Trực is a Sino-Vietnamese and is a "play on words," similar to what English speakers would call slang.. It comes from a word for bamboo (and originally meant "straightforward). But, the lady in the market was telling you not to wear it because it's a slang word that means "to take turns" or in English we would say "on duty." It would be the equivalent of wearing an arm band that said "On Guard." LOL
@@kent4239wondered the same at first but have now watched it and wonder if it’s sort of along the lines of the people that would watch workers and keep them in line. Similar to how you would have men with rifles ‘on guard’ on plantations during US slavery, to prevent escapes etc. Some may argue it’s like wearing inappropriate paraphernalia. Visited Vietnam in 2016,2018,October 2019 til april 2021 because of the pandemic. Returned to the states sold our cars,house and everything we owned and moved to Vietnam arrived on January 21,2022. We have an investment visa and plan on staying her for the rest of our lives! Vietnam is a Beautiful country with the most wonderful and friendliest people in the world! Long live Vietnam and it's people!

Before my uncle died we took a trip to Vietnam. He stepped on a land mine and it was only him surrounded by 3 Vietnamese. One of them tried to save his life, he still lost a leg and he never forgot that man. When we went he had already passed but we got to talk about his family. He would never talk about the war but he told the story of my uncle so many times. They all embraced us. It’s like these people don’t hold any grudges against us for what we did over there. It was a sobering moment and I cried for sure. Vietnam is a very very beautiful place. Anyone that gets a chance to travel, just do it. You only need like $1500, take a few days off and just go. You will regret everything later in life if you never travel

I went through many villages where they were eating dog and I think that’s primarily because they don’t have a lot of money. Im sure they would much rather eat some nice beef but thats much more expensive than the dogs freely running around. Some people in some parts of the world dont have the privilege we do.

Starting in Russia was wise it’s mostly barren wilderness and rundown cities and frozen wastes I like a good 12 hour hike in -2 degrees miles from another human but not much content there actually so now anywhere he goes is an improvement
There was a pilot from Scotland who caught Covid at the start of the pandemic. He ended up in Vietnam at the other side of the world and was the sickest man in their country. Their doctors and nurses fought non stop to keep him alive but that wasn't the most remarkable part. The most remarkable part was that at one point there was news that the man may need lung transplants 26 people came forward to offer their lungs so the pilot could survive. This would have been a death sentence for them. Thankfully they wouldn't have been allowed to give their lungs as live donors. But 26 total strangers were willing to die so that a guest in their country would be given the best care their country could offer. What amazing, remarkable, kind and beautiful people. Truly some of the best people the world has to offer.

Was just in Vietnam for a month this past summer - Travelled from the northern tip (on the border with China) right down to the Mekong delta. It's a really unique and incredibly vibrant place. The people were generally less outwardly warm than in Thailand but as soon as a conversation starts they're incredibly friendly and welcoming. I normally avoid going back to places I've been before just so I can try to see more of the world but Vietnam is one of the rare countries I've seen so much of that I would travel back to any time.

When you can find good prices on flights, book and go. I’m confident you’ll have a good time. Lots of good and cheap food, cheap beer, great coffee. Despite the history between the two countries, Vietnam in general is a very pro-US country, in fact the most pro US country in the world, according to the most recent Pew poll. If you go to a local beer restaurant, and people in the next table know you’re American, they will probably invite you over to join them or buy you a beer.
I used to work in refugee resettlement in the states. There was this long slow process of allowing Vietnamese who had supported us in the war to trickle into the US for citizenship. I worked with a majority of the cultures on the planet in this job. The Vietnamese were some of the most industrious people I've ever met. And they seem to have more internal fire than you see in a lot of peoples.
Are those that fled communism representative of all Vietnamese? Those that fled persecution and arrived with no possessions and no safety net tend to have the most determination to succeed.

Best way to travel in my experience, the people you meet off the beaten track are always so lovely, rarely see westerners so always keen to engage and help.

I did 1500 miles, 2400km from Hanoi to ho chi min city via halon Bay in January 2019 on the same motorbike. It took us 3 weeks It was cold and raining in Hanoi when we set off too. I nearly died 10 times a day because of the crazy roads but it was one of the best trips I've done At the time that was my last trip of 27 countries in 3.5 years I even went to Rwanda and Uganda alone to see the mountain gorillas too Vietnam was one of my best trips without a doubt
I taught English for 1.5 years in Vietnam and it is my favorite country on earth. Even after 5 years, I miss Vietnam every single day. Too many good things to say about the country, but number 1 is the people - strong, proud, friendly, kind.

My family and I visited Central Vietnam, mainly Da Nang, Hue, and Hoi An. We had a great time. The people were kind, the food was fabulous, and the history was fascinating. We'd all like to go back sometime.

Although not in Vietnam, while in the Siem Reap area of Cambodia, we went on a village tour and there was a "restaurant" that served dog that we visited. I put "restaurant" in quotes because it was little more than some picnic tables and a barbeque grill in front of someone's house that regularly served dog. There was young boy, probably 10 years old, preparing to make sausage by cleaning out the dog's intestines on an old tree stump with flies landing on everything. My wife hasn't eaten meat since. What I found even stranger was that the family running the "restaurant" had a pet dog which was running around, apparently happily. I even asked if the dogs they served were a different breed than the dogs they kept as pets, but nope. I would think that the dog would suffer from PTSD watching his cousins routinely get killed, chopped up, and barbecued daily, but I guess not. Still, that being said, I'm not necessarily against people eating dog. If you travel enough, you quickly learn that if something is edible, some people somewhere will regularly eat it. For them it is completely normal. For other people it is abhorrent. It is all based on the culture you grew up in. Even if I think some food is abhorrent, I wrestle with questions like: Who am I to judge? Why does my own culture find it acceptable to eat just some animals but not others? I think that is the great thing about traveling. If you do it with an open mind, it is quite eye-opening and educational. Travel can teach you not only about other cultures, but so much about your own culture as well.
I just returned from my second trip to Vietnam a couple of weeks ago. I absolutely love the country! The people are almost unbelievably friendly. I can't wait to go back!

Growing up i watched the Vietnam war and the protests on TV. In 1976 i met my first Vietnamese as students in college. They escaped Vietnam by boat and were referred to as boat people in the media. My college friends were warm, friendly, gracious, industrious and extremely grateful to be Americans. Later in the 90s I lived in a South Philly neighborhood which became a large resettlement for Vietnamese refugees. They opened a number of businesses ranging from food markets, restaurants, tailor shops and novelties. Wonderful neighbors, never any acrimony toward Americans and a lot of empathy in understanding that war is hell for all involved.

I've toured extensively in the Far East, and loved Vietnam, largely because of the residents. Universally happy and welcoming. Tragic that the West could have sought to suppress such kind people.

More like the West feared that the Soviets and Red China would turn Vietnam into another hellhole. Fortunately Ho-Chi-Minh didn't want that either, so the Vietnamese charted their own course after the war ended. Which is fair enough.

I have toured northern Vietnam by bike (with no idea what I am doing on a motorbike) and was blown away by the beauty of the place, the food and the kindness of the people helping me multiple times when breaking down and needing somewhere to stay. The highlight meeting a Chinese tribe and getting copious amounts of rice wine fed to me. Definitely a bucket list activity
@@zucced2087 Technically you do need a license and had I been nabbed by the police I would have probably copped a fine. But I dont even have a British driving license either, just a bit if prior experience with mopeds in Thailand. The roads in the far north of Vietnam and most rural places are bendy, undulating and quite slow moving. Therefore you raise a good point, hiring a motorbike for a week was the best stupid and reckless decision I ever made, luckily for me I got away with it. If you want to do things properly then you can take a motorbike test there if you don't already have a license.
I traveled the north of Vietnam by motorcycle (I really hadn’t a clue how to ride one) & truly was taken back by the beautiful scenery, grub & the hospitality of the people who assisted me multiple times when I broke down!

If you get this message and you have time, you should really head down to Con Dao/Con Son island and do an episode about the French Colonialist prisons on the island and the American Tiger Cages. Beautiful, spooky island with a very dark history.

I am Retired Air Force and there were 8 Airman that lost their lives that served as Aierial Porters in their Carreer field that i myself retired from. I did not serve in Vietnam as i was too young. But i did enlist 3 weeks to the day after turning 17 yrs old back in Dec 18, 1976 and i was trained by Vietnam vets that had served there in Vietnam. Glad to see you in a happy place. Keep in mind as you travel that about 70-75 percent of the people living in Vietnam were born after the fall of Saigon and are tourists in their country when it comes to the war era.

Very glad to see you in Vietnam, I was hoping you'd go sometime. My girlfriend's family is Vietnamese, and I plan on going in the near future. It always has seemed like an amazingly beautiful country. One of my strongest early memories is being with my grandfather at our wall in D.C. and him touching names of friends he lost. I think for a lot of Americans that is the idea of Vietnam. It's been a nice experience having that idea changed.

But, the lady in the market was telling you not to wear it because it's a slang word that means "to take turns" or in English we would say "on duty." It would be the equivalent of wearing an arm band that said "On Guard." LOL

Before my uncle died we took a trip to Vietnam. He stepped on a land mine and it was only him surrounded by 3 Vietnamese. One of them tried to save his life, he still lost a leg and he never forgot that man. When we went he had already passed but we got to talk about his family. He would never talk about the war but he told the story of my uncle so many times. They all embraced us. It’s like these people don’t hold any grudges against us for what we did over there. It was a sobering moment and I cried for sure. Vietnam is a very very beautiful place. Anyone that gets a chance to travel, just do it. You only need like $1500, take a few days off and just go. You will regret everything later in life if you never travel
Don't forget the Vietnamese were slaughtering each other in large numbers before the US got there.

As a dog lover and owner in America now (and I might have eaten dog meat 45 years ago as a child in Vietnam), I think some people in Vietnam just need to be better educated on this subject.

I went through many villages where they were eating dog and I think that’s primarily because they don’t have a lot of money. Im sure they would much rather eat some nice beef but thats much more expensive than the dogs freely running around. Some people in some parts of the world dont have the privilege we do.

I loved Vietnam. Spent four weeks from Saigon to Hanoi on bus, train and plane with my mum from July-August this year. Amazing place.

There was a pilot from Scotland who caught Covid at the start of the pandemic. He ended up in Vietnam at the other side of the world and was the sickest man in their country. Their doctors and nurses fought non stop to keep him alive but that wasn't the most remarkable part. The most remarkable part was that at one point there was news that the man may need lung transplants 26 people came forward to offer their lungs so the pilot could survive. This would have been a death sentence for them. Thankfully they wouldn't have been allowed to give their lungs as live donors. But 26 total strangers were willing to die so that a guest in their country would be given the best care their country could offer. What amazing, remarkable, kind and beautiful people. Truly some of the best people the world has to offer.

Was just in Vietnam for a month this past summer - Travelled from the northern tip (on the border with China) right down to the Mekong delta. It's a really unique and incredibly vibrant place. The people were generally less outwardly warm than in Thailand but as soon as a conversation starts they're incredibly friendly and welcoming. I normally avoid going back to places I've been before just so I can try to see more of the world but Vietnam is one of the rare countries I've seen so much of that I would travel back to any time.

When you can find good prices on flights, book and go. I’m confident you’ll have a good time. Lots of good and cheap food, cheap beer, great coffee. Despite the history between the two countries, Vietnam in general is a very pro-US country, in fact the most pro US country in the world, according to the most recent Pew poll. If you go to a local beer restaurant, and people in the next table know you’re American, they will probably invite you over to join them or buy you a beer.
It’s the best country to visit in Asia but go to HANOI not Saigon.

I used to work in refugee resettlement in the states. There was this long slow process of allowing Vietnamese who had supported us in the war to trickle into the US for citizenship. I worked with a majority of the cultures on the planet in this job. The Vietnamese were some of the most industrious people I've ever met. And they seem to have more internal fire than you see in a lot of peoples.
Are those that fled communism representative of all Vietnamese? Those that fled persecution and arrived with no possessions and no safety net tend to have the most determination to succeed.

Best way to travel in my experience, the people you meet off the beaten track are always so lovely, rarely see westerners so always keen to engage and help.
Bald speaks many languages- even Vietnamese - being a former British MI6. He may not choose to show us this but he does….
I think it’s cool too but I miss his conversations with the locals. It added something to this videos. Like Estonia when he spoke to the man in that closed town. That was reality cool to listen too.

I did 1500 miles, 2400km from Hanoi to ho chi min city via halon Bay in January 2019 on the same motorbike.
It took us 3 weeks
It was cold and raining in Hanoi when we set off too.
I nearly died 10 times a day because of the crazy roads but it was one of the best trips I've done
At the time that was my last trip of 27 countries in 3.5 years
I even went to Rwanda and Uganda alone to see the mountain gorillas too
Vietnam was one of my best trips without a doubt

I taught English for 1.5 years in Vietnam and it is my favorite country on earth. Even after 5 years, I miss Vietnam every single day. Too many good things to say about the country, but number 1 is the people - strong, proud, friendly, kind.

As a person who has been to DaNang, Vietnam a couple of times myself I also found the people of the country so welcoming and friendly towards visitors. My family and I visited Central Vietnam, mainly Da Nang, Hue, and Hoi An. We had a great time. The people were kind, the food was fabulous, and the history was fascinating. We'd all like to go back sometime.

Although not in Vietnam, while in the Siem Reap area of Cambodia, we went on a village tour and there was a "restaurant" that served dog that we visited.
I put "restaurant" in quotes because it was little more than some picnic tables and a barbeque grill in front of someone's house that regularly served dog.
There was young boy, probably 10 years old, preparing to make sausage by cleaning out the dog's intestines on an old tree stump with flies landing on everything.
My wife hasn't eaten meat since.
What I found even stranger was that the family running the "restaurant" had a pet dog which was running around, apparently happily. I even asked if the dogs they served were a different breed than the dogs they kept as pets, but nope.
I would think that the dog would suffer from PTSD watching his cousins routinely get killed, chopped up, and barbecued daily, but I guess not.
Still, that being said, I'm not necessarily against people eating dog.
If you travel enough, you quickly learn that if something is edible, some people somewhere will regularly eat it.
For them it is completely normal. For other people it is abhorrent. It is all based on the culture you grew up in.
Even if I think some food is abhorrent, I wrestle with questions like: Who am I to judge? Why does my own culture find it acceptable to eat just some animals but not others?
I think that is the great thing about traveling. If you do it with an open mind, it is quite eye-opening and educational. Travel can teach you not only about other cultures, but so much about your own culture as well.

I just returned from my second trip to Vietnam a couple of weeks ago. I absolutely love the country! The people are almost unbelievably friendly. I can't wait to go back!

@@MsRoge25 When asked, they're incredulous that Americans still dwell on it. They look to the future, no residual discomfort about the past. At least the younger generation. I think older folks might retain some feelings.

@@JBTheMighty Avoid the rainy season. Otherwise, know that the coastal areas are hot/humid, and the Central Highlands are less touristy, less hot/humid, and absolutely wonderful to visit. Go to Pleiku!

Even the Vietnamese Commie regime's own newspapers had to publish the result of the surveys, like 95% of foreign visitors say never return to Vietnam the second time, while the reserve is true for neighboring countries like Thailand. Growing up i watched the Vietnam war and the protests on TV. In 1976 i met my first Vietnamese as students in college. They escaped Vietnam by boat and were referred to as boat people in the media. My college friends were warm, friendly, gracious, industrious and extremely grateful to be Americans. Later in the 90s I lived in a South Philly neighborhood which became a large resettlement for Vietnamese refugees. They opened a number of businesses ranging from food markets, restaurants, tailor shops and novelties. Wonderful neighbors, never any acrimony toward Americans and a lot of empathy in understanding that war is hell for all involved.

🇺🇸Someone here claimed to be Americans and said the US military invaded Vietnam and lost the war. They had no idea about the Vietnam war and why the US needed to come to Vietnam. They had no clues about the agreements between the North and South Vietnam which the North broke all agreements. We never lost a battle. We also did not invade Vietnam🇺🇸

Their missions maybe: protect the company‘s assets( security+privacy), maintain the production line, report the technical problems,…The leader can wear a red armband or a hat like him.

I've toured extensively in the Far East, and loved Vietnam, largely because of the residents. Universally happy and welcoming. Tragic that the West could have sought to suppress such kind people.
Tragic, indeed. Massive respect to the Vietnamese people and leadership for putting this ugly past behind us. Vietnam is now looking more and more westward for security against their massive, belligerent neighbor that stole the Paracel Islands and also tried to invade them (but failed).

More like the West feared that the Soviets and Red China would turn Vietnam into another hellhole. Fortunately Ho-Chi-Minh didn't want that either, so the Vietnamese charted their own course after the war ended. Which is fair enough.

I have toured northern Vietnam by bike (with no idea what I am doing on a motorbike) and was blown away by the beauty of the place, the food and the kindness of the people helping me multiple times when breaking down and needing somewhere to stay. The highlight meeting a Chinese tribe and getting copious amounts of rice wine fed to me. Definitely a bucket list activity

So how does it work over there, do you need a license for a smaller motorbike? And if so, how do you obtain one?
@@zucced2087 Technically you do need a license and had I been nabbed by the police I would have probably copped a fine. But I dont even have a British driving license either, just a bit if prior experience with mopeds in Thailand. The roads in the far north of Vietnam and most rural places are bendy, undulating and quite slow moving. Therefore you raise a good point, hiring a motorbike for a week was the best stupid and reckless decision I ever made, luckily for me I got away with it. If you want to do things properly then you can take a motorbike test there if you don't already have a license.

I traveled the north of Vietnam by motorcycle (I really hadn’t a clue how to ride one) & truly was taken back by the beautiful scenery, grub & the hospitality of the people who assisted me multiple times when I broke down!
Please do multiple episodes here. I'm an ex-pat living here for 9 months now. I love it here. If you get this message and you have time, you should really head down to Con Dao/Con Son island and do an episode about the French Colonialist prisons on the island and the American Tiger Cages. Beautiful, spooky island with a very dark history.
He should skip his try at explaining history though. Only a westerner who never had to live under communist rule would ever say anything nice about it. The people in the north had no other choice than to go along with the tyrannic ruling of a communist state. Yes, the French were bad, but you don´t defend a ruthless anti-democratic communist rule because of that. Stick to laughing at Soviet spoons, Bald, your romantic view of history is a bit pathetic.

I am Retired Air Force and there were 8 Airman that lost their lives that served as Aierial Porters in their Carreer field that i myself retired from. I did not serve in Vietnam as i was too young. But i did enlist 3 weeks to the day after turning 17 yrs old back in Dec 18, 1976 and i was trained by Vietnam vets that had served there in Vietnam. Enlisting prior to Jan 1, 1977, all were considered of the Vietnam area and gained in Education from the Vietnam Education Veterans Bill.
And your point? The whole war was a farce. People don't know, but Ho Chi Ming had asked America for help because the French were trying to rule over them. I'm an American and so are you. That doesn't vibe with Freedom. I don't see honor in what America did.

Glad to see you in a happy place. Keep in mind as you travel that about 70-75 percent of the people living in Vietnam were born after the fall of Saigon and are tourists in their country when it comes to the war era.

My girlfriend's family is Vietnamese, and I plan on going in the near future. It always has seemed like an amazingly beautiful country.
One of my strongest early memories is being with my grandfather at our wall in D.C. and him touching names of friends he lost. I think for a lot of Americans that is the idea of Vietnam. It's been a nice experience having that idea changed.
My wifes Vietnamese in AUS with me, and a lot of her family here too. Is your GF's family full of Dr's?
