  • Here is the new quail brooder that I designed and built. It measures 20 x 42 and is framed out of cheap strapping wood, and the sides are 11/32 plywood. The bottom is 1/4 inch mesh to let the quail droppings fall through. There is a water proof pull out tray underneath to collect the waste. My coturnix quail chicks seem to be doing well in it so far!

Found the 1/4 inch was to small, poo didn’t all go through and would then build up, after a week, 1/2 was fine and reduced poo almost completely

Get a different feeder so feed isn't waisted. I use a plastic food container with holes on sides for them to stick their head into.

Make life easier for yourself. Put a piece of news paper on the bottom of the poop plate. It will make it sooo much easier to clean

How is the Masonite holding up? I'm thinking aluminum sheet might be a longer lasting option .

If you coat it with flex seal it can last a year or two. Just be careful not to poke holes in it when cleaning it, and you should be fine. Aluminum should work great too, just need to reinforce it with something rigid.

Did the poop fall through this floor well or do you think I should go with the half inch

It continues to work great. Go with 1/4 inch metal mesh. 1/2 inch is Way too large and their entire feet will fit through. 1/2 inch is what I use for adults.

Do you put the baby quail in the brooder once they hatched in incubator? And for how long?

That's pretty cool. What kind of rubber paint did you use on the trays? I'd like to use that for mine. Thanks.

Hey Josiah! It's called Flex Seal. They sell it at most hardware stores, but you can find it on Amazon too. I will put an Amazon link to it below so you can check it out. If you order with my link you help support the channel. I have been using the stuff for about 2 years, and it's great.
