- How to get rid of spotted spurge weeds and prostrate spurge weeds in your lawn is a question commonly asked by lawn care enthusiasts. Spotted or Prostrate spurge are especially difficult weeds to get rid of in your lawn. Typical methods such as mowing your Bermuda lawn at the correct height doesn't work as well for these types of weeds because they can survive at heights much lower than others.
Weed control can be a full time job and really takes the fun out of your lawn care program. The weed control that I like best doesn't involve a weed spray or chemical like Spectracide, Roundup or Image weed killer. Spotted spurge is one of the weeds that Spectracide can kill. In a mass spotted spurge outbreak, using Spectracide might end up being the option you have to go with.
The best long term weed control is to grow a healthy lawn and mow it regularly at the correct height for your grass type. This creates a natural weed control because the tight turf creates a situation where weeds have trouble competing with the lawn for the resources they need to grow.
The best way to immediately get rid of weeds without killing the grass in your lawn is to simply pull the weeds manually. That said, chemicals can help initially kill broadleaf weeds and other lawn problems like crabgrass.
Granular products like Spectracide weed control work slower than the liquid versions but it is also much safer for the lawn. When applied at the correct rates, it should help kill prostrate or spotted spurge without harming your turfgrass. When it comes to herbicides you want to use as little as necessary to kill the weeds and nothing else. Granular weed control like Spectracide also contains Dithiopyr which is a pre-emergent to prevent new weeds from growing back once they're gone. Remember all we're using Spectracide for is to buy us time to grow a healthy lawn. In a pinch, it's a good tool for getting rid of spotted spurge.

Ron, I was glad to see you put that in (at the end) about the sap. Most all plants in that Family (Euphorbiaceae) have that white milky sap which can cause dermatitis or other issues in many people. There are many species of plants in that Family (crown-of-thorns, poinsettia, etc.) so caution is advisable.

I appreciate you confirming that it was the right call and for dropping some science on me. 😀 As I'm seeing in the comments, manual weeding might not be the best option for getting rid of this particular nuisance. I just hate applying herbicides to my lawn if I can help it.
@@RonHenry Nothing wrong with manual weeding. Besides, sometimes herbicides can cause more harm than good. Additionally, some weeds are easily enough pulled. The problem may arise with seeds or plant parts left behind after weeding though.

Your correct it comes up spotted alot within the open area of a lawn and comes up more along edges of sidewalks, streets, driveways, and any area that heats up during the late Spring and Summer months.

Interesting that you brought up pulling these weeds. I tried herbicides for years will little results. One year I just decided to start pulling them up. It was a lot of work but I noticed I did not see near the spreading when I did that. Still try to use some herbicide but usually have to reapply 2-3 times. These weeds are nasty. Thanks for the video

I keep my 10x25 ft section of lawn nearly weed-free, plus, it is therefore, is thick, lush, green, mostly only one variety, really pretty lawn.

I have an outbreak, primarily on the south side of the lawn. I've been pulling it by hand but one area is really filled with it. Just sprayed with the Spectracide Weed Stop. I hope it works.

Another great video, I use spectricide liquid. How do you thicken up your lawn so that the spurge doesn't come back. I also get tons of spurge in the cracks in my driveway and patio.
Hi Leesah. The best way to thicken u the lawn is to mow frequently at the correct heights. For Bermuda that's 1.5" and lower. Spurge is pretty nasty in that it can live just fine at those heights. Still, growing a healthy thick lawn is one of the best ways to reduce the amount of weeds you have to deal with. I really only have issues with spurge in the areas that were thinned out by top dressing and a few areas near the sidewalk edge. For the areas where you're not worried about grass like sidewalks, driveway and patio, you can either burn them or spray them with round up. That's the only areas really where I use roundup on my lawn. Let me know if I can help with anything else. 👍😎
I have been pulling spurge for 8 years. It is in the lawn, flower beds, pots and cracks on the sidewalk. It is like purslane and sedges, really hard to permanently get rid of. I even hire my grandson to come and help pull it every spring. I bought a product that was just for spurge, and it still comes back. My gardens rely on plants that self seed, so using a pre-emergent is only helpful on the lawn, which is St. Aug. I have large flower borders so I have to be very careful with spraying post emergents. Spurge puts out seeds on the undersides and when pulling them I am careful to pinch the center and pull it up with the root, while taking care not to drop the seeds. Really hard to do when it is tangled up in the grass.

I’d bet seeds were introduced with your sand mixture. I’ve had very similar outbreaks also Especially thin or recently seeded areas. My three more prevalent weeds have been spurge, Virginia buttonweed, and burrweed. I fortunately caught early and was able to control. But last year I wasn’t as vigilant and they kicked my butt
You're probably right Frankie. The thin area combined with the drop dressing is probably what got me. What's odd is it's only an issue near the patio. Out near the rocks where I also top dressed, there was no problem. I'm staying on top of it. How did you get rid of it?
Ron Henry I also hand pull smaller outbreaks but when it got ugly, I used my cocktail of Celsius and certainty.
I thought about Preen One. But it is Expensive as all get out. I'll try some Spectracide Weed Stop.
I think you’ll get good results with Spectracide JoeD. Be sure to apply it when the turf is damp either from watering or morning dew
A good way to identify spurge is if you break the stem it has a milky substance that will cone out. Purslane looks very similar, but doesnt have that milky stuff. *wrote before you brought it up*

I always deal with spurge and it’s such a pain. This has summer has been the first summer ever without a single bit of spurge in my lawn. I see it only in my flower beds. What I did differently was use Indaziflam for my fall pre emergent last year (zero poa as a result) which freed me up to go with a max yearly rate of prodiamine all during this spring. I did one 6 month rate of prodiamine WG in March and then sprayed same rate again in April. This puts me at the yearly max, but that’s ok because I’ll use Indaziflam again in the fall (unless I overseed). It did the trick because I have zero weeds and haven’t had to pull anything at all yet. Grass greened up fine etc. Only issue is indaziflam is EXPENSIVE, I was lucky enough to get a friend on the lawn discord to hook me up with a small amount. That stuff is amazing!
Very nice Dangerlawn. I'll have ton look into indaziflam. I have a friend that works in lawn care so he might have some or be able to get me some. Are there any negatives to it as far as damage to the turf? Thanks for sharing the experience. It sounds like it could be a good solution.
Ron Henry the way it works is that it’s very damaging to the top inch or so of soil roots and last a few months. Bermuda roots are super deep and very tolerant. Poa roots are very shallow. You don’t want to put it down in the growing season (prodiamine is safer then), you put it down as the grass is going to bed anyways and it keeps winter weed stuff from growing during the dormant season. After applying you have to very lightly water it in. You don’t want it going too far down because you need those deep Bermuda roots to help green up next spring. After that initial watering it’s not very mobile in the soil. It kept all the poa out of my lawn this year, but I also combined it with some monument herbicide. I had the only clean winter lawn in the neighborhood.
Tenacity kills it but not the preemerge. What would work with Kentucky blue grass? Suggestions?

While pulling the dead crab grass in my lawn I noticed it was intertwined with Spurs loss of it Phyllis. I don't think was dead. Its fall Socialwork the crabgrass came out easier as its dying but of i leave this stuff will my pre emergent get it in the spring?

I have used Roundup for lawns on the spurge I have. It seems to work but it seems to take at least two or three weeks. And during that time I find even more. I'm getting tired of spurge. It's not like it is entire lawnful. In fact most of it is in the garden. But it's a pain.
You can prevent spurge with pre-emergent Rodger. Has to be applied in the early spring before it starts growing though.

My ground is hard clay and I have bald spots where the Bermuda is having a tough time to grow. I try watering for a long time but the water just seems to sit on top of the soil. Aerate or gypsum? Any other ideas ?
Heya Rolex. I'd aerate and top dress those problem areas. To your point, any grass (even Bermuda) is going to have a tough time in less than ideal soil conditions. I good aerate coupled with some fresh organic material should do the trick. 😎👍
Spurge is very hard to get rid in different grass types, such as Kentucky blue grass, and Bermuda grass. Can ortho weed b gone prevent spurge? What product or method beside manual weeding prevents spurge in common Bermuda ??
Hi Andrew. The Ortho product and Spectracide amzn.to/32P2ZDw are both good options at a reasonable price. Options that are a bit more hardcore but will also cause some temporary yellowing are Speedzone and Dismiss. I would start with the Ortho and Spectracide and then decide if you need to go the more hardcore route.
Ron Henry is the granular or liquid of the spectracide more effective ?
Need help with measuring prodiamine for my lawn. I have about 12632 sq ft, and I put down Prodiamine at a rate of 3.48 for 4 months protection. I feel like this is too much, please let me know what the right amount.
3.48 what? pounds? ounces? Are you using granular or liquid and what's your grass type?
I tried on years past to manually pull spurge. It is, for me at least, too time consuming and often fruitless. I am trying a product by Ortho that is a spot spray. Hoping for good results.

I noticed Spectracide has a concentrate equivalent to the granules you use. It seems to be much more cost effective. Ever used it?

@@RonHenry I bought some the other day but I mistakenly grabbed the one that doesn't kill crabgrass so gonna exchange it and will let you know the results.
So apparently Home Depot stocks the concentrate with Crabgrass killer. Lowes does not(at least not at my store). It cost $8 for 40oz and label says it will cover 6,250 sqft. I still haven't applied it bc it says to avoid rain for 24 hours after application. Will let you know how it goes. Ron I bought a bottle of Celcius herbicide off Amazon and for the life of me it will not kill the chamberbitter or Spurge in my lawn. Have u ever experienced this?
I've not experience that. It's really good against spurge for sure. Are you certain you're mixing it at the correct rates? Using surfactant with it?
Is this stuff like nutsedge where if you pull it manually it will grow back because the roots are below ground and it comes back? I have been getting this stuff the past 2 summers now and it's right along the edge of my flower beds, like you said, not much competition. I usually use Image for sedge, will this work well on it?

Pulling it up is a temporary solutions b\c I got it in my driveway after having a load of nice thick layer of fresh rocks put down. I pulled them up by hand and still they pop up somewhere else. Roundup helps alot, but I don't want to make a habit of using it once every month. I read somewhere that boiling water helps kill them. What a frustrating weed to deal with!!!!!!!!
Spurge is a huge pain to get rid of Dianne. Roundup will work temporarily like you said, but what we might do is the next time you kill the spurge, try applying some pre-emergent to the area. Did pulling by hand work? I bought a property that had a spurge weed in the front yard. Every 2 months I'll pull about half a 4 gallon bucket of spurge out of my 150sq ft front lawn. It comes back 3 weeks later. Not sure what to do. Most of the good chemicals are banned because I live in Canada. We just get Iron and vinegar.
Hi Thomas. I ended up having to spray Dismiss and Speedzone to kill the spurge off. Pulling them by hand knocked them back but I kept seeing stragglers. I got tired of it so just sprayed them out.

I can use glyphosphate so I'll probably make a little containment device out of half a water bottle to minimize how much overspray there is and try that this year. Spurge without chemicals makes a fake lawn look really temping :p

I bought a house where a tree had been removed and there was a large area of bare ground. Not for long. I'm in central Kansas and it has been an Indian summer, cooler and wetter than normal. The spurge is really bad. I just moved back after retiring and I don't remember this weed being that bad. Is it drought tolerant,? Can I change the ph? Nuke it,?

Hi Brad. You can use Dismiss or Speedzone but they will discolor your lawn. Just depends on how aggressive you want to be.

I've used 2 different mixtures Matt. Earlier this season I used a sand/top soil blend. Last month I used straight river sand.

Ohhhhhh. It will grow back. Shouldn’t have to put new seed down. It depends on what kind of grass you have. Warm season grasses like Bermuda tend to recover quickly.
Hard to pull it by the root though when it’s tangled with the Bermuda

Probably a good idea to spray a preemergent right after you too dress in case weed seed is in the soil.
Some people do it.
Celsius and MSM will handle it. I believe Speedzone will also do it. It's actually an irritant so he's right about wearing gloves when weeding it.

Yep. I just learned that spurge is a Euphorbia. All Euphorbia is toxic to humans and God knows what other species. I have a huge patch to deal with.😞 What a nice looking community lawn park you have there!

Tried the spectracide for spotted spurge. Didn’t kill anything at all. Waste of money and I even followed the directions to a “T”. Looks like I have to reorder speed zone

Hi Samuel. In Spectracide there are a few of them Mecoprop, Dicamba and Dithiopyr. I need a herbicide that kills spotted surge, yellow nutsedge and crabgrass. I can't find a weed killer that kills all three without killing my grass.
I have 2 herbicides that meet that requirement. golfcourselawn.store/products/celsius-and-certainty-herbicide-kit-with-surfactant-and-dye Celsius will take care of the spurge and Certainty will take care of the sedges. Both can be mixed and sprayed at the same time and they're both temperature safe, meaning they'll kill the weeds and not your grass. Warm season grass only.

The worst thing you can do is pull spurge. For every plant you remove you drop scads of the seeds that are hanging from the vines like miniature grapes. You can't see them, you can certainly spread them.

I bought something called spurge power. Killed the spurge in about a week

Spurge Power did nothing for me. I’ve been through 5 lawn care companies and they have all given up on my spurge problem claiming it is resistant to all products they have. It has ruined a beautiful lawn in the Florida panhandle. One of the companies has 3,000 lawns they treat and mine is the worst infestation they have seen.
Vinegar soap and water Salt will take care of it

@@RonHenry At minute 1:39 you clearly see the three leaf form of annual lespedeza. Spurge does not have that tryptic leaf pattern. Both can be treated with the same herbicides, so it really doesn't matter.
Tell the readers how the plant grows. There is a single root center and tendrils that spread.

Totally Claremont. You can use liquid herbicides like Dismiss or Speedzone. For granulars Spectracide is a good option. Spectracide is the only one that own discolor your grass though.
