    Eleven mill allen's are a bit of an oddity, but yes, every now and then some engineer will specify their use and getting the appropriate wrench can be a bit of a trial.
    Recently a friend of mine thought it would be a good idea to buy an old BSA Gold Star 500 motorcycle. He was doing a bit of work on it and there was a fair amount of cussing going on when he found that his tools, either imperial or metric, simply did not fit properly. I watched quietly for a few minutes and then asked the question, "Have you ever heard of British Standard Whitworth?" He gave me a look like I was from the dark side of the moon and I then went on to explain about how England, being an island and all, had developed their very own standard for thread pitches and bolt heads. He called a couple of local tool emporiums only to be told he would have to go to the dreaded Snap On dealer. He called them and they named prices that gave him heart palpitations. I just smiled as his frustration grew. He told me I was a smug SOB who seemed to be enjoying his plight and I admitted it. Then I told him, "I'm going home now. I might have to dig out an old tool box that I seldom use these days. It's the tool box that I used to use when I rode Nortons." He called me about an hour later and asked if he could borrow my "Norton tools". Moral of the story is never ever get rid of old tools. Never can tell when they might come in handy.
    I'm just waiting now until he loses a bolt. You see, this smug SOB also happens to have another old tool box filled with spare nuts and bolts along with a tap and die set from when I rode Nortons.................

    The bridge is out?? On the way to the ice cream shop??? Say WHAT?!?!?
    I'd call that an EMERGENCY.... I bet NOW you wish you woulda got your own Taylor Ice Cream Machine.... Heh heh!
    Dodge Challenger! hahaha! I did the fuel pumps in mine the other day.... omg. Now, to a superpro ace tech like yourself, I'm sure it's a yawner, but to a home gamer like me, holy crap. That tank lock ring, SO glad I bought the OTC tool... (OTC Tank Lock Ring Tool, #6599, bought on amazon, not a sponsor, is actually a nice tool.) Still needed a breaker bar, but I got those off... then the whole thing, with, tie a string to the lines, pull out the passenger side pump, untie your string, tie it to the new lines, pull the new lines on the new pump back through with the string.... Hahahah! I was like, are you kidding me?? Is this really what they do??
    But I got them in, and it is no longer a Dodge Paperweight. It runs. It is alive. It's an SRT8 again. It's actually running really good. And there's no leaks, no gas smell, so I guess I got the new O-rings on, and got the lock rings back on properly....
    I hate the smell of gasoline anyways, so I had the whole backseat area covered in plastic & beach towels, lest a drop of gas touch my pristine interior on my precious toy summer car.... I'll tell you what, I'm definitely older than you, but, crawling in & out of that teeny backseat 100 times and contorting around like a Cirque De Soleil performer almost killed me. Holy crap. I took an extra pain pill this morning. I have muscles I didn't even know I had, in some strange places, that are doing a lot of complaining this morning....
    I'm sure you are not impressed, and I'm sure you could do that job in your sleep. That is not the point. The point, Sir, is that, watching your videos, has given me the confidence, to take a run at jobs like that... and, I saved $1500 bucks, doing it myself, so, Thank You Sir. Thank you for doing what you do. I appreciate it, and I hope you keep it up.
    If you can do it.... I can do it. I'm real sore, but I'm feeling pretty smug about doing it myself.... Heh heh heh!

    • @MikeBrown-ii3pt
      @MikeBrown-ii3pt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Patrick Morrissey I feel your pain! I'm 51 years young (or so I thought!) myself, and have a part time shop for a few extra $ on the side. The job I had last Friday was nowhere near as complicated, but, just as painful for a day or two, as yours. I replaced the shift tube and plunger assembly in a friends 2001 Ford Ranger. 4 hours of laying upside down, standing on my head, and working blind under the dash got the job done. 5 days later, the muscles I'd forgotten about feel better, however, I can still feel where the drivers side seat belt buckle was digging into my ribs!
      I also had a "ya big dummy" moment as I was putting it back together. Since the 2 T-15 screws holding the hood release were the hardest to get out (except for the 2 that you have to take out from behind the column to remove the assembly that I'd already put back in), I figured I'd put them back in first. When I went to replace the plastic trim piece on the bottom of the dash, I remembered that those 2 screws are the ones that secure the middle of the trim. I literally crawled out of the cab, hung my head in shame and said to myself "YA BIG DUMMY"!
      Anyway, the job got done and the truck is back on the road doing truck stuff. As always, I congratulated myself with a few cold beverages after finishing.

    • @patrickmorrissey2271
      @patrickmorrissey2271 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MikeBrown-ii3pt Ohhhh My.... hahahaha! I hate crawling under the dash. My "big dummy" moment came as I wrapped it up.... I got it together somewhat, and thought I'd try it, just to make sure. Car cranks and cranks, sputters, nothing. Fuel gauge on E. I'm like, what in the thunder..... omg. I did not go through this, for it to not work.... Then the little light bulb goes on over my head.... Ohhh yeah that's right, I pumped out all the gas first, so I wouldn't be splashing around in gas the whole time.... Maybe I should pour that back in??? Yeah, maybe.... Pour the gas back in.... Starts right up with authority.... Hahahaha! Ahhh, sometimes I'm glad no one is filming me do these things.... Hahaha! Yeah, cold drinks & cigars are an important part of the process at the end.... Yeah, turning 40 wasn't bad... 50 was a little worse. Yesterday was my 8th birthday. 8 years since I got my stent. So besides that, and the herniated disc, and the knee, and the neck, it's going great, yeah.... Hahahahahhaha! It gets tougher... Your mind says yeah man, let's do this.... Your body, has other ideas....

    • @MikeBrown-ii3pt
      @MikeBrown-ii3pt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Patrick Morrissey I hear ya brother! I've had the light bulb come on many times! As far as the pain/suffering goes, it's like the old Toby Keith song "As Good As I Once Was" says...My body says you can't do this boy but my mind says ohhh yes you can!
      Personally, I don't own/drive anything newer than 1994 (except my semi tractor-I'm an owner operator as my full time job). Younger people ask me why I don't buy new vehicles every few years instead of fixing my old stuff. I always give them 2 reasons. 1) I don't want to, even though I can afford too. 2) Most newer vehicles have no soul!
      Nothing against you or your Challenger because even though I'm a GM guy, I've never liked the 1st gen Camaro, which GM obviously went for with the new ones, and, while the Mustangs aren't bad looking, I just don't identify with them. However, my wife and I had a Challenger as a rental car for a few days last summer while visiting our daughter and twin grandsons in another state. I'm not ashamed to admit that I "connected" with that car! As we were returning that black beauty at the airport, she caught me looking back and said "You wanna keep it don't you? I do too!" Apparently, she'd "connected" with it too! My wife is also a gear head, gotta love her lol!

    @7:14 those rubbers have to come out, and you need to clean underneath them. Those are German ATE brakes (thanks to Daimler), and they even make a special tool for that (looks like a bottle brush Flex-Hone 22mm front 18mm for the rear) to clean out or hone the holes where those rubbers sit in. It corrodes and puts pressure on the rubber that makes your slide pins stick. Common sense to use silicone based oil or grease for the rubber.

    Brake jobs do get monotonous for sure, but unfortunately brakes and ball joints are necessary to keep the lights on and water running. I enjoy powertrain work and really tough diag stuff but it can tie up bays and many consecutive days, plus the vehicle could end up in the parking lot for who knows how long before the customer comes to pay the bill.

    7/16 will fit 11mm, 5/16 will double as a 8mm, 3/4 is only .002 away from 19mm. 5/32 works for 4mm. I've used that knowledge often in factory maintenance.

    • @JW...-oj5iw
      @JW...-oj5iw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Whitaker ... Absolutely correct. A 14mm wrench or socket is actually better on 9/16" hex head bolts or nuts due to being very slightly tighter in fitment.

    • @JW...-oj5iw
      @JW...-oj5iw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Conversely, a ½" wrench or socket fits tighter on a 13mm hex. The catch is that 13mm hex bolts or nuts are very rare.

    As a retired diesel mechanic I have a question about pushing old brake fluid backwards in the system????
    What are your thoughts on doing this???
    The reason I ask is that I attended Bendix Westinghouse air & hydraulic brake school and reverse flow we were told is not a good practice as it is old fluid that has been heated and cooled many cycles and this causes condensation. We were told better to crack the bleed valve and expelled the old fluid!

      The reason we dont do that up here in northern ny or at least i dont do that i cant speak for everyone, is because with the rust issues sometimes cracking a bleeder when u dont have too can open up a whole nother nightmare. Its not as simple as jist cracking open a bleeder around here. Besides ive done brakes like this for years and never once has an issue.

      In Canada metric sets often don't include 11 and16 mm sizes because they match very closely with 7/16 and 5/8 and everyone has those. I had to replace the brakes on my 08 GC Jeep at 150,000 km (about 90,000 mi) because the rotors were pitted, just like the one in this video. The rust on my Jeep was not too bad, except I foolishly decided to replace the struts and I broke the bottom bolt and it had to be cut out with a torch and I ended up needing to buying a very expensive lower control arm.

(Though, I must admit to having occasional beverage control issues when you explain some subtle nuance of the problem at hand.) Please permit me to make a very small criticism, sometimes I sense that you don't know which tool to use. Exhibit A: the 11mm Allen Socket requirement to do the '14 Grand Chereokee brake job - I really think that the secondary use of your small magnetic light should have been employed during the repair as it may have made it a little easier for you to deal with. Just a suggestion! 😁😁

I completed a pad and rotor change easily enough but FAILED to note the installation position of the aforementioned clips. Following my incorrect clip installation, I experienced terrible pedal fade. I thought I had damaged a caliper or something. I then watched your video and noted the clip position . I then repositioned my clip correctly AND magically, the brakes then functioned normally. PS I enjoyed the banter!

    11mm = 0.433" , only 0.066" smaller than 1/2" ! Get a 5/16" diameter bolt and a couple of nut. (5/16" 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑠 𝑎 1/2" 𝑠𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑡 /𝑤𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐ℎ.) Place the nuts on the bolt and lock them together like you said, then chuck it in a bench vise. Maybe 5 or 10 licks with a file on each of the 6 flats and you have an 11mm hex key !

    My 1990 blazer at 182,000 had the original calipers in the front. My brothers 2000 blazer has 274,000 miles and had the original calipers.

    Napper...not a sponsor...to the rescue! My local NAPA recently moved from their old, hole in the wall location that was WELL off the beaten path, to an abandoned grocery store in a shopping center. The "new" store is within a stones throw of one of the 4 auto parts "stores" that employs clueless teenagers punching keyboards only to find that they don't stock that part! Luckily, my NAPA kept their crew of experienced old guys, along with a few youngsters, that actually know what they're doing! Now, they're even open on Sunday, so, I can pretty much pass by the other "stores" when I need something.
    With that said, I'm kinda disappointed in this video. No Baaaaah sound effect for the Fluid Film, no brake cleaner or it's intro music, and, no Big Nasty? What gives here?!? At least the B.F.H. made an appearance lol!

Looks like it needs it and can't wait for the "Test Drive" of the street when their job is completed. The real question is.... Once the street is repaired and all silky smooth.... where will you go to test for loose shocks and undercarriage components?
