Hey thanks for coming to the island and supporting us! I like that you brought up choosing to be respectful on our beaches. You mentioned coming back and maybe staying in a different type of place. Please do your research before booking an Airbnb or resort. Many are not locally owned or in the case of Airbnb’s, they drive out locals and add to our massive homeless problems. Many short term rentals used to be low income housing. These rentals tend to be illegal and not pay into our tourism tax system too. It hurts our ability to maintain roads, honking trails and other resources when we don’t get that tax revenue. Sadly, of the two, resorts are probably more ethical to stay in because we get the tax revenue. Just some things to think about. Hope you come back!:)

Thank you so much for this information! I had no clue that was the case. With that in mind, I'll opt to stay at a resort on my next visit. :)

As a local, I feel like a lot of LOCALS have a resentment towards tourists right now BECAUSE tourists are coming to our Island during a pandemic is kinda ridiculous for us to go through. Last year, our economy was awful because of the pandemic and we got hit really really hard. I work in a resort on the west side and I catch myself having light resentment towards some people. BUT, I wanna say.. thank you SO much for being respectful to our land for not doing anything disrespectful.

That is completely understandable! While planning & booking I didn’t take into account those things since we planned to follow all of Hawaii’s COVID guidelines but still, it totally makes sense. I would feel the exact same way :)

I have both lived in Hawai'i & returned for a visit staying with friends. In 2018, I went for the very first time as a tourist. Very different experience. I was married to a local boy from Kalihi, have 4 hapas. When I went in 2018, the hotel computers were down. No one could check in, no keys could be made. I had been awake for 14 hours at that point. The other hotel guests were so rude to the front desk staff!
When it was my turn to check in (he was writing names of people who were just arriving)
I looked the guy straight in the face & told him, "I'm sorry for the way some of these people are acting. I'm a nice haole." He smiled so big, even laughed a bit.
The maid who took care of our room was so sweet, so funny! I tipped everyone who gave good service, I was generous with them. Before we left to check out, I wrote a thank you note to her, left a pineapple & 3 crisp $100. I would have given her five if I could have! The sister of my ex (from Kalihi) hated me so much. She had worked in the Waikiki hotels for her entire life. She may have hated me because of the way so many tourists are so rude & ungrateful to people in the service industry in Waikiki.

It’s not only Hawaii that people are traveling to, there are people traveling everywhere around the world during the pandemic.
So… What do you suggest people who are traveling do? In order to not receive resentment from native Hawaiians if they do decide to travel during this time ??

I'm taken aback by some of the comments from the locals. My father is Hawaiian & his entire side came to Cali before I was born. My father is no longer with us, so I didn't get to learn much about my heritage growing up. I'm now in my late 20's and we are booking our trip to Hawai'i (and other islands) for March. I was excited to get to know as much as I could about where my family is from, and about the people and their ways. All I'm seeing are rude comments from people that just assume that every tourist is there for all of the wrong reasons. If we are respecting the COVID guidelines then I don't see why so much negative energy about visiting Hawai'i is being thrown around. Anyway, I'm still coming. Bless ya.

Vitamin E for sunburn, and I'm not talking about a lotion with vitamin E as one of it's ingredients. Take an actual capsule of vitamin E--or two, or three, or four, etc.--cut it open, and smear it all over the burn. It works.

About the beaches not being available for everyone. It’s usually a safety issue. Sandy Beach is one place where people get their necks broken at the shoreline. I talked to guy who went through that as a teen. He is a middle age guy still in a wheelchair.
Also Hawaii is in the top five states with the most drownings. Go to beaches with lifeguards.

Seems like air b n bs are about 150-400$ a night and then parking is another 30-40$ a day on top of car rental of 40-60$ a day! That is good to know when you factor in a budget for Oahu Hawaii. Also remember seasons matter. You traveled to Oahu on the tail end of winter, our winter means rain and high surf which is why you couldn’t swim on some beaches because the current and swells are dangerous and the brown water you saw is runoff from the mountain rivers and streams that come down to the ocean after a heavy rain. A lot of those beaches are calm and flat and very swimmable during summer time. Another tip, Hawaii is expensive so anytime you see a “cheap deal” there’s no such thing, cheaper the hotel the older and further away from the beach. Also learn the history of Hawaii, a lot of locals don’t want any tourist there during a pandemic, should they be rude? Of course not if it is their job but for Kama Aina in the tourism industry sometimes it’s hard to look the other way while tourist are allowed to do way more than what HawIi residents are allowed to do during covid. Travel respectfully and research what it is you’re looking for because you’re right, people do live here and we aren’t part of your paradise dream, that’s a dream America has sold you all in. This is our home, overthrown illegally and tourism is shoved down our throat. Be respectful of the host culture and show a little interest in its history and you will see true Aloha spirit in return.

What’s your suggestion then?? (“A lot of natives don’t want tourists traveling to Hawaii during a pandemic”) if the natives already have a resentment what could a tourist possibly do besides not come to Hawaii at all?? I personally don’t think it specifically has to do with the pandemic, this has always been the subtle sentiment of the natives towards outside visitors unfortunately. But I am interested to hear what could make a difference for a tourist traveling during the pandemic in the eyes of a native?

hi first of all as a local i really appreciate how respectful you are! just wanted to maybe clear some stuff up for you and people in the comments!
    1. people can be a little less welcoming towards tourists especially during a pandemic so that’s possibly why you got that vibe from the hotel
    2. seasons change a lot of the beaches and we get a lot of winter swell and other factors that can make it super dangerous and not very enjoyable to swim during those times in certain areas
other that that-for anyone else coming to hawai’i here are some things to remember!
    1. be respectful of local spots! please limit geotagging :)
    2. respect the wildlife and the land! don’t litter etc., keep on the designated paths and don’t get too close to the animals
    3. reef safe sunscreen is a must!!
    4. be respectful of pandemic rules and like you mentioned in the video, hawai’i is home for a lot of us so please make sure you are following guidelines and wearing masks etc.
    5. support small and support local as much as possible!!!

although tourism supports the economy in hawai’i, it destroys pretty much everything else (culture, the people, the natives, the locals, the wildlife and the land).
geotagging is especially harmful because it can:
      1. overcrowd residential areas
      2. bring too much traffic to secluded places which can disrupt natural habitats, put wildlife in danger and destroy nature
      3. overcrowd local only spots
      4. brings potentially disrespectful and uneducated tourists to places that could be dangerous for them and the place/people there
hawai’i physically can not handle the amount of tourists that are on the island and that continue to come without a proper understanding of the islands, culture, and history.
it is an unspoken rule here (and in many other places) to never geotag specific places, even as a local. if you know, you know. if you don’t, you don’t. even within the community people keep certain spots very low key and “secret” in order to not only get away from the insane amount of crowds but also to protect the land.
some places are meant to be kept secret.
if people continue to geotag and promote areas, the entire island will be so crowded. it ruins hawai’i.
promoting the hawai’i aesthetic is a whole other issue that deals with gentrification and colonialism that if you do plan on coming here i very much recommend doing your research into!
all in all, not geotagging/promoting hawaii on social media is just a respect thing :)

Honestly my husband and I are coming next week for our very first visit to Hawaii. I was so excited but now I’m nervous as I have read nothing but hateful comments from locals regarding tourists and it makes me regret planning a trip to Hawaii (we would cancel but our flights are non refundable so we are going). We waited until we received our vaccines and the covid situation is a bit better to come, and while I understand not every tourist is respectful towards the land and the people (we definitely will be) it does make me wish we would have went elsewhere. A lot of what I’m seeing locals say has to do with the amount of tourists, we usually go to popular beaches throughout Europe and they are always thrilled to have tourists as their businesses depend on it.

Just heads-up! December is in middle of Hawaiian winter, so expect it to be windy, sometimes rainy. Ocean activities limited to South Shore(Waikiki/Ala Moana). Waterfall hiking not Highly recommended also. If planning on doing outdoor activities, suggest waiting until next spring/spring. IF overly anxious, & cannot W8 that long, could plan for June-Sept. visitation. No such thing as Enough research/preparation...Knowledge is KEY!

i live in hawaii and it's so nice to see a considerate tourist :) the aulani resort is so much fun for a disney fan, and there's lots of stuff to do that's disney related, just ask the front desk and they have great service! after all, they're disney :) if you really want to buy lots of snacks, you can go to costco or walmart or target! i recommend going out to the country instead of staying in the city as a lot of the beauty is there and there are less tourists i recommend not looking at tourist blogs but looking at blogs from people who live here instead, tourist blogs glorify everything

however be careful if you ever visit downtown honolulu, stay in populated areas as homeless people are a problem there. the city can get scary when it's nighttime so stick to populated attractions at night like night shows, etc. there are some pacific islander night shows if you look around online. look at local restaurants to eat at, and like i said before, listen to the locals! we live here so i hope we know what we're talking about

so, some locals will hate me for this, but I live here on Oahu and I have some favorite things to do around here.
    1. the maunawili falls hike, it's not super easy but it's not super hard either and it's so pretty up there with a waterfall where you can swim.
    2. pupukea or shark's cove on the north shore, it's a snorkeling place with a lot of fish and pretty coral and some caves to go into if you're that daring. it has a really small parking spot though, so you have to get there really early. but it's worth it.
    3. matsumoto's shave ice, this is probably in most tourist books but it has great shaved ice. however, island snow is a less "Hawaii type feel" of a place, but in my opinion the shaved ice is better.
    4. hanauma bay, quite a touristy place as well but it's really pretty you just have to get there really early as well.
also just walking around the north shore and kailua town and so many other places can be really nice and less busy than the actual sites, while you still can find some really cool things to do.
I will say that if you come here, especially now, during the pandemic and everything a lot of locals will hate you for it. we have reasons to. so I'd say wait until you're vaccinated and be really cautious with traveling here because we are an island and we have such a small population, so bringing covid is a big impact.
I found it funny how you were somewhat surprised or whatever that people live here. I don't blame you at all, we are seen as such a vacation place I really understand it. I've had people come up to me while they're definitely on vacation, thinking I'm some sort of attraction and that they can interact with me like I'm getting paid to work and be a "native islander" so that was really weird.
this is such a long comment but here are just some thoughts I have.

"Next time we want to stay AirBnB" AirBnB is illegal in Hawaii. As you can see Hawaii depends on tourism, alot hotel operators revenues from hotel bookings. They complained to politicians and lawmakers and made Airbnb illegal before the pandemic.

False, literally just stayed in an AirBnB in Haleiwa on the North Shore of O'ahu for 6 days and it was amazing.

I am also staying at an airbnb! Def a way to help the local people (local fam) out since they have to rent out part of their homes due to the high prices. (etc)

Everyone, please pray for people in Hawaii and anywhere else people are worshipping water, nature, etc. They are actually worshipping marine spirits which is not good. I was watching a video of a woman talking about if Hawaii doesn't repent, judgement will come upon them. Please everyone, please pray for the people of Hawaii and anywhere else, practicing idolatry. Thank you so much and God bless you all in Jesus name!

@thorne africa Hawaiians just like any other human being came from the Creator and just like anybody else, will go back to the Creator.

@thorne africa I dont need to keep anything. This is the problem because we must humble ourselves and repent. These false "gods" you are referring to are fallen angels or offspring of fallen angels. Everything leads back to the Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Religion has nothing to do with it but a relationship with Jeaus Christ who loves you, me, and all of us. That's it and that's all.

    • @ShiningBright777
      @ShiningBright777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@thorne africa How it reflects on me really doesn't matter. It has never been about me, Hawaiian's, or anyone else but Jesus Christ. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts but as a Christian, our duty is to warn people whether you believe it or not. The rest is up to you.

    • @ShiningBright777

@thorne africa I am respecting others by speaking Truth! You just don't want to hear the Truth because it disturbs you spirit. The question is why? When someone is requesting prayer for people, how is that disrespectful. Why get so angry when Jesus Christ is acknowledged...no one has these same convictions when buddah, shiva, mother nature is mentioned but when Jesus is mentioned, people like yourself have to respond on it negatively. Let me tell you why because deep down you know what I say is true and if you acknowledge Jesus, you therefore reflect on yourself and don't want to face the Truth! I can say this because this is the case for all of us. We are all the same! The more you resist, the harder it will be. Only Jesus can fill that void...not anyone or anything else. No matter where you try to run or hide, you will always see or hear this message.

@thorne africa I want you to know I was not trying to offend you or anyone else but often, many get offended when you talk about Jesus Christ. I myself have much to learn and must be humble. Jesus loves you so much and wants a relationship with you. I will pray for you that this comes to pass. Have a nice rest of your day and may God continue to bless you in Jesus name!
