first week of Mai every year since 1945). The sound-man was completely overwhelmed with emotion when Emma performed it. Emma has said in an interview that she hopes that the audience feels what she feels when she sings a song. And when we have deep feelings, just sitting in front of a screen, you can tell that the tears in the audience are not "planned". Well, fact is that people who have seen emotional challenges at a young age (and no doubt Emma has seen lots of them...) are mentally earlier grown into adults as those who didn't have to deal with that. And maybe that is also influencing her way of performing. I mean what we see in this video is an adult woman of a young age. Probably Emma is still too young to take it on now, but I would love to see her perform "Je suis malade" (I am ill) from French singer Lara Fabian. When you don't know that song: be prepared that your reaction will as least be as emotional as with this song, because Lara also is master in conveying emotions...

That's amazing isn't it? The lyrics were not written for Emma, as she wasn't born back than. And still this piece of art (to me that is what it is ) waited all those years on that shelf till it found Emma when she walked into his studio to work on music (Tjeerd Oosterhuis has written/composed more songs for Emma): she is the perfect singer for this song. Emma loved it immediately and took it with her to André Rieu. She asked him if she could sing it in Maastricht. He agreed and together they worked on the arrangement for Emma and the orchestra. This is the result of that: a wonderful and balanced song performed by a young tiny singer who is understanding the song in detail and who is understanding the art of conveying the emotion of every single word of it.

At 15:12 you can see how Tjeerd's partner Edsilia Rombley congratulates him on Emma's success with the song he has written. Tjeerd comes from a musical family. His sister Trijntje also sings and they did so as a duo for a while. His father is the well-known poet Huub Oosterhuis, who wrote many church hymns. Edsilia is also a well-known singer in the Netherlands. I understand very well the click that Emma and Tjeerd have. Tjeerd also wrote and produced Emma's Strijder (Warrior) and "Laat mij een vlinder zijn (Let me be a butterfly).

She is speaking in what, to her, is a foreign language. Her biggest audience was when she sung the National Anthem at the Formula One meeting (110,000). Two songs that also express her experience are Warrior and Let Me Be a Butterfly. For a powerful stage presence see her singing All I Want for Christmas, at Andre's Christmas concerts.

Great review. This song was written 20 years ago but never released until now. The composer wanted it to be her song. You are so right as she feels so blessed to be there just for us & that we make her feel special. Yes she is so special for us to hear her regardless of what we are going through. I’m very moved every time that I hear her sing this song. Thank you very much for sharing with us.

Can you imagine: Only 3 days before this performance Emma had a rough surgery in her stomach to replace the feeding tubs (that has to be done every 5 month). As Anesthesia means a tube in the throat, a small risk for the vocal cords and being a week "out of business", Emma has asked her doctor when she was 13 years old if it could be done without that.... And that is what she has chosen for: the hard way.... As Emma puts it simply: "I have chosen for my voice". Only thinking about it gives me the shivers. The day after she had that ordeal she showed up to join the final rehearsal, clearly still recovering... Here is a video of that rehearsal on TH-cam: a very, very, pale Emma in the warmest and thickest clothes you can imagine, but her voice was as well as in this video: very impressive th-cam.com/video/d6blC5IZOEA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7EprcC3_8-KNIUb3 . Talking about brave, about courage and determination. And the way André is hugging her in the show is not played. He has a weak spot for her. In an interview he said: "Yes, of course I know she has a father and mother (such nice people), but what she is doing and achieving despite all her challenges in her daily life... I really want to help her wherever I can".
Back to the song. Emma has worked together with composer Tjeerd Oosterhuis before. When he showed her this 20 years old "lost" song in his studio (it was never ever performed before) she felt in love with it: the words, the melody were speaking to her. She took it with her to one of the rehearsal with André Rieu and asked him if it would be possible to perform it somewhere. André agreed and he and Emma worked together to make it Emma-proof and orchestra-proof so Emma did understand the full meaning of every word of the lyrics and the meaning she wanted to give them. And this is what we get.... WOW. Here we have a very gifted singer who is taking her entire audience with her, "Dancing on the stars". Isn't she? There are tons of emotions to feel when Emma takes a song on (not only this one). Why? Partly because of her story, o yes, and maybe her fragile appearance as well but mainly because she is such a amazingly good performer and storyteller: when Emma sings you can not help but to believe and feel what she sings. Even when it is in a language you don't understand ("Voilà" is proof of that).

    • @JaapFilius

I think that's because at the moment they are singing it they "ARE the song". They feel "one with it". Look at Emma's face: she is not just singing ; she is living it, feeling it. And that's why she does not get lost in it. What amazes me also is the fact that she is so relaxed that she can show it this casual.

Isn't it amazing how my 3 favourite ARTISTS have had health issues in the past, MORISSETTE AMON LAMAR had a cancerous tuna removed from her throat at the age of twelve and all she was worried about was would she be able to sing again, well we've all seen how that's gone, you then have SOHYANG who had ovarian Cancer at the age of twenty and is unable to have children, she also had bouts of pneumonia even when performing, you then you have this young lady EMMA KOK with a paralysed stomach, how unfair is life for these people who do nothing but good in the world and forget about there own sufferings for the comfort of others, BRAVO LADIES the world is a much BETTER place with you around 🇬🇧🔥👌❤️

This week (it is 12 October 2024 now) Pierre Rieu, son of André Rieu, has announced that Emma will join them in 2025 as well: the show goes on for Emma. By the way: on TH-cam you can see that Emma has much more to offer than "Voilà" and this song. She really can cope very well with lots of genres. One of the songs I can highly recomment is "You raise me up", performed by Emma during a military memorial service with the Dutch Royal Military Orchestra a few month ago. Another one is a "Disney compilation" of two songs she performed recently during a "Disney Award" event in the Netherlands. On January 4 next year Emma will perform in a Disney event in the Netherlands as well. Yes things are going well for this confident singer.

If you want to see what at a warrior she is just type in Emma Kok interview on TH-cam. So many videos there when was much younger, and and a stage presence that was obvious from an early age. Natural.
When she was at school she was bullied badly (I can relate to that). She was called a living gnome because of the stunted growth due to her condition, and a Granny because she had to wheel her feeding apparatus around in a trolley. Kids can be so cruel.
Overcoming bullying made her so strong. And I'm sure that the bullies that made her life a nightmare are now humbled by her success and talent. This is how confident at the age of 13 I believe. th-cam.com/video/S9u4y9GqS3s/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
