  • 🇱🇦 I've met some interesting characters on my travels but not many like Mr. Suck. But before we get to him and his questionable Google translation skills myself and ‪@BackpackerBen‬ had to cross into a mysterious country called Laos. We entered a world not seen by many and in some ways untouched by modern life. Join us on an adventure where my other mate ‪@TimKyoutube‬ will also be with us on our way south to Saigon.
Please check out both ben's and Tim's channels for another side to the trip.

Im Thai and I understand Esan Thai dialect which is really similar to Laos. Mr. Suk (สัก is a normal name in Thai and Laos) was saying "กินเข้าแล้วเจ้าสิไปไส" (Gin khao laew chao si pai sai) = "Where would you go after you done eating" but food=เข้า=Khao and knee=เข่า=Khao and the translator got it wrong. The second time he said "ข่อยถ่าเจ้ากินเข้าก่อน" (khoy tar chao gin khao gorn) = " I'll wait for you to eat ". He was being nice but the translator really sucks at Laos language

Their customs of welcoming guests, but the old man seemed to just not understand baldy and it can become quite frustrating for older people. The "brutal realities" are really not that bad. Most people travel by bus (driving at top speed at oncoming traffic to pass slightly slower vehicles on a two lane road ... but you get used to that). Most of their misery was in traveling by bike in a rather unpleasant season. And the experience of everything being so new and interesting makes enduring a little hardship not so difficult. You feel accomplished just making it to your hotel for the night, getting in a good meal and cracking a beer to top it all off. Never tasted better.

As a Thai, who understands Lao (our languages are scary similar), the interaction with Mr.Suck (Sak) was top tier lost in translation comedy.
Edit: sorry guys here’s what Suck was saying and tried to use the app to translate.
“Kneel down and where do you go” = where are you going after you’re done eating.
“I want you to eat it/white lips/server (not clear)” = I’ll wait for you to finish eating.
He was prolly waiting to take Bald to his secret sucky lair.

That train you were on was actually pretty flash by Vietnam standards. Took the overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa at it was straight out of the 1950s, no air con either and it was 40c most days. However we met a guy on the train who invited us to his wedding and we were the only westerners there out of about 500 people. Their generosity and hospitality to strangers is just amazing. "Pubs" would only really exist in the bigger city like the capital Vientiane, I hope you would visit deeper in my motherland. If you were to travel deeper to Laos, I recommend Luang Prabang the northern city which was the old capital, full of old temples and architect. the Southern Province of Pakse, famous for the coffee plantation, a lot of water fall and nice scenery.
I would recommend you use Googel translation from english to Thai as our lao language is almost identical to Thai, where most Laotian would understand Thai, and the Thai translation is a lot more developed than the Lao language

*True Story:* during the Vietnam War, my dad was stationed at Udon Thani in northeastern Thailand. My mom moved onto base with him and brought my brother and me to live there. Our visas were about to expire, so my dad drove to the Laotian border to get our passports stamped. He said just get your passport stamped, and come right back. However, my mom saw a little market, and decided to do a little shopping. The people of the village had never seen little white-haired kids like we looked at that age, and gathered around to see us. Meanwhile, my dad was across the border, shitting bricks, with no way to check on us because he was active U.S. military. By the time we safely returned, our cabbie was passed out drunk, and he had to drive the car back home himself. Part of family lore for 50 years.

Regarding your comments about My Lai... I am from NYC but living in Saigon the past 30 years where I remain. Ten years ago I went to My Lai where at the infamous ditch the Vietnamese made a simple memorial being casted footprints along the ditch representing normal life as it would have been the day of the massacre. The person who stopped the massacre was a helicopter pilot by the name of Hugh Thompson who threatened to shoot anyone who continued to hamper his efforts to save some individuals. He went back around 2003 and met with someone he rescued being an older lady by that time. She asked Thompson a question that amazed me because the more obvious question would have been, "Why did they do this"?. But she asked him why he did NOT do what the others had done. That question really threw him... Anyway... I really enjoy your content!

Vientiane, Laos. I never knew what to expect, even though we had just come from The Philippines and Thailand. I never imagined it to be so barren but I admired how kind everyone was to us. I looked up the Nation's wikipedia history and saw it was only two paragraphs ‘long’ and I understood. Bombed to shit by the US and lots of unrest. Anyways, that night my friends and I go to find a bar, but nothing was open as we walked for ages. Everything closed so early and was so dark, even on a saturday night. Eventually we find what looks like a backyard with a fridge, some tables essentially, but there's people and beer. Safe to say we drank. Getting back was lengthy, considering we got lost. We walked for so long we gave up on finding the hostel, we were exhausted atp, and wanted food instead. Noodles to be precise. After ages, we were saved when a ladyboy police officer(?) drives by and takes us to some food stands nearby. They drove off without asking a question, an angel nonetheless. Still, our hostel was out of reach, but as we kept walking we hear voices and stumble across a closed outdoor plaza where a bunch of workers are drinking and kicking back. They invited us to a couple drinks and we accepted. A while later they drove us back to our hostel on bikes and didn't ask for money at all (though ofc we gave them some, angels). A lot happened in so little. [More in next comment]

Another time in Laos on the same trip involved more of nothing and was by far the craziest experience I had on my trip. My friends and I left for Hanoi by Bus, which took about 24 hours. As we left Laos that evening I was wondering what Vietnam would be like, though I didn't find out. After 12 hours, the bus arrives at the border our entry permissions are checked. My dumbass had messed up the visa process and was surely denied entry. But then again, there were more travellers with us and 2 others were in the same situation. Still, we had to trek up a paved hill in the cool, foggy, forested mountains to the most Soviet-era looking building I have ever laid eyes on. The other 2 travellers pay $2-4 for their stamps, but I am requested to pay $200. As a broke graduate atp I had no choice but to leave. I ran out to the bus to grab my bag before it went through the border. I got on the bus and grabbed my bag. Although the driver and guards must have thought everyone was off the bus because it started to go through the checkpoint. I contemplated staying on the bus but feared the repercussions of being caught at another checkpoint. I ran out, technically on Vietnamese soil, and met up with my friends. After I started explaining to them, a guard noticed and started shouting at me. Quickly, we set up a plan of where to meet in Hanoi and I was escorted out of Vietnam and back to Laos on a bus for 12 hours back. When I was off the bus after letting the thoughts and emotions run through my head for 12 hours, I had a huge BeerLao and bowl of noodles. Ended up getting lost trying to find the a sim card after returning to the hostel from before again!! because everything was closed. Navigated back using the offline 'Places' feature on the iPhone to lead myself to there using the geolocation of older pictures. Was fucking insane. What is more insane is I booked an express visa and took the 24 hour bus again to Hanoi and made it through, reunited with my friends, got obliterated and ate bahn mi
