      I wouldn't say "early" either. Game Theory has always been about entertainment over solid theory crafting from the very beginning. It's more about making you think than being accurate. Half the time the majority of the data presented isn't even applicable to the overlying question the video presents, but rather things that are fun to think about in relation to the topic.
      All that said, it's not so much that Game Theory is a negative thing in and of itself as it is a matter of people taking it way way more seriously than it should be, which can be said of many things people love to hate on around the internet.
      But I suppose that still does lead to this and MatPat not being an accurate comparison to make, as AJ tends far more towards informing specifically on a chosen topic directly.

    Gems are definitely magical. Magic, as far as I understand/believe, is any phenomenon that does not conform to the laws of the universe. An infinite source of energy is a great example of this. It doesn't even matter if that energy is only used to do non-magical stuff, the energy itself is magical. I love Steven Universe for many things, including its basis on scientific ideas, but you can't really say it's entirely scientific until you know how to do it.

    • @AJUniverse
      @AJUniverse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. Everything that they do can be defined scientifically, whether through practice, or through theory, and thereby "fits within the laws of the universe". Sorry, but it's the truth.

    Can you tell us more about your statement at 5:39? What canonic evidence is there for that and/or what statements have the crew made?

    • @AJUniverse
      @AJUniverse  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I won't. You can watch the show and see that they eat and talk with their mouths, that injuries to certain parts of their bodies cause those parts to function poorly, that they see with their eyes, and cry and drool, etc. etc. I think all of that is evidence enough.

    • @itarfer
      @itarfer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You literally said in the video that the crew have made statements about this. I only ask because my friends and I have been debating whether or not gems have to shapeshift, for example, tear ducts to cry. I wanted to know your reasoning as to why you think those are permanent parts of their holographic anatomy as opposed to things they have to shapeshift, but the way you responded to this is kind of rude :/

    • @AJUniverse
      @AJUniverse  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay. I don't have time to do your research for you, though, when you can just look at the show for the answers, or do a google search, or search Twitter. I'm sorry if that seems rude to you.
      I will say, though, that nothing that the crew has said will help you with tear ducts, but we know from Blue Diamond that Gems do have them by default.

      well any digested food would get purged, pearl probably has it mashed into atomic particles so when she releases it, it comes out like air.... amethyst probably enjoys pooping, garnet would probably reduce it to something like a stone and leaves it under her foot when she can.

  • @eonstar

    Can you also explain why a gemstone seems to grow and shrink in fusions or shape shifting although it shouldn't be able to since it's physical

    • @Valentina-mv2ux
      @Valentina-mv2ux 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      eon star
      I think it has more to do with production, not because the gemstone actually changes size. Take Malachite as an example. Her nose gem should be super small, but it's not, I think this is because such a small, almost invisible nose wouldn't lool as good as a regular sized nose.

    • @eonstar
      @eonstar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      V a l e n t i n a IK but it conflicts though. We can tell the gemstone isn't suppose to change size from the actual animation yet it still appears to do so anyways. I'm not sure if that would be considered an animation error tbh.

  • @eonstar
    @eonstar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just wanna note that when Pearl said Steven's body was organic implying that there's was not, I'm pretty sure she was talking about his body or their physical form. Not necessarily the gemstone itself.
    She was talking about fusion to which also has to do with the physical forms of gems combining not the actual gemstone.

  • @Skinnymarks
    @Skinnymarks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't seen anyone go into the idea that single gems have more limited personalities where as fusions have much more complex personalities.
    Single gems seem to have a single motivation. A theme to their personality that every behavior is colored by.
    Where as fusions have a more human level of self contradiction. Where multiple gems personality traits work with each other to make a much more complex and subtle consciousness.

  • @eonstar
    @eonstar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should do a video on if gems have ears. I know that in reformed amethyst had one big ear but I think that may of been because she messed up. None of the gems seem to have ears of what we've scene

    Great video! I've just had a thought.. as you said it's a liquid that's injected into the ground to create gems.. do you think this has something to do with what Peridot meant by "harvesting" when she saw the bubbled gems in the temple?

    • @AJUniverse
      @AJUniverse  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't see how. Gems, once they emerge, are completely solid, and don't seem like they would liquefy again at anything lower than several thousand degrees. They can't possibly be used in the creation of more Gems.

    I know this might be getting ahead of myself but why does holly blue discriminate against quartzes (other than the obvious PD shattered on earth reason) does she not know she is a quartz? Or does the show treat agates like a completely different gem?

    • @AJUniverse
      @AJUniverse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It very clearly treats Agates as separate Gems. She has different hair, is taller than other Quartzes, has wider hips and legs, and a radically different gem shape. She also has a different stated purpose than Quartz Gems.

  • @Jpteryx
    @Jpteryx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think the gemstone is a brain, actually based on what Peridot said about her plush alien. She said its huge head was "swollen with thoughts," implying that Gems think using their heads, not their gemstones. This would make the gemstone more like a cell nucleus than a brain. There must be some mental processes in the gemstone for Lapis to communicate while in the mirror, and for Gems to retain their memory between regenerations, but it seems like "higher" thought processes are carried out in the holographic body.

      nearthe2nd I'm guessing it's just extremely intricate/accurate educated guesses based on what the gem (garnet/sapphire) already knows. Kind of like a super computer using tactics to guess what's going to happen.

    • @phlpcockrell
      @phlpcockrell 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just probability. Assessing everything about people, the surrounding environment and everything else to determine the most probable outcome. The episode with the blizzard spelled it out pretty well. Future vision shows steven doing a thing based on what decisions he'd most likely make, and how connie and greg are most likely to react, then takes it to its most logical conclusion. Steven taking knowledge from each vision changes the outcomes so something different happens every time. Don't you ever find yourself knowing what someone will say or do just because you know them? Or just knowing that putting your hand in fire will burn you, so you'll go to the hospital to get the burn treated, it'll cost lots of money so u won't be able to buy whatever u were planning on getting instead or pay your phone bill or whatever and so on.

    • @phlpcockrell

    I know the future episode of Steven universe is called gem heist. They land in the hangar and garnet they break apart into ruby and sapphire. They pretend to be guards and ruby held Steven to go to the zoo. next they try to make a distraction but it fails. And they put Steven in the zoo. Also blue diamond is coming that's what breaks up the distraction. Also Steven finds his dad. Then it end at a cliff hanger which now I have to wait for the next one😤. One crucial detail I forgot to say is sapphire is supposedly treated like the diamonds.

  • @ham.burger.

    the part about magic is what i've been trying to tell people for ages! I get so annoyed when someone calls a gem's abilities "magic" ugh

  • @neonbat666
    @neonbat666 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do love this analysis, however I don't want to rule out magic completely. In my opinion science doesn't explain Sapphire's future vision, how the Temple (and Rose's Room) is able to create other rooms or other beings/material out of nothing, or how Sardonyx was able to fit into the Temple room, and create an entire studio audience to watch her and Smokey.
    I like to believe that it's a mix of both science and magic, just with a heavy lean on the science. However, that's just my opinion.

So yeah gems are magical, magic is only very advanced science

    Pretty sure what material the physical gem is made of is irrelevant. when a gem poofs there is a cloud, that is material. Pretty sure the fluid in the injectors is a Non-Newtonian fluid, specifically Nanomachines, and that their gemstones are literally that the substances that the actual gemstone is made of, but rather than storing the data on the gemstone itself, instead the gemstone is a container for said nano-machines. the best analogy is that the gemstones gem material is the gem's SKULL, Not their brain, and inside that gem, on the atomic scale, is a highly advanced network of tubes and wires for nano-machines. Nanites. the body/projections being nanites suspended in an electromagnetic bottle, also called a magnetic mirror. magnetism is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, so is light. all boxes ticked.
    The nanites get injected into rock, form a gemstone as the "skeleton/skull" and build inside of it a network of small computers that functionally are it's "brain", then seal it up, create more namomachines from surrounding matter, and emerge from the ground. As for the power source, I'mma stick with my comment from the last video and say it's probably a kugelblitz, which is ultimately horrifying to consider, but the only way I know of for them to regenerate.

    Magic is, I've found, to be empty consciousness. Spell casters have very often been known to call energy from the Earth, celestial bodies, or significant concepts. It is logical for these things to hold an empty conscious residue of sorts because the Earth has plants that don't use their consciousness, celestial bodies are thought about very often and this psychic residue is left on their conceptuality, and other concepts are powerful for the same reason. Not having an owner, these things' consciousness can be controlled by a higher consciousness such as a human. This explains why magic can be found in plants, blood, or spirits. They have empty consciousness to be commanded. Being a consciousness though, they still have a way of behaving, which is why magic is typically cast a certain way. I believe that the reason gems must incubate is because they draw empty consciousness, or magic, from the Earth, the plants, until the gem has enough energy to form. Everything else is still very much true, but the gem is still powered by magic. Of course the gems probably don't see it as such, but it still makes sense to me. The energy from the Earth and plants is magic, after all the gem couldn't absorb their chemical energy in its incubation state because it needs the power it not yet possess to do that. However a gem, having a CPU of sorts, could command the empty consciousness, the magic, of the plants and use it to power itself, without need of an initial power.

    I somewhat disagree with that whole digestive track statement, Amethyst, in Fusion cuisine, describes digesting food, and while yes she could have just made a GI track, I believe there is more to it. As we all know amethyst is the gem who shape shifts the most, but have you ever considered why? (You probably have, I just think it makes it sound interesting) I have concluded that since the gem "goo" injected into the ground, is clearly shown to absorb organic macro molecules from the surrounding environment as part of the gem "recipe", meaning that they could also be the power source of gems. So I believe amethyst may be getting the extra energy she uses when shape shifting from processing the same molecules that made her , and could possibly be powering her, which she gets from eating.

    Consider: the combination of data from greg's dna and rose's gem to make steven. since rose was the one who MADE steven, wouldnt it make more sense for steven's body to be a projection, like a gem's body, simulating a human body? i think someone as tactically inclined as rose would know that for the same result, that would be way easier than making an actual flesh body, and consider that while gems dont have the necessary components to make a baby (read: the ability to generate flesh stuff) they CAN make more light than their frame, ie: like stretching. It would be tiring to her, but it makes more sense for rose to have simulated being pregnant for her own experience, and then to have overwritten her gem data with steven's

    The only criticism I have is the redundant statement "light particles pretending to have mass." Now, I'm not going to start the discussion about whether light has mass or not. BUT, the whole light particle/wave differentiation is based on light acting like it has mass. Energy des not have mass, this is a fact, you can't weigh heatwaves. Heat waves are energy, and it doesn't have particles, there is no Heaton. So the act of light being a particle is light acting as if it had mass.

    • @jamesusespivot
      @jamesusespivot 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ShaggyRedHead actually according to relativity a hot object (e.g a hot cup of coffee) has more inertial mass and weighs more than a cold object (e.g if the coffee cools down) with the same intrinsic mass.
      Light particles are massless on their own but if you trap light in a box of mirrors the box will gave more mass than before. it's the interaction between particles that gives them mass.
      even quarks and leptons are massless without the higgs field. Even then, most of the mass of an atom/proton/neutron doesn't come from the higgs but from the strong force binding energy.
      So pure energy, even just potential energy (like being on a mountain vs on the ground) does have mass. It's weird and counterintuitive, but it's true.

    • @TheWriter960
      @TheWriter960 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamesusespivot Ah, but therein lies the question! See, if I remember my physics correctly (it's been awhile) it's called inertial mass because of vibration, the hot coffee has more inertial mass because the atoms are accelerating faster than the atoms of the cool coffee. It's the reason when you catch a ball, it feels heavier right before it stops moving, one of the off-shoots to one of Newtons laws (can't ever remember the numbers) "motion tends to stay in motion, rest tends to stay at rest" Yada yada.
      But that brings up a question: Is there an equal and opposite reaction when light hits something? Yes, but an energetic reaction, not a mass one. The answer then would be heat, the box gains inertial mass because light causes heat, which cause the atoms of the box to vibrate faster.
      My statement still stands though, the phrase "light particle pretending to have mass." Is a redundancy.

    Why do gems have internal organs at all? What's the point of, for example, making an entire digestive system when they have a lifetime of energy already built in?

    • @deffdefying4803
      @deffdefying4803 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Phesheya Bhembe
      They don't have internal organs. They are one solid mass. However, they can shapeshift relevant organ systems when needed - for example, Rose shapeshifted a female reproductive system to have sex with Greg (sorry to be so crude but it's true) and give birth to Steven, and Amethyst almost constantly has a digestive system just to handle the sheer volumes of food she eats.

    So within your theory, it's entirely possible that humans will ultimately adapt to the same physiology of gems:
    *We upload our minds to AI
    *For some reason (there are plenty of good ones) we opt to store our consciousness on independent chips instead of in a cloud
    *Holographic manipulation of light becomes the preferred method of generating objects, but it's too fragile for objects such as chips containing everything a person is, so instead the AI is stored in the crystalline structures of hard gemstones
    *Because of a failure to sufficiently in a timely fashion dismantle (person reading this hits mute button until I'm done with my Marxist jargon... hits fast forward... hits fast forward again) the process of reproduction becomes controlled by the Burg- large entities as opposed to individuals, and so society begins structuring itself more similarly to hives.
    Hey...
    Does anyone else think it's weird that the gems could take literally any form, but even homeworld defaults to humanoid?
    Hey, wasn't it established early on that Homeworld did have access to time travel at at least one point in their history?

      We know that they will live forever if not shattered, so they must have access to some form of perpetual energy. Unless you have some idea of how they could take in more without any ability to metabolize food, and considering that enough Gems operate in deep space that they can't be solar-powered.

      I was thinking that they where technically limited, but it lasts so long that they tend to be destroyed before they run out of power, probably eons.
      I mean, the kindergarten turns externally placed life to dust AFTER it has been rendered inactive, so that’s some pretty powerful energy harvesting.

    • @AJUniverse
      @AJUniverse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelfixedsys7463 The kindergartens harvest minerals from the soil, not energy. Things can't grow there anymore because there are no minerals for plants to feed on. After all, plants get their energy from the sun, not the earth.
      If Gems are limited in their lifespan that contradicts details that we have gotten straight from multiple reliable characters who claim their lifespans to be infinite. I don't see any reason to assume that all of those characters were lying.

      I’m not a chemist, but can’t a large number of elements be used to generate electricity?
      Even if they’re in relatively small amounts in earth soil, they completely remove everything from the soil.
      And Gems are a limited system, sentient but limited. At some point a large number might as well be referred to as effectively infinite.
      I’m suggesting that they’re ABSURDLY efficient batteries btw, something humans would never be able to create alone.
      Plants don’t turn to dust normally, they just die.
      Also, Matter is another form of energy...you said this in your “Steven breathing in space” theory.
      Perhaps in the SU Universe, “philosophers stones” are real, and sentient.
      The liquid coagulates minerals into an unfinished computer, pressure crystallises it, and it uses reserve energy from pressurisation and the juice itself to turn small amounts of the minerals into energy through alchemical fission, which fuels more Mineral collecting, gem-side.
      Eventually after it has collected enough energy (usually over a few centuries) a Fully developed gem emerges, really to kick names and take ass.

    • @AJUniverse
      @AJUniverse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelfixedsys7463 Yeah, but not in great enough quantities to do what Gems do. And you don't find them in soil generally speaking.
      You mean Gems? Yeah, they do. But there is no "energy" in the soil, except maybe ambient heat from the sun.
      I don't know what you mean by a "limited system". Do you mean that Gems are a closed system? Because they aren't. They release energy. And no, a value cannot approach infinite. A value is either infinite or it isn't.
      It doesn't matter how efficient something is. A battery without perpetual energy cannot be infinite.
      They do if they are structurally unsound, i.e. they didn't have enough minerals to build themselves properly.
      Matter can be converted to energy, but that also requires huge amounts of energy to do. I'm not sure what philosopher's stones have to do with that, though, since alchemy isn't real, and Gems aren't magic.
      No. The liquid coagulate draws minerals from the soil which is uses to solidify into a crystalline form. There is no nebulous supply of generic energy in the earth that can be absorbed, unless, again, you mean ambient heat, but that is negligible.
      The earth gets all of its energy from the sun. Our ecosystem is an open, solar-powered system. Plants and animals are simply able to convert that energy into a chemical form, that they are able to process, through photosynthesis and digestion respectively. Gems aren't exposed to the sun when they are forming and they have no way to metabolize energy into a chemical form. Their energy must come from somewhere else.

    magic IS science, actually. and it's not JUST science, because science isn't "just"/disenchanting. magic is just what we use to describe something we've conceptualized (sometimes even performed) that hasn't been explained scientifically or confirmed to work in practice, but could *plausibly* work if we were to advance enough in our knowledge of how the universe works. just wanted to nitpick that bit, cuz I'm tired of all these science nerds completely dismissing magic as if it's nonsensical and holding science above it as if science couldn't just as well be considered magic.
