Maybe her inconsistent characterizations are supposed to mimic that of someone who is trying to assimilate. Assimilation isn't a linear graph. It's bumpy and sometimes there are ups and downs. Or maybe it's unintentionally inconsistent and I'm reading too much into it.

Steven Universe biggest problem is that the viewpoint is firmly connected to Steven and that means if he is not present there is very little room for development of the other characters. This became obvious to me after watching Star season 2 where several episodes worth of screen time was dedicated to developing other characters. This lead to good character building and story development that could not have been possible if the viewpoint had been fixed on Marco and Star Butterfly and as a result we got a very good season finale and a happy fanbase. I think relaxing the rule that we can only see things from Stevens perspective would be good for the show.
To me, she's a PTSD and depression survivor trying to do the best she can. She's been abused and traumatized and that's why she is the way she is. She wants to make sure she won't be further abused before opening up to the others. Steven has shown that he won't abuse her or anyone and so she trusts him
This is a really good way to explain the inconsistencies in her character. However, I do think that the real reason is that sometimes the writers want her to be a serious character and other times they want to use her for humor.
It's nice to hear someone talk about Lapis who clearly cares about her but also doesn't shy away or try to sugarcoat what she did to Jasper. I see a lot of fans coddling her and acting like she needs to be protected, even though personally my favorite aspect of the character is how much she can fuck shit up. She's obviously stronger than all the CG's, she can take care of herself
I love Lapis but I feel like the writers dropped the ball when it came to her interactions with the towns people. Learning to love earth is just as much about loving plants and animals (and whatever Pumpkin is) as much as the people in it. Steven was her gateway drug but she never progressed any further. We need to see her forming more human relationships if she is to break from her emotional shell.
Honestly, all of the Gems need to do that since they barely interact with the Humans as is, and when ever actually do so, they do it in a very condescending manner.

Because in the scene where they were scrolling through silhouettes of gems in Blue Diamond's court, I saw a few gems with a Lapis gemstone but they were dressed and shaped completely different. and they couldn't have been different gems since it seems as if every gem has a distinct cut and shape.

Her developing off-screen could truly make it very confusing for the audience, though.

Lapis is the Jessica Jones of Steven Universe. I think the inconsistent characterization is that she evolved into an exploration of a damaged person that uses pain as a coping mechanism. Everyone knows a Lapis and those people ARE inconsistent to some degree and dismissive like you said. Those people have to choose to heal but how does that impact their relationships? For Lapis, it seems like the Crew have settled on her being aloof. Maybe reconciling with Jasper will help...

I liked your video, here are my thoughts on Lapis Lazuli's character. Since there is no stated explanation in the show, I think the reason our Lapis could not integrate back into Homeworld society could have been the other Lazulis. We know there are more than our Lapis because Peridot stated that "Lapis Lazulis are particularly partial to water" or something like that, meaning that it is an attribute to multiple Lazulis. If they were involved in terraforming Earth, they could have had something to do with the rebellion. That's unlikely though, so something else could have happened causing Homeworld to basically disgrace their nobility status. This could have happened after Lapis was put in the mirror, or be the cause of that happening (meaning she lied about her origin story). We know that Amethysts and Rubies act like others of their own gemkind are close family. Even the corrupted Centipede gems wanted to be together. So Lapis returning to Homeworld only to find her "family" gone would have been devastating. Perhaps explaining why she's reluctant to join a group that is being persecuted by homeworld in case they get taken away from her too. This is just a random thing I thought of to explain why cartoon about family and friendship would have such a lonely character, I don't necessarily think it is true or likely.
Honestly Stephen should just pull a Zuko in season 5 and go on a life changing journey with all the CGs, Lapis, and any other Gem who is willing to go on that journey with him at that point.

Well, you have to understand that Lapis arrived on Homeworld very randomly, and as we can see Homeworld does not take well randomness since they appear very organized and keep track of everything. Gems don't just come and go as they please, so when Lapis Lazuli suddenly arrived there after nearly 5,000 years of absence, I'm pretty sure she'd stand out to other Gems as not an ordinary Lapis, not to mention the confusion she's have of all the new technology and Gems. So there's that.

And ever since her return from homeworld, she's been confused and distant from her purpose...unlike Peridot. What she was originally still baffles me though. From what the show brought so far I believe she was like a lieutenant or evaluator. I even heard someone theorize that she was an important scout for new colonies.
I think you bring up a few good points many of which overlap with the admitedly limited characterization of her I made in my one of my own videos. My videos are about Jasper so it's not as in depth. Though there are a few things I would maybe interprit differently such as her reaction to being right about Ruby, I largely think you are on the right track. I haven't studied Lapis specifically but my personal interpritation of when she was relieved about being right about Ruby was that since she was still very badly adjusted to Earth emotionally but Peridot was the same in other aspects, her maladjustment didn't reflect badly on her and was therefor nothing to be ashamed of, But when Navy comes along and raises the bar for what is normal, Lapis self image would be brought low. This would be especially important if she used to be an important gem and has high expctations of herself from birth. So she is relieved because Navy didn't actually represent a new obstacle for her to overcome emotionally. If that was what you meant I must have just misunderstood you. Good video!

Lapis is one of my favorite characters in the show, though I admit her characterization seemed a tad inconsistent, and that frustrated me. But, hearing it framed this way puts it in a whole new light! It also makes me think differently about Lapis' growing relationship with Peridot. While I think we've been meant to feel like this is Lapis healing emotionally and for the better, it could be seen that Peridot is also just a distraction, harmless fun for Lapis to have instead of bettering herself. I say also because nothing in Steven Universe is just one thing. That's one of the themes. I really hope the show explores this, at least a little bit.
It shattered itself the minute steven pulls lapis' gem out of it. So that specific mirror is destroyed, but you can attach any gem to basically anything that she will be trapped in it just as well.
Interesting, I agree that Lapis seems to be inconsistently and poorly characterized and here motivations don't seem consistent or clear. Sugar clearly sees Lapis as a complex character with elements of victimization and emotional manipulation. Maybe they are just taking too long and winding of a path to where they are going, the audience is sophisticated but not infinity so. Maybe the problem is how the crewniverse writes episodes so independently, with stuff like alone at sea done by Sugar who dose the heavy hitting episodes and other writers just use Lapis as a prop because even they don't understand what she is supposed to be or what motivates her.
No, that was Peridot. The mission to Earth on the green hand ship was Peridot's mission. She was in charge. Jasper was her subordinate. Peridot is the one who decided to bring Lapis along by force. That's even confirmed in the show. It's the entire reason why Lapis refused to befriend Peridot at first and why Peridot ended up apologizing to her. Like, Jasper was involved and I mention that, but Jasper was not singularly at fault, and certainly wasn't the one that Lapis was actually mad at: the one who put her in that mirror.
I don't think Steven is the character Lapis needs to talk with the develop. I think Pearl would be a better fit, as a gem who has had someone like Steven (Rose) who helped her change her person. Steven will give support but Lapis needs something more of a rigid person who can make her face her problems, rather than giving her more time and letting her push it off. Also, I really like her development so far. I rarely (never actually, but I assume they exist) see people who like how she is now. She behaves much more like how a person with a similar upbringing would. I've known people in my life who have had similar trauma and act just as aloof and yet trying so hard to move past it. It's a time consuming process. For an immortal character who is learning to cope in a human way, it's very interesting. Finally, I'm praying there's no Jasper redemption arc. That's all I ever hear people talk about. I didn't like Jasper UNTIL she was being corrupted with the Diamond line. She's really only effective as a character in moments of strong antagonism to me. I never hated her, but I feel Jasper being "redeemed" should never happen. That it would be best reserved for a series finale where they're healing all the gems and they have to confront or talk her down.
Fortello I completely agree. I'm one of the few that exist that actually still like lapis and the development she has gone through although not perfectly executed, still understandable and relatable (to me at least). I'm also against the idea of redeeming jasper, the more I hear it the more I wish it doesn't come true. I just think she works better as an antagonist and I know they wouldn't turn her into a goodie two shoes but redeeming her just doesn't feel right (to me) like it would have to be a very strong justified reason for her to turn against what she believes, what she stands for. But even then I would still like jasper to stay as an established antagonist showing that no matter how hard some one tries to make you better or see the greater good, there are just some people who won't change thus showing a dark and real side of life.
I like Lapis, but sorry, I think she is a bad person, well, gem. She had a rough past, I get it, but she chosed it. She chosed to fuse with Jasper for example, she chosed to keep fused, Jasper wasn't forcing anything. And then she keeps whining about it and blaming others. Besides, she treated others like shit. Lapis like all people is a terrible person and like every one has done vary regrettable things and I hope they use her to show some one being able to get past the fear that comes with facing bad choses and is able it apologies for her actions and forgive Any that's done her wrong in her probably extensive list of people we don't know but starting with jasper if her and jasper and get past that terrible thing and co exist with out hateing each outher woundent that be amazing if they can pull that off
no one asks about Lapis’ past because no one wants or needs to know. but Lapis insists on throwing a fit about it still and being “broken”... like, she has shown multiple times that she is capable of being kind and witty, but yet she’s still basically an asshole. none of the characters even care about her past anymore, they just care for her well-being (after all, there must be a reason for her to act rude all the time). Lapis still doesn’t realize the fact that the characters care for her. it’s ridiculous... her ignorance and stubbornness gets old real fast.

Amber Goodson No. rose, amethyst, sapphire, Ruby, and the Jaspers in the zoo have circle gems. Our Jasper and those Jaspers have different cuts.

I say also because nothing in Steven Universe is just one thing. That's one of the themes. I really hope the show explores this, at least a little bit.

It shattered itself the minute steven pulls lapis' gem out of it. So that specific mirror is destroyed, but you can attach any gem to basically anything that she will be trapped in it just as well.

Interesting, I agree that Lapis seems to be inconsistently and poorly characterized and here motivations don't seem consistent or clear. Sugar clearly sees Lapis as a complex character with elements of victimization and emotional manipulation. Maybe they are just taking too long and winding of a path to where they are going, the audience is sophisticated but not infinity so.
Maybe the problem is how the crewniverse writes episodes so independently, with stuff like alone at sea done by Sugar who dose the heavy hitting episodes and other writers just use Lapis as a prop because even they don't understand what she is supposed to be or what motivates her.
I know Jasper will probably get a redemption arc, but I don't want her to..I feel satisfied having some antagonists left perverse

People keep forgetting that jasper prisoned her first so....
No, that was Peridot. The mission to Earth on the green hand ship was Peridot's mission. She was in charge. Jasper was her subordinate. Peridot is the one who decided to bring Lapis along by force. That's even confirmed in the show. It's the entire reason why Lapis refused to befriend Peridot at first and why Peridot ended up apologizing to her. Like, Jasper was involved and I mention that, but Jasper was not singularly at fault, and certainly wasn't the one that Lapis was actually mad at: the one who put her in that mirror.
I don't think Steven is the character Lapis needs to talk with the develop. I think Pearl would be a better fit, as a gem who has had someone like Steven (Rose) who helped her change her person. Steven will give support but Lapis needs something more of a rigid person who can make her face her problems, rather than giving her more time and letting her push it off.
Also, I really like her development so far. I rarely (never actually, but I assume they exist) see people who like how she is now. She behaves much more like how a person with a similar upbringing would. I've known people in my life who have had similar trauma and act just as aloof and yet trying so hard to move past it. It's a time consuming process. For an immortal character who is learning to cope in a human way, it's very interesting.
Finally, I'm praying there's no Jasper redemption arc. That's all I ever hear people talk about. I didn't like Jasper UNTIL she was being corrupted with the Diamond line. She's really only effective as a character in moments of strong antagonism to me. I never hated her, but I feel Jasper being "redeemed" should never happen. That it would be best reserved for a series finale where they're healing all the gems and they have to confront or talk her down.
Fortello I completely agree. I'm one of the few that exist that actually still like lapis and the development she has gone through although not perfectly executed, still understandable and relatable (to me at least). I'm also against the idea of redeeming jasper, the more I hear it the more I wish it doesn't come true. I just think she works better as an antagonist and I know they wouldn't turn her into a goodie two shoes but redeeming her just doesn't feel right (to me) like it would have to be a very strong justified reason for her to turn against what she believes, what she stands for. But even then I would still like jasper to stay as an established antagonist showing that no matter how hard some one tries to make you better or see the greater good, there are just some people who won't change thus showing a dark and real side of life.

I like Lapis, but sorry, I think she is a bad person, well, gem. She had a rough past, I get it, but she chosed it. She chosed to fuse with Jasper for example, she chosed to keep fused, Jasper wasn't forcing anything. And then she keeps whining about it and blaming others. Besides, she treated others like shit. She destroied the most precious thing of Peridot, the tape, and she didn't even apologized for it, almost drowned Connie and Steven and said only: "I almost drown a lot of people", she is such a jerk, probably because of the treatment she received of her past high status. Idk, she has yet a long way to go

Lapis like all people is a terrible person and like every one has done vary regrettable things and I hope they use her to show some one being able to get past the fear that comes with facing bad choses and is able it apologies for her actions and forgive Any that's done her wrong in her probably extensive list of people we don't know but starting with jasper if her and jasper and get past that terrible thing and co exist with out hateing each outher woundent that be amazing if they can pull that off

no one asks about Lapis’ past because no one wants or needs to know. but Lapis insists on throwing a fit about it still and being “broken”... like, she has shown multiple times that she is capable of being kind and witty, but yet she’s still basically an asshole. none of the characters even care about her past anymore, they just care for her well-being (after all, there must be a reason for her to act rude all the time). Lapis still doesn’t realize the fact that the characters care for her. it’s ridiculous... her ignorance and stubbornness gets old real fast.

I never liked Lapis. I hate victim complex characters. EVERY SINGLE THING they do is written off because of their suffered or whatever. They get away with everything and in this case, she is somehow excused from being a total bitch to people. All the gems (Except for maybe Peridot) have gone to war, get over yourself.

It's not incongruous that Lapis is guilty around Steven & Greg, but dismissive of the world. They are people to her; the other humans are walking statistics.
Jason Fuentes that doesn't really make sense. Her being dismissive of humans was never really a trait for her. And it doesn't make sense that she doesn't consider other humans people since that's never brought up and statistics also wasn't really a characteristic of her either.
