To anyone raising quail, I use to raise a lot of quail( 90 pair) back in the 60s. Never used the blue paper on the floor of the brooders. So this year I decided to get some California quail to try to release into the wild to take the place of the bob whites that were no longer to be found except in certain areas. Well I built my brooder with 1/2 inch rabbit wire on the floor and covered it with the blue paper. I also built my own incubator and a hatcher to hatch the eggs when it came time. I got 50 Georgia Giant Bob white eggs to test my incubator to make sure it worked correctly. Well the hatcher and incubator worked great, out of 49 eggs, I had 46 hatch. I put them in the brooder which had the blue paper on it and everything was fine for the first 3 days. Then they started dieing, I lost three in the next two days. I changed the paper and everything was find again for about three days, again 3 more died on the 4th day! So I took the blue paper out and let them walk on the 1/2 inch rabbit wire. I now had 40 left and they are all living now for 5 1/2 weeks and doing great. Now I got my Califorina quail eggs in the put them in the incubator with the same temperature and humidy. Well out of 94 eggs they sent to me , 4 were cracked and so I had 90 good eggs. The shipping was bad, they sent it 2 day delivery and it got here on the 5th day at noon! Waited a day and put them in the incubator and when time came put them in the hatcher. 66 of them hatched in great health! Same thing, I had the blue paper on the floor of the brooder. I had cleaned and disenfected the whole brooder before hand. The chicks were on the blue paper for 3 days and then they started dieing like the Georgia quail did, same as before, 3 died and I changed the paper. Then 3 days later 4 died and one more died over night! All these birds were healthy and running around before they died! So I built a drop in floor in my brooder with the 1/4 inch rabbit wire and put them on it! Well they have been on it for 4 days now and all healthy and running around! I think people need to watch out for the blue paper cause in my opinion they peck it and after while it gets damp and they swollow it and it kills them. The reason is the last one that died, I noticed it was having a hard time breathing and the next morning it was dead. Both the Georgia Giants and California quail did great after moving them off the blue paper. So if you are using the blue paper on the floor of your brooder, Beware if they start to die! This is just something I have noticed and want other people to be aware of! Thanks and hope this helps other people, Both the California and Georgia giants are doing great now! Wish everyone luck and pay attention to your birds!

Interesting. I have been wondering about putting new hatchling directly on 1/4 in hardware wire. Did you open up the expired chicks to see if they did actually eat the paper? the other advantage of paper on bottom - it keeps drafts off the chicks for first several days.

On a smaller 36" x 24" scale, I use silicone (vented = microholes) drawer liners for the first week over 1/4" cage wire. Gives them good footing and the drawer liners can be cleaned, sterilized and reused. I have it so I can replace 1/2 the brooder with a second clean set of drawer liner while moving the babies to the other side, rinse & repeat.
Cleaning, I wash with warm soapy water in a galvanized wash basin, rinse with fresh water. I let these dry and then mist them with an original (non colored) dollarstore listerene/water 50/50 mix, let dry and often rinse/dry again.
I hate to waste anything, especially paper/wood (trees).
