    Just had the privilege of being the 848th person to thumb up this video.
    I bought my 848 brand new back in August of 2008, and still love it 12+ years later.

      Major maintenance costs?

    • @bladecutter1
      @bladecutter1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mmontero15 For me, none.
      I do my own services, so I adjust the valves, change the cam belts, and service the front forks all on my own.
      The only part that needed to be replaced was the voltage regulator, and that was a recall in the first year of ownership.

    Great review. I just picked up one a few days ago, a 2011 with only 3800 KM on it. couldn't say no to the deal. Your observations are spot on, the mirrors suck and it doesn't like to idle along in slow traffic. I could toast a cheese sandwich on the seat after a few minutes of stop and go city traffic.. Don’t buy this bike if you live in a city. Really hot in stop and go traffic, can’t do U turns (horn button hits the tank yikes!), mirrors just reflect my arms and shoulders, really bad fueling at low rpms (very choppy and rough), not good at slow sharp corners. But once you go above 130kmh its nice. Fast sweeping corners feels very planted & it looks very sexy.

    So I'm not trying to be rude so don't take it that way.. but you're going to have another thing coming. The bikes themselves aren't any worse maintenance wise than any other bike for the most part.. however when you do need to fix something, you can expect 2-4x what you'd pay for the same thing for a Japanese bike. The service costs are also fairly bad especially for the 15000 mile service and valve adjustment if it's needed. With that being said.. some things to think about would be your front heavy comment.. it's a different riding posture than Japanese bikes, so it feels different, it's really not any more front heavy. I wouldn't talk about the prices if maintenance until you have to do some. But I will agree with you that they are worth it. They are phenomenal bikes, I wouldn't go back ever. I've ridden Ducati superbikes for years, so maybe just trust me a bit? But like I said I'm just trying to inform you, not trying st all to be disrespectful. Anyways take care and keep the rubber side down!

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JUSTIN MATHEWS considering what the older Ducati's cost for maintenance, it's not bad. I didn't mention anything about fixing broken parts; just maintenance. Also the maintenance intervals are more spread out on these than the older Ducati's. I am not doubting your knowledge, but I have done a bit of research on the 848 before buying one. I understand the riding position is different. I am trying to give the viewer an idea of what it's like, since most people aren't going to buy this as their first bike, they may get a smaller Japanese bike instead. I do appreciate the input regardless but I feel the points I made in the video are not false.

    Spencer, I'm about to pick up a 2012 Ducati 848 Corse, 14k miles, same color combo as yours. What are you getting quoted locally for changing timing belts (are there two?) and valve adjustment? I imagine the bike I'm buying is getting close to those two services. Also, can you point me to a well priced website for parts? I'm purchasing the bike for $4,900. Clean title, no accident history. Only blemish is a rock that hit the front cowl and chipped off the plastic over the headlight. I'll probably want to replace that part. Thanks!

      KefirTView for the services, you’re coming up on a big one. 15k!!! That’s going to be the belts and valve adjustment, along with other things. Check out this link (in the next comment) for my video on my 7500 mile service. Hopefully that answers all your questions on price, and what’s suppose to be done!
      As far as parts, depends what you’re looking for. For my CF pieces (now on the bike, but not when this was shot) I use a sight called “slingshot racing”. They are located in California and make descent CF parts for a great price! bellissimoto is another site which features a lot of Italian bike parts, but I have yet to do business with them. There are also 2 facebook groups for the 848/1098/1198 where people post parts for sale, questions about their bike, or just photos showing of their ride. Other than that, sounds like a good price! How does the riding position compare to your old CBR 600? I'm looking at this bike coming from a CBR600rr.

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      starscreamp250 I had a 1998 cbr 600 before this bike. I can't say I remember how it was 100% but I know for a fact the ducati is a more forward position. Your groin is always sliding into the tank though because the seat slants down into the tank and doesn't slant back up. I now have grips on the sides on the tank that I can clamp my legs on while I brake which helps a lot. Hopefully this helps. If you have any other questions you can DM me on Instagram @ducatikid848

    At what rpm do you release the clutch to take off in first?

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrewX Cortez S Perez to be completely honest I have no idea. Been riding her for almost 2 years since I made this video and I’m a lot more comfortable with the clutch now. But honestly, I never look down, I just feel it out. Why?

    • @drewxcortezsperez705
      @drewxcortezsperez705 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spencer King I started on a cbr 500 only 10000 rpm this being 1300 it seems like I have to rev it up to take off smooth but it takes off really fast. it doesn’t like to creep in 1st is it ok to finesse the clutch a lot?

    • @drewxcortezsperez705
      @drewxcortezsperez705 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      13000*

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrewX Cortez S Perez I try not to feather the clutch on any of my vehicles. Seems to be a common practice for people who don’t understand how much more wear that has on a clutch. I never have to feather mine. Eventually you will get more comfortable with the bike and be able to take off better without having to work the clutch so much. Just takes practice. And you can’t compare a CBR500 to a Ducati 848. Very difference machines. I’d say just keep practicing. How long have you had the bike?

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrewX Cortez S Perez I will say this, first gear is a known b**ch on these things. So don’t be too worried about not being perfect on it. Luckily it’s a wet clutch, so it’s nice and forgiving

    Your mirrors, Look like they need tightening up a bit, Mine are not that much better tho, I don't have the extensions on mine so even tucking in my arms you still can't see much, I literally stick my elbow out like a tea cup handle and look in between 😄 Also helps to pull the clutch and lift off the throttle so they aren't vibrating. Ofc there's some negatives about this bike, But it's so fun to ride, they out weight the negatives. anyone saying they are high maintenance are over exaggerating. Maybe Ducati just got a bad rep from the old bikes but the modern ones are pretty solid. Overall build quality is so much better than Japanese bikes. Your not just paying for the brand. It's literally twice as high quality, Your getting what you pay for.

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommyx I couldn't agree more! I will be address the mirror issue soon with just a single mirror on the handlebar and the flush mount blinkers. But you're right about the positives outweighing the negatives. These bikes are amazing!

    • @TMackdownhill
      @TMackdownhill 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah they are, Can't see myself going back to a Japanese bike after this. But not a fan of the 959, The 848 just looks way better IMO. Haven't got the evo model so really could do with getting a steering damper as I've had a few sketchy moments cus of not having one. Try out my technique, Take off the mirror extenders n just look between your arm lmao

    I’m a new rider. Why is it a bad first bike? What’s a good alternative? Thanks

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just a lot of power for a first bike. Someone younger or less responsible who’s never experienced something fast before could seriously hurt themselves on a bike like this. That being said, there are people that go out and buy a 1000cc bike as a first bike and are totally fine. But to me, a first bike is like a first car. There’s a good chances you’re going to drop it or crash with it. It happens. So a new rider would be better off getting something cheaper and less powerful. If you’ve never road in your entire life, I’d start with a 250-400cc. But that’s just me. I can’t tell you what to do.

    I just got a 2010 Ducati Corse Evo(12,000 km on it). I love the heck out of it. It does get VERY hot in slow traffic, however, and if you have shorts on(never a good idea, I know but..) you can almost singe your legs. I have the same problem with the faring screws, but it's easily fixed with some good threadlock, after you discover the problem. Screws are like $12 CAD each. Fun to ride, but not for long distances. 2 hours is a good solid ride.

    • @kingspencer7
      @kingspencer7  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Fahlman have to agree with you there. I’ve ridden a few times with shorts and it was terrible. I ended up getting aftermarket screws for the fairings and replacing the factory mirrors with a handlebar mirror and flush mount blinkers. So much better!
