To make even faster: When you finish cutting out the interfacing petals (I do 10 layers at a time), leave them stacked and use the rotary cutter to make the little slit in the middle of the whole pile at once. It saves you doing them one at a time with scissors.
Another way to make it easier is don't cut your 10 inch background square. Just fold it in half both directions. You can use your fold lines to place the four orange peels on the 10 inch square. Then you only have ten inch blocks to sew together instead of four-5 inch blocks.
Where would we all e w/o MSQC & such talented quilters!? The only tip I have when making an orange peel quilt is, and I’m sure someone else has already mentioned this but, I sew my orange peels onto a 10” square, instead of 5” squares, it takes out the steps of having to sew the, on 5” squares and then having to sew those together. Happy sewing❤
Wonderful tutorial. So many helpful comments making this great quilt even easier! I found that by stacking a few layers of my layer cake, I could cut 5 orange peels from each 10-inch square - a little twisting and turning does the trick.
Oh my goodness!!!! Now I really want to make this!!! Thank you Jenny and Natalie. I will add this to my “Retirement Schedule of Quilts” I’m going to make 😍😊
This looks like so much fun to make. I’ve been so busy doing taxes I haven’t sewn any quilts since the first of the year. Watching Jenny gets me in the mood again. I love keeping it simple, too. Life is complicated enough.
This is such a fun pattern! Diagonal ombre, print background and solid peels. Endless possibilities! You could use a 10 in block fold on the diagonal and place the peels on the fold. Stitch in place and sew the larger 10 in blocks together.
Natille you look amazing!!! So very proud of all the weight you have lost and it gives me hope that I can lose the weight also. This is one of my favorite quilts!
Wow! That is a quilt that has intimidated me forever. Not any more. Thought there was going to be a lot of curves to sew. The simplicity of this is astonishing. Great job ladies.
If you keep your pointer tool only on the fabric fold and not the interfacing fold, the interfacing will never tear. Awesome hints in this group of comments. Thanks to everyone, woohoo. I've been too 🐔 to sew this quilt because I too thought it was all curves to sew. The new simplicity you two have done it in has opened up a world of peels now. This should also be in the triple play so we can see ideas you there ladies come up with. Even a mini orange peel project.
Glad to see the sound issue isn't just me. My volume is all the way up, and I still can't hear alot of the video. Then I forget to turn it down, and another company's video is way to loud. I sure hope MSQC gets it fixed soon!
if you want a quicker way to get this same look you could fuse 4 petals on a 10' precut white background. This would give you far fewer seams and only 5 blocks across the top and 7 down
I am pretty new to quilting so looking for some easy ones to do until I feel more confident. This design seemed complicated to me but I cannot believe how easy you make it look. I think I will give it a try. Thanks for another great tutorial!!!
I love 💕 the look of an Orange Peel quilt. After I turn out my peel shape, I trim away all but about 5/8” of the interfacing before pressing the shape to the square (sometimes called the “windowing’ technique for appliqué, usually done to reduce bulk). I find this lessens the overall stiffness of my quilt top. It looks fabulous in these latest Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
WOW I received a free template for the Orange Peel Block recently and I decided to make a new quilt for our newly decorated bedroom, and suddenly up pops your video. So much easier the way you made it Jenny and I shall follow your instructions LOL. My template has the 2 corners as well as the orange peel, which involves curving the corners around the peel eeeeeekkkkk noooooo.. Your version is so much simpler and quicker - this is the way to go. Thank you for your GREAT and VERY timely tutorial. xx
If it helps... I find that I tend to rip the interfacing when using the turning tool. So I use a larger crochet hook. I find I don't push thru nearly as often with the crochet hook
This was a great tutorial! I love seeing you two ladies together! Yes, Natalie, you did a wonderful job with your topstitching! Looks like you’ve done it once or twice before!
My great grandmother made one that was called "Robbing Peter to Pay Paul". She did it in Orange and yellow and the orange peel was in the opposite color as the background. That was always on my bed at my grandmothers.
Hi ladies ... WoW!! I love this quilt !❤❤❤ sticky buns is so beautiful, love this material it made a super GEORGEOUS quilt. I have been waiting for this tutorial girls.
I love this quilt. It was one of the first quilts I made several years ago. I forgot how much I enjoyed working on it, and I just might make another one.
I just completed a table topper plus a runner with the orange peel template! I’m so happy with how it turned out and was fun to make! Thank you for the terrific up-close and overhead camera work!
Lovely job ladies! QUESTION...since you've fused your orange peels in place, could you skip the edge stitching & just use a nice quilting motif to hold them permanently in place?
Beautiful quilt. Honestly, I think if you didn’t cut the 10” square into four pieces, and you laid all the orange peels going in the same slant, I think you could get six out of one 10” square! I haven’t tried it, but I think it might work. Then you could make a bigger quilt. Also, I was thinking that if you took a little circle and put it right in the center of those four petals it would make a flower! 🌼
@@HRHDMKYT Thanks for checking that out! I wasn’t able to dig out my template until now, and as you found, it’s too chunky to get six. But by drawing on the cardboard that came on a ten sq pack, I figured out a way to get five!. So in the top row, point the top of both footballs to the center. Then in the bottom row, Point the tops of both footballs out to the center sides of the square; having the bottoms of the footballs pointing to the center of the bottom. (They sort of form a circle.) Then, there’s just enough room to squeak a fifth petal pointing straight up and down (or side to side)! 😁
Good Evening Jenny and Natalie, I am so happy to see this video show casing the orange peel, gosh I have always admired this design. I love Kaffe’s Classic Fabrics with those saturated colors, I didn’t realize they still offer this fabric, Yay❣️ Thank You for sharing your work with us, so appreciated. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Take Care and God Bless, 🥰👍❣️ Chris
Natalie, love your dragon eye idea. My quilts all tell stories, so I understand imagination. 😁. Best advice was to not iron until the peel is on the background square!
That was so easy! I have all the supplies to make the Orange Peel quilt. Thank you Jenny and Natalie for a great tutorial that makes this so easy to do. 💖💖💖
I love this quilt pattern and just made one with all different pastel colored orange peels. Next time I would use a 10" square and not the 5", less seams will make this quilt lighter weight. Jenny, do you have a TH-cam playlist with ALL 15 most loved quilt patterns? I would love to see them all. Thank you for all of your videos that inspire. Keep up the beautiful work ladies!
Great hack Natalie! I bought these templates a few years ago but struggled to get good points on my petals. Will have to try again soon. Thank you ladies. I always enjoy your videos. You all just simplify it and make it achievable.
I’m almost done with my Hattie’s Sunflower quilt which also uses the orange peel template. Have lots of scraps in my stash, may have to use some of them to do this quilt in a scrappy look. So much easier than it looks and so stunning!
To make even faster: When you finish cutting out the interfacing petals (I do 10 layers at a time), leave them stacked and use the rotary cutter to make the little slit in the middle of the whole pile at once. It saves you doing them one at a time with scissors.
That is a fantastic idea 💡!
Smart move!
They look like surf boards...
That’s what I thought, too!
Great tip…and saves you from accidentally snipping your fabric!!!
I love watching Natalie and Jenny working together. Very special! Makes me miss my mom, even though it’s been over 20 years since she passed. ❤
Another way to make it easier is don't cut your 10 inch background square. Just fold it in half both directions. You can use your fold lines to place the four orange peels on the 10 inch square. Then you only have ten inch blocks to sew together instead of four-5 inch blocks.
I was just about to suggest this :)
I was thinking the same thing, seems much easier to leave the 10” square together.
I love this idea!
Loving this hint!!
I wonder if you should use 9 1/2 inch background squares instead, then. Would be easy enough if you're using yardage.
Gosh, Natalie! Your hack will save me so much time❤. Thanks. Pat Berne

Beautiful quilt. Love purple. Happy Mother's Day to all the ladies at Missouri Star Qulit Co.❤🎉
Oh my goodness!!!! Now I really want to make this!!! Thank you Jenny and Natalie. I will add this to my “Retirement Schedule of Quilts” I’m going to make 😍😊
The pattern is gorgeous. I must admit Kaffe fabric really modernized it. I just love it & the colors are my favorites too. Thanks Ladies! ❤
This looks like so much fun to make. I’ve been so busy doing taxes I haven’t sewn any quilts since the first of the year. Watching Jenny gets me in the mood again. I love keeping it simple, too. Life is complicated enough.
I love Kaffe fabrics! What a beautiful quilt. And I love when you two get together- such a relaxed and comfortable exchange
This is such a fun pattern! Diagonal ombre, print background and solid peels. Endless possibilities! You could use a 10 in block fold on the diagonal and place the peels on the fold. Stitch in place and sew the larger 10 in blocks together.
Yes, I was just thinking, why sew all those 5” sqrs together when you cd just iron them on a 10” sqr. 😃👍🌷
Rainie, could you explain more. I'm not getting your idea... thanks. 🙂
@@susanmei9980 yes I agree 👍
@@conrenberger - great time saver idea.
I was just thinking that while watching! 👍🏻
I used this pattern to make one of the 8 memory quilts for everyone from my mother's homemade cotton dresses.
What a wonderful idea! Could do it from men’s dress shirts also. Thank you for the inspiration.
Natille you look amazing!!! So very proud of all the weight you have lost and it gives me hope that I can lose the weight also. This is one of my favorite quilts!
Natalie, you do look great! I've struggled my whole life and had hit goal in my mid-30's. Now at 64 I wish I had kept it OFF!
Love that Jenny uses a Sharpie to write her initials on her template!!
I didn’t catch that! 😂
🙌
This quilt definitely has that “WOW” factor! 🎉
Dear ladies, may God bless you and your families!
Love the opportunity to use the blanket stich around the edges. Great tutorial as always.
It’s a sign that I need to get a life, I remember the first video of the orange peel. This is a lovely quilt.
Wow! That is a quilt that has intimidated me forever. Not any more. Thought there was going to be a lot of curves to sew. The simplicity of this is astonishing. Great job ladies.
Just watched the last James Cordon show and now I get to see you girls. What a treat this time of night.
If you keep your pointer tool only on the fabric fold and not the interfacing fold, the interfacing will never tear.

This is a beautiful and simple pattern!! And it would be awesome in a scrappy version.
After you cut out the interfacing you can use your rotary cutter to cut a slit in the center of all of them at once. Saving doing it to each piece.
Beautiful quilt. Why is the sound on the newer videos so low? The old videos are fine, but the new I can hardly hear.
I had to turn the volume way up also
I have the same problem with the newer videos
Headphones or bone phones may help.
Glad to see the sound issue isn't just me. My volume is all the way up, and I still can't hear alot of the video. Then I forget to turn it down, and another company's video is way to loud. I sure hope MSQC gets it fixed soon!
I’ve made this quilt numerous times. I think Kaffe fabrics are absolutely perfect!
if you want a quicker way to get this same look you could fuse 4 petals on a 10' precut white background. This would give you far fewer seams and only 5 blocks across the top and 7 down
Yes but don't forget the seam allowance, so maybe 9 1/2" background square instead to keep the pattern touching
Mine is finished and I love it!
I want to do this , Love the process and the outcome. Thank you dear girls
I am pretty new to quilting so looking for some easy ones to do until I feel more confident. This design seemed complicated to me but I cannot believe how easy you make it look. I think I will give it a try. Thanks for another great tutorial!!!
I made it for my momma! Love it!

How genius! I've seen cardboard used to glue the peel on, then remove. This is such an easy way to create them!! Thank you!

What a sweet memory that is!
Great throwback quilt with Kaffe … looks fabulous 🤩
One of my favorite patterns. You lady’s are awesome together.❤
Natalie, I think the same way all the time. Thats why your quilts are so good.
Brilliant, thanks Jenny, Natalie. I have just ordered the Parakeet from KF Classics to make this quilt!
Natalie, I love your imagination!! I thought the same thing. Keep up the great work that ALL of you do! God Bless! 🙏🏻

I love this quilt! Thinking of using 1930’s reproduction fabrics!! There are also some great hints here!!
Thanks for another great tutorial............love all the blue fabrics!

Beautiful quilt!
That orange peel is beautiful ♥️
Beautiful quilt. Thank you Jenny and Natalie! So happy that I got to spend some time with you both this morning.
Love this quilt and the fabric!
Lovely quilt. Thank you.
Beautiful! I love the colors!
Oh this looks fun! I was a little intimated at first and your demonstration and explanation has got me excited to make this! Thanks
Adding another to my list! Just ordered the template 😀

I was imagining a thin strip and make them into butterflies!
No such luck. The peel shape is too big to get more than four out of one 10” square 🙂

Little imperfections in a quilt I love. Shows it was not made by a machine and was made. 🤷♂️ makes each one different!
I love you two together.
This has always been my favorite tutorials of all time. I have to orange peel a small one but still haven’t done it! Gorgeous quilt
This is a sweet quilt.
I love you Natalie! That was a great idea!
I love this pattern & I have the template, so I will be making this one! Thanks Jenny & Natalie!
This is a gorgeous quilt, and easy to make! Thanks girls!!
Started mine today 😁
Amazing quilt 🤩 Love the fabric choice 👏👏🇬🇧
Your backing is gorgeous!
If you are quilting the quilt yourself, you don’t have to machine appliqué each square, you can “quilt” the peels down as part of your quilting.
I love this quilt, it's beautiful!
Definitely going to make one!
Beautiful colors!
