    In my 2019 Sportster 48 Special, there where cats inside the mufflers before the baffles. I didn't cut out the baffles as in the video, I just ran a cup saw on an extension thru the muffler. Wham Bam thank you Mam. sound Great!

      @flatroc1 nice idea! I wana do the same for my 2020 sportster 48. I want to also use an extender with a 1 inch drill saw and make a hole in the baffle. Question bro .... did u lose back pressure or lose any performance with this easy/cheap mod? Have you had any issues in the 1 year or you would recommend this for others? Thanks a mil !

    Did this to my Night Train with a 1-3/4" hole saw. Worked great, took 20 minutes start to finish and left the exhuast fully mounted. Sounds nice and deep now, but still not obnoxiously loud.

    Yeeesssss, it has such a beasty sound now. No problems with any backfire or pressure loss. Everything is good and the Exhaust roars when i start it up. Thanks for the video and help :D

      I believe your baffles are either riveted or screwed in place, look behind or on the bike side of your pipes and look for rivets or screws. These will be whats holding them in place. If not, then I'm lost

    Hi Chadd, thank you so very much for your great advice! You are a gentleman ~ sharing all these with others online. Wish I could buy you a case of beer or something. I guess we will go ahead ~ drill it (1 3/4") and pull out the baffle and see if there is that catalytics converter inside. And then start it to see how she runs. The worst will be we will have to put the damn thing back inside the pipe and secure it. Thanks much! Peter M.

  • @darylmohon4023
    @darylmohon4023 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Did you install any torque cones? If not did you lose low and mid range torque. I'm all for increased sound, but not at the expense of performance.

    • @HumVDoctor1
      @HumVDoctor1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just punched the bottom out of both of my baffles and it sounds great and gained performance. I have more low and mid range torque. The RPM range is wider as well. I have no complaints at all. My bike is a 2011 Sportster XL 1200 Custom.

    I have a 2012 sportster xl1200 custom and got slip-ons and the Harley shop told me I was fine but if I were to straight pipe it /remove the baffles I would need a fuel programmer. Because it will burn the valves. I now have a heavy breather with rush slip-ons and a screaming eagle race programmer and gained 20hp 15ftlb torque and about 10 mpg. I would recommend the programmer if you don't want to put unnecessary money into your engine. Ps fuel injected need back pressure to run correctly

    Ah the dremel, one of my most used tools. I prefer baffled, I have an ironhead I had to shove 8 inch baffles in and it didn't change the sound at all but a nice boost to midrange. Guess I should look into some slip ons like those.

    So I decides to try the poke/drill a hole thing first to see if the effect was loud enough. There were already holes in the metal plate on the baffle. I went to widen it and the welds on that plate broke. The plate fell right out. It sounds way louder and pretty awesome. The baffled are still welded in. Since that plate is the same circumference as the baffle, would make a difference to remove it?

  • @85kewgrr
    @85kewgrr 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The issue with both burnt valves and low end torque is that, because the exhaust has better flow, the engine is now getting more air. If they have this, along with other mods, they could be running too lean causing both of those issues.

    Interesting. I took off my pipes on my 1991 Sportster 1200 and the baffles are only fastened with a bolt so it's super easy too take em out. However I need to get a different air filter and also find out if I need to re jet the carb.

    Well mapping is when the dealer or a certified mechanic hooks the bikes computer up to a device that changes the fuel/air mixture (mapping) for optimum performance. usually costs about $150. Personally i don't think it is needed unless you have an aftermarket air filter as well.

  • @pm55965
    @pm55965 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Chadd, thanks for the quick reply! You're the best. If you could please spare me for a few more questions. Will the baffle come out as "easily" as the one me and my friends took out on my other 2005 883? I understand there is some catalyst thingy attached to the new pipe, CORRECT? will that make a difference, more difficult? So, we will have to "remap" this new 2013, correct? Or can we try running it first or will it hurt the engine as it runs much leaner? Thanks so much ! Peter M

    Thanks a lot for this vid, brother. I recently bought an '05 883R (black) with 4g on the mileage, mint, for 3k. I HATE the sound compared to my old '72shovel night train custom so the baffles are coming out, I'm throwing some shorter rear shocks on, breezer bars and maybe a different air intake. Your thoughts on a good performance, non cumbersome, air setup?

    After you do this it does sound better..but if you want some awesome sounding drag pipes for only $15 then just replace the baffle tube that you cut out with a 17-1/4 inch long 1-3/4 inner diameter tailpipe extension from pep boys...just drill a hole through the backside and bolt them in.. $15 was my total cost for 2 extensions from pep boys..way better than wasting $150 +on aftermarket.

  • @northminibikes
    @northminibikes  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    no, it will run a LITTLE different but not much. If you also have a high flow air cleaner you will need to re map it.

  • @TRX450RRacer13
    @TRX450RRacer13 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you not have any problems with back pressure? Or with the extra flow and not enough fuel/air?

    • @northminibikes
      @northminibikes  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well sure, not really "problems" but she is running a little richer than stock, but not much. It will pop every so often or on a high RPM throttle release. But as a mechanic, if it's running rich, it's running forever. Lean is what kills an engine.

    • @t.s.racing
      @t.s.racing 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dyno tune for a living, popping on deceleration is a LEAN condition, NOT RICH, which is what would happen from a NOW free flowing exhaust or open exhaust. Neither is good for a engine. A BIG misconception is that a rich mixture runs cooler or makes a engine last longer. Temperature inside the combustion chamber goes UP with a excessively rich mixture as well as a excessively lean mix. Fact. 🇺🇸🏍💪🇺🇸

    yes actually it does! i noticed it does not have as much pull on the mid range rpm, say if i am about to pass someone i have to commit, cant just blast by, but it is slight. but the low end has more power. so it balances, but for the sound difference, it is all worth it. and another thing is, you really dont have to ake off the pipes to do this, just cut the weld at the rear of the pipe and use pliers to pull out the baffle.

    Did you have to cut both ends or just the one?

    Hey Chad,
    I have a buddy with the 100th aniversary edition 883, he doesn't have the $ for all the aftermarket stuff but HATES how quiet the bike is. Its his first and he wants that sound. Any effects of performance or longterm damage concerns before we do this?
    P.S. thank you to you and all the others who serve.

      Well, here's the skinny... It will sound better after doing this...you will lose a little low end torque. And she might pop a few times here and there. But "eventually" he will want to pay the $150 and get the engine "mapped" (they adjust the fuel/air mixture) Taking the baffles out like in this video will make the engine run hotter (but not too much) I ran mine like this for 2 years with no issues.

    I took mine out, it killed my low end torque, so I put them back in. Thinking about making some lollipops, in order to tune between power and sound.😎

    should've used a hole saw the size of the inside diameter of the pipe. Then pull them out from the rear with a pair of needle nose pliers. Easiest was to do it.

    I dont this on my 2018 883 and couldn't get baffle out.....ran into about 2 inches of steel mesh in the top of the pipe...do you know if they changed the exhaust on a 2018....or is there something else I need to do to get baffle out?
