I’m not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but I do most of my own work. I’ve been doing my own brake jobs since the late 80’s and I’ve always thought I did a pretty good job.But after watching just 1 of E’s vajeos, I feel like I’ve learned more than all of those years put together. E you do an outstanding job and personally, I’ll never stop watching your brake shows. Heck I’ll watch every one you put out. ALWAYS entertaining and I’ve never not learned something.

    funny.
"Don't drive it like a ding dong" is the reason why I've had to do brakes on the cars the wife drives. As in, she *does* drive like a ding dong and imprints/contaminates the rotors. Telling her this has not been the cause of me sleeping on the couch though; her best imitation of a chainsaw choking on 60w motor oil, however, has.

I always used a C clamp to push the piston in. I also checked for any fluid leaking around the boots indicating that the piston was leaking. Sometimes a little ridge builds up in the cylinder and screws up the seal as it gets dragged over the ridge.
I've been using motorcycle chain lube on the battery tray slides in the motor home. I may need to give Fluid Film a try.
Guess I missed the brake cleaner reveal. I'm sure you didn't forget it :)

There is no problem with sponsorship that is disclosed, and we all know your bias was positive even before the corporate help. But as we all know, sponsorship was the death of most TV automotive channels. They ended up so glossy and prepared that you never knew what they really believed. Some of that has infected TH-cam, in an insidious way. Scotty, and others, had a way of pumping strange products and 'reviews' that were incomplete and unbalanced. There shouldn't be any fear by the author of what an associated advertiser might think.

This was the first video I watched of yours as I have a 2014 ATS we bought in 2022 and have been a fan ever since.
Also have a 02 Intrepid 3.5 which we bought in 03, 07 Grand Caravan SXT bought in 08 and a 2012 CTS bought in 2017.
So I am obviously one to believe vehicles are worth repairing.
Even though I have had a tranny rebuild and AC system/heater core replaced on the old Intrepid averaging out the repairs since 2003. It comes to an average of $35/month cost of repairs. Well below any car payment. Have studied and learned to paint in my garage as well as doing some repairs and your videos are a great help.
Your videos have been great to watch and learn from.

Of the thousands of brake jobs I've done, I've very rarely ever cracked the bleeder and when I did, it was just b/c of an "eh, why not". But of all the times I haven't, it's only ever caused an issue once. On pre-test drive, didn't remember any ABS issue, but afterwards, the was swearing they now having all kinds of ABS issues even though nothing could be verified. But, the boss was all about customer satisfaction, so, the ABS system got pretty mid COMPLETELY rebuilt/replaced w dealer parts at shop expense......

Sure beats waiting over 100 miles before the pads start to really bite. I use the "EBC" brake procedure on every pad. It's a bit more aggressive probably than it should be, but it seems to work fine. 6 fairly hard stops from 60 to 10, never stopping completely with foot on the pedal (I'll use e-brake if I have to), then a long cool down before parking. Gets 'em smokin' hot. When they're ice cold again, repeat going a bit harder on the brakes for that cycle, then I ship it. Alot of the time I never get to do a second cycle, but they all seem to work fine. The key is never coming to a complete stop holding the brakes while they're red hot, or parking it while they're that hot. Otherwise you'll get pulsation later on down the road.
Thought I had the rona over here! Got real weak on Thursday with a sore throat on Friday. That's how I always get chest colds - they all start out the same way (thanks to the asthma, I get ALOT of them). Been laying low and sleeping long the past 3 days. Feel fine today. I beat it, thankfully, whatever that was ...

Hey Mr. O, don’t ask for a 55 gallon drum of fluid film. You’re in New York. You need a fluid film dunk tank. Just drive into the tank and everything from the rockers down gets coated. I live in the south so I feel for you.

Between Eric O., Big Clive, Adam Savage, and a few others ... I've been inspired to just get in there and do things.
I've ripped the inside of my car apart to properly wire an amplifier, power and remote lead down one side under the carpet in the wiring path, RCA cables down the other side similarly; taking apart things in the dash to replace the lights with leds (changing the color from that pale green to blues and purples, adding in resistors), learned to solder thanks to Clive, and Savage making me want to just make or modify things.
An extra special thanks to Eric O. though; because I noticed after watching so many of the videos, the process of thought in both diagnosis and the problem solving, I've found I am naturally thinking more in that line myself, better at helping others problem solve, figuring out what is wrong, paths to take, and just being more creative with things. The covid thing has gifted me more free time to pursuit those goals and now only does the accomplishments feel better, I'm actually decent at these things and thinking of a few opportunities when this is all over. My car started rough idling and I managed to figure out the EGR runners were clogged, cleaned them, and she's running like a champ ... though I don't feel confident enough to be poking at my valve adjustment; if only Avoca wasn't 17+ hours away; but tempted because Mr O is such a honest guy some of us wish we could patron his shop for all our repair needs.
Thanks a million. You may never realize or hear from most of the people you make a positive impact in their lives. From inspiration to restoring faith in humanity by being such wonderful people. I bet quite a few people tune in to the videos when they are having a crappy day and the slice of your life is enough to help and bring a little light upon the world.
Take care and best wishes to you and yours.

I don't know why you say, "don't follow your advice." Well I find your advice is the best out there!! I enjoy all your videos and live streams.. I do all my own work except on Transmission and Exhaust. You help me as DIY'er to troubleshoot so many issues with my POS's 99 tahoe 167K and Lincoln TC 325K, that I own. Most of all I watch all your Brake Jobs is because of your personality and how you explain what you are actually doing. I may never meet you, who knows I'm in NJ. Through your channel I feel we are friends even though I will respectfully never call your shop. Stay Safe and I look forward to the next weido..

Compressing the caliper pistons. Way back in the '90's I did brakes on an 86-ish Chevy pickup with Kelsey-Hayes ABS. When I was done, the ABS light was on and the pedal was mushy. Then I found out that lots of people were having that problem. I also found out that nobody knew how to fix it, not even the Chevy dealer. Then I heard that it was because I compressed the caliper piston without opening the bleeder. That was in 1993. So ever since then I have been cracking the bleeder and using a screw driver before I even un-bolt the caliper. That's just the way I do it now. If you're not having problems doing it the way you're doing it, then great. I'm STILL going to crack the bleeder before compressing the caliper. It works for me, so I'm going to keep doing it.

Good Day Eric, If you get the chance, could you make a video of rear brake replacement with Electric parking brakes. I would love to learn how to go about retracting the EPB actuator without a scam tool (manually retract). Honda HRV 2018.

I see you're using a good, American-made Craftsman extension. I still have a lot of American-made Craftsman tools. Finally broke my long-handled, flex-head Craftsman 3/8 drive ratchet. Sucks because when I trade it in I'm going to get cheap Chinese-made crap in return.

Ok... The bedding procedure for brakes is ridiculously different and as subjective as placebos themselves. Did some autonomous braking systems tuning for a leading company a few years back, and the bedding process used by this supplier was ridiculous. Back 2 back comparisons (with a much simpler procedure, not recommended by the supplier revealed no significant changes in data, all in the noise). Now that day was cold as f#ck and that levels bedding procedure effects on performance. But that one in the video from Chevy, wouldn't use nor recommend. Your advise I would stand by.

I would bet even the GM dealer mechanics don't torque brake caliper hardware, they will tell you they do but, yeah, right. How can I say this? A friend had his brakes done at the dealer he bought the ATS from, he came to me with a rattle, the caliper was LOOSE. Now they do NONE of his work.

I was using Carquest Platinum brake pads/rotors until I got two 2007 Yukons that came back to me over "warped" rotors. Done tons on passenger cars with no issues ever. Warrantied them out and the same thing happened again. I asked the guys at Advance Auto what the bedding procedure was and they couldn't tell me. No info online anywhere either. Does anyone know if there is a bedding procedure for the CQ Platinums?

Why the heck would anyone criticize a guy who has been doing this stuff for a donkey’s age and is the best mechanic on TH-cam. I’ve been working on cars since the mid-70s and I learn something from EricO every time I watch SMA.
One thing though - there wasn’t a single instance of the Brake Clean sound in this video and I did miss that.
PS - I also like the wheel bearing videos. Hearing the big ugga-dugga gun and Big Nasty is cool too.

Yeah, the 'Dude, Bruh!' brigade can get all butt-hurt about a piston being pushed back in, but if it's not binding or corroded, why not exactly?
I'm admittedly a cheap bastard, and I'm from a location pretty much the opposite of the rust belt. E.g. it's unsalted and dry as a... you get the idea.
So I have rebuilt brake calipers with new seals after disassembling and picking/brushing/dremeling out all the filth, but if it ain't broke, why would someone being paid by the hour fix it? Hell, my time is worth a fraction of Eric O's and if it was moving freely enough to push back with a big flatblade or a C clamp, I would do that thing and drive it until something else broke.
Edit: If I gave it to a shop to do brakes, I'd get them to do a flush at the same time. Especially if I lived in the land of road salt and snow. But it the customer isn't paying then why snap off or round a rusted mess of a bleeder screw to drain the caliper as it's piston is being pushed in? I mean there might be a bit of crud, water or filth lurking at the very bottom of the fluid in the caliper. But being pushed in that slowly it's not likely to go anywhere.

I can't say I've ever had to file a brake caliper bracket. Then again, if a normal car from NY pulled in here, we'd call it rusted beyond repair and send its on its way. My shop charges 1hr for most cars to do pads and rotors. I hope you charge more.

I did rear brakes on my Lexus GS. The pin was so rotted I needed a heavy sledge to move the caliper. Ended up getting 2 new calipers from Lexus, $99 each. Not of of Toyota's better designs.
